“There’s nothing like riding because it puts you so close to nature,” says Roger. “Whether you are out in the wind, the rain or on a sunny day, there is nothing that beats the sensation and freedom you get from riding.” Every year, these two avid HarleyDavidson® riders plan numerous day and week-long trips. “We even rented bikes for two weeks while we were in Ireland,” says Cynthia, who adds she loves the sights and sounds you only get to experience up close on a motorcycle. The couple has been buying motorcycles from Kane’s Harley-Davidson® Calgary for nearly as many decades as Roger’s been riding. “I have many options as to where I choose to purchase motorcycles but Kane’s offers superior products and stellar service. Kurmak Builders renovations

ADD A MODERN TWIST TO OUTDATED HOMES by MICHELLE HOPKINS

W

hen Morgan and Cortney Bint saw a 1976 Craftsman-style home, they knew it would need renovations. The fact that the house was in a sought-after, established neighbourhood sealed the deal for the couple.

To earn the trust of a repeat customer is a privilege we don’t take for granted,” says the seasoned veteran. At Kurmak feedback is crucial and always

Three years ago, after interviewing four different renovators, the couple chose Kurmak to modernize their dated bungalow. “After we met with Frank and his team we felt at ease,” says Greg. “Frank was the only one to tell us honestly what could and couldn’t be done… he told us what the roadblocks would be if we stayed with our original plans… his honesty sold us.” Dora agrees and adds: “He did a great job that we recently hired Kurmak to renovate our bathrooms upstairs.” Dora is thrilled with her spa-inspired ensuite and its steam shower and double sinks. “There are so many renovators out there that it can be hard to know who to trust,” adds both. “Not only are Frank, his team and trade partners trustworthy, they do excellent work in a timely manner.” [12] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

CITYLIVING

The scoop on

MARDA LOOP by KAIT KUCY Photos courtesy of 4TH STREET BRZ

LOCATED IN THE SW QUADRANT OF CALGARY, MARDA LOOP IS A VIBRANT AND BUSTLING PART OF THE CITY. WITH A THRIVING RESTAURANT AND RETAIL SCENE THERE ARE SOME SERIOUS FOODIES AND SHOPPERS THAT FREQUENT THE AREA. YOU CAN LIVE IN THE AREA AND HARDLY EVER LEAVE THANKS TO ALL OF THE AMENITIES NEARBY SUCH AS THE SOUTH CALGARY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION. THIS NEIGHBOURHOOD IS BEAUTIFUL WITH LOCAL PARKS AND GARDENS – RESIDENTS ALSO REALLY TAKE CARE OF THEIR PROPERTIES AND YOU CAN WITNESS THIS AS YOU WALK THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY. THERE ARE PLENTY OF MAINSTAYS THAT HAVE LONG SINCE BEEN IN THE AREA THAT TRULY MAKE MARDA LOOP ONE OF A KIND SUCH AS CASABLANCA VIDEO AND ORIGINAL JOE’S.

[14] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

Marda Loop is a hip, young and trendy neighbourhood that is a very sought out area for people from all over Calgary. There is definitely a big foodie trend in this community with incredible restaurants that always bring out a big following. Despite it being a bustling neighbourhood, Marda Loop settles down in the evenings and is quite a calm and quiet area. If you love a party atmosphere just wait for Marda Gras in the summer – the neighbourhood is transformed into a giant street festival party.

Marda Loop is filled with young families, established homeowners and students. An active community, residents enjoy time outdoors and can acces a great assortment of local shops and businesses. The South Calgary Community Association definitely has some incredible winter amenities residents take a particular liking to it during the summer with lots of outdoor activities from swimming to a community garden.

Marda Loop’s bustling lifestyle is definitely the place to enjoy the finer things in life. With ample alluring spots to eat and watering holes a-plenty, foodies definitely flock to this great neighbourhood.

LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015 [15]

The Marda Loop area is definitely above average regarding the rental and real estate markets. Despite the area being filled with higher end restaurants, there are still some affordable options for residents to eat out and entertain themselves. Since this is an area going through a bigger transition, the financial picture is also going through a big transition too. Marda Loop is primarily a car area due to it being a bit further out from the core. While there are reliable city buses frequenting the neighbourhood, the easiest way to get around is by vehicle, though this is also a very walkable neighbourhood and is filled with local residents sharing the streets and parks. Marda Loop is located near to Crowchild Trail as well as 14th Street SW, making the rest of the city quite accessible. One of the best things about living in the Marda Loop area is its close access to the rest of Calgary. It is only minutes away from popular 17th Avenue SW, and bordering onto Crowchild Trail it will take residents closer into the core or into SW Calgary. Marda Loop is a beautiful older neighbourhood filled with both heritage homes and new infills. This is a great neighbourhood for families as there is an incredible amount of recreational activities and parks. The downside is that the area is getting increasingly expensive, it has pushed out some families who cannot afford to live in this neighbourhood anymore.

A stunning renovation built on excellence in craftsmanship with no detail overlooked. Experience the difference that Paragon’s commitment to honesty, openness and transparency can make in getting you there.

403-701-7660

marc@paragonrenovations.ca [16] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

Marda Loop area is partly joined by Garrison Woods and Garrison Green, a newer community built in 2004 that has boosted the neighbourhood with many condos and townhouses. Thanks to this influx of properties, the area has grown to house many residents not only families but singles, retirees and Mount Royal University students. This high demand area has a lot to offer!

COVERSTORY

WHAT IS LUXURY?

C: Luxury to me encompasses all the elements of life that aren’t absolutely necessary but without which life would be less charmed, less beautiful and not nearly as fun! HOW DO YOU INFUSE LUXURY INTO YOUR DESIGN?

C: My goal is to tailor a space to the personal needs and preferences of the client, so great attention is paid to detail and creating unique, often custom, design solutions. Beauty and comfort hold court equally with convenience, function and flexibility. Luxurious design like this creates rooms that you simply love to live in! WHAT ARE THE TRENDS FOR LUXURY TEXTILES AND MATERIALS THIS YEAR?

C: Technology is having a profound effect on what the future holds in the world of luxury textiles and, as a designer, it’s exciting! New fabrication techniques are pushing the interplay of weave and texture, creating truly unique, hand-crafted looks. Lovely fabrics are being kicked into the luxe stratosphere with the latest computerized and digital printing techniques. Look for abstracted landscapes and interesting painterly takes on classic patterns rendered in metallic, pearl or dimensional yarns. When it comes to luxurious materials, the trend is towards contrast and a mix of unique finishes to create a distinctive, one-of-a-kind look. Think juxtapositions of walnut and antique brass with exotic finishes like aged vellum and shagreen – ebony and metallic gold finishes made even more special with hand painted embellishment. All finishes and [22] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

materials that are reflected my latest furniture collection. FAVOURITE PATTERNS – I KNOW YOU HAVE A TEXTILE AND WALLPAPER LINE.

C: My pattern inspiration comes from the classics – damasks, paisleys and architectural motifs. I also gravitate towards nature-inspired motifs, textures and palettes. The fun and challenge comes in reinventing patterns, and making them very current and ‘today’ through modern styling, constructions and materials. For example, my wallpaper collection for York features metallic and pearlescent inks, glass beads and glitter-infused sand – its reaction with light is magic!

5

TOP

WHAT ARE THE LUXURIES YOU ‘CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT’?

C: Great food, wine and beautifully planned and designed lighting – not necessarily in that order! WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED LUXURY ITEM?

C: Time! If I can find any of this ‘luxury’ item, I love to indulge in our steam shower! It has heated marble walls and benches and it just dreamy. After a long stressful day, I come out feeling like a freshly poached new person. LEATHER OR UPHOLSTERY?

C: Upholstery. As it is, there are so many more opportunities to create a statement with colour, pattern, texture – or a combination of all.

SUBTLE DESIGN FEATURES

THAT MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

1. An accent wall in a rich saturated color or

bold wallpaper pattern creates instant focus in a room.

2. Adding mirror to the backs of cabinets creates

depth, dimension and also catches and reflects light into a space.

3. In large open concept rooms the ceiling is

an expansive blank canvas. Simple applied

moldings can bring interest and personality to an area that’s often overlooked. 4. Make big screen TVs less of a big black box

by backing them with black.

5. Installing a beautiful chandelier animates the

large volume of space between the walls and above the furniture. It can instantly update or change the character of the space.

LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015 [23]

Mirrors add depth and space. Chandeliers animate the large volume of space between walls and above furniture.

GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE OR PEWTER?

C: We developed a silver finish with gold undertones that marries perfectly with any finish you put it with. It’s called Glint (we were going to call it ‘Gliver’ but thought it sounded sickly!) and you’ll see it in everything from Candice Olson furniture to wallpaper. MODERN OR TRADITIONAL?

C: My designs have their soul in the classics but are reinterpreted with a fresh modern attitude. The look? Current yet timeless. SUMMER OR WINTER?

C: I grew up in Calgary and love skiing – we’ve skied all over the world and I think nothing beats Banff and Lake Louise. That said, if I can’t ski on it, I don’t want to see it. I’m a sun-loving, beach bunny at heart, so definitely summer. CONDO OR HOUSE?

C: We are ‘schleppers’... briefcases, sample bags, last minute groceries, hockey and ski gear. Our lives would never function with an elevator!

[24] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

6LUXURY

TOP

ITEMS

1. A wireless home automation system to control A/V equipment, lights, temperature, alarms with the touch of a button whether it’s from you sofa or from halfway around the world. It brings out the James Bond in clients. 2. Luxury kitchens elevate cooking to performance art. 3. Heated stone, marble or tile floors, particularly in the bathroom or kitchen. Your bare feet will kiss the ground they walk on. 4. If you are parents of young/active children like us, a ‘big basement bunker’ where kids can go bonkers is a luxury (and sanity saver!) - especially on those deathly cold winter days. 5. A vanishing TV mirror, so that you aren’t left with a big black hole when the TV isn’t on. 6. Nothing says luxury (and romance) in the bedroom more than a fireplace.

OUTDOORS

NEW AND EXCITING FOR YOUR

Outdoor Escapes by BONNY DANN, ESCAPES INC.

S

pring is a very exciting season with all the dormant plant material coming to life once again. As little green shoots appear, the leaf buds start unfolding and the owering ornamental trees burst into their beautiful displays of colour, most of us turn our attention to our outdoor living spaces and getting ready for our short but beautiful season outdoors. As well as nature beautifying our surroundings, we have had the designers and plant breeders creating all kinds of exciting new plant material, new products for hardscape and new styles and colours in outdoor furnishings! [38] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

On the hardscaping side, there are so many exciting new products and colours to enhance your outdoor spaces. We have traditionally always inlaid flagstone in lawns to create walkways, but in recent years most of the precast manufacturers have been creating slabs that give a contemporary or more formal look to your gardens. The slabs are heavy and need to be set on a proper base, so you probably want to call a professional to do those. They are available in either squares or rectangles. At Escapes we have also created rectangular or square stepping stones using pavers to match your patio. These need to be set in an edging material with a base under the entire walkway and filled with a polymeric sand. If you are not using natural stone for your garden walls and patios, on the precast side we have access to pavers and wall blocks in many sizes, shapes and colours. Some of the pavers are now designed with a sleek, smooth finish, and are long and narrow – such as Barkman Boardwalk – giving a contemporary modern feel to your gardens. Others look like real limestone and travertine, which we can not use here, but have durability similar to a Roman or Holland paver. The limestone and travertine are both by Barkman and come in several different sizes and shapes depending on the style of your outdoor spaces. For small retaining walls the blocks are available in a wide range of size, colour and texture depending on whether you want a more traditional look or a sleek more modern look. On the softscape side at Escapes we have been thrilled with the Hydrangea ‘Quick Fire’ and now we have ‘Little Quick Fire’! Like its parents, ‘Little Quick Fire’ extends the blooming season with flowers that open in white and transform to pink-red as summer progresses. I find the blooms on ‘Quick Fire’ still attractive as summer winds down and they turn a tan colour and linger through fall, giving us three seasons of interest and perhaps ‘Little Quick Fire’ will be the same. ‘Strawberry Sundae’ Hydrangea is a smaller version of ‘Vanilla Strawberry’ bred from Pee-Gee but is a rich strawberry pink colour.

Now to contrast with ‘Glow Girl’ we have ‘Blue Kazoo’ with cool blue foliage with hints of burgundy in the new growth that develops into a rich red autumn colour. ‘Blue Kazoo’ is very distinct with its neatmounded habit and has white blooms.

[40] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

Some of our other picks are from the Ninebark family, a hardy shrub that is very popular in Calgary. All three of the new varieties are in the three-ft. range, which we so need. ‘Summer Wine’, an old variety has always been a favourite of mine for its foliage colour, but it is relatively large and therefore sometimes difficult to use, so I am really excited about ‘Tiny Wine’ with its dark leaves and white flowers. ‘Tiny Wine’ will contrast beautifully with ‘Sunny Outlook’ with its clear chartreuse leaves, which literally glow in the garden and its white blooms. ‘Maroon Sunset’, as its name suggests, has rich, burgundy-red foliage and white blooms. It is a breeding breakthrough with a unique compact habit. I was delighted with ‘Glow Girl’ Spirea which is very compact and rounded, without pruning. It has bright yellow new foliage maturing to yellow-green and then turning a fantastic orange/red in the fall and white blooms when it came out a few years ago. Now, to contrast with ‘Glow Girl,’ we have ‘Blue Kazoo’ with cool blue foliage with hints of burgundy in the new growth that develops into a rich red autumn colour. ‘Blue Kazoo’ is very distinct with its neatmounded habit and has white blooms. There are also a few new varieties of Dogwoods available which are hardy, reliable shrubs for our climate. ‘Baton Rouge’ has a compact habit and offers four season interest, in the spring its red stems leaf out, followed by small white flowers and berries in the summer. In the fall the leaves take on a purple-pink tone, and in the winter bright red stems! ‘Little Rebel’ Dogwood shares the seasonal interest, has a compact round habit and does well in partial shade. ‘Neon

Burst’ has the red stems, but bright golden foliage that retains its colour throughout the summer and has excellent fall colour. I am really hoping for new top-grafted dwarf trees in both standard and weeping form. Last year we were able to get ‘Royal Gem’, an ornamental crab, covered in pinkishred blooms before the leaves, which also opened a maroon colour and then turned dark green. In keeping with my four seasons theory for fall and winter interest, it is covered in small red fruit. It is a stunning small tree! A couple of years ago, for one season only, I was able to get top-grafted weeping Lilacs. I have one in my garden. The foliage is dense with small glossy leaves and, when in bloom, the Lilac flowers look like Wisteria as they are hanging upside down. It is incredibly beautiful. I am so grateful for all the new products and plants that are available to us again this season!

ONE COUPLE’S 1970s HOME GETS A LUXURIOUS UPDATE COMPLETE WITH CUSTOMIZED DETAILS BY ELIZABETH METCALFE EDITED BY SARA DUCK PHOTOS COURTESY OF MIKE CHAJECKI

WHEN NEWLYWEDS FLAVIO AND SANDRA CONTACTED ME TO DISCUSS THEIR

extensive plans for their home renovation project, I knew it was going to be a challenge to transform a very tired, 1970s home situated on a lovely wooded lot into something truly spectacular. I wanted the couple to be inspired rather than intimidated by the creative process of design. Luckily, the clients were open to ideas and had faith and trust that together, we would work as a team to create a beautiful family home. They had the vision to see beyond the orange and lime green colour scheme, shag carpeting, chipped laminate countertops and pink bathroom fixtures. Nothing could be saved, a total gut was the only option. [44] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

Like a puzzle, good design requires assembling many diverse elements to form a cohesive plan, and every design decision must contribute to the wholeness of the space Now we had the freedom to re-invent and update their floorplan to create a home that would not only feel new, but also be functional for a young family, and ultimately be beautiful and luxurious for our clients with very upscale tastes and expectations. At just over 2,500 sq. ft., with standard eight-ft. ceilings, we needed to consider every design detail to completely transform this shell into a stunning custom home. At the beginning of a project, it is valuable to have a well-defined design vision to keep you on track, but still be open enough to evolve as you become immersed in the design process. We knew that a well-thought out floorplan was the key to getting them off to a great start. Once the home was gutted and the walls were down, the clients could see their vision start to take shape. The new plan opened up the original, dated floorplan to let light flood through. The kitchen became the hub of the first floor, with an expansive arched opening into the dining room and a clear view into the family room. There are solid reasons that a room ‘feels’ right. Whether we are aware of it or not, good design sends a message that makes us feel relaxed, comfortable, safe and calm. Like a puzzle, good design requires assembling many diverse elements to form a cohesive plan, and every design decision must contribute to the wholeness of the space.

Luxurious and unexpected details make this a beautiful kitchen from every angle. Small leaded-glass windows were added to the backsplash and framed with soft veined Calcutta marble slabs that look both traditional and current. A dedicated, customized baking zone for Sandra, our petite homeowner, with a lowered height countertop, thick marble shelves and library wall sconces is unique and functional. Flavio was thrilled when he discovered an antique solid slab of walnut that we used for the peninsula – great for a well-used breakfast bar. A paneled fridge, stainless farmhouse apron sink, a library light over the window and wonderful, polished nickel lights, completed the picture. From the outset, Flavio and Sandra knew this had to be a home to entertain their large extended family, our goal was to use every inch of space. It was imperative that the dining

LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015 [45]

Tips for getting the

LUXE LOOK AT-HOME Great trim Invest in substantial baseboards, window and door casings, and panel mouldings. Don’t skimp on size or quality. Don’t use quarter round at the base of your baseboard, but opt for a shoe mould or door stop. Add a back-band to your door and window casing. Make sure your crown moulding is large enough and installed correctly. Use solid doors instead of hollow core doors whenever possible. Wonderful lighting Layer your lighting. Recessed pot lights have their place, but don’t forget to add wall sconces, floor lamps, table lamps and picture lights. Make sure all lights are on dimmers to create the right atmosphere. Do not be tempted to flood your home with a runway of pot lights – it looks too commercial and is very boring. Beautiful fabrics Mohair, cashmere, silk velvet, laundered linen, bamboo silk, wool and taffeta silk are the ultimate luxury to add to your home. We might not all be able to have a silk velvet headboard or a mohair sofa, but most of us can afford to have a luxurious toss cushion or two. Beautiful fabrics can be expensive, but they are one of the easiest ways to add luxury to your life, and they’re worth every penny of investment. Think natural fibres, which are generally more tactile, and have their own patina which makes them unique.

Great books I love design books! Some of my favourite are by Vincent Wolf, Barbary Barry, Suzanne Kasler, Mary MacDonald, Aerin Launder, Eric Kohler, Daryl Carter, Jan Showers, Kelly Wearstler, Kelly Hoppen, Thomas Pheasant and John Saladino. There are gorgeous books that will help you train your eye to great design. Keep them out for inspiration – they make a wonderful accessory too.

[46] LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2015

room felt welcoming and accessible, not tucked away in a room saved for occasional holidays. The long, custom dining table is large enough to accommodate 12, and the ivory faux-leather upholstery makes it easy to clean up spills. A beverage fridge is hidden away behind one of the doors, and a mirrored panel bounces light from the windows. By combining a bench and chairs, the dining room feels more casual, less formal and structured. Even the small living room is comfortably large enough for entertaining guests. We maximized the seating capacity with a long window seat, two loveseats and chairs. A hand-knotted silk and wool area rug looks and feels very luxurious. Framed Cole & Son wallpaper panels by Italian artist Fornasetti, and two identical loveseats create a symmetrical arrangement that visually makes the space feel larger. The glass and mirrored cocktail table is important to keep the space feeling open and uncluttered. We kept the room light with a watery palette of soft blues and greys offset with a warmer yellow highlight. The family room’s fireplace was kept in its original location, but refaced with a veined Algonquin marble. An upholstered ottoman, wool area rug and velvet upholstery make this room beautiful and practical for the whole family. A series of paneled doors hide a perfectly designed pantry space and the staircase to the lower level. Together, our hard work has resulted in a home that is visually lovely, and most importantly, easily functional for raising their young family and entertaining their friends. Luxury should take your breath away. It should make you smile. When it comes to interior design, luxury is all about thoughtful design executed to a high level of quality. It’s editing down and removing excess to allow the visual beauty and simplicity of a design to reveal itself.

RENOVATORQ&A

10 Questions

with Vaughan Wallace by HEATHER RYAN

V

aughan Wallace, one of the managing partners of Wallace Fleming Design & Renovate, is a project manager whose passion for renovations and construction prompted him to start the business 10 years ago. Wallace Fleming is dedicated to managing renovation projects effectively, and provides top quality fit and finish that consistently meets and exceeds their clients’ expectations.

1) What do you love most about Calgary? Aside from the fact it’s where I met my wife and where my kids were born, I have to say it’s the proximity to the mountains. I love mountain biking, and Calgary has some of the best riding trails in North America – right in our back yard. I also love the entrepreneurship that is so alive in Calgary, and the friendly people. 2) Tell us a little about Wallace Fleming Design & Renovate. We’re a licensed, bonded and insured, full-service renovator providing interior and exterior home and commercial renovations in Calgary and the surrounding region. We can manage any project big or small. We take care of all the details from beginning to end, ensuring it’s completed on time and on budget. We’re constantly working to meet the needs and expectations of our clients and provide a service that is second to none. 3) Tell us about one of the your more satisfying reno projects. We recently completed a 500-sq.-ft. addition in combination with a main floor renovation to an inner-city home. It dramatically improved the space and took a small, cramped living area and turned it into a spacious, modern home that the client loved! It was designed around living and the owners had a very defined idea of what they wanted. We were pleased that, at the end of the day, we met their expectations with respect to their vision, and that’s important. 4) What feature do people want most in their luxury home? For most of our clients, elements such as stone feature walls and custom-built entertainment centres are popular. Recently, we have received requests for climate-controlled wine cellars and display rooms. In kitchens, huge granite or high-end quartz islands and exotic finishings like leathering are popular – and in a big luxurious space it can be impressive.

WE’RE CONSTANTLY WORKING TO MEET THE NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS OF OUR CLIENTS AND PROVIDE A SERVICE THAT IS SECOND TO NONE. 5) What’s the most unique item/feature that you have ever put in a renovation? We recently finished a fully sound-proofed basement bedroom for a very busy Calgary doctor who requires a good ‘days’ sleep. 6) Based on your experience, what area in the home do people most prefer to renovate, and why? Would have to be the kitchen. While kitchens have always been the central gathering place in homes, they have become more living spaces due to open-concept designs and the fact that many homes are designed around the kitchen. Kitchens have become the centre of the home; everything happens there. It’s not just a place to cook anymore… life revolves around the kitchen island. 7) Is there any advice you give people looking to renovate? Plan, plan and plan some more. Also, be realistic about what you need versus what you want, and the associated costs. Selecting a qualified contractor is as important as all of the above. There are good contractors out there – and some not so good – so make sure you do your homework and make an informed decision. 8) On the lighter side: book or a movie? Book. I’m all over non-fiction and love learning about anything I know little to nothing about. 9) What’s your favourite sport to watch? Cross-country or downhill mountain biking when I can find it on TV! It’s close to my heart. 10) Where’s your favourite vacation spot? Hands down, New York City! I love the smell and the vibe of New York City… I’ve been there quite a few times and New York has a unique smell – and when you’re down in Manhattan you can’t help but love the vibe and the energy… it’s a fantastic place to visit.
