EDITOR’S NOTE

AVERAGE RENT IS NOT A GOOD BUDGET INDICATOR There is a lot of discussion about the average rent in a city. Organizations like the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) collect data on rent, and this number is often cited in the news. But don’t expect to set your own rental budget by that average. Rent varies between provinces and cities — but there’s also significant variation within a city and within neighbourhoods. Safer, trendier and more upscale areas are going to demand higher rents, while less expensive options will be available at the other end of the spectrum. It’s supply and demand that dictates pricing, and these days, the current supply is not meeting the demand. Average rent also doesn’t take into account elements like onsite amenities or parking, nor does it address the difference between all-inclusive rentals versus ones where all of the utilities, parking and laundry are extra. When you’re ready to move, start looking in a neighbourhood in which you’d like to live and see what the average rents are. If you wish to search solely based on price, investigate all the details to ensure you know what to expect. There are still deals to be had, but often they are under market value for a reason. If this is the time for you to make a move, we hope this issue of Renters Guide can help. Or check us out online at NextHome.ca, and get ready to rent your new home!

expert, Janette Ewen, for tips on making next year’s festivities seamless. No stranger to throwing great parties, Janette hosted two this past season; a traditional soirée for her family here in Toronto and a vintage-themed fête in

tip.

Palm Springs, Calif. for friends. “I even rented a mid-century modern home to set the tone for my retro-themed party in Palm Springs,” Ewen says. Now, that is someone who is serious about throwing a great party! Get inspired by

4}

her fail-safe entertaining tips.

1} tip.

2} tip. 10

ALWAYS START WITH A THEME. Pick a fun theme that everyone will enjoy (I chose a 1950s-inspired holiday party this year). A strong theme helps shape the decor, cocktail menu, food, invites, gifts, music, dress and even the scent of your home. For 2018, the top holiday themes all have a glamorous twist: Think gold, silver and plenty of sparkle.

LET EVERYONE HELP. Entertaining shouldn’t be laborious for the host. Instead, use your friends as resources. Do you have a friend who can mix a mean cocktail? A friend who likes to play DJ? Tap into your friends’ talents for a stress-free night of fun. Assign one small task to each friend. You will free yourself up for your most important role — as host!

tip.

5} tip.

DECOR GOALS. There are many ways to have fun with your tabletop decor, but most important is a low centrepiece. You don’t want your guests dodging their heads around a large item to have a conversation. Think about using a floral garland or a macramé table runner with a grouping of low candles.

STAGE YOUR SPACE. If you are having a cocktail party, make sure you leave clear pathways to key areas of the kitchen, bar area and washroom. I like to edit my furniture and remove any trip hazards like low stools or tables. Create seating clusters (three-four seats and one-two cocktail tables) in areas that are low traffic. These will invite conversation and give a party a relaxed vibe. FOOD FOR THOUGHT. I love to prepare unique appetizers, and President’s Choice has a huge selection. These can be real conversation starters and are easy to prepare. Another big trend is anything retro (recipes from the 1950s and ‘60s). Consider picking up a vintage cookbook and making a few recipes from a different era. I also love saving a little money on food during the holidays. I use my PC Financial World Elite MasterCard to maximize my holiday spending and redeem my PC points on groceries and other hosting requirements to offset the costs. Essentially, I’m getting more for less every time I use my card. Visit pcfinancial.ca

ANTIPASTO MISTO SNACK BOARD

Antipasto Misto Snack Board

A cheese and charcuterie board is one of the easiest ways to feed your guests – the key is to offer a variety of flavours, textures and colours. PC Splendido Antipasto Misto gives you three types of cured meats for this board – prosciutto, Coppa di Parma and mild Genoa salami – so you can cover all your bases with just one package. Feel free to add sliced pears and grapes to the board for an extra pop of colour. For more inspiring recipes, visit presidentschoice.ca Makes: 10 servings • Prep time: 5 minutes Ready in: 5 minutes • Difficulty Level: Easy

INGREDIENTS 1 pkg (200 g) PC Cocktail Bocconcini Soft Fresh Cheese, drained 1 tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh basil

1. Stir together bocconcini, basil, oil, peperoncini and salt in large bowl. Transfer to serving bowl. Place on large serving board. 2. Halve prosciutto from Antipasto Misto crosswise. Arrange prosciutto and remaining contents of Antipasto Misto package on same board. 3. Arrange brie cheese, blue cheese, crackers, gherkins, red peppers and olives on same board. Smear mustard directly onto board, or transfer to small serving dish and place on board. * Chef’s Tip: For the best flavour, bring the brie cheese and blue cheese to room temperature before serving – just be sure to keep the meats chilled until you’re ready to serve.

NEW EDINBURGH ACTIVE AND UPSCALE

LINDSAY FORAN New Edinburgh is bordered on the west by the Rideau River, to the north by the Ottawa River, to the south by Beechwood Avenue, and on the east by Princess Avenue. New Edinburgh is a unique mix of both its upscale neighbour, Rockcliffe Park, and the lowerincome neighbourhood of Vanier. These affluent residents are just as wealthy as the Rockliffe Parkers, but with perhaps a little less...pretention. New Edinburgh is an active community. The popular New Edinburgh Park boasts tennis

courts, bike paths through lush scenery, patios, outdoor markets, art shows and more. Swing by 24 Sussex and see if you can catch a glimpse of the prime minister. One of the nicest, best kept secrets is the Rideau Falls that shoot into the Rideau River. New Edinburgh, although home to only 3,000 residents, is a bustling community. The New Edinburgh patio is busy, the Second Cup parking lot is full, and the new moms meet daily for their strollersize walks. These neighbours are quick to wave, but don’t misinterpret this as naivete. If you seem in any way suspicious, these residents will be sure to have the local police on your tail in minutes.

New Edinburgh is home to many embassies, consulates, and yes, even the prime minister. You’ll pay higher rent because of the proximity to downtown as well as Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa’s most expensive neighbourhood. With the proximity to downtown and so many bike paths, many residents prefer to park their sedans and hop on bikes. For those who prefer to drive, Hwy. 417 is only minutes away.

ADVICE | MOVING

HOW TO AVOID YOUR OWN MOVING HORROR STORY

WAYNE KARL

Next time you move, you will likely need a mover. People often don’t consider a mover beyond simply finding someone available and then booking the move. However, given the critical role movers perform – taking possession, at least temporarily, of all your worldly goods and moving them without loss or damage – it’s a function not to be taken for granted. Not doing your due diligence and taking the time to select a reputable mover can invite untold problems. Case in point: the following example is all too common. So is the lesson learned – unfortunately, the hard way. I contracted a “professional” moving company to carry out a last-minute move of five pieces of furniture on behalf of my son, a university student. For a variety of reasons, we decided to hire movers rather than rent a truck. After calling several firms – including large, well-known companies and smaller, independent ones, we confirmed the place of pick-up, and drop-off. We agreed on a price ($350) and time (9 a.m.) – and I had been very clear the move would involve an out-of-town destination. All the details were confirmed in a “contract” exchanged via email. The crew was on time for the move the next morning, but almost immediately began talking about a higher rate – $360. Not a huge 20

difference, but it immediately raised my suspicions. I’ll spare you all the gory details, but it’s important to share the lowlights of what happened next: » The company I originally contracted the job to the night before was inexplicably unavailable to actually do the move the next morning, and apparently passed it off to another firm. » My original contact, who was easily available on cell phone repeatedly the night before, was suddenly nowhere to be found. » Once the truck was loaded, the fee increased to $450. » Upon arrival at our destination, the movers said the fee was now $500. “It’s taking longer than we thought, and the furniture is heavier,” they said. » “Sure,” I replied, “right after I call the police.” With that, the sordid tale ended. The job was not completed and left for us to move the furniture indoors, now the victims of one of the top 10 scams monitored by the Better Business Bureau (BBB). “I could write a thesis on this,” John Levi, president of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) told me. CAM offers consumers the following tips on how to avoid being scammed by unscrupulous movers: » Find reputable movers through the CAM, BBB or provincial government consumer protection agencies » Ask three movers for estimates in writing

» Get the terms and conditions in writing » Ensure your goods will be protected for loss or damage » Read customer reviews on movers’ websites and other forums “Consumers have recourse with their provincial government’s consumer affairs department and with the BBB,” says Levi. “Both of these avenues are fraught with difficulties and often take many months to come to some form of resolution – satisfactory or otherwise. And often, the mover simply out-waits the consumer. “It’s far simpler and more effective to engage a reputable mover in advance rather than trying to fix a bad situation after-the-fact.” My example, though painful and infuriating, is minor compared to other common horror stories involving similarly unsuspecting clients. Make sure you take the proper steps – and the time – to protect yourself.
