Why I rent I HAVE BEEN ASKED many times
whether I rent or own. The truth is, I’ve gone back and forth. I’ve been a renter and a property owner. Over the years I’ve had my share of experiences on both sides. Owning can be a great opportunity, but it can also be stressful and hard on the budget. There’s always a surprise expense when you’re least expecting it. Renting offers flexibility and stressfree, maintenance-free living, but it can be hard to find the perfect place. I really enjoy renting. I have always preferred ‘all-inclusive’ rentals. It doesn’t mean you don’t have the expense of utilities, it just means the expense is factored into the rent. The monthly expense is consistent instead of varying month by month, plus, I like the simplicity of one bill as opposed to tracking hydro, gas, water and trash removal. But all-inclusive isn’t always better – or cheaper. I think that paying your own bills can be better on your budget, especially if you’re really good about conserving power and water.
+ get social 4 nexthome.ca
I like renting because I’m not much into property maintenance. In my first home the grass all died before I realized I hadn’t watered it (in months!). That may sound silly - but I’m busy, and not a green thumb. I thought the rain would just keep it healthy. Oh, how wrong I was. And every time I worked on that lawn, all I could think of was the water bill and what I could be doing with my time instead of mowing and raking. I love decor projects. In my house, we exposed brick walls, painted rooms and renovated the kitchen. It was fun – but it was also very expensive. It all began when our fridge died. On the other hand, when I rented and our dryer died, the landlord told me to order a new one and give her the bill. It’s more fun getting new appliances when someone else is paying the bill. I think renting is a great way to live. If you’re ready to move, let us help. We have extensive listings and rental advice. Check us out online at NextHome.ca, and get ready to rent your new home!

Advice | MOVING
When planning your move:
Should you hire movers? By Chuck Resnick
MORE ADVICE ONLINE nexthome.ca/news/advice
THERE’S AN OLD SAYING about being penny wise and pound foolish, and I see this play out often in the moving industry. When anticipating moving your home or business, you have the option of hiring a moving company or doing it yourself. Although people assume DIY is the economical way to go, hiring a professional mover can, in fact, save you time, stress and even money. 8 nexthome.ca
Think about it. By doing it yourself, you have to rent a truck, determine supplies/moving equipment and other incidentals. You need to transfer your possessions from point A to B safely and efficiently, and find helpers. Few are qualified or willing to get behind the wheel of a moving truck, so likely what you end up with is a cargo van, which requires more than one trip. You ‌continued on page 10

ask a few friends and/or family members to help with the reward of cold beverages and pizza, but at the last minute, some of them do not show up. Those who do are probably not trained in things like how to lift boxes without hurting their backs. There is much more chance of injury when people move themselves. The most common reason why people opt for DIY is expense, because they assume that longtime, recognized, national brand movers are expensive. Relocation specialists offer skilled, trained, bonded, uniformed and experienced movers who have the same goal in mind as you — to move your items as quickly and as safely as possible. Many movers such as Two Men and a Truck Canada offer a free, no obligation in-home estimate so you know exactly where you stand should you choose to hire them. Many people don’t realize what it takes to move; you may be surprised at the cost and what it covers. If you hire professionals to pack as well, we have all the supplies that ensure safe travelling for all categories of possessions, from heavy books to fragile lamps. Our boxes, for example, come in standard sizes so they can be stacked in the moving van to maximize space. Professionals have dollies, stretch wrap, blankets and ties for securing items to the van walls. The goal is to get everything in the truck secured, so it does not shift during travel. DIYers likely lack the know-how to do this effectively. Even if you do decide to pack your own belongings, consider purchasing professional packing materials from a reputable mover. Whether you are moving your residence belongings or transferring office furniture, equipment and files, moving specialists know what to plan for and how to arrange the logistics. You may have a narrow window of opportunity because of booking elevators in a condominium, for example. We make it our business to take on the headaches of the move for you. Moving is one of the most exciting — and stressful — life steps you can take. Enlisting a professional mover is a fabulous stress reducer. If you are planning a move, think through the steps needed and keep an open mind to your options. Sure, you can do it yourself, but do you really want to? Doing it yourself will likely cost you more in time, money and aggravation. When you look at the big picture, hiring professional movers may be one of the best relocation decisions you could make!

Cover Story | CITY LIVING
The best of Edmonton this October By Sarah Sussman
AS FALL SETTLES IN and the
temperatures start to dip, cosy up and head out this month to enjoy all that Edmonton has to offer. In addition to all of the amazing new eateries opening up (and all the decadent new bingsu Korean shaved ice spots), October 2017 is prime time to tap into your creative side. Head to the Edmonton Short Film Festival, learn some coding or head to the Winspear Centre on Halloween to take in a showing of the 1925 silent film The Monster. Here’s the best of Edmonton this October. Favourite new spots to eat and drink As bingsu (Korean shaved ice) takes its reign as Edmonton’s latest “it” food, make sure you head out to one of the city’s new dessert spots to try this sweet frozen delicacy. 1 2 nexthome.ca
Snowy Dessert (10209 82 Avenue) has some amazing fresh fruit variations (try the mango) while Snowy Village (10450 178 St. NW) offers adventurous creations like the injeolmi bingsu. The Butternut Tree (101, 9707 110 St NW) is one of the newest additions to the Edmonton dining scene, featuring local ingredients and a decadent menu created by chef Scott Downey. In case you were wondering, the restaurant is named after the only kind of walnut tree that grows in Canada. Head on down and try the Irvings pork with crab apple butter, coral mushrooms, potato and leek. Cat lovers, rejoice – Edmonton is getting its second cat café soon! Following the success of Cat Café on Whyte, a new kitty haven called Paws the Cat Café is slated for opening on 109th Street.
Dates to mark on the calendar We’ll be short with this one – the Edmonton Short Film Festival is coming to the Royal Alberta Museum Oct. 14 for a 90-minute gala of Alberta indie film screenings, live music, Alberta craft beer and free (yes, free) popcorn. The festival aims to spotlight Alberta’s growing film scene, showing everything from 30-second trailers to more indepth 15-minute short films. For all the tech-curious ladies out there, Ladies Learning Code is hosting a day-long workshop at Startup Edmonton Oct. 21 to cover the basics of HTML coding, CSS and online resume building. Ladies Learning Code is a notfor-profit organization that hosts a ton of awesome HTML and CSS workshops throughout the year with an aim to make web and tech skills fun and approachable.
Instead of spending a lonely Halloween night handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, head over to the Winspear Centre Oct. 31 for a showing of the silent horrorcomedy film The Monster. This is one of the original mad scientist movies, and it’s been a cult classic since its release in 1925. The event kicks off at 8pm, followed by an after-party in the Winspear lobby after the film. The best of the rest Want to check out some artwork about artwork? The Peter Robertson Gallery is showing a solo exhibition by Joseph Hartman that features a series of photographs on artists’ creative spaces. Hartman started The Artist’s Studio project back in 2013 and has since photographed more than 100 spaces of contemporary Canadian painters and sculptors. After winding down their 2016/17 season at the beginning of the summer, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is back for their 2017/18 season with a brand new chief conductor, Alexander Prior. This year, the ESO has an amazing
lineup of concerts, including the highly-anticipated show in collaboration with Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra on Oct. 28. Enjoy the sweet sounds of Mozart, Dvorak and Estacio with guest appearances from Ottawa conductor Alexander Shelley and violinist Jessica Linnebach. And for all the diehard Simons shoppers out there, the Quebecbased fashion retailer finally opened its second location in the north end of the city at Londonderry Mall. The mall is getting a massive $130-million facelift, so expect to see some other exciting retailers moving into the space soon. With so much happening around Edmonton this month, make sure you get out of the house and immerse yourself in something that’s a little outside of your comfort zone. With so many exciting film events, gallery shows, music events and foodie finds, October is slated to be quite an adventurous month for Edmontonians. From YP.ca. Advice | APARTMENTALITY
Check references on a prospective roomie
it’s essential By Kathryn Kusyszyn
MORE ADVICE ONLINE nexthome.ca/news/advice
EMPLOYERS CHECK REFERENCES, landlords check references, and if you’re considering someone as a roommate, you should check their references too. A person can seem charming initially, then later on turn into a nightmare. Do your homework and avoid such situations. Have a rental application form that’s appropriate for your province. It will cover all the bases. Discuss how they feel about overnight visitors, smoking, pets, sharing household chores and other mutual resonsibilities. Asking why they left their last place and how long they lived there is important. The application should ask for references from a current employer, a previous landlord and at least one previous roommate. Tell them that you will call these people
to verify employment status and their previous housing history. By providing contact information for these references, the prospective roommate is giving you permission to contact them. When calling an employer, state that you are verifying the potential roommate’s employment status and character, not doing an employment check for another job. When calling a previous landlord, find out how long the person lived there, whether they paid their rent on time or if there were any other pertinent issues, and why they left. If this information doesn’t match what the person told you, you may need more clarification. Previous roommates can be revealing. Ask how long they have known the person and how long
they lived together. Then ask “What did you like about living with __?” and “What didn’t you like about living with __?” Ask why they are no longer living together. If someone cannot provide any references or if none of their references are forthcoming, beware. You will be living with this person in close quarters, sharing a space and relying on them to fulfil their responsibilities. You need to have a reasonable comfort level with them – they will have access to all of your personal posessions and be privy to much of your private life. Your health, safety and peace of mind are at stake. Be selective, communicate clearly and make sure your expectations are specific, and with some searching you will find the right match.

10 WAYS to let a stranger know you’re not letting them in By Jennifer Braun
MORE ADVICE ONLINE nexthome.ca/news/advice
OFTEN AS RENTERS, we have to deal with our fair share of awkward moments; bumping in to your ex-fling on the elevator, trying to avoid eye contact with story-telling Bob, finding an eviction notice on your apartment door (harsh). But let’s not forget the painfully awkward moment of having to tell a stranger that you can’t let them into the building. 1 6 nexthome.ca
No one likes to be the bad guy, yet it’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure a stranger doesn’t get let into the building. That includes not buzzing people in if you’re not expecting anyone and not holding the door for people you don’t recognize. At times, that can even mean saying “No” to grandma, a girl scout and a mother with a stroller… Awkward!
It’s awkward, it’s weird – it’s a situation renters try hard to avoid – but it is the golden rule. Thankfully you’re a renter, which means you’re good at thinking on your feet (seriously, it’s one of the five signs of being a renter). Just take a cue from the list below and memorize one of these – or even all of these:
