IT’S COLD AND SLIPPERY, but with some extra safety precautions, winter moving also has many advantages.

Moving last minute? No problem, if it’s during the cold months. Choosing to move in the “off season” – some time between November and March – can save you time and money.

Some companies may be more willing to negotiate their rates during the winter months as they’re competing for business during the slow season.

Likewise, less rush and stress for companies in the winter means you get their best employees, resulting in a higher quality of service.

With everything booked, now comes the packing. Follow these tips for a relaxed and toasty move – no matter what’s going on outside those frosted windows.

• Keep up to date with local weather forecasts and change your plans accordingly. If a big snowfall or freezing rain is expected the morning of your move day, don’t risk it.

• Carry extra warm clothes for you and your family – including hats, gloves RentersGuide.ca and snow pants. Pack these ahead of time and clearly label them so you can locate them immediately.

• Remember your items will be in a non-heated environment for a while.

liquids are properly packed and protected from the cold.

• Allow extra time on the move day – cold weather slows things down.

Additionally, rushing in the winter can lead to accidents and injuries.

• Have driveways and sidewalks cleared of snow before the movers arrive. Your driveway needs to be ploughed wider than usual – enough to allow the moving truck’s loading ramp to be positioned as close to your front door as possible. Lay plywood down on slushy areas. Slipping can lead to dropped boxes, broken possessions and personal injury.

• Quality movers will use floor runners to protect your floors in high traffic area but for extra protection inside, cover your floors to protect them from tracked-in snow, mud, and salt.

• Drive safe. Make sure maintenance and service on your vehicles is current. Check the air pressure on your tires and ensure the trunk is equipped with emergency kits (matches, flashlight, food), blankets, and shovels. Drive with extra caution.

• Be certain that the heating company for your new place is aware of your move-in day.

With these reminders, you’ll be packed up, moved and basking in the warmth of your new home before you know it.

CONTRARY TO WHAT YOU MIGHT THINK, there are similarities between living with a roommate and someone you’re involved with romantically. Your approach should reflect what it would in any interpersonal relationship. Be considerate of the other person’s needs, and strive for good communication to encourage equity and fairness in your living arrangement.

FURNISHING: The first issue you’ll need to address if you decide to live with someone is how the apartment will be furnished. One – or both – of you may have furniture.

Whose stuff do you keep and whose stuff gets stored or sold?

Conversely, you may need to acquire a lot of the furnishings and housewares you’ll need to live in your apartment. Discuss how you will make decorating decisions and purchases. If you provide something, and your roommate or a guest damages something, who would be responsible? If you share the costs, who gets it if and when you move on?

EXPENSES: As roommates, discuss how you will pay the rent.

Will one person make the payment each month and the other pay the roommate half the amount? Will the landlord take cheques from each? Or will you use another arrangement? If a last month’s rent deposit is required, it’s easier if each tenant puts up half, in case one person wants to move out before the other. And moving out should have its stipulations too, like enough notice that nobody is scrambling to find a new roommate, and notice to change things up with the landlord.

There are legal obligations when all parties are listed on the lease. What about your hydro, Internet and cable? Will one person be responsible for paying all the bills? How will they be split up? If you’re a couple and there is disparity in your incomes, clarify the financial expectations before signing your lease. Are you a noisy night owl? What about guests? Be sure to discuss your lifestyle preferences with your roommate so there won’t be any surprises. For example, do you like to have a lot of friends over regularly, or are you the type of person who goes out after work and tends to come home late in the evenings? Would you be put out if your roommate had their boyfriend or girlfriend over all the time, or a friend occupying the guest room regularly? Having constant guests can wear on the roommate relationship because a guest will enjoy the living area and use the home without having any financial responsibility.

Ground rules are a good idea.

FOOD AND INCIDENTALS: This is more of a challenge between roommates rather than those who have blended finances. Will you share the cost of food – and the work involved in preparing and cleaning up meals? It can be highly impractical to have two containers of everything. If you are a vegetarian or have food allergies, it would be pragmatic to cohabit with someone who is sensitive to your situation. Do you share leftovers? Do you have a strict ‘replace what you take’ policy? Are you going to have a ‘communal kitty’ where you each put a specified amount each week to cover the cost of frequently replaced items you share, like toilet paper, dish soap and light bulbs? Decide before issues arise.

A secret to successful cohabitation is understanding the other person’s goals and expectations, and being like-minded on some of the issues that can become major problems. YOU PROBABLY DON’T WANT TO SINK A FORTUNE INTO YOUR RENTAL, especially if you don’t plan on staying for the long term. However, you don’t have to make do with eggshellRentersGuide.ca painted bare walls either. PAINT. If you really can’t stand the neutral wall colour, try asking your landlord if you can paint, even if it’s only one feature wall (if you promise paint it back when you leave it may help). If they say no, there are still plenty of options when it comes to adding personality into your space.

A VARIETY OF STORES. Mix and match your furniture pieces, don’t purchase everything at once. My general rule of thumb is to shop at a minimum of three different stores when furnishing your home. You don’t have to buy everything at the same time, shop around and turn your place into a story.

ART. If your landlord doesn’t want holes in the walls, you’ve got a few options when it comes to artwork and wall-hung accessories. You can purchase pieces that are free standing, such as my personal favourite, large floorstanding mirrors. Mirrors are a great way to make a room look larger and feel more upscale. Your second option is using stick-on hooks (you can find these at any home improvement store) that are guaranteed not to create surface damage and can hold quite a lot of weight. There is a wide range of sizes and styles available that will suit your undressed-wall’s needs!

VISUAL INTEREST. Create some visual interest in your rental unit by placing a large, floor-to-ceiling, free standing book shelf to cover one of your empty walls and to make use of your vertical space. This can easily be a feature wall, and a great way to show off your belongings. Make sure whatever you place on the shelves are at varying heights. Book shelves aren’t only for books anymore- you can dedicate a shelf for your glassware including vases of different colours and sizes, and you can also purchase baskets to place on a couple shelves that serve as great storage and a great place to hide clutter.

COLOURS, PATTERNS AND TEXTURES. Liven up the space with different colours, patterns and textures. When mixing patterns, make sure the scales differ, for example, match a large-scale floral with a small-scale stripe. You can bring in these elements in varying ways. Throw cushions, area rugs, bedding and upholstery are just a few options.

Be creative and let your style shine through.

You may feel frustrated at first when it comes to decorating your rental unit. No paint, no holes and no major changes doesn’t mean no style. Weather you are staying for the short-term or the long run; you can still make your rental an inviting, warm and cozy place to call home.

EVERYTHING AROUND YOU HAS AN IMPACT ON YOU

whether you realize it or not. When you create and develop your décor, you are trying to set the tone of the room – give it a certain look and feel. You take time to include pieces you like and enjoy, whether they are part of the design or part of the function of the room. But other pieces make their way into your space, even though they may not belong there or may be there for the wrong reasons. By organizing, de-cluttering and streamlining, you can make sure your environment has the right effect!

Is clutter getting you down? Surrounding ourselves with items that mean something to us brings pleasure.

And then there’s all the other stuff. Often when we feel down but can’t figure out why, it could be the clutter. Even if it’s stuffed in the back of the closet, the basement or the garage, you know it’s there.

Every item holds a vibrational energy; if you’ve buried sad reminders of disappointments from your past, know that as long as you keep these emotionally toxic things in your space, they are still haunting you. Break free from the past and make space for new opportunities to come into your life. If it’s in storage and bringing you sorrow, now is a great time to let it go. Out with the old, in with the new!

Eliminate your clutter hot spots We all have certain spots in our homes that have become magnets for clutter, usually because they provide a convenient, empty, flat surface to pile things on. Walk around your home to determine where the clutter hot spots are, then remove the clutter (toss it in a box or laundry basket for now) and put something beautiful in its place, like a vase or a sculpture.

If it’s the dining room table, set it as if you were having a dinner party. This will deter you from using it as a drop zone. Walk around your home with the box you tossed everything into and deposit these items where they belong, either in the garbage or recycle box or stored elsewhere in your house. If they don’t have a proper home, create one.

Detaching from sentimental attachment Things that have a story attached to them are often difficult to let go of because of the sentimental attachment. Keep in mind that the item is not the memory; it simply triggers the memory.

It may be beneficial to take a picture of the item and put it RentersGuide.ca in a scrapbook or photo album with a short note telling its 40

story. That way, the memory is preserved without taking up as much space. Another option is to pass along the items to a family member who could put them to good use.

Daily de-clutter habit. You brush your teeth every day.

You shower every day. Why not de-clutter every day too?

Make it a habit, just like the examples I gave, and it will become second-nature. Throughout the day, when you pull something out, take a moment to put it back when you are finished with it. At the end of the day, take a couple of minutes to do a “clean sweep” of your home and put away anything that is out of place. Keep a sticky note somewhere on your way to your bedroom to remind you for the first little while. After doing it for a month, you can take the note down because it will have become a habit – one that will serve you beautifully for the rest of your life. This simple practice can help you cut down on clutter without taking a lot of time and effort.
