STAYING WARM INSIDE WHEN IT’S COLD OUTSIDE This year, it seemed as if winter just didn’t want to let go. Sure, temperatures are finally in the double digits, but an ice storm on April 14 and 15 in the GTA and parts of Eastern Ontario told a different story. Snow, sleet, below-zero temperatures, 100/ km hour winds – it was pretty cold outside. But what about inside? For renters with heat included in their rent, what does it mean when it begins to snow in mid-April?

In Ottawa, according to city bylaws, maintaining a level of heat in a rental unit is not a seasonal responsibility: it’s an every day one. “Adequate and suitable heat” means every day between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. the air temperature in the centre of each reasonably ventilated room must not be less than 16.67 degrees Celsius. During the day, between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., the temperature in the centre of each reasonably ventilated room must not be less than 20 degrees Celsius. A landlord who doesn’t maintain adequate heat could be liable to a fine of up to $5,000.

Most landlords want to keep their tenants happy and warm. It’s within their interest to do so. But if your landlord fails to provide heat in accordance with the provisions of the Residential Tenancies Act and the regulations, you can file an application with the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board to have the Board determine an appropriate remedy.

COMBINING HOUSEHOLDS

FOR THE FIRST TIME CHUCK RESNICK Forty years ago, most couples did not live together. The majority married and before they did, they were often still living at home.

A traditional wedding shower was important and carried great value as it supplied newlyweds with all the necessities married life required, including dishes, cookware and bedding.

Fast-forward to today. With many people living on their own before they move in together or get married, combining households for the first time takes proper planning to start off on the right foot.

Whether you’re getting married for the first time, the second time or are deciding to move in together as a committed couple, you probably both have a lot of 16 RentersGuide.ca

your own stuff. The dilemma now becomes whose couch stays, and tallying how many flat-screen TVs you have between the two of you.

Here are some helpful tips for combining households: » Go through each existing home together and identify which items are duplicates.

Talk about each item honestly.

If you can legitimately use two of something in your new life, such as televisions or stereos, go ahead and keep both, but don’t wait to have the discussion on moving day. » Do the same evaluation for small items, such as silverware, as you do for the larger items.

These smaller items can add up quickly, and often produce the most clutter. » Organize with boxes and coloured markers. Purchase empty boxes at a moving store or get some of varying sizes at a local store before you begin so

you can appropriately tag and box items that stay and those that go. » Think about donating to those in need. If a garage sale isn’t of interest, consider donating to local charities, fundraisers or homeless shelters.

Experts agree that couples can successfully blend two households if they take time on the front end to address the move. The key, as with all organizing projects, is proper planning.

We asked Pam Helms, co-founder of the plant-derived household cleaner brand Mrs. Meyer’s, to give us the lowdown on how to clean our bedroom essentials for a sweeter night’s sleep

BLANKETS

Machine wash cotton blankets in warm water. Wash wool with laundry detergent on the gentle cycle in cold water. Spin blankets in the washer until all excess moisture is extracted. Gently stretch blankets back to their original size (measure first if you’re not sure what that is) before air drying.

SHEETS AND PILLOW CASES

Since these are in close contact with your skin, wash them once a week – or more frequently if someone has been sick. Wash cotton, cotton blends, flannel, synthetics or bamboo in hot water to kill bacteria; dry them on low. Remember to fold sheets right away so wrinkles won’t set in.

COMFORTERS

Place them in the dryer for just a few minutes to fluff up, and then hang heavy comforters, quilts and wool blankets on several clotheslines to balance out the weight so they won’t stretch. Clean your clotheslines with a damp rag before each use.

QUILTS

Put these in the washer on the gentle cycle, but make sure to use cold water and laundry detergent. If you have a homemade quilt, you don’t want to wash it too often, or it’ll show its wear. If your quilt is an heirloom, have it professionally cleaned.

MATTRESS PADS

Wash these once a month (unless they’re soiled, in which case wash them right away!) in hot water and air dry. Doctors may advise allergy and asthma sufferers to wash them more frequently.

RUGS

We love Mrs. Meyer’s 64-load laundry detergent in lavender scent. $16 mrsmeyers.com

Wash small cotton or synthetic rugs and bath mats (even those with rubber or latex backings) in cold water on the gentle cycle.

Air dry.

CURTAINS

Cotton curtains can be washed in cold water. Air dry, then iron them when they’re slightly damp to get out those wrinkles before they set in.

What does “We Inc.” mean? It means handling your family’s finances as carefully as you would some stranger’s money. It means making a shift in the way you think about your money. Your focus changes and you begin to acknowledge that whomever else you work for, your top financial priority should be you and your family.

“We Inc.” means creating a mission statement, following the rules of money management so the auditors – anyone who has an interest in your record keeping such as your banker, the tax man or your spouse – won’t have a hissy-fit, and making sure you stay afloat, so you can continue to pay your primary employee: you. And it means paying attention to the details so the corporation (your family) continues to function and meet the expectations of the major shareholder (you).

If Suzi had spent one-tenth the time managing her own finances with the vigour she poured into her role as an office manager, she’d have been in control of her money.

SET SOME GOALS

Corporations have finance departments, controllers and internal auditors, yet only 25 per cent of us regular folk have a written financial plan. So threequarters of us are walking around without a map.

As the chief financial officer for We Inc., you need a strategy for managing your money. That means setting some goals and establishing the priorities for how money will flow in and out.

First, what’s your personal mission statement? Do you want to retire by the time you’re 55?

Second, what are the spending and earning goals that will help you accomplish your mission?

Without a budget, it’s hard to determine if you’re working to meet your priorities, or just keeping your head above water.

MANAGE THE DETAILS

Corporations are disciplined.

They do cash-flow statements monthly, reconcile their bank statements at least that often, and keep meticulous records. So should you. Handling these details isn’t hard, but it does take time.

Unfortunately, we are more willing to watch television than actively manage our money. That wouldn’t fly at the office, (“Sorry boss, but Idol is on right now – make your own copies.”), and it won’t at We Inc. either, once you begin to take your own money seriously.

Doing the details at home means setting up files, meeting deadlines, and administering your portfolio. Monthly contributions to a retirement savings plan, regular repayment of debt and serious attention to cash flow (read: don’t bounce any cheques) are all examples of this discipline. The shoe-box full of financial records and the last-minute scramble to find those tax receipts are good examples of what not to do.

HIRE EXPERTS

Corporations hire consultants, financial advisers and independent external resources to help them get the job done. You, too, should recognize that different tasks require expertise in different areas.

Seeking independent financial information or advice is a good thing to do, especially when you are out of your particular area of expertise.
