EDITOR’S NOTE
OH THE WARM DAYS OF SUMMER
MARLENE EISNER
This year, it felt like winter went on forever; endless days of unrelenting cold and snow in mid-April! And then BAM! Mother Nature flicked a switch and seemingly overnight, it’s June. Hello, sunny skies and warm temperatures. Winter gave us a host of bills associated with staying warm and cosy during the long, cold days and nights. Our energy consumption increased to heat our apartments and keep the lights on to ward off the dark. Spring and summer bring a whole new set of variables. We’ll use our indoor lighting less, but to get through the hot, humid dog days ahead, we need to cool off with fans and air conditioning. Saving on our monthly utility bills is not always easy, but there are a few ways we can all be more energy efficient. Check out the article on page 12 for tips on how you can put more money into your pocket while reducing your environmental footprint. So enjoy renting, and when it’s time to make a move, let Renters Guide help. If there is something you’d like us to write about, or if you have a comment or suggestion, please send me an email.

ADVICE | RENTAL TIPS
EIGHT ENERGY-SAVING TIPS
FOR RENTERS
Whether you rent an apartment, townhouse or a home, these tips will help you to be more energy efficient and save money. If there are things you can’t change on your own, share these tips and encourage your landlord to make a change for the better. 1. Lighting is one of the easiest places to start saving energy. Replacing your five most frequently used light fixtures or the bulbs in them with ENERGY STAR certified LED lights can save more than $65 a year in energy costs. • Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Turning off just one 60-watt incandescent bulb that would otherwise burn eight hours a day can save about $15 a year!
2. Considering purchasing a room air conditioner? Buy an ENERGY STAR qualified model. It will use at least 10 per cent less energy than standard models. Be sure the unit fits tightly in the window so outdoor air is not getting in. 3. Consumer electronics play an increasingly larger role in your home’s energy consumption, accounting for 15 per cent of household electricity use. Many electronics use energy even when switched off. Unplug any battery chargers or power adapters when not in use (like your cell phone charger!). Use a power strip as a central “turn off” point when you are done using equipment. And even when turned off, electronic and
IT equipment often use a small amount of electricity. For home office equipment, this stand-by or “phantom” power load can range from a few watts to as much as 20 or even 40 watts for each piece of equipment. Using a power strip for your computer and all peripheral equipment allows you to completely disconnect the power supply from the power source, eliminating standby power consumption. 4. A 10-minute shower can use less water than a full bath. With a low-flow shower head, a 10-minute shower will use about 25 gallons of water, saving five gallons of water over a typical bath. A new showerhead will also save energy — up to $145 each year on electricity — beating out both the bath and an oldfashioned showerhead. 5. To keep out the heat of the summer sun, close window shades and drapes during the day. 6. Run the dishwasher with a full load and use the air-dry option if available. 7. Wash your laundry with cold water whenever possible. To save water, try to wash full loads or, if you must wash a partial load, reduce the level of water appropriately. Washing full loads can save you more than 3,400 gallons of water each year. 8. Don’t over-dry your clothes. Remember to clean the lint trap before every load. Dry full loads or reduce drying time for partial loads. One of the easiest things to increase drying efficiency is to clean the lint trap before each and every load. This step also can save up to $34 a year.

ADVICE | RENTAL RANTINGS
FIVE THINGS TO DO IN YOUR APARTMENT
WHEN SUMMER ARRIVES JENNIFER BRAUN Is it just me, or is everything actually better in the summer? Besides the obvious summer indulgences like a tan, ice cream and Frappuccinos, even nonsummer related activities just seem more enjoyable. Family gatherings are more lively, shopping is more fun and, heck, even exercising is more enjoyable – or at least as enjoyable as it can get. I also feel like the same applies to my rental. Not only will I be able to do more in my apartment when it’s summer, but everything I do just seems better. Like winter, summer is going to be over before you know it. Take advantage of it now and don’t miss out on these five things to do in your rental when summer finally arrives: 1. MAKE USE OF THE BALCONY:
Having a balcony was a serious priority while hunting for a rental, but how many times do you actually get to use it? Make sure you use it every chance you get this summer by enjoying the little things on it like a morning coffee and reading time. 2. DIY: Your Pinterest board is filled
with cool DIY projects you never got around to doing this winter. Fortunately, they’re even more fun to do in the summer. Pick a project and get DIY crazy, all while enjoying the fresh air from your open window and while catching afternoon sun rays (wearing that SPF, of course!).
3. ADD SOME COLOUR: The
change of season always inspires the decorator in all of us, and there’s no better time to brighten up your home than in the summer. Add some colour with small changes like brightly coloured pillows, a summer tablecloth or by bringing fresh flowers into your home. 4. THROW A DINNER PARTY:
Getting everyone in your home in the winter always feels like a hassle, so make it a point to invite people over for a dinner party this summer. Guests can keep their sandals on and the longer, sunnier days just feel more refreshing. Kill two birds with one stone and make it a barbecue so you can once again use your balcony. 5. USE THOSE AMENITIES: Your
into maintaining the amenities in your building, so make use of them. Spend some time poolside or take the time to relax on the shared patio. While you’re at it, be a good neighbour and catch up with your fellow tenants. As fun as it is to do things inside your rental now that it’s summer, don’t forget to spend lots of time outside, too. Discover your neighbourhood and check out new spots so you won’t mind hibernating once winter approaches. Happy summer! Jennifer Braun is a freelance lifestyle writer from Montreal. NEW EDINBURGH ACTIVE AND UPSCALE
LINDSAY FORAN New Edinburgh is bordered on the west by the Rideau River, to the north by the Ottawa River, to the south by Beechwood Avenue, and on the east by Princess Avenue. New Edinburgh is a unique mix of both its upscale neighbour, Rockcliffe Park, and the lowerincome neighbourhood of Vanier. These affluent residents are just as wealthy as the Rockliffe Parkers, but with perhaps a little less...pretention. New Edinburgh is an active community. The popular New Edinburgh Park boasts tennis
courts, bike paths through lush scenery, patios, outdoor markets, art shows and more. Swing by 24 Sussex and see if you can catch a glimpse of the prime minister. One of the nicest, best kept secrets is the Rideau Falls that shoot into the Rideau River. New Edinburgh, although home to only 3,100 residents, is a bustling community. The New Edinburgh patio is busy, the Second Cup parking lot is full, and new moms meet daily for their strollersize walks. These neighbours are quick to wave, but don’t misinterpret this as naiveté. If you seem in any way suspicious, these residents will be sure to have the local police on your tail in minutes.

New Edinburgh is home to many embassies, consulates, and yes, even the prime minister. You’ll pay higher rent because of the proximity to downtown as well as Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa’s most expensive neighbourhood. With the proximity to downtown and so many bike paths, many residents prefer to park their sedans and hop on bikes. For those who prefer to drive, Hwy. 417 is only minutes away.

KI T C H E N KNI VE S
s a kid, I remember being bombarded with infomercials for kitchen knife sets. I thought, to be a decent cook, I had to have more knives than there are stars in the night sky. I quickly learned 99 per cent of kitchen work is done with just three knives. PARING KNIFE. Typically three to four inches in length, this little guy is for detailed work. Think of it as your kitchen scalpel, peeling small fruits and vegetables, removing seeds, knocking the tops off strawberries, etc. SERRATED KNIFE (or “bread” knife). I’m not a fan of calling it a “bread” knife because it has more uses than just cutting bread. Super handy for anything that’s particularly fragile: layered cakes, pavlovas, tomatoes – I also find them helpful for peeling large hard vegetables like squash and pumpkin. CHEF’S KNIFE. This is a generic term that covers any blade between six or seven inches, typically up to 10 inches. Picking the right one is a matter of personal taste: varying in weight, handle grip, style, blade shape and overall feel.

CHICKEN & SHRIMP QUINOA PAELLA
INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb raw medium-sized shrimp (peeled if you prefer) • 1 med/large chicken breast, cut in 1/2-inch cubes
Paella is the perfect keep-them-all happy dish. Something for everyone and it’s also a great one for experimenting with a super wide range of meats, veggies and seafood.
• 1 medium white onion, finely diced • 3 garlic cloves, finely sliced • 1 tbsp each ground cumin and paprika • 1 each red and yellow bell pepper, finely chopped
TAKES
20 MINS SERVES
4
• 1 cup quinoa • 2 1/2 cups chicken, vegetable or fish broth • Juice and zest of 1 lemon • 1 tsp chili flakes (to taste) • 1/3 cup peas (frozen is fine) • 1 bunch of fresh parsley
INSTRUCTIONS » In a large pan over medium/ high heat, add a splash of olive oil. Add chicken, onion, garlic, cumin and paprika and sauté until garlic and onion are tender, about two minutes. Add bell peppers and cook for three to four minutes more.
» Add quinoa, broth, lemon zest, juice and chili flakes. Cover and bring to boil, then reduce to a simmer on medium/low and continue to cook until most of the liquid is absorbed and quinoa becomes al dente (approx. eight to 10 minutes). Stir occasionally. Add a little more stock if required. You’re looking for a consistency similar to risotto. » Last five minutes (just as quinoa becomes al dente), add shrimp and peas and cover until shrimp is cooked. Be sure quinoa remains al dente, you don’t want it to be soggy. Check and adjust seasoning, serve with torn parsley, a good splash of olive oil and fresh lemons.
Chef Mike’s top three tips for buying a knife GOOD QUALITY WILL LAST YOU A LIFETIME. Specifically, good quality steel holds its edge longer. As a general rule, it’s hard to go wrong with German and Japanese steel. A blunt knife is a dangerous knife, dull edges create unpredictability, and that leads to “ouch!” A GOOD QUALITY KNIFE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL MORE CONFIDENT. It should feel like an extension of your hand, and it will do what you ask it to with predictability and safety. I can’t explain it better; it’s just a feeling you experience when you hold a fantastic knife. TAKE A LITTLE EXTRA CARE: Virtually all knives are dishwasher safe nowadays, but I prefer to run the blade under hot water and wipe it down and not put my darlings through the torture of being bashed around with other utensils in the dishwasher. If you’ve invested good money, take that extra 30 seconds and your knives will reward you with a lifetime of excellent service. CHECK OUT CHEFMIKEWARD.COM FOR A SELECTION OF GOOD QUALITY KNIVES! 19

ADVICE | MONEY MATTERS
WHY YOU’RE IN DEBT DO YOU USE CREDIT TO BUY
GAIL VAZ-OXLADE
People who are in debt often say they no longer want to be in debt. And often they take the steps to get themselves out. But, it seems to me, there are people who claim they want to get out of debt but do little to change their behaviour and the outcome. They keep on doing the things that got them into debt in the first place. Here are four questions you may want to ask about why you’re in the hole.
THINGS YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO BUY WITH CASH?
If you can’t afford to pay for something in cash today, you should not be buying that thing, I don’t care how important you think it is, how great a deal you’re getting, or how desperate you feel. Using credit is no way to get out of debt. Put away all forms of credit and commit to building yourself a budget that balances. If you want something, you’ll have to give up something else to accumulate the cash you need to buy it. DO YOU BUY THINGS FOR A ONE-TIME USE THAT YOU COULD BORROW FROM
DO YOU BUY STUFF
A FRIEND OR RENT?
YOU DON’T NEED?
Practically everyone is guilty of this. You need something such as a sewing machine or power washer twice a year so you go and buy one and then watch it – and the money you spent, likely on credit – sit and grow cobwebs (and interest charges?) What’s with us all? In the old days, friends borrowed from each other and stuff got way more use. Now our possessions are so much a part of who we are we a) hate to lend and b) hate to have to admit we don’t already have one. Dumb!
The biggest cue that you’ve got the impulse monkey on your back are the things you have bought but not used: the clothes with the tags still on, the shoes you have yet to wear, the new dishes you’ve used once in the six months that you’ve owned them. Impulse shoppers are the first to admit they have a problem and the last to do anything about it. If you’re an impulse shopper, you need to remove the fuel for the impulse. That means cutting up your credit cards – or disabling them in some other fashion – and limiting the amount of cash you carry. It also means leaving your debit card at home unless you’re headed out to take care of a need: gas, groceries, etc. When you do go shopping, you have to use a list and stick to it. Window shopping is torture for the impulse shopper so don’t browse stores since you’re just teasing yourself by drooling over a bunch of stuff you don’t need.
DO YOU BUY CERTAIN BRANDS BECAUSE THEY
you don’t have confidence in your own sense of style? Is it because you’re trying to emulate the dudes and dames of TV and movie fame, wearing what they wear, driving what they drive, eating what they eat? How come? Hey, I’m all for spending your money on the things that bring you pleasure, so if you’re not using credit to make expensive brands part of your image, I’m not talking to you. But if you are using credit, what makes you think you have the right to this stuff if you can’t afford to pay for it?
ARE A STATUS SYMBOL?
While any car gets you from point A to point B, high-cost, brand-name buggies come with “oohs” and “ahhs” from friends and relatives. Ditto the D&G sunglasses, the LV handbags, the CL shoes . . . I could go on forever. If you’re paying a premium to have a brand name, you have to ask yourself why. Is it because

ADVICE | QUICK TIPS
PLAY CATCH-UP THIS SUMMER AND MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME OFF
HELLEN BUTTIGIEG Summer is a great time to get all the little tasks that have been piling up off your plate. And once you have taken care of all these chores, you can lounge by the pool, guilt-free. ORGANIZE YOUR PHOTOS
Gather your supplies now and make the next rainy day your photo-organizing day. You’ll need several acid-free photo boxes, some plastic “dollar store” baskets (about 10), “sticky” notes and a few markers. Set up on the kitchen or dining room table, put some music on and have a predetermined break time. Begin by labelling each basket with a broad category using your sticky notes and markers. Then use the baskets to start sorting the collection of photos you’ve gathered. Categories should be broad and relevant to your photos. Examples can include: pets, holidays, parties, school, friends, family celebrations, etc. Once the photos are sorted, transfer them into photo boxes and use the index cards that often accompany the boxes to identify the categories. If you have hundreds of photos under one category, simply label the outside of the box with the topic. THROW A CLOTHES SWAP
When the seasons change, it’s a perfect time to clean out your closets. Plan a neighbourhood
clothes swap party to trade your cast-offs for other treasures. Donate any unclaimed threads to a local charity.
disposal. Or, inquire whether your municipality offers drop-off points similar to those for hazardous and electronic waste.
ORGANIZE COSMETICS AND
ROUND UP RECIPES
TOILETRIES
Organizing your favourite recipes makes retrieval quick and easy. Purchase a plastic accordion file in your favourite colour with at least 10 slots. Use the labels included to write out specific categories. Categories may include: desserts, appetizers, salads, poultry, beef, seafood, etc. File recipes at the front of the corresponding category and get cooking!
Take advantage of the height in cupboards under bathroom counters by using plastic storage drawers to store cosmetics and toiletries. Sterilite makes this item, and you can find it at most department stores. Usually it comes with three drawers, but if you have the height, you can stack a second unit on top. Store items in broad categories and label each drawer. Categories may include: dental products, facial products, hair products, etc. MEMORABILIA WITHOUT MESS
If you have bits and pieces of memorabilia piling up all over your home, it’s time to create a memory box. Purchase or re-purpose one container for each family member; choose plastic bins, photo boxes, hat boxes, vintage suitcases or old-fashioned picnic baskets to store precious mementos. Be selective about what goes inside, and when the containers are full, remove one item before putting another item inside. GET RID OF OLD MEDICATION SAFELY
When purging expired medication, do not flush the pills down the toilet. This can contaminate municipal water supplies. Check with your local pharmacy to see whether you can drop them off for environmentally safe
ORGANIZING YOUR LIFE
Do you feel your life is so “crazy busy” that you never seem to find time for fun? One way to make space for the things that matter most is to re-evaluate what you’ve committed your time to and consider letting go of some obligations. Think of three activities you are doing because you feel you “should” even though you don’t really want to. Choose one to let go of for now, and replace it with an activity that brings you joy. Now watch and see what happens. Hellen Buttigieg is a Certified Professional Organizer, life coach, TV host and owner of We Organize U.
