Trending | GET ORGANIZED

Four organizing myths that keep your life in disarray By Hellen Buttigieg

MORE ADVICE ONLINE ypnexthome.ca/news/advice

IT’S TIME TO DISPEL some organizing myths that may be keeping you stuck in your mess.

1 | Multi-tasking is always productive. False. Although useful in some situations, multi-tasking can cause you to lose your focus and make costly and time-consuming mistakes. When working on important tasks, multi-tasking is probably not a good idea. Some things require your undivided attention. Multi-tasking distracts us from being in the present moment, which can drain our energy and leave us feeling exhausted and unfulfilled. The next time you are participating in an activity, commit to that activity rather than thinking about all the things you should be doing instead, or have to do later. Resist the urge to do two things at once. 2 | Being messy automatically means you are disorganized. False. Organizing is not about how it looks, it’s about how it works. Visual, creative types need to have things out where they can see them because out-of-sight is out-of-mind for them. This may cause their spaces to appear disorganized to others, but they probably know exactly where everything is. On the flip side, visual types lose focus when there is too much to look at, so they need products that allow them to contain their belongings to minimize the visual clutter. For example, a literature 10

YPNEXTHOME.CA

sorter allows them to contain their papers while still keeping them within view. 3 | You have to toss everything to get organized. False. I often hear people say to me, “There’s no way I could get organized because I am too sentimental. I don’t want to get rid of everything.” Although you shouldn’t keep things you don’t like or will never use, there’s always a way to either display or store the things that matter. For example, shadow boxes or display cases allow you to protect as well as showcase the possessions that truly mean something to you.

4 | If you write it on a to-do list, it will get done. False. I had a client who was so proud of her to-do list. It was prioritized, colour coded and categorized, yet she was frustrated and overwhelmed at how many things on the list were not getting done. To get anything done, you have to actually schedule time to do the things on your list. Simply putting a task on a list is not a commitment. Blocking time on your calendar to do it is.

The competition There are so many people applying for the same apartment that it’s easy to become frustrated. It’s hard enough moving, but when faced with massive competition in the rental market because of low vacancy rates, it can become very overwhelming. Stop! Do what any team would do: Size up the competition. Prioritize, make a budget and look at your options. Look at how you’re going about applying for apartments. Why aren’t you getting them? The candidate that got the apartment – what did they do differently than you? In competitive times you need to be the best applicant. There are a few things that successful applicants do. Be polite and concise in your communications. Don’t skip pleasantries; don’t go for slang; and don’t say everything that’s on your mind. Sometimes you just click with the landlord and get chatty. They will often ask questions to get an impression of you. Be aware, it’s not just pleasantries, it’s like you’re in a job interview. Don’t lose sight of that and

+ get social 12

get too personal. Be prepared with reference letters and all of the info you’ll need for the application. Have your chequebook and the money for the deposit ready. If you can, bring a copy of your credit report to leave with your application. Being very organized and proactive will set you apart. Don’t speak badly of anyone your past landlord, your ex that you’re moving away from or the last building’s super. Look around, compliment the place and be engaged. Let the landlord know you can provide anything else that will help you get the apartment (not a bribe though!) like additional references or even a co-signer if your credit might be an issue. Finally, let them know you really want to live there, not because you are tired of apartment hunting, but because you love the place. If you’re ready to move, let Renters Guide help. Flooding in Ottawa-Gatineau –

Brigil’s support for the community: $10,000 donation By Elisa Krovblit

THE COUNTRY HAS BEEN hit hard by rain and weather over

the last few weeks, with some areas undergoing evacuation and extensive damage. Sandbagging, property damage and dangerous conditions around waterways are strongly affecting life in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. The flooding has resulted in the evacuation of over 500 homes in Gatineau and 75 on the Ottawa side and the region. In total, over 1,000 people to date are being tended to by the Red Cross, which has come into the flood area to help mitigate this natural disaster. In order to assist the Red Cross and the victims, the Desjardins family and Brigil are providing a cash donation of $10,000. Ms. Marie-Krystine Longpré, assistant director of Corporate Donations of the Red Cross, on behalf of the Red Cross, thanked and commended Brigil and the Desjardins family for their generosity. Brigil also thanks the thousands of volunteers who are supporting the victims, the Red Cross’s people, city employees, and the army soldiers who are working hard to help the people. “Since the onset of the flooding, Canadian Red Cross teams have been present in the affected communities, working closely alongside all levels of government to coordinate response efforts across the country and assist those in need.” Conrad Sauve, president and CEO, Canadian Red Cross.

In order to assist the Red Cross and the victims, the Desjardins family and Brigil are providing a cash donation of $10,000. 14

YPNEXTHOME.CA

It’s incredible to see the city step into action and help fellow residents. The affected areas are dangerous and safety measures are in place to keep people out of harm’s way. The main flood locations include Cumberland, Constance Bay, Fitzroy Harbour, Dunrobin, MacLarens Landing and Britannia, according to The City of Ottawa’s latest update. Over 200,000 sandbags have been distributed. The city’s protocol is at a level just before State of Emergency measures. In Quebec, there are 25 flood areas and many have had a State of Emergency declared, including the town of Pontiac which where a mandatory evacuation order was issued. Gatineau was identified as one of the communities that suffered the worst impact of flooding. With hopes that the flood waters have reached their maximum potential and are now receding, the next steps will be mitigating the damage and loss of residents. It will be a significant wait before it’s safe for displaced residents to return home. Without the help of the Red Cross, the army, wonderful residents volunteering and humanitarians like Brigil stepping up, the situation would be even worse. An appeal for donations has been launched by the Red Cross to help support residents of New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia as there have been thousands displaced across the country. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has been asked to start Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians Program to support residents of Ottawa who have been affected. Anyone able to make a donation to The Spring Floods Appeal can contact the Red Cross online at redcross.ca, by phone, toll-free at 1-800-418-1111 and by contacting a local Canadian Red Cross office.

LITTLE ITALY IS LOCATED in

Centretown We,st and is the heart of Ottawa’s Italian community. Little Italy is bordered on the north by Albert Street, to the east by Bronson Avenue, to the South by Carling Avenue and the west by the O-Train tracks. Founded in 1900 by Italian immigrants, Little Italy has grown into a strong, energetic community. Cultural pride is second to none in Little Italy. Whether it’s St. Anthony’s Feast, that draws over 10,000 people to the steps of St. Anthony’s Church every year, or Italian Week, residents of Little Italy are proud to celebrate their traditions and happy to share

them with all. Little Italy is one of Ottawa’s most vibrant and exciting neighbourhoods. Entering through the archway on Preston Street (also known as Corso Italia), lit at night with the Italian flag, it feels as if you have entered another world, where fun and family are paramount. Historically, the neighbourhood was primarily made up of Italian families. In recent years, however, demographics have shifted, now offering a wider diversity. The flavour is more historical than reflective of the population. This is a diverse neighbourhood ranging from young

professionals to retirees. With access to many major bus routes and close to the O-Train, getting around on public transportation isn’t a problem. Very walkable, major landmarks and destinations, including downtown, are a reasonable distance away. For those who choose to drive, parking could be a problem in the evenings and on weekends but the many side streets do offer parking so don’t be too scared to try your luck.

Lindsay has lived in the Ottawa/Gatineau area her whole life. When she’s not touring the city in search of the hottest new neighbourhood spots, she’s busy writing fiction and enjoying life with her husband and two dogs. lindsay_foran01@hotmail.com

Tips for transitioning into a small living space By Marie Potter

MORE ADVICE ONLINE ypnexthome.ca/news/advice

WITH REAL ESTATE PRICES rising, families are getting creative and moving into smaller spaces closer to the core. Apartments were once seen as a place for the young, or those who couldn’t buy, but now it’s a welcome and affordable lifestyle choice and more people are opting for urban convenience, smaller spaces they can call “home.” Going compact can be daunting for some, says Marie Potter, marketing director for Professional Organizers in Canada. “One way to approach small space living is to enjoy the benefits. Simply put, less space means less things, less mess, less stress and more time.”

Tips to transition into a compact home: Office If you need a home office (or, at least, a workspace) it’s essential to have a filing system versus a piling system. Invest in a decent, compact filing cabinet on wheels that tucks under the desk. You’ll have every file at your fingertips if you set it up with hanging file folders and tabs in alphabetical order. If you don’t have a desk, use floating shelves and magazine holders, or a wall organizer to manage papers vertically. Stack and label clear bins with supplies on a shelf. Kitchen Maintain small quantities of food 30

YPNEXTHOME.CA

and only have what you need. Free up counter space with hanging baskets that hold fruit or other kitchen essentials. In very small spaces, install a wall-mounted table that folds down when you need it, and folds up and away when the meal is over. Open shelves will create the illusion of more space. Also consider items on wheels – they are easier to move around if necessary.

Living space It’s best to keep things light and airy. Use limited colour palettes, plain white or mirrors to create the illusion of space. Seek multi-purpose furniture such as an ottoman which can be used as an all-in-one foot rest, table and storage unit. Bathroom Hang a clear shower curtain or use a clear liner with mesh pockets behind

Bonus tips Watch ‘Tiny Houses’ and read ‘Everything that Remains’ by minimalists Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. Also consider re-evaluating how you shop by skipping big bulk stores like Costco altogether. Remember, your apartment is a reminder that the most important things in life aren’t things!

it to store your bathroom necessities. Install a towel rack at the back of the tub, like you see in hotels. Have plenty of hooks to keep clothes off the floor. Stack clear, labelled bins under the sink for added storage. Bedroom Condo beds are all the rage for good reason: the mattress platform lifts up using pressurized pistons, so you can store and easily access belongings

inside it. Otherwise, use under-thebed bins for seasonal storage. Only have one set of sheets and towels, and just stay on top of laundry. Overthe-door hooks and a shoe organizer are a must. Thin design flock hangers create 30 per cent more space than plastic or wood hangers. If the bedroom is really tiny consider using curtains instead of bi-fold closet doors, or simply remove the closet doors for an open-concept closet.

Trending | MOVING

How to avoid your own moving horror story By Wayne Karl

MORE ADVICE ONLINE ypnexthome.ca/news/advice

WHEN MOVING, you will likely need a mover. People often don’t consider a mover beyond simply finding someone available and booking. However, given the critical role they perform – taking possession, at least temporarily, of all your worldly goods and moving them without loss or damage – it’s a function not to be taken for granted. Not doing your due diligence and taking the time to select a reputable mover can invite untold problems. Case in point: the following example is all too common. So is the lesson learned – unfortunately, the hard way. I contracted a “professional” moving company to carry out a last-minute move of five pieces of furniture on behalf of my son, a university student. For a variety of reasons, we decided to hire movers rather than rent a truck. After calling several firms – including large, well-known companies and smaller, independent ones. We confirmed the place of pick-up, and drop-off. We agreed on a price ($350) and time (9 a.m.) – after I was very clear the move would involve an out-oftown destination. All the details were confirmed in a “contract” exchanged via email. The crew was on time for the move the next morning, but almost immediately began talking about 36

a higher rate – $360. Not a huge difference, but it immediately raised my suspicions. I’ll spare you all the gory details, but it’s important to share the lowlights of what happened next: » The company I originally contracted the job to the night before was inexplicably unavailable to actually do the move the next morning, and apparently passed it off to another firm. » My original contact, who was easily available on cell phone repeatedly the night before, suddenly was nowhere to be found. » Once the truck was loaded, the fee increased to $450. » Upon arrival at our destination, the movers said the fee was now $500. “It’s taking longer than we thought, and the furniture is heavier,” they said. » “Sure,” I replied, “right after I call the police.” With that, the sordid tale ended. The job not complete, left for us to move the furniture indoors, now the victims of one of the top 10 scams monitored by the Better Business Bureau (BBB). “I could write a thesis on this,” John Levi, president of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) told me. CAM offers consumers the following tips on how to avoid being scammed by unscrupulous movers: » Find reputable movers through the CAM, BBB or provincial government consumer protection agencies » Ask three movers for estimates in writing » Get the terms and conditions in writing » Ensure your goods will be protected for loss or damage » Read customer reviews on movers’ websites and other forums

“It’s far simpler and more effective to engage a reputable mover in advance rather than trying to fix a bad situation after-the-fact.” “Consumers have recourse with their provincial government’s consumer affairs department and with the BBB,” says Levi. “Both of these avenues are fraught with difficulties and often take many months to come to some form of resolution – satisfactory or otherwise. And often, the mover simply out-waits the consumer. “It’s far simpler and more effective to engage a reputable mover in advance rather than trying to fix a bad situation after-the-fact.” My example, though painful and infuriating, is minor compared to other common horror stories involving similarly unsuspecting clients. Make sure you take the proper steps – and the time – to protect yourself. Wayne Karl is an award-winning writer and editor with experience in real estate and business. HOW TO TREAT

mom!

By Jo Alcorn

Every year we celebrate mothers – and rightly so! I grew up with an amazing mom and look forward to honouring her on Mother’s Day. Here are my top picks for moms everywhere. Another great option for moms is the new Philips Airfryer. It fries, bakes, roasts and grills with little to no oil, making it a perfect solution for fast, tasty and healthy meals and snacks for the entire family.

Is your mom a superstar in the kitchen? Surprise her with a gift that will feed her culinary passion. The KitchenAid Artisan Mini Stand Mixer is sure to delight. It has a hub of attachments like the popular Spiralizer, for Mom to reinvent classic meals into healthier recipes using fresh fruits and vegetables.

I am in love with the idea of the new FIZZI sparkling water maker by SodaStream. The system allows you to transform tap water into sparkling water at home, at the touch of a button, without electricity. Whether your mom is looking to fizz up her water or enjoy a cocktail, the FIZZI will look perfect on her countertop. I also love that it’s great for the environment as you aren’t using cans or bottles – you can simply use a gorgeous wine glass or glass from home!

Why not get your mom all the items needed for a barista bar in her own home?
