Villas and gardens of Italy’s Lake Como

A Walker’s World has a new centre-based walk in Italy’s Lake Como region.

Just an hour from Milan, Lake Como offers a network of trails and ancient mule tracks, leading from pretty villages to lavish villas and magnificent gardens.

The seven-day, six-night walk features ‘must see’ villas and gardens such as Villa Carlotta, Villa Balbaniello, Villa Melzi and Villa Monastero.

Wild success leads to more walking tours

Tranzit Tours will release two more guided walking tours in 2020 after demand for its inaugural Wild Walking Tour exceeded expectations.

The bus and tourism company, which operates nationally but has its head office in Masterton, typically offers 30 guided tours around New Zealand each year that range in length from two to 10 days.

After listening to feedback from customers it launched a nine-day guided walking tour to some of the South Island’s top destinations including Arthur’s Pass National Park, Lake Matheson and the Routeburn, Milford and Kepler Tracks.

The tour sold out in three days, so now Tranzit is launching two more walking tours for 2020 – one based at the top of the South Island and the other around the central North Island.

Tranzit Tours manager Robin Corbett says the new walking tours complement the company’s other itineraries available in 2020 and are aimed at the more active senior. ‘We were surprised how fast our inaugural Wild Walking Tour sold out and there was just so much interest from our customers that we are working hard to create two more guided walking adventures next year, she said.

Explore Irelands’ Wild Atlantic Way

Beyond the Glass is offering an eight-day Explorer Tour to discover Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Guests can hike off the beaten track and cycle along spectacular coastlines and landscapes.

The itinerary visits Blarney Castle, Dingle, the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands.

This small escorted group tour has a maximum of 12 people, travelling in comfort on a tour bus and staying in boutique accommodation.

Tour dates in 2020 are 22 to 29 June, 20 to 27 July and 24 to 31 August and costs €1700 per person sharing, €315 single supplement. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

A new bridge, replacing the 30-year old bridge, is now open on the popular Te Henga Walkway, the clifftop walk from Bethells Beach (Te Henga) to the south of Muriwai Beach on Auckland’s wild west coast.

Plans for the replacement bridge had been in the pipeline after a number of heavy rain events caused sustained damage to the old bridge and led to it finally giving way after a severe rainfall on Boxing Day 2018.

In the meantime, walkers were only able to access the walkway at low tide and in fine weather via Bethells and O’Neill beaches.

“It’s really great to see this new bridge completed and to offer visitors easy access to the stunning walkway. It is truly a little gem offering spectacular views of the rugged west coast of Tamaki Makaurau,” says Stefan Sebregts, DOC Senior Ranger.

Easy biking from from Innsbruck to Venice

Cycling Europe has a new 10-day self-guided cycle tour between Austria and the shores of the Adriatic.

Starting from the Austrian border at Brennero Pass, the continuous journey is downhill through ancient villages and the meadows of South Tyrol. It follows the Adige River to Lake Garda.

‘A highlight is Verona, the town of Romeo and Juliet, with its impressive Roman arena, and then Vicenza, renowned for the classical Palladio architecture,’ says Cycling Europe’s Jill Grant. ‘Next is beautiful Padova, cradle of arts, which is reached via the Euganean Hills’ thermal district, the largest in Europe.’ The around 400km journey ends in Venice.

‘Although the backdrop for this tour is towering alpine scenery which gives way to lakes and the wine region of Soave, it is surprisingly graded as easy cycling as much of it is on dedicated cycle paths with only a few short climbs,’ explains Grant. ‘Some days can be shortened using trains.’

The cost is from $1730 per person with mid and high season surcharges.

Luggage is moved between each hotel and a ferry cruise on Lake Garda, cycling notes and route maps, a local contact and accommodation in three and four-star hotels are included in the package. Electric bikes can be hired.

Family of seven takes on 3,000 km trail

I

f you’re a parent of five children born within five years of each other, you clearly love a challenge.

So what better way to spend four or five months together than to walk the length of New Zealand on a 3,000 km trail featuring some of the world’s most stunning scenery?

The George family, from Melbourne, have just begun walking Te Araroa Trail, which starts at the northernmost point of New Zealand, Cape

Reinga, before winding its way down the country to the bottom of the South Island in Bluff.

Parents Daniel and Kelly, both nurses, are accompanying Gabrielle (15), twins Holli and Asha (14), Rex (13) and Forrest (10) as they travel the length of New Zealand with tramping packs on their backs.

Incredibly, the George septet had never done an overnight hike before taking on the epic adventure. Nor

are not the youngest family to take on Te Araroa. That distinction belongs to the Rapseys of Dunedin, who a year ago made the journey with parents Chris and Jorinde, along with nine-year-old Elizabeth and six-yearold Jonathan.

Regardless, the daring and fortitude of the Georges is no less remarkable as they take on a challenge that was concocted by twins Holli and Asha during a recent road trip around Europe.

Mum Kelly was keen, but dad Daniel wasn’t as convinced, until, as Gabrielle describes, “we made him”.

The George children learned some valuable life lessons during preparation for the trip, using their craft skills to reduce the size of their sleeping bags to fit each family member’s body size, and also in researching pricing to gain the best deal on all their equipment.

The family started their journey at Cape Reinga on November 9 and endured an inauspicious start that blew away any illusions of first-class comforts throughout their travels.

day two when lashed by a storm that threw rain, gale force winds and hail stones at them.

But the Georges are a resilient bunch, and are already pulling together even tighter as a unit as they trade packs and weight to support the younger family members who are still becoming accustomed to the rigours of travelling long distances on foot.

It hasn’t been all doom and gloom for the Georges though, far from it.

They have been treated to the incredible ocean views off Cape Reinga and the vast beauty of Ninety Mile Beach in their first 300 km.

Eldest sister Gabrielle is writing a blog about the journey, detailing the celebrations and the struggles of becoming bored of white sandy beaches, the encouragement and admiration of local well-wishers, record-sized blisters and the potential of forever dreading the sight and smell of peanut butter sandwiches.

“It’s very hard and I’m pretty sore, but I like it,” Gabrielle said of the first 300 km of the journey. “We were a bit overloaded to start with but we’ve cut that down.”

Gabrielle said the group had travelled 28 km in their most productive day but had been generally walking ‘in the low twenties’ (in terms of kilometres) per day.

She said they were in high spirits, apart from the odd ‘tantrum’ when a storm blew in while they were walking along Ninety Mile Beach. Even Forrest, the youngest of the group, was fit and firing on all cylinders.

“Forrest is all smiles and wanting to take more weight out of everyone’s packs to be helpful, but we have to stop him. He’s energetic, usually bouncing off the walls at home,” Gabrielle said.

Her brother Rex had a physical and intellectual disability but he too was doing well and enjoying himself, she said.

And not surprisingly, Gabrielle is backing herself and her fellow dogged family members to finish the whole journey.

“I think we will make it. You never know what will happen but it’s going well so far.”

efforts. To his knowledge, they were the largest family group to walk the trail together all at once.

“It is heart-warming to see a young family getting out there and taking on the challenge, which is the ethos of the Trail. The Georges are certainly a special group of people, and we can’t wait to see their journey play out and hear through reports and Gabrielle’s blog.”

Mr Weatherall was quick to point out that the Trail was not just for those with the time and the energy to take on the full 3,000 km.

Whilst over 1,000 people take on the trek annually, either southbound from Cape Reinga, or northbound from Bluff, there are hundreds of thousands of others who take on individual sections of the Trail, such as the ever-popular Tongariro Crossing in the Central North Island, or the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds.

“Te Araroa is a national resource that is available to everyone, whether they are able to walk 3 km or 3,000 km. We encourage people of all fitness levels, Kiwis and people from around the world, to come and challenge themselves whilst soaking in the unique landscape and beauty that both islands of New Zealand have to offer.”

From their initial itinerary along the upper north-east tip of the North Island, through Auckland, the Georges will then traverse down the middle of the North Island, circumventing Lake Taupo and down towards Cook Strait, before catching the Interislander ferry

from Wellington across to Ship Cove at the top of the South Island.

From there, they head down the middle of the South Island, aiming to arrive at their ultimate destination in Bluff around March or April before heading back to Melbourne to conjure up their next great adventure.

Te Araroa Trail was officially opened in December 2011, and was the brainchild of Geoff Chapple who formed Te Araroa Trust in 1994.

It has been listed as one of the world’s best long walks by both CNN and National Geographic.

My Favourite Walks

Spoilt for choice - in Wellington

F

or a capital city with an everincreasing population, Wellington has an amazing choice of walks, even close to the city.

From my home in the city suburb of Oriental Bay, I can decide on a waterfront wander, east or west; a bush and hillside walk; a climb to the top of Mt Victoria or a stroll along suburban roads with flashes of water between the houses.

Downhill at the seafront I have two choices. Go east and watch the dogs on the beach in winter, the swimmers and sunbathers in high summer and all the variations of weather and people at other times.

My Favourite Walks

The road follows the curve of the beach until it reaches Point Jerningham where I can round the point and walk on to the cosy little curve of Balaena Bay. Here I often see windsurfers skipping across Evans Bay like syncopated butterflies.

If I choose to turn west at the seafront, I pass the whale statue which was donated to the city by its sculptor Colin Webster-Watson.

Further on, I watch the children playing on the jungle-gym where a small boy always seems to be climbing up the slide and colliding with a child sliding down.

Past the Tugboat cafÊ moored in its own little lagoon, I like to drop down from the footpath and walk along the edge of the water past the blue-fronted boatsheds, enjoying the variety of craft in the lagoon and occasionally peering into any boatshed that’s open to see the conglomeration of sailing equip-

My Favourite Walks

Up and past Clyde Quay with its classy restaurant and apartments, I walk towards the city past the statue of a naked man by English sculptor Max Patte.

Called Solace in the Wind, it leans out towards the harbour and is a favorite spot for tourist photos. It was donated to the city 11 years ago by Patte, originally as a parting gift to a

city he had worked in and enjoyed.

But later he found he’d enjoyed it so much that, in fact, he decided to stay.

If I decide to turn uphill from my home instead of downhill, then the whole Town Belt is at my disposal. I walk up a zigzag pathway that leads to the Monastery where I can turn left and later right to reach Charles Plimmer Park and then the variety of tracks in the Town Belt. Here are bushy tracks

that even the sharpest Wellington winds cannot penetrate.

If I take one direction, I look down over Oriental Bay or up into the bush with its half-hidden houses. I then have a choice of tracks leading back down to the beach.

Other tracks can be taken to the top of Mt Victoria (my energy doesn’t stretch to that walk very often these days) or along towards Newtown where I can walk through bush.

me to gaze across towards the Basin Reserve.

For the growing numbers living in apartments, which will increase in future years according to current estimates, these walks and many others near the city are of enormous value.

We are so lucky that, in early days, a Town Belt of trees was reserved to encircle the city. Although a few ‘bites’ were taken out of it occasionally in the past, it is now protected legally and is sancrosant.

The Town Belt and the tracks within it are a precious heritage and must be diligently protected forever.

Tarawera - a legacy to uphold

L

ake Tarawera, including Lake Rotomahana, was where tourism in New Zealand began.

People came from all over the world to visit what was known as the Eighth Wonder of the World, The Pink and White Terraces.

They not only came for the beauty the Terraces beheld, but in those days, many were looking for relief or hopefully a cure from their ailments by bathing in the pools of the Terraces.

Well, that all changed on the 10th of June 1886 with the eruption of Mt Tarawera, an event that lasted only five hours. In doing so it split the mountain open its entire length,

continued through the hydrothermal of Lake Rotomahana with a fissure of more than 17km.

What nature had created over a 1000 years; it had also decimated in the blink of an eye. The Terraces were gone. The eruption was the largest natural disaster to have occurred in the commonwealth up until that time.

Forward 134 years to the present day and Lake Tarawera and the surrounding area has once again become one of the most stunning places of natural beauty in New Zealand.

Tarawera - a legacy to uphold portion on one side of the lake.

The backdrop to Lake Tarawera is still dominated by the awesome presence of Mount Tarawera itself. More correctly Tarawera is made up of three mountains, from the left, Wahanga (the sacred mountain), Ruawahia in the

centre and Tarawera being the righthand side. Up until around 20 years ago people freely walked Tarawera, but this was halted by the Ngati Rangitihi mountain top owners.

In 2013 the Tarawera Trail was opened. This was a first in New Zea-

land as a joint project between DOC and six Maori block owners which the trail now crosses. The trail itself is 15km long starting at the Te Waiora – Tarawera Trail car park 400m south of the Buried Village.

It takes an average of four to five hours to walk to Hot Water Beach for moderate walkers which is the end point of the trail.

There are many highlights along the mostly bush covered walk that make it pretty special, finishing with a soak in the thermal waters at Hot Water Beach after your walk.

There are many beautiful viewing spots of Mt Tarawera and a couple of great beaches for lake swimming or a lunch-stop along the way.

There is the option to camp at the Hot Water Beach DOC campsite at the end of your walk or take the water taxi back including the free shuttle back to your car.

If you decide to camp you can get the water taxi to deliver your gear to save you having to carrying it in. You Above: Walkers on their way to the Tarawera Falls.

One of the lesser known walks at Lake Tarawera, although rated by DOC as one of the best short walks in New Zealand, is the Tarawera Falls walk.

Accessed via Kawereu, after obtaining a permit from the local Kawereu I-site, it allows you to drive the forest road to within 15 minutes of the falls themselves or you can organise a water taxi to drop you off at the Outlet (Te Tapahoro) for the one and a half hour walk to the falls.

The falls are spectacular, but the walk to and from the lake is equally stunning as you follow the river down from Lake Tarawera.

There are three additional waterfalls along the walk, and if you look carefully you will see where the water disappears underground prior to it emerging through a hole in the cliff, that makes up the Tarawera Falls themselves.

There are several other combination walks around Lake Tarawera, one being via Lake Okataina to Humpheries Bay and on to the Outlet, a walk of around five hours.

At an average pace it will take you 3040 minutes to get to the summit but there is plenty to explore and admire along the way – including a cool rock overhang creating a cool cave.

The WTC trampers chose to tramp up and down to the hut. There was also a grumpy lone tramper, perhaps seaking solitude, who had overnighted in the hut and intent on completing her loop via Deadmans plus a lone loop runner of more later. Two trampers went bush bashing.

About half of the MTSC contingent chose to tramp up to the hut with some making a forea into the tussock.

A group of five chose to do a tramp in and out on the Deadmans Track with three lunching at the route marker at the start of the tussock.

It was too chilly to stand on the top ridge but pleasant enough to eat lunch just over on the eastern side. A long tailed cuckoo was heard about 15 minutes above car park on way up Deadmans. This annoying bird, was never seen.

Chris and Dennis had decided they would walk through to the Rangi Hut, but when they got to just above the bridge, Chris remarked he would probably have preferred to walk Deadman’s.

With this in mind they decided to explore an alternative route……..

In Dennis’s own words “This wasn’t upright tramping and was more like crawling on our hands and knees to get through the leather jacket. However we did stumble across a couple of nice clearings on our journey. We were pleased to see an Orange Triangle telling us we had reached Deadman’s Track.”

In summary it was a beautiful sunny 10 degree day, ideal for tramping, warm in the sun out of the breeze. With a nine am start to the tramp all groups were safely out by shortly after three pm. The fast looper group took about six and a half hours the lone young female runner completed the loop in three hours and ten minutes. Oh to be young and so fit!

A

tenth of the distance of Te Araroa, Wainwright’s Coast to Coast in northern England beckoned me when I was planning a Europe visit for work and family reasons.

However, the faithful tent-carrier, aka my husband, wasn’t available as he’d taken on a new IT contract. What

to do? When I suggested the walk to UK friends and family there was lots of interest but just three of us were able to commit a fortnight in late September.

Jeanne, Carol and I had been friends since teenage years but we hadn’t seen each other for five years. How would it work out?

I looked at lots of sample routes.

others savour rest days. I booked YHA hostels, farmhouses, “bunkbarns” and a pub aiming to cover almost 300 km from St Bees on the west coast of Cumbria, through the Lake District to Robin Hood Bay on the Northumbrian east coast in fourteen days.

Some stretches have lots of options for food and accommodation and varying the daily distance but on others, like Patterdale to Shap, there are no choices.

We decided to do the bookings ourselves (easy on the internet) and carry our own gear instead of getting anything transported. Our reasoning was that we needed all the wet weather gear in case every day, plus first aid, hats, gloves and a towel for swimming so if we just took one set of clothes for the evenings, we wouldn’t have too much to carry.

There were many places to eat most days and the hostels and farmhouses usually offered packed lunches. We even came across a few strategically placed honesty boxes, some in churches, one in a summerhouse, with cakes,

chocolate bars and drinks.

I booked beds in mid-July for our late September walk. I’m sure it’s harder in the high season of July and August but only on Saturday nights were a few places already booked.

Neither of my schoolfriends Carol and Jeanne had done more than three or four day walks but they were quite fit as swimmers or runners. This didn’t necessarily translate into finding long days of walking as easy as they’d hoped. However we completed every day except one afternoon when a severe weather warning on the moors necessitated different transport. Despite our missing afternoon, technology concluded we had walked over 350 km in the two weeks.

We posted some extra items as we went along. ”You don’t need three Tshirts.” “I don’t need my sketchbook and journal.” “Why did I bring two pairs of merino leggings?” we said.

We were really glad of hats, gloves and over-trousers on many days – and our togs on other days for a swim in a tarn.

We started with a quick swim in the Atlantic and gathered some lovely pebbles from Fleswick Bay. The Lake District provided fantastic views but some challenges for one member who didn’t like heights.

There were several long days. The longest day of 37 km was fairly flat but frustratingly slow through muddy Above left: Fat Betty.

fields and confusing paths.

I loved the sheer variety overall – surprisingly similar to a miniature Te Araroa with mountains, forests, farms, villages and a little road walking.

We certainly needed our array of maps, compasses, phone apps and a Garmin. We never got lost for long but occasionally the paper maps, the devices and the way-finding signage on the ground all disagreed. Only once did we get to our destination in the dark and that had a benefit: we saw bats.

Lots of wildlife shared the route: farm animals, wild birds, squirrels, deer, frogs and toads, snails and caterpillars, butterflies and bees.

The autumn colours strengthened over the fortnight and the blackberries sustained us although such foraging inevitably slowed us down. Fortunately we were all interested in plants, fungi, animals and geology – especially on the uphill stretches!

Historic paths, cairns, castles, a ruined abbey and mysterious tumuli proved very interesting.

Along the way several churches had welcoming notices and we sometimes sheltered, observed the stained glass and architecture and bought a flapjack to cheer us up.

We also traversed a range of geological formations from red sandstone cliffs to limestone pavements to drumlins and peat bogs. The Yorkshire moors were quite wild, intensified with mists and driving rain at times.

One half expected Wuthering Heights to loom out of the distance.

The Yorkshire dales and moors were charming but very wet and along the Swale we thought the path might soon disappear under the flooding river.

Unlike Te Araroa, every river had a bridge or stepping stones.

Each night we ate well. The plum crumble at Shap’s New Ing Farm and the cooked breakfast at Intake Farm stood out.

Oh yes, the strawberry and cream doughnuts in Gunnerside were pretty good too. It wasn’t the most slimming of walks. Another pleasurable highlight was the hot tub at Keld’s bunkbarn.

We enjoyed a bit of friendly rivalry of course!

So who was Fat Betty? Not the one in Mad Men! She is a wayside cross and boundary marker dating from the 10th or 11th century on the wild moors at the junction of three parishes, resembling a Tibetan statue. Previous walkers had left funny little offerings including chocolate bars which we liberated.

Robin Hood Bay is a charming seaside town on the North Sea coast and we cheerfully threw the little pebbles we’d collected at the beginning into the waves.

The last night we enjoyed a cheerful meal at the gloriously named Boggle Hole youth hostel, anointing our blisters, drinking to the health of our legs and wondering why we hadn’t booked at least one rest day in the whole fourteen days!

Dolomites - king of the alps

N

orthern Italy’s Dolomites has swapped over several times between Italy and Austria over the past couple of centuries.

Identity is a little blurred with most food and tourist attractions having dual Italian and Austrian names.

It does get a bit confusing when you first arrive to start a walking holiday in Niederdorf, also known as Villabassa, and your first day’s walking is from Toblach also known as Dobbiaco.

The whole region has a different ‘feel’ to the rest of Italy with the two nationalities being mixed up together Walkers come to the legendary Dolomites to be amongst the idyllic mountain lakes, alpine villages in lush pastures, cuckoo-clock like shepherd huts, green forests and the stunning jagged peaks.

The Dolomites are a Natural World Heritage site made up of three nature parks.

Highlights are: the whitestone walls of the Seekofel mirrored in Lake Prags’s crystal clear water; the exquisite mountain town of Cortina d’Ampezzo (the Pearl of the Dolomites) gateway to spectacular mountains and summits; then the Cristallo Group of mountain peaks - the Pinnacle on Mount Tofane and the summits around the Fanes Mountains., An excursion to the ‘Drei Zinnen’, also known as ‘Tre Cime’, or in English ‘Three Peaks’ is a must. he island of Niue, only a three hour flight from Auckland is such an interesting place for a walking or biking holiday.

The reef of the former atoll now forms the outer rim of ‘The Rock’ as it is known; with its highest point at 68 metres above sea level, and the lagoon is now the central Plateau.

Walking paths on phosphate. It has high levels of radio activity – usually found in deep sea beds. The east coast is basically sheer cliffs to the ocean, but the west coast has a wave cut rock shelf, between the road and the ocean making fascinating reef walking. A coral reef surrounds the island the only major break being close to Alofi – the capital.

island of Niue with hand rails or ropes and wire mesh on boardwalk to prevent slipping.

They were a mixture of leafy trails through forest, rocks, wooden steps and ramps, and usually through interesting caves, with stalagmites and stalactites.

In the north and on the east coast there are magnificent chasms - quite different from anything we’ve seen before.

Because few people live on Niue, there’s very little traffic, and the speed limit is 40, so it’s easy to bike everywhere.

There are four designated bike tracks, but the inland roads make good cycle tracks too.

We explored 14 sea paths in 10 days.

They were all different and all special.

Our favourites were Avaiki Cave, Matapa Chasm, Talava Arches and Togo Chasm.

The path to Avaiki begins in Makefu Village and begins through broadleaf shrubs, coconut palms, ferns and succulents. It soon leads into a cave with multicoloured limestone formations.

From here steps lead down to the sea. At low tide it is easy to access a large cave with amazingly blue water, and teeming with fish, as though they were caught in a net. This cave is open to the reef. It’s quite incredible, and a snorkeler’s dream.

Not far up the road is a short walk into Limu Pools, a favourite swimming spot, where the water is crystal clear and many shades of blue. Lots of brightly www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

coloured fish can be seen continually moving with the current.

At the north west tip of the island are two amazing spots. Matepa Chasm is a short walk, again through forest and a limestone cave. But that opens to a simply stunning deep blue hole full of fish. It was like swimming in an aquarium. The water changed colour and sparkled as the sun moved.

more rugged track led through dense rain forest and jagged coral, to an enormous cave with coloured stalactites and stalagmites which divided the cave into many sections.

Following a roped path we reached Talava Arch, 8 metres high and 35 metres wide, standing proud on the reef, with one leg in the sea. In front, there is a bright blue sinkhole, more caves and more arches. It’s a magic

The best walk for me was Togo Chasm on the east coast. Starting with a forest of tall broadleaf trees and coconut palms, it soon became a belt of karst landscape with tall coral peaks. Heat from an ancient volcano caused sea water to be drawn up through porous coral, creating weird and wonderful shapes. And then it was all thrust up from the ocean.

We w a n d e r e d t h r o u g h t h i s fascinating landscape on a narrow concrete path for about half an hour, before reaching a long wooden ladder.

Below, was an inland beach with white sand and coconut palms. It was so unexpected and like something out of a movie.

At the base of the ladder was a turquoise pool leading to a cave, and views of surging waves. Back to the top, we walked two minutes to a spectacular lookout point – a blowhole with waves thundering as they crashed high over black rocks, leaving a fringe of running water as they receded.

I could have stayed and watched for hours, but we had another chasm to explore. This one was dark gloomy and very very steep. Once a place to collect drinking water, because rain water seeps down in cracks in the rock, rather than forming streams.

Bay’s highest waterfall

R

ising 58 metres, Shine Falls is Hawke’s Bay’s most spectacular waterfall.

The falls is roughly a 1.5 hours drive away from Napier, and the last 12km is gravel road - but it’s worth the trip!

The Shine Falls track is a 1.5 hour return walk, and leads to the base of the waterfall. The walk passes through farmland and beneath towering sandstone bluffs.

There are some uphill sections on the track as well as stream crossings, but they are all bridged and easy.

Low-land forest includes kanuka, kawakawa, kowhai and titoki.

Getting there From Napier, head north-east on SH2 and follow it for the next 43.5km until you see the ‘Shine Falls’ sign, where you need to turn left into Mata-

horua Road. After 11km turn left into Heays Access Road. Follow this road for 6.5 km until you reach a DOC car park, on your left, with a picnic table (no toilets).

Shine Falls - Hawkes

Kamahi Loop Track to Shine Falls and Heays Access Road

T

he Kamahi Loop Track is another but longer walk taking in Shine Falls in Hawkes Bay. The walk time is five hours one way over a distance of 8.3km.

Starting at the Pohokura Road car park and taking in part of the Tūmanako and Kamahi loops, visitors experience a cross-section of the reserve’s features – including an ancient mataī about 800 years old and birds such as tītitipounamu/rifleman and the reintroduced pītoitoi/North Island robin.

Middle Track, between the midpoint of Kamahi Loop and Shine Falls, may be steep and rough in some sections.

From above Shine Falls, the track descends steeply through stands of rewarewa, crossing Boundary Stream to reach the bottom of the spectacular Shine Falls before continuing to Heays Access Road.

Getting there Boundary Stream Mainland Island is located approximately one hour’s drive north of Napier.

Follow State Highway 2 to Tutira, turn left at Tutira onto Matahorua Road then left onto Pohokura Road.

have just returned from guiding my third edition of the Deserts and Canyonlands of the USA, a magnificent itinerary, one that just keeps on giving.

And each year is never any less wonderful. In fact I keep finding more little gems to add in each time which herald the whole ‘Travel less Ordinary’

and ‘Active Holidays for Active People’ that I use as my mantra.

There is nothing more satisfying than having walkers say ...”surely things cannot get any better than today” and then have them repeat that statement the next day and then the next!!

Our Canyonlands itinerary is surely one to savour, not to rush but to enjoy the unfurling of wonders that are varied and different every day. We have 24 scheduled walks on this trip (and some unscheduled) and I can vouch each one is different from the last.

We cover beach walks, desert walks, cactus walks, river walks, canyon walks, mesa walks, slot walks and rim walks.

The variety of desert environments we experience also come with a list.

The Canyons too are incredibly varied; Grand by length or height, by formations and natures artistic twists and cuts.

Quite where else in the world you can walk mesas, buttes, spires, hoodooos, goblins, slots, horse Shoes and mittens all within a few weeks, I’m not sure!

This year was again spectacular in that our 24 days were void of rain.

Not one drop. The Autumn colours were bright and cheerful. The weather balmy and relaxing. Temperatures in the desert rose to 42 degrees on several days with dry air and later in the tour down to just a mere 4 degrees high on the canyon rims, again with that dry air which is a little unfamiliar for Kiwis.

If you think you would enjoy a truly ‘giving’ tour with no super early mornings, no peak-season crowds and no rain.

Te Henui extension a rustic and interesting stroll

T

he popular award winning Te Henui Walk/Cycleway which starts at East End Beach, New Plymouth and follows the Te Henui River exiting in Cumberland Street, has an extension probably not well known to visitors.

It carries on across Cumberland Street and through a rustic and interesting stroll.

If you have started the walk from the east end and exited at Cumber-

land Street turn right onto the footpath, over the road bridge and cross Cumberland Street to the grass area where there is a New Plymouth District Council signpost just off the footpath titled Te Henui Extension and Durham Avenue each with an arrow pointing to the start of the walk. These are the arrows you need to follow. The track starts at the rear of the grassy area.

The extension walk is very different to the main Te Henui Walk/Cycleway

(not suitable for bikes) and is broken into different area’s which involves walking through several streets and can be quite confusing, however is worth making the effort.

The track is more narrow but well maintained. It starts off with a pleasant rustic walk, the river on your left side and a view down into a valley that has a grotto of punga trees and ferns.

There are several little wooden bridges along the way.

There are several signposts on the right side of the track that take you up to the road above, that leads to several streets and is the main road to Inglewood. Not for you.

Keep following the main track (river on your left) until you come to about 12 steps with a forked path at the top leading left and right. Keep left and follow the signpost that says Durham Avenue, continuing around through an open space where you will come to Above left: Signpost to the lane leading to Heta Road.

Te Henui extension a rustic and interesting stroll a bush area with steps leading down into a tree covered dell and over a small wooden bridge before climbing up stairs to the top again.

When you reach the top veer right and take the short narrow path that leads between fenced houses on either side ending out onto the top end of Durham Avenue which is a cul de sac.

Cross over onto the left side of the street and walk down to the bottom where you will be in Junction Street.

Turn left and then left again at the next corner which is London Terrace.

A short way along there is a lane on the right hand side of the road leading up a hill with a sign at the entrance stating Access to Heta Road.

Walk up the lane turning right at the top (there are houses on either side) and follow the lane to the end where there is a walkway exit on the right that takes you onto Heta Road. At this point if you do not wish to continue the walk, turn left on Heta Road, walk to the bottom of the hill and you will be back in Cumberland Street.

If you wish to continue the walk cross Heta Road turn right and then left into a small cul de sac further along called Frank Frethey Place.

Cross over onto the right hand side of Frank Frethey Place, walk a short distance along and you will see a grass lane entrance between number 10 and number 12.

Take this entrance where there are steps leading down to another tree and bush covered dell.

Another lot of steep steps to climb up again and the track will then take you out into an open space where there

Mt Favourite Walk

is a fork, one leading into a street and housing area and the other turning left down a hill.

Take the left and you will be walking on a gravel path alongside a large timber and corrugated iron fence on your right and a ditch on your left.

As you walk further on there will be houses on either side and the ditch will now be on your right. This area is new housing.

This path will eventually lead you through another short tree lined track and out onto the bottom of Heta Road where the walk finishes.

Turn right and a short distance takes you back onto Cumberland Street, turn left there, cross the road and you will be back at the entrance to the main Te Henui Walkway that leads back to East End Beach. If the road is busy with traffic there is an underpass you can use.

If you don’t wish to do the complete walk starting at East End you can start the extension walk from Cumberland Street where you can park your car if you have one. The entrance to both walkways is at the bottom of the hill in Cumberland Street. Plenty of parking there.

The extension walk is easy walking and the steep stairs up and down in both dells are the only challenging part. You need good walking shoes.

This walk would be about an hour to an hour and a half from the Cumberland Sreet entrance.

Te Araroa walkers urged to take The Trail Pledge

T

e Araroa trail walkers are being urged to take a pledge to respect the environment, Māori culture, private property and other outdoorspeople before beginning their 3,000 km journey this year.

The initiative, known as The Trail Pledge, is part of Te Araroa Trust’s ongoing efforts to help raise awareness of responsible behaviour in the outdoors among New Zealanders and international visitors enjoying the trail.

Te Araroa Trust chief executive Mark Weatherall said behavioural messaging was becoming increasingly important as the number of trail walkers increased.

More than 1,100 people walked Te Araroa last year, taking in some of New Zealand’s most spectacular scenery as they wind their way from Cape Reinga in the far north to Bluff at the bottom of the South Island.

“The pledge is part of our ongoing effort to help walkers understand the Kiwi way of enjoying and caring for our outdoors. While the vast majority of Te Araroa walkers are respectful and responsible in the outdoors, there are always a few that need a helping hand,” Mr Weatherall said.

messaging from many existing outdoor codes of conduct, including the Tiaki Promise, Outdoor Access Code, Leave No Trace care codes and the Outdoor Safety Code.

It has the backing of the Department of Conservation, New Zealand Walking Access Commission and Mountain Safety Council, and will be promoted via social media, Te Araroa Trust’s website, and in a welcome email sent to all walkers who register to walk the trail.

A poster promoting the pledge will be put up at huts along the trail managed by the Department of Conservation. It would also be displayed businesses and private accommodation providers that support trail walkers.

“Managing Te Araroa and providing a high-quality experience for walkers is a team effort and we’re looking forward to exploring new ways to partner with organisations across New Zealand for the good of the trail and the outdoor experience,” Mr Weatherall said.
