EDITORS’ NOTES

w

hether you’re relocating from one coast to the other or moving to your first place out of parents home, changing homes can be hectic, exciting and certainly stressful. But, relax.

You can eliminate all the anxiety sometimes associated with moving by taking control of the situation with confidence. If you decide to move yourself, book a moving truck well in advance from a reliable company that can help you give you tips on moving as well as advice regarding the size of vehicle you will need. If you decide to go with a pro, ask your friends and family for a recommendation of mover. Call at least three companies to ask about their services and then decide. Professional movers can do everything for you if you wish, from packing and unpacking, to disconnecting appliances and electronics, but of course there’s extra cost involved. Make sure you understand the terms of your agreement no matter what you decide as well any other additional costs, such as insurance and mileage costs so you can budget accordingly.

t’s that time – off to school. Whether you’re the student or it’s your kids, school puts a demand on your home. You may want to give some thought to how to set up some space in your home to accommodate homework.

For a while – especially during the 90s and early 2000s, it was absolutely necessary to find a spot for a computer. It was a decor nightmare! That big desktop monitor and high tech tower needed to be plugged into the modem. That required a station. But apartment buildings weren’t built with a computer nook in mind, it often required some inconvenient placement. A computer desk with upper shelving that always seemed in the wrong spot. A machine on the dining table taking up its own space. A desk in a bedroom, requiring one resident to endure having the rest of the family constantly barging in, vying for screen time. Now with laptops, tablets and smartphones attached to wireless modems, the cords have been cut. Anyone can work anywhere. But that printer and supplies still need a place to be plugged in and accessible. Back to school is actually a great time to get organized if you aren’t already – even if there’s no student in your home. All of the back-to-school gear is on sale and readily available. Vignettes in stores show you how to arrange all of the stuff stylishly. You don’t need a home office, but with a printer, modem, maybe a photocard reader, a scanner – plus supplies like printer paper, ink, pens and the rest, creating a proper home for everything is necessary. Because your mobile, you don’t necessarily need to work where your supplies are. Many people create a little station in a night table, book shelf or closet – out of sight but easily accessed when needed. That way, each student can work in their own room or at the table (or sprawled out on the den floor like I used to do) undisturbed, and everyone can access the station for printing, scanning etc. When not studying, use your computer to visit RentersGuide.ca and start looking for the perfect new place. Our magazine and website, plus our new Renters Guide app, offer the best selection of available apartments as well as great articles and advice, making it easy to make your move!

moving It’s important to inform your kids about the family’s plans to move as soon as you can. The more time they have to prepare, the easier it will be for them, say child psychologists who suggest that children should participate in the decision-making. If kids feel included and take ownership of their new-home decision, the transition will go much easier. Moving is a family process so share the excitement and responsibilities with every member of the family. Give everyone an ageappropriate responsibility. Kids will enjoy decorating their moving boxes. And when you are in your new home, it will be easier for them to find their stuff. Throughout the move, stay as upbeat and calm as possible. Give your children a chance to express their feelings and try to be honest about your own feelings. Most children will feel some anger, sadness or may worry about the move. Reassure them they aren’t alone and it’s OK to have these feelings. Involve your kids in the packing process and start packing items you will not need ahead of time. Sentimental items your children treasure such as special blankets, beloved stuffed animals and photo albums should be kept in a separate bag or box which they can keep close until moving day, and then bring with them to your new home. Plan a date to tour your new neighbourhood with your family. If it’s not a long distance, why not ride your bikes and scope out your children’s favourite activities and even fast food locations, new neighbourhood tennis courts, soccer clubs, baseball associations. Check with the local school PTA to determine if there is a Welcome Wagon program, arrange a tour of their new school and meet the teachers ahead of moving day. Make sure children say goodbye to the important people in their lives. Help them prepare a list of phone numbers, emails and addresses of important people in their lives. Prepare cards that have their name and new address on them to hand out to friends. If you are moving within the same city, try to schedule a few play dates with their friends before your move day. Give your kids an inexpensive digital camera to take as many pictures as possible of their friends prior to moving RentersGuide.ca day. This way, they’ll have a reason to stay in touch as they share the photos.

Keep them involved with the sports teams they were associated with until the end of the season, so they can maintain their friendships while they make new friends in their new neighbourhood. Child psychology experts agree that if kids know they can stay in touch with friends and loved ones, it will make the move less traumatic. sico pAint 2015 colour trends Bold colours to take centre stage in year ahead After yeArs of plAying it sAfe with neutrAl decor, Canadians are demonstrating more confidence in their colour choices, and this will translate into bolder, more expressive-looking homes in the year ahead. That’s the forecast of leading Canadian paint brand SICO paint in unveiling its top colour picks for 2015. From rich wood and terra cotta shades to deep slate, aqua blue, fruity red and vivid jewel tones, next year’s palette by Sico paint is filled with bold, energetic hues from all colour families – with blues of all shades being a favourite in each group. “There’s a world of possibilities when it comes to infusing colour into home decor in the coming year,”said Mylène Gévry, marketing manager for Sico paint, a brand of PPG Architectural Coatings, explaining that the brand’s top-selling colours have traditionally been neutrals. “Whether deep comforting shades or bright tones used alone or in combination, the 2015 palette has something for everyone.” Gévry credited technology for the public’s renewed interest in colour.“People today are exposed to bright hues everywhere they go, from vibrant computer screens to digital art-infused consumer goods, so we’ve become more comfortable with colour as a society,”she said.“Even antitechnology types who prefer to stay grounded in nature tend to gravitate towards richer earth-bound tones due to the colourful influence of the world around them.” Based on research conducted by PPG’s international team of colour experts, the Sico brand has unveiled four prevailing decor themes for the upcoming year: Comfort Zone, Tempo, Pattern Play and Introspection. Each theme offers a diverse range of bold colours, from down-to-earth to opulent tones.

Tempo: The vibrant, playful hues of the Tempo palette by Sico paint infuse an element of energy into a decor and appear almost illuminated, such as Pesto Pasta (6513-24 Δ) green, featured on the walls of this living room.

Comfort Zone: The Comfort Zone theme is about simple living and creating harmony between the natural and man-made worlds. The result is a mix of deep, earthy neutrals and muted RentersGuide.ca blues and pinks. Invoking images of the earth, atmosphere and ocean, this palette of Sico paint colours features a range of soil and rust browns such as Etruscan Villa (6059-63), foliage greens such as Visionary Green (6165-63), and aquatic blues such as Miramichi River (6153-52). Think colourful handcrafted textiles RentersGuide.ca

and rattan, braiding, weaving, macramé and crochet. Delivering an uncluttered feel, these colours pair well with grainy wood and iodized metal to add a warm, rustic flair to living spaces. Tempo: This grouping of colours reflects consumers who are plugged-in, socially connected and comfortable expressing their individuality. Dominated by vibrant, playful hues, the upbeat collection ranges from raspberry reds and golden yellows to turquoise blues and slate greys, such as Marilyn (6502-33 RentersGuide.ca ▲*) red, Portrait Yellow (6094-64 *), Bikini Blue (6150-63) and Iron Ore (6173-73) grey by Sico paint. Urban neutrals – such as concrete grey and black – balance the intense hues and

Comfort Zone: The fusion of natural and man-made worlds characteristic of the Comfort Zone theme is evident in this bedroom, which features Ancient Lava (6208-73) brown and Snail Shell (6193-31) tan by Sico paint. work well with bright bolds in any decor. Appearing almost illuminated, the colours of the Tempo theme are intended to energize and pick up the pace of life. Pattern Play: Last year’s popular craft movement will continue to dominate home decor in 2015, translating into creative expressions of geometric patterning – whether hand- or computer-generated – both on walls and in furnishings, according to Sico paint colour experts. Featuring energetic combinations of spicy reds, deep golds, jewel greens, mid to dark blues, plums, indigos, blacks and greys, the Pattern Play theme emits an international flavour reminiscent of the opulence and tapestry of Eastern cultures. Some of this theme’s majestic hues include Tamari Almond (6115-74) gold, Clown Fish (6505-23 ▲*) orange, Atmospheric Blue (6001-63) and Patrician Purple (601573) by Sico paint. Introspection: Techies by day need a retreat at night, and the Introspection theme delivers colours that create a calm, serene environment and much-needed respite from our busy lives. Providing a welcome balance to the energetic colours of 2015, this group of colours is loaded with soft pastels and washed-out blues, browns, pinks, purples and greys. Appearing neutral-like, these hues are actually saturated with colour, including Intrepid Blue (6022-31), Linden Wood (6192-42), Frangipani (6178-31) RentersGuide.ca purple and Crosshatch (6206-42) grey by Sico paint. Building on the tranquil theme, this grounded-in-nature collection is associated with minimalistic styling, clean lines and simplicity, working well with greyed wood tones and sandy textiles.

Childproofing cHallenges Having a baby is exciting, and nerve-wracking. You want to make sure that your little angel is protected at all times. Here are some strategies to help you keep your home safe and sound. • Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers – choose the one that is right for you. • Confirm that you have reliable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure that the batteries are working. • Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Round doorknob covers are easy to find, there are specialized designs to cover the lever style. Baby gates are also an effective solution for keeping kids in or out of a room. Those little coil door stops with the white plastic stopper are a serious choking hazard. Replace them with a safer one-piece version or a rubber bumper at knob level instead. Those plastic stoppers seem innocuous but often seen in the pediatric emergency rooms. • Don’t use toys or pillows in the crib, especially with young babies. Crib bumper pads are also questionable. Never use an electric blanket for a child (could cause a fire). • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub. Drowning can occur in seconds, and mere inches of water pose a risk.

and blinds have been recalled due to the strangulation hazard posed by the cord, check yours. • Use a fridge lock. Consider oven locks and stove knob covers in the kitchen. Remove any fridge magnets small enough to be swallowed. Magnets in the digestive system can be extremely dangerous and easily cause a blockage

• Faucet covers help avoid burns and decrease the chance of your child knocking their head on the faucet. Make sure your bathtub has a non-skid mat or pads to avoid slips. Remove all soap, hair products and shaving items from tub edges and ledges. Some shampoos – like dandruff specialty shampoos – are toxic.

• Cover the fireplace with a secure screen, the glass of gas fireplaces can get extremely hot, make sure that children can’t get close enough to suffer severe burns.

• Consider a toilet seat lock so your child can’t stick their head in there, or better yet, throw things in there. Plumber visits to snake the drain don’t come cheap.

• Check toys for broken parts/bits that are chocking hazard or sharp. Keep small toys for older children (like figurines, game board pieces, and small building blocks) away from your baby. Occasionally check recall lists for toys and baby gear as even the most reputable company often finds a flaw that could pose a safety risk to your child. Many toy and baby-gear stores as well as big box hardware stores sell a variety of childproofing products. There are also companies that will come to your home find solutions to your specific needs. Do your research and shop around to find the RentersGuide.ca best approach for your wee ones.

• Lock up all medications, alcoholic beverages, chemicals and cleaning products. Make sure matches and lighters are out of reach. Use cabinet locks to secure these items. •RentersGuide.ca Make sure electrical appliances are stored away from counter edges and water sources. Roll up any cords and wires. Ground Fault Interrupters (GFIs) should be installed by all sinks and tub.

• Make sure knives and sharp items are in an area where kids can’t access them.

•Make sure cords for blinds are not dangling. Many shades
