Camino by electric bike

It’s not the way the pilgrims of old would have done it but Cycling Europe is now offering the option to bike the Camino by electric bike.

The 800km journey from Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela along the French Route in Northern Spain, is an 18-day trip by bike.

It’s graded moderate to challenging with some climbs of up to 900m per day. The e-bikes take the sweat out of these climbs and allow those without elite fitness to enjoy the ride.

The e-bikes also have front suspension to cope with rougher surfaces as there are some unpaved trails.

Cyclists can expect to bike up to seven hours a day. Luggage is moved between overnight stops and accommodation is a mix of two to three-star rural hotels and country guesthouses.

The route can be split into two stages of 10 and eight days if clients don’t want to do the whole route in one go.

Rest days can also be added. Cost for the 17 day rental of an e-bike is around $828 plus the 18-day tour costs $2698.

$7,600 will help signpost Rawhitiroa Wetland wildlife walk

Wild for Taranaki has received $7,600 to build interpretation and education signs along its planned Rawhitiroa Wetland Walk.

The grant comes from the Walking Access Commission. Wild for Taranaki, also known as the Taranaki Biodiversity Trust, is restoring the Taranaki wetland area close to Eltham.

Wild for Taranaki is building tracks in the area, which will be open to the public to share the value that wetlands provide to the Taranaki region. When complete, the Rawhitiroa Wetland Walk will be a kilometre long.

Along the walk, education signs will share information on four topics - mudfish, wetlands, restored communities, and collaboration.

Kirstin Foley, Wild for Taranaki’s General Manager, says the wetlands around Taranaki are incredibly rare and diverse.

“We want to rebuild a place where local Taranaki people see the native plants and animals that thrive in our province, unthreatened by invasive species. Families will be able to learn about mātātā fernbirds and long-finned tuna that live among the raupō.”

Kirstin Foley says she hopes the wetland walk will eventually link up with the existing Rotokare Sanctuary.

The Walking Access Commission’s local Regional Field Advisor Kevin Ross says the new signs will improve walkers’ experience of the wetland walk.

“This will be a short, easy walk that people of all ages can use to learn about the nature and history of their area.”

Wild for Taranaki’s Rawhitiroa Wetland Project is supported by the South Taranaki District Council (which owns the land) as well as Taranaki Regional Council and the Eltham Community Board. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Wine trail winner in Central Otago The 4 Barrels Walking Wine Trail has become one of the most requested maps at the Cromwell i-Site in Central Otago.

Launched in September 2017, the route starts in Cromwell’s town centre and connects four of the region’s premium wine tasting rooms. The trail is free with the only costs being wine tasting fees (redeemable on a purchase) as well as food that is available in three of the tasting rooms.

The 4 Barrels Walking Wine Trail is a self-paced, free walking tour of four of Central Otago’s premium wine tasting rooms.

The 8-kilometre loop trail includes Misha’s Vineyard, Aurum Wines, Scott Base and Wooing Tree Vineyard, as well as capturing some wonderful scenery through orchards and around Lake Dunstan.

Forest and Bird Enhance Waitangi Regional Park

After four years of planting at Waitangi Regional Park, the Napier Branch of the Forest and Bird Protection Society of NZ has sponsored an outdoor seat and sign overlooking the wetland area.

Branch chairman David Belcher with members Liz Carter, Neil Eagles, and Valerie Hart were on site this morning to see the new seat and an information sign alongside that explains their involvement.

“The seat and the sign are recognition of our Branch’s involvement with the enhancement of this unique area. It’s been carefully located so people can enjoy the marvellous views,” said David Belcher, Chairman Napier Branch of Forest and Bird.

The seat overlooks the wetland towards Ātea a Rangi (the celestial compass), the sea and Cape Kidnappers.

The Napier Branch of Forest and Bird, in conjunction with the regional council, has had a major role in planting through this part of the Waitangi Regional Park since its inception four years ago.

Their focus has been on enhancing the wetland to provide habitat for birds, a nursery for fish, and to create public environmental awareness.

Trekking Hokkaido’s wild lands Active Asia is promoting a nine-day small group guided tour that explores a secluded part of eastern Hokkaido, Japan.

Catchpool Valley has

walks for all fitness types

T

he popular Catchpool Valley in the Rimutaka Forest Park is a great place for camping and outdoor experiences, from easy walks to challenging wilderness hikes.

The 22,000 hectare Rimutaka Forest Park encompasses much of the Rimutaka Range, which divides the Hutt Valley from the Wairarapa Plains. Easily accessible from Wellington, the area is popular with walkers and hikers.

The Catchpool Valley recreational area is just 30 kilometres from Wellington.

There are walks in the Catchpool Valley suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

A campground, with tent and motor home sites, caters for people wanting to stay longer in this wilderness area.

Forest cabins in the more remote Orongorongo Valley are available for exclusive hire and can be booked through the visitors centre.

The Rimutaka Forest Park contains native birdlife, including bellbirds, tui, kaka kereru and ruru. Red deer, goats, pigs and possums are also present.

Catchpool Valley has walks for all fitness types the range, joined by other large native tree species at lower altitudes. In the northeastern corner of the park, a steep incline - created in 1878 for a rail route - provides one of the better mountain biking experiences in the Wellington region. The trains now use a tunnel deep in the mountain, but the incline is maintained by local authorities as a recreational area.

Getting there The entrance to Rimutaka Forest Park is on the Coast Road, 12 km south of Wainuiomata in the Hutt Valley.

The entrance gate to Catchpool valley is open during summer daylight saving 6 am–8 pm; winter 6 am–6 pm.

A

short walk in Auckland West starts at Kaurilands Domain is at Atkinson Road, Titirangi

West.

From the carpark the 1.2km walk goes through a the carved archway and follows alongside the Hibernia Stream There are a number of interpretation signs along the way, before crossing a foot bridge and heading though the covered bush section.

To the left in the domain is the Kaurilands Kindy that has been a part of the Titirangi community for over 60 years and on the other side is the GEIS Intermediate School. Due to the kindy being located within the Kaurilands Domain the kindy is not allowed signage on the road, so many locals don’t even know they are here!

The pathway carries on its way to Ceramco Park. It’s only a short walk, but if you wanted to make it l o n g e r y o u c a n wa l k t h e p a r k .

Note: There are no toilets here. Parking iswww.walkingnewzealand.co.nz good with the carpark area.

ithin the wider boundaries of our cities what an amazing diversity of landscapes we have in this amazing country of ours.

With the restrictions imposed by kauri dieback disease, our boots are discovering other less trodden areas in the outdoors. One such walk is Big Sand Island or Manukapua Island.

Possibly the best time to visit would be in the shoulder seasons. High summer temperatures would make a very hot thirsty day. But in ideal conditions it is a unique experience.

After walking across the sand flats the island presents itself as a vast series of sand dunes interspersed with grasses north of Auckland on the convoluted and low bush. coastline of the Kaipara Harbour. From It is a palette of harmonious colour Wellsford turn left at the Caltex station highlighted by the bright blue sky above. and follow signs to the right for Port Albert. Turn left into Wharehine Road, then Run Road to Tapora. Access is off Okahukura Road at the very end of the Tapora Peninsula.

Look for the Okahukura Conservation Area sign. From there it’s a narrow one way sand track.

And a big sandy island it truly is.

A wildlife refuge hosting many migratory birds as well as our dangerously rare NZ dotterel. Nesting areas are at either end of the island, so be mindful of them.

There are no facilities so come prepared. Shelter is minimal and of course our prevailing westerly winds can make their presence keenly felt on a blustery Abovel left: The group on Manukapua Island.

Footprints trail the ever-changing sand patterns as you circumnavigate the island.

Distance is deceptive in such uninterrupted landscapes.

The sand dunes provide a contoured skyline of bright sandy peaks and shadowed troughs.

Sand, sand and more sand For those of us who can remember the old western song “Shifting Whispering Sands”, this is it . Governed by wind direction and slope of the dune, little sand rivulets and mist- like sprays change shape and pattern as you walk.

This walk gives yet another view of the Kaipara Harbour, part of Auckland’s coastline that has been largely overlooked in th past for tourism. Now it’s gaining popularity on and off the water. It has a meandering intricate coastline of 3350 km the largest Harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. ( NZ Geographic).

An interesting detour on the return to Wellsford is a visit to Minniesdale Chapel on Shegadeen Road at Wharehine. This is a delightful simple little historic chapel looking out to the Kaipara waters. It was established by the Albertland settlers under the direction of the Rev. E S Brookes in 1867.

Many of those settlers and their descendants are buried in the peaceful grounds, a fitting end to their hardworking lives of endeavour in a new land.

As the photos show, definitely a favourite walk.

Two ways to hike to Herepai Hut

n Valentines day, last year 19 Manawatu Tramping & Ski Club (MTSC) Wednesday Trampers chose to dodge the romantic frenzy of the day by tramping to the Herepai Hut in the Tararua Forest Park.

We assembled at the Manganatoka Valley car park and at 9am made our way across the first swing bridge. Here we were By Bob briefed by trip leader Evan. Hodgson Six trampers chose to tramp up the bottle track and on to the hut.

This is a steep route and requires several river crossings on a day of low flows.

Most made it to the hut then back via the two swing bridges.

The remaining thirteen trampers then tramped along the valley to the second and longer swing bridge and up to Cross Roads and on to the hut.

Again most made it to the hut for lunch.

All were out by 3pm some a little weary on what was a warm and humid day and a 10km tramp for all.

It was a contented bunch that then visited the Lazy Graze Cafe in Eketahuna. The van was back to Palmerston North by 5pm.

Hut climb has a mixed track

M

t Herepai is located in the Tararuas Forest Park, Northern Wairarapa, and is situated on the Haukura Ridge. The track begins at the road end and makes its way along the river for just over a kilometer.

The climb starts at the second river crossing. The climb to the ridge is constant and rooted. Its not too steep.

The ridge has a signpost and here at 770m turn right and make your way along a good ridge path to the hut. Notice the sign with the tree bottles as you make your way down to the saddle. Its then a sharp climb up 100m (height) to the hut.

From the hut make your way north towards the ridge. This is a steep climb up to 900m in the forest before heading out above the tree line.

The path remains difficult as there is plenty of tussock grass hiding the way forward and the path remains up hill.

Water is available at the hut.

Allow seven hours in good summer conditions. In poor conditions it will take longer.

Fact File Getting there: The path starts about 20 minutes from Mt Bruce. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

It is classed as a good day hike up to the ridge Length: 12.95km.

Grade: Intermediate steep in places This path goes above the treeline and is very exposed to bad weather.

Tramping in the Tararuas requires proper preparation take adequate food and water, warm and waterproof clothing, and sun protection in summer. And advise someone of your intentions.

Reasonable cellphone coverage along this route once on the ridge, including Herepai Hut and the top of mountain.

Herepai Hut is best accessed from Putara Road end.

Approximate times from nearest road and huts Putara Road end: Two hours.

taying in the fully-booked National Park YHA hostel on Friday night, December 7th, 2018, we were all gazing out at the three Mountain Gods gifted to Aotearoa/New Zealand in 1887 by Ngati Tuwharetoa Chief, Te Heuheu Tukino IV (Horonuku).

Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu are the central focus of the Tongariro National Park.

Those staying at the hostel provided a taste of contemporary tourism in Aotearoa. It was youthful, ethnically diverse and friendly. There were so many Germans, one wondered if there were any under 30s left in Deutschland.

Many of these young adventurers

were there for the same reason: to walk the Tongariro (borne away in the South wind) Alpine Crossing on Saturday.

19.4 kilometres lay ahead (nearly a halfmarathon) with an elevation gain of 1,125 metres from the Mangatepopo end.

Not all beer and skittles In the changeable weather and volcanic hazard zone of this fantastic dual natural and cultural World Heritage area, preparation was essential.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) pamphlet highlighted some of the challenges which lay ahead: the searing sun, dehydration (no drinking water is available throughout most of the trail), biting wind, torrential rain, enveloping fog, uneven volcanic terrain, and snow/ ice conditions. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

The popular walk has been the location of many a rescue over the years with trampers wandering off track, taking wrong turns, or underestimating the climb and the time needed to do it. A report released last year showed search-and-rescue missions in the Central Plateau, which includes the crossing, shot up 163 per cent over the past few years while all other national parks remained stable. (Disagreements over rescues from Tongariro Crossing, Steph Rangi, Feb. 01, 2019) In other words, you begin the trip not knowing if for one reason or another, you will actually be able to reach the Ketetahi Bus Park on the other side. I had been warned previously about having to turn back by a number of teachers and parents with school groups as the weather’s fury closed in. For this reason, my pack included waterproof and warm gear, food, electrolytes, sunblock, arnica for sore legs, antiseptic cream/ bandaids, etc.

Our party of four met at 7am in front of the hostel for the shuttle bus trip to Mangatepopo Valley. You can start from the Ketetahi end but there is more climbing particularly to reach South Crater from this side, adding an hour or more to the trip.

It’s a beautiful day A warm, windless day with full visibility was forecast. We could see Mt Taranaki on the way as the shuttle headed 7 kilometres off SH 47 towards Mt. of the Rings aura is still powerful after all these years. The Tongariro alpine area is definitely ‘other worldly’.

There is plenty of support from the ‘get-go’ to ensure the trip is as enjoyable as it could be. DOC has constructed bridges, wooden walk ways, and steps.

Signage was placed throughout the walk highlighting background information, dangerous areas, etc. Toilets were available at the beginning and end as well as two places along the trail. These were well-used as there was little bush or tree cover to duck behind if ‘nature called’.

All this infrastructure was necessary to support the increasing international interest in the ‘finest one-day walk’ in the world.

The track is equipped to handle around 600 walkers daily but on busy days it’s getting as many as 3000. Visitor numbers have been increasing 15 percent year-on-year with around 125,000 people walking the crossing last year. The first few kilometres were an easy gradient giving a taste of the variety of terrain we would encounter during the day. The Mangatepopo Valley was carved out by glaciers and then filled in by lava flows.

You follow many streams and see a few lakes throughout the walk but the water is not drinkable due to the high mineral content from the volcanic surrounds. There was a steady stream of people and many had not read the DOC information. Unsuitable foot wear, lack

One path to rule them all of hats, sunglasses, sunblock, and above all low levels of fitness would have tempered any joy of completing this walk for many that day.

The Devil’s Staircase lies in waiting As you leave the end of the Mangatepopo Valley, the sign below appears at the start of the Devil’s Staircase. Even the Shuttle driver warned us that morning about the ‘elephant in the room’. It is a ‘lung burner’, climbing 340 metres

from Soda Springs to the South Crater.

There are hundreds of steps, and a section of chains to steady your continual ascent. If you want to know how much climbing you have left, you just look to the next ridge line to see the long line of people creeping ever- upwards.

This sign became a good place to take stock, ‘slip,slop,slap’, have a drink and enjoy the panoramic vistas.

As we ascended to South Crater, there

were a few traffic jams as slower walkers struggled. There were a few bends you could pass or be passed on but there was not much room to manoeuvre. At any slightly flat area, people pulled off to catch their breath and regroup.

As you approach the still-active Red Crater, the highest point at 1,886 metres, you begin to realise ‘why you came this way’. The striking oxidation of iron in the rock creates a deep velvet cloak on the side of the hollow crater wall. Views to the east expand to the Kaimanawa Forest Park and the Desert Road.

Te Wai-whakaata-o-te-Rangihiroa / Rangihiroa’s mirror- Blue Lake The trail flattens out again and then a short climb brings you to the largest lake on the crossing.

Te Rangihiroa is said to have explored this area around 1750.

(DOC pamphlet). You are advised not to swim in the lake or eat nearby as it is Tapu/Sacred. But you can’t help stopping and staring at this amazing body of water.

It is best to see the lakes between late September to April as they can be completely blanketed by ice/snow in winter months. This active volcanic zone is scattered with reminders of the 2012 eruptions such as the newest steaming vents at the Te Maari craters which are visible from the lakes.

A walk of two halves: Descent to Ketetahi Bus Park From the Blue Lake at 1,700m, you begin a continuous descent over the next 8-9 kilometers to the bus park at 700m.

Hidden Gems: Ngarotopounamu/Emerald Lakes Your first view of these ‘greenstone-hued lakes’ below South Crater is breath-taking. They have been coloured by the minerals leeching from the Red Crater filling the explosion craters with cold, acidic water. Steaming vents/ fumaroles around the lakes emit that ‘rotten egg’ odour.

To descend, you must plunge down the steep scree hillside. This is a common feature of walking at altitude in Aotearoa’s volcanic regions. My Nordic walking poles were handy for traversing the slippery slope. Others found the material difficult to cope with, falling and sliding, or heading as far as they could to one side to hook up again with the

There is a brief respite from the long ever-descending switchbacks at the Ketetahi Shelter where there is a nice deck to sit on and gaze at lakes Rotoaira and Taupo. Toilets are available but no

Looming Lahar The descent is often more difficult than the ascent on old legs. Luckily my walking poles came into their own and I was able to motor down to the shelter and beyond.

Eventually the bush provided much needed shade with the added bonus of following the Manga-a-te-tipua Stream.

My Favourite Walk

Although you have left the active volcanic zone, you have now entered a ‘Higher Risk Lahar Hazard Zone’. Most locals will be familiar with the term but perhaps not all the tourists. “Most lahars on Mt Ruapehu are caused by eruptions through the crater lake. An eruption throws the water [out of the lake] onto the slopes around it and that water concentrates in a valley and comes hooning down the valley.” Lahar can also contain ash, mud, ice and other debris, and move rapidly at 60-90 kilometres per hour. (Volcanic Eruption Detection System on Mount Ruapehu from Our changing World, RNZ, 9:34 pm on 11 September 2014) The Tongariro Eruption Detection System (TEDS) provides a warning light system at either end of the crossing.

The buses and shuttles were waiting After nearly six hours, we arrived at the Ketetahi Bus Park. There are set times for pick up and we had a short wait. It was time to sit in the shade and relax.

A group of young fitness instructors or personal trainers were doing their stretches and warm-down exercises. I was sure I would topple over if I tried something similar, so I just sat there in a reflective mood.

The Crossing experience exceeds the hype. Variations in colour, terrain, elevation and volcanic activity areas keep things interesting the whole way. The ever-present mountain gods, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu guard this middle-earth realm. These panoramic vistas will keep drawing people back.

Perhaps next time we will attempt the Tongariro Northern Circuit, or ascents of Ngauruhoe and Tongariro.

Walk in Singapore a city in a garden

f you are visiting Singapore put this amazing attraction on your “to do” list, it is a must to visit.

Often called a city in a garden the world’s largest greenhouse and flower dome is situated in a nature park that

spans 101 acres of reclaimed land in the central region of Singapore.

A huge colourful futuristic park opened in June 2012 it offers a vibrant horticultural oasis of lush greenery and floral displays.

Adjacent to the Marina Reservoir and behind the luxurious Marina Bay Sands

Hotel, the park consists of three water front gardens, Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden, the largest being Bay South Garden at 54 acres.

aiheke Island is renown for its great weather, splendid beaches, picturesque vineyards, native bush and many beautiful coastal walks.

One such walk the popular Matiatia, Church Bay, Oneroa (southern loop), starts from the Matiatia Ferry Terminal with stunning views to expansive reserves and charming villages.

Other surrounding outside gardens to visit, Heritage Gardens with ethnic plants, World of Plants Dragon fly Lake with a 440 metre boardwalk, Children’s Garden, Sun Pavilion for cacti enthusiasts and many other beautiful walks too many to mention.

There are many cafes and eating places, all at different prices to suit all pockets. Plenty of places to buy drinks and also access to toilets. Plenty of seats in the shade.

The duration in the three main inside gardens is probably about three hours

and the outside gardens can take up the rest of the day. I spent the whole day there and could have stayed longer except that the heat had got to me. Be sure to catch the beautiful evening light display.

Because the temperature is in the high 30’s it is very humid, hot and tiring so always carry a bottle of water or fruit juice. Your clothes will be stuck to your body. Even in the shade it is very hot but be sure to enjoy.

I found the taxi fares to be very cheap compared to New Zealand. The Flower Dome, Cloud Forest and OCBC Skyway are open from 9am to 9pm and the outdoor gardens from 5 am to 2 am but may pay to check in case of change. Brochures can be obtained from all hotels.

Start at Matiatia Wharf and follow the path to the southern end of Matiatia Bay. Cross the footbridge, follow the track uphill to the lookout on Nick Johnstone Drive and along the coastal track to Te Miro Bay. Continue along the coast to Church Bay and, when you get to the end, follow the track along the fence line to the top of the hill towards Church Bay Road.

Follow Church Bay Road through Alison Park to Oneroa village. If heading back to Matiatia, turn left into Ocean View Road and follow it to the wharf or enter Atawhai Whenua Reserve and follow the lower track along the edge of the wetland to Matiatia Bay. Alternative routes: Option one: Leave the track at Te Miro Bay and walk back to Oneroa via Nick Johnstone Drive. This will cut the length of the walk by half an hour.

Option two: Loop through Pio Rehutai Reserve at Church Bay Road. This will take you through the hills above Blackpool and Oneroa, and it links back to Church Bay Road. This will add half an hour to the walk.

For a longer walk, from Church Bay Road walk up the private driveway with public access and take the loop back to Oneroa.

There are spectacular views on this walk. A Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand revegetation project and historic sites are the highlights of this walk.

Time: Approximately two hours Dogs: Keep your dog/s under control, particularly on steep sections of the track.

Facilities: Toilets and kiosk at Matiatia ferry terminal. Toilets and shops at Oneroa. Toilets at Blackpool Reserve.

Kahikatea Walk - a nature walk

T

he Kahikatea Walk in the Pohangina Valley, Manawatu, is an easy walk, a great introduction to nature, and has a well defined and easy to follow track that is suitable even for children of all ages.

This track is maintained by DOC (Department Of Conservation).

Bring your own drinking water as there is no fresh water available.

The Kahikatea Trees are enormous, leaving one in awe, at how small we are.

They tower up into the sky with their branches stretching out to the world.

As the name of the walk suggests, mature kahikatea are abundant and are the stars in this reserve.

If the ground is dry enough try lying on your back to look up at the canopy and admire these majestic native trees.

There is a stand of rata trees beside the track that started out life by piggybacking on larger trees. They perch in the tree as an epiphyte and send down roots that then form their ground supAbove left and below: The well formed track is easy walking through the trees.

Cape Naturaliste Light House to Yallingup

e were visting Perth, Western Australia and had the opportunity of going to Margaret River to do some day walks on the Cape to Cape.

We chose to first walk Cape Naturaliste in the Leeuwin - Naturaliste National Park Lighthouse to Yallingup, a 14km walk along the coast and cliff tops.

Before we left Margaret River it was pouring with rain (they had cooler temperatures than normal) but by the time we were ready to leave the rain had cleared and we still had a 45 minute drive to the start of the walk.

We headed off on the Cape to Cape walk at 9.30am, and looked around the lighthouse first which was very special to see. Beautiful views with a light Above: On the Cape to Cape Track.

The first 3.5 km was a sealed path, great for families with children and prams, wheel chairs and grannies that definitely encourages families to walk.

The views were stunning, the sea so blue and the sky so blue. We had been told by a local that you could see the whales from the walk but the whales had already migrated away.

We came to Sugar Loaf Rock which was a great formation in the sea, we stopped for morning tea and to soak up the views.

sand and some easy to access but others very hard to get to as we were above on the cliffs. We took our time as we stopped to take many photos and just look and soak in the scenery.

The track changed to sand and limestone and was very narrow in places.

You also had to keep an eye out for snakes and yes we came across a black snake who had heard us thumping along the track and it slid off into the low bush to hide. We just saw about 20cm of the snake and were amazed that it was around in the middle of the day.

The limestone formations were incredible leaving amazing formations.

There was so much to see and the scenery changed all the time.

The flys were around and they just stuck like glue so us Kiwis got the fly nets out to put over our heads and this made a huge difference.

We thought we would not see anyone that we knew and it made our life a lot easier and they said that the fly nets also protected you from the sun.

We had lunch on a seat facing the sea and just enjoyed the views of the coastline for kilometers.

After lunch we headed off and the sand became softer under foot as we came closer to Yallinghup, a very small surfing spot with beautiful beaches.

We had an absolutely fantastic day and ended up in a cafe for a cool drink and a cuppa and waited for our pick up to take us back to Margaret River.

Sculpture Walk in Botanic Gardens

P

icturesque and fascinating, hilly but short – that’s the Sculpture Walk in Wellington’s Botanic Gardens.

Picturesque because it’s in the beautiful surrounds of the gardens with its glorious glimpses of Wellington and the harbour; fascinating because each sculpture has an intriguing story to tell; hilly like most of Wellington but short.

The Sculpture Walk needs about 45 minutes to walk but is so interesting that it definitely demands more time to get the most from it. I spent nearly all one Sunday afternoon enjoying it.

To start the walk, I take the cablecar up from Lambton Quay to Kelburn, armed with the map illustrated here.

Actually the tracks would have been easier to locate if I had taken a detailed map as well. I discover this when I find myself on the wrong side of the Met Office, soon after starting. No hardship though, the linking road back to Manuka Way is in thick bush with arrows of sunshine slanting through.

The star attraction of the whole Sculpture Walk is the figure by Henry Moore, celebrated British sculptor. Unique in New Zealand, this form is on the SalaAbove: right Henry Moore’s Bronze lords it over the Salamanca Lawn.

New Zealand Walk

Sculpture Walk in Botanic Gardens manca Lawn which is above the Rose Garden. I decide to leave it to last as a grand finale to my walk.

I emerge from my bush walk on to Manuka Way and soon reach ‘Rudderstone’ – the spectacular archway by Denis O’Connor of Waiheke Island. Much of his work uses themes of migration and seafaring and ‘Rudderstone’ symbolises voyaging from the Old World (black marble = the night sky) to the New World (blue marble = the sea and white marble, the sky). It’s impressive.

A little further down you encounter the strange ‘Listening and Viewing Device’ as it’s called, at the top of a hill.

Four tall white columns hold a black inverted cone made from copper piping which can vibrate. “It looks like a temple standing among the pine trees,” says the artist, Andrew Drummond.

Further on is ‘Peacemaker’ by Chris Booth. These giant basalt bounders sit comfortably with each other, symbolising peace amongst humans. Their shapes also echo the transmitters/receivers on the Met Service building in the Botanic Gardens.

The pathway twists and turns but soon I reach the pleasant little herb garden. On the far wall is a lion-head fountain which is hand-carved in natural stone and nearby a sundial of Takaka marble. I linger for a bit, exploring the different herbs.

As you leave the herb garden and start walking down towards the Rose Garden, the most bizarre sight confronts you – metal trees on the hillside.

As a tribute to the Kiwi No 8 fencing wire credo, Regan Gentry has used 20kms of fencing wire to construct looka-likes of wharariki (flax), ti kouka (cabbage tree), pohutukawa and toetoe. They were originally made for Wellington’s waterfront – treeless at the time, so it’s ironic they have landed up in a setting of trees, herbs and roses!

are exactly right for such a majestic form.

There are additional sculpures in the nextdoor children’s playground (Old Man Wellington or ‘Ol Stumpy’) and ‘Bee Lady’ on the Treehouse balcony, but I stick to my decision that the Henry Moore is my finale and I walk down the Botanic Gardens, through the Bolton Street Memorial Park and back to the central city.

But I’m heading for the Picnic Café to have a sit-down and a coffee before heading uphill to the crowning glory of the Sculpture Walk – Henry Moore’s bronze.

I decide to take the easiest, winding road up towards the Cable Car and branch off towards the Norwood Path to locate the ‘Body to Soul’ sculpture by Mary-Louise Browne.

To my surprise I am spot-on and here is the black granite staircase with the word Body on a lower step. The word changes one letter at a time up the staircase until the word Soul in engraved on the last step.

Now I’m heading for the Henry Moore. In 1988, it was placed in Midland Park in the centre of the city but was moved to its present site in 1995. It demanded space around it.

And here it is – a huge, commanding, resplendent bronze, lording it over the Salamanca Lawn which is wide and sloping. I gaze at the various planes of its surface – there’s a sort of rhythm to them.

The sun lights up the form here and there. It’s monumental. Magnificent. I stand for a long time, gazing at it. Two Maori kids run up and touch its smooth surface, adding just the right human touch. The extensive grass surrounds

hina! A vast land of long history, ancient cultures, and diverse landscapes.

In the last 20 plus years, largely through my work involving the NZ China Friendship Society, I have enjoyed spending up to five months per year in China, and have now designed and led

at least one tour to China every year since 2008.

When I have spare time in China, I enjoy exploring far and wide the natural and wilderness areas. It was my love for these natural scenic wonders that led me to take a ‘Walking and Culture� tour to some of the best of these sites.

ficient travel package, with easy connections from region to region on bullet trains, and access to the mountains by coach, three weeks of travel opened these to a group of 14 Kiwi walkers.

Ten came from Whangarei walking groups and members of the Whangarei Tramping Club, and were joined by four from other areas of the country. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Overseas Walks

They are spectacular steep rock ancient extrusions from the earth, sometimes rounded, sometimes jagged. Their beauty has been captured for centuries in traditional landscape paintings, and revered by Buddhists with temples built on impossible outcrops. The paths are now maintained for people like us, who want to tread these paths and marvel at each corner as new vistas emerge.

Then there was Red Rock Gorge at Yuntai Shan, Henan Province, with the small river having eroded deep into the 1.4 billion year old rock.

A magical walk between sheer walls, with waterfalls tumbling down the hewn out rock around every bend.

This is just a sample of some of the walks we did. The local people have established their lives around these scenic splendours, so where better to visit some of the most picturesque villages?

On the route, there was also the ancient city of Kaifeng, which has the impressive history of serving as a capital in seven different dynasties. Today, it is the Song dynasty that is best preserved in the architecture and parks.

Longmen is a site of Buddhist grottoes dating from 386 AD and visited in a two kilometre walk alongside the Yi River near another ancient capital, Luoyang.

The very famous Terracotta Warriors were an essential stop-off on the way to

the ancient Tang capital of Xi’an. Then back to the modern marvel of Shanghai for a couple of nights before departure.

The tour was manageable by anybody with a passion for exploring by foot, with a young heart to enjoy new experiences.

The food experiences cannot be overlooked. Each location we passed through had its own regional speciality, which we sought out with the help of our delightful and efficient Chinese guide Sylvia.

We travelled together for 20 days in a close group. Most were in the age range 60 to 72.

The three main mountains were Wuyi Shan (Shan is mountain in Chinese) in Fujian Province in the southeast where we started the tour, Huang Shan in Anhui Province, through to Hua Shan in Shaanxi Province in the central north. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
