A variation on a theme

W

e all want to bring more of that outdoor feel into our interior spaces. Who doesn’t enjoy being surrounded by natural elements? If you can’t live in the middle of nature, let’s bring a little nature into your home.

Natural elements Textural design is all about creating tactile moments that invite touch, drawing all the viewer’s physical and emotional attention to the space, an experience that can help with mental health and rejuvenation. When working with textures, consider placement, such as putting a smooth texture directly next to a rough one. This will enhance the contrast 52

between them more than if you space them apart. And don’t be afraid to mix metals, finishes and textures. Since not everyone has the opportunity to overhaul a full space, if you are looking to add natural textural elements to a smaller space, bring in plants and layer in flowers and add woods that contrast to a natural material flooring such as walnut, and possible deeper tones. It’s okay to mix light and dark woods that have different grains, such as oak and walnut. Layering in blacks, matte texture, vibrant walnut woods, concrete textured manufactured stone countertops and mixing a colour such as “Hale Navy” would add texture. Matte finishes are a must in any space to ensure that the warm feel of layering through natural textures such as low-sheet veneered woods,

When travelling, we are drawn to the outdoors, possibly a favourite beach, hike or viewpoint, and find ourselves drawn to those exotic and unique natural materials, native fibres and metals. Take note of these when you’re at your favourite spot so you can replicate them in some way at home. It might be by adding a textile on a chair such as a throw blanket or pillow. Or, it might be that harvest table at a local breakfast spot that you loved and can introduce as a charcuterie board to your kitchen as a reminder of that table’s aged and unique lived-in finish.
