Walk talk Tracks to be upgrading and reopening in 2020

In May 2018, Auckland Council closed the forested areas of the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park to increase protection of the forest from kauri dieback disease.

Several tracks were marked as priorities for upgrade during 2018/19. Staff have been working hard carrying out improvement work on tracks so that they meet the standard for reopening, including the Kitekite track that opened on Boxing Day. Rachel Kelleher, Manager Regional Parks, says while the work programme for 2019 is confirmed, the council would like to find out what tracks the community want to prioritise for the next round of upgrade work from 2020.

“There is significant demand for recreational opportunity in the Waitākere Ranges and community expectation that further tracks will be reopened.

“We have worked with Te Kawerau ā Maki on a track reopening plan and now want to hear from our concessionaires, regular park users and the local community about what tracks they think we should prioritise our efforts towards in the next two to five years.”

Public consultation on this plan is now open and will continue through to 14 March 2019.

Northern Southland Walkers

The Northern Southland walk group meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays each month for walks in and around Southland.

Walkers travel to walks in pooled private vehicles, and share the cost of fuel. It is usually between $2 and $10 dollars.

There is no subscription fee to be part of the group.

Note: You do not have to have a vehicle to be part of the group as often arrangements can be made to pick people up on the way to walks depending on their location.

New hiking route through Patagonia’s wilderness

A new hiking route that winds through Patagonia’s wilderness has just been opened. The trek is designed to boost tourism numbers and highlight the need for conservation.

Viva Expeditions says this walk suits a seasoned tramper, at 2,800km, it covers 17 national parks and some of the wildest spaces on earth.

The trail was thought up by Tompkins Conservation, an organisation founded by philanthropists Douglas and Kristine Tompkins. Not only will this route showcase how special this destination is, but brave trampers taking on this route will bring much-needed funds to support its conservation.

Viva believes Chile has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world with a variety of climates and diverse landscapes.

Te Araroa Trail

Te Araroa Trail: NZ’s own pilgrimage track

I

f you mentioned the Te Araroa Trail to New Zealanders a few years ago, it wasn’t uncommon to be met with a blank stare.

Countless travel blogs, and major media outlets like National Geographic

and CNN, spoke excitedly about the amazing new long walk that stretched the length of our country, but Kiwis seemed to be out of the loop.

Dozens, and then hundreds, of international visitors started walking our

national trail, but the proportion of New Zealand walkers was relatively low.

Fast forward to now, and the spectacular 3000-kilometre trail from Cape Reinga to Bluff is beginning to embed itself into the Kiwi psyche.

This summer the number of people walking the full length of the trail will exceed 1000 for the first time, and hundreds of thousands of people walk individual sections every year.

in five the year before. The majority of those walking individual sections of the trail, particularly those that are close to our cities, are New Zealanders.

A year into my role as chief executive of Te Araroa Trust, I’m now absolutely convinced that we’ve got something truly unique and worth celebrating.

The trail passes through some of our country’s most aweinspiring landscapes and takes in more than 20 towns and cities. Walking its length, or just individual sections, brings connection with fellow New Zealanders, cultural and historic sites, and nature.

who want to take a break from the virtual world while getting fit at the same time.

For people with children, it’s an ideal way to introduce them to the wonders of the outdoors.

The trail’s economic contribution is also growing. The average throughwalker spends between $7000 and $10,000 during their three to five-month journey.

The patronage and energy they bring is beneficial for the many small towns and businesses they visit. This includes hostels and campsites that host them, supermarkets and general stores where they stop to get supplies, and cafes and restaurants they graze at before heading back into the wild.

A

n easy walking or cycling trail situated in the heart of Hamilton City, the Hamilton Lake Domain Walkway is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists alike.

The esplanade walkway around the lake is a popular fitness circuit and walking route. Â The walk around the edge of Hamilton Lake (Rotoroa) covers 3.8 kilometres and winds through natural lakeside vegetation, past playgrounds and grassed parkland as well as the Verandah Cafe Above: Yachts make a pretty picture on the lake.

which is the perfect place to relax with a coffee after some exercise.

Hamilton Lake (also known as Lake Rotoroa) walkway includes varied natural lakeside vegetation, grassed parklands perfect for a picnic, a boardwalk section, playgrounds and a café. The walkway is mostly flat making it suitable for pushchairs and is also a popular dog walking spot.

Birdlife also flourish in the Hamilton Lake area with ducks, pukeko, geese and other birdlife all easily spotted around the lake.

The Hamilton Lake Walkway can be accessed from various points, with the main carparks off Ruakiwi Road and Lake Cresent (Innes Common).

It’s a great option for less mobile people as there is seating available regularly around the entire lake.

Hamilton Lake Domain has a long history as one of Hamilton’s premiere parks. It is a significant recreational facility for residents of Hamilton City and beyond within walking distance from the CBD. Hamilton Lake Domain provides a focal point for a variety of water and land based activities as well as offering a unique ecological environment in the heart of Hamilton City.

Lake Rotoroa caters for water based recreational activities such as yachting, wind surfing, canoeing, paddle boats, model boats, dragon boating, waka ama, raft racing and a range of informal activities.

The major destination playground beside the Verandah Cafe provides kids a place to play while their minders enjoy a coffee with a view of the lake, which can also be enjoyed from the covered picnic area in the refurbished amenity block.

Auckland Council’s Head of Parks Services, Mark Bowater, says Auckland’s parks reflect the region’s unique and diverse landscapes.

Beach

Take in the stunning, panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf and its offshore islands by walking the Coastal Track at Long Bay Regional Park. This multi-use track takes you to the northern end of the park through coastal bush and secluded bays (be aware that you may encounter the occasional nude bather at Pōhutukawa Bay).

Bush

Explore Waiheke Island's Whakanewha Regional Park on the Park Walk track. This looped walk takes in many highlights, including mature coastal forest, the scenic Cascades Stream and stunning views over the park and back to mainland Auckland.

From the main carpark take the Nïkau Track to join the Tarata Track. Turn right off this track and enjoy the walk to the small but beautiful waterfalls. From here, return back along the Tarata Track with its spectacular views over the park and the Hauraki Gulf to the mainland, and return to the car park via the Kōwhai Track.

This year the first walk was attended

by Lis and Graeme where Lis gave an interesting and comprehensive talk outlining this history.

They have not been active walkers with the group for some years but still live in the Te Puke area and have kept in touch with the group on a regular basis and try to attend any social events throughout the year.

We learnt from Lis that about 1991 with the help of local residents a book was written and published called Mangatoi Revisited which put a lot of the history of the pioneer farmers and others into print and so popular were the sales of the book there was some money available for another project.

It was decided this should be to construct a viewing platform on the summit of Otanewainuku over the trig site and this platform is there to this day and visited by thousands of walkers each year.

In describing the trials and tribulations of what went into the building of the platform, Lis was both informative and humorous and as most of the materials (even water to mix the cement) had to be carried to the top by hand there was plenty of opportunity to expand on some of the exploits of the volunteers.

This labour was helped by the cajoling into service of a helicopter to lift and

place the heavy poles and some Army Territorials who were exercising in the area adding greatly to the manpower.

Others helped with donations of funds and materials but time and energy were the two things in greatest demand.

The view takes in Lottin Point to the east, the Kaimai and Coromandel ranges to the west, Rotorua and its environs to the south and out to coastal Bay of Plenty in the north.

Walking to the summit from the shelter takes about 45 minutes and the return can be made via a loop track.

which takes in some truly magnificent trees and further on the 1 ½ hour walk into Whataroa Falls and swimming hole which is always popular especially in the summer.

For the more adventurous a track through to Quarry Road via Otawa Trig starts here, but walkers should not take this walk lightly as it is a 7 ½ hour trek and the track is not as well defined as other tracks in the area.

The prolific bird life in Otanewainuku Forest has been assisted by an intensive pest control programme. It has also been supplemented by the reintroduction of kiwi and kokako and walkers never have to go far before being visited by the omnipresent robins.

Twenty two people plus a few grandchildren attended this walk and new members are also welcome.

My Favourite Walk

A wildlife walk around the Kaikoura Peninsula

T

he pungent smell of seals in Kaikoura is the first assault on the senses. The second is the breathtaking views over the shore platform to mountains climbing above the clouds.

Then your ears pick up on the number of different languages being spoken from the crowds of tourists starting to arrive.

We headed onto the shore platform – a vast expanse of white, which changes to black granite on the water’s edge. The nearby marine laboratory has study sites here – we found small markers embedded in the rock.

Around the head of the peninsula are a series of bays. The surface changes to loose, small rounded rocks, then you hear the clamour of the red-billed gull colony, also a marine study area. The rocks here are complex shapes with multiple layers.

Jumping a few cracks, we came to the first bay. Introduced grasses like vipers bugloss are knee high. Native Marlborough rock daisies cling to the cliff edges or cascade down the gullies.

We’ve missed the main flowering period in early spring.

We climb a steep track up a small land “island” for views over the bay and towards the black-back gull colonies.

My Favourite Walk

You can swim, but you’d need booties to navigate the rocks. Numerous boats and crayfish pots bob offshore.

About half way along the peninsula, I head up a track through a small copse of planted ngaio on to a wooden stair case.

Then it’s only an hour back along a relatively flat grass track with views of the bays below to the south.

Kaikoura township is compact with an information centre by the main carpark for booking whale watching and other wildlife tours.

The best coffee is at the Beach House and we’d recommend the Top Shop fish and chips while sitting on the large round, grey (and hot!) stones at sunset.

Kaikoura is jammed packed, so expect to take at least half an hour to drive out again!

Walk Allow two to three hours on a dropping tide around the coast and two hours return along the top track. Allow more time if you intend to visit the South Bay Ngai tahu Visitor Centre.

The facilities here are impressive.

My Favourite Walk

A wildlife walk around the Kaikoura Peninsula and sun protection – there is little to no shade.

Facilities There are four toilets where there is drinkable water and a small carpark with limited shade.

You may have to ■ park alongside the road approach and you can walk along a narrow boardwalk to the main carpark. Around lunch time, crayfish meals and icecreams are sold on the coastal side of the road.

Wildlife All native wildlife is protected. We arrived at 9am to find a fur seal sleeping on the road of the carpark. People were approaching within touching distance

of the seal which got up and moved off.

Keep at least 20m as they can bite, and walk on the inland side of sleeping seals.

Dolphins are often seen offshore, so take binoculars. During spring and summer, keep out of the gull colonies. Angry birds will try to attack you. Take a long lens and tripod to get great views of them flying.

Driving there Take SH1 north from Christchurch. Online traffic reports recommends three hours, but we left early and took the normal two hours 15 minutes plus a break in Cheviot.

A couple of short sections were one way, and the 10km over the last hill is 60km per hour. Road works and tunnels over the railway line are impressive.

Earthquake uplift

The most obvious sign of the Culverdon 2016 7.8 earthquake is numerous slips. Coastal rock platforms are slightly more exposed and the sea bed is raised, meaning that the tide doesn’t come in as far.

The road north of Kaikoura where there was large uplift is still under repair.

Wainuiomata shared pathway a milestone

T

he seal has gone down and the bicycles are out on stage one of the Wainuiomata Shared Path that runs from the Hutt Valley over the Wainuiomata Hill.

The new route, which will run from Gracefield to Wainuiomata, is part of a $28 million investment by Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) in a network of walking and cycling routes for the city.

Council’s Senior Project Engineer Simon Cager, who has led the project since 2015, says “it’s fantastic to see the seal go down on stage one of the Wainuiomata Shared Path.

“With the opening of the Pukeatua Bridge in 2015, and now stage one of the shared path, we’re seeing more and more people walking and cycling the Wainuiomata Hill.

“I’m looking forward to the completion of the project in 2019.”

The development of the shared path is broken into two stages: the now open stage one, Gracefield to Pukeatua Bridge, and the to-be-completed stage two, Pukeatua Bridge to Wainuiomata. It features a four metre off road sealed path for pedestrians and cyclists, new roadside barriers and upgraded LED street lighting.

Work on stage two began in July with vegetation removal, earthworks and new retaining walls. Construction is expected to take eight months, with completion of stage two in May 2019.

What an awesome weekend. The weather was perfect, the scenery spectacular, the company was great, and the hospitality of the local farmers impressive for the Warkworth Walks.

In early November, we travelled to Warkworth to take part in the walking festival held each year.

We chose ‘Mahurangi Masterpiece’ and ‘Hoteo and the High Country’.

Both walks were really interesting.

On Saturday, the bus left Warkworth at 8 45am and took us down Sandspit Road and on down Mahurangi East Road to Niccoll’s farm – owned by Tony and Diane for over 50 yrs.

We wandered up hill and down dale, and beside coastal wetlands full of ducks and frogs. There were huge old pohutukawas ready to burst into flower, and Above: Coastline on Niccoll’s farm.

All the way we had clear views, of islands I hadn’t seen – Hauturu (Little Barrier), Kawau, Motuketekete, Moturekareka, Motuora, Motutara, Te Haupa (Saddle Island) Mahurangi and Tiritirimatangi.

To add to the picture, lots of ‘ yachties’ were out enjoying the breeze. It was truly spectacular.

At high points, our guide, Luke Williamson, gave us snippets of information about the history of the local area, and its extensive boat building industry in the 1800’s. He also pointed out an oyster farm in the harbour below.

We stopped for morning tea at a beautiful little bay, bordered by Flaxes with bright red flowers. High above on a knoll was a picturesque bach, with views from Little Barrier to Mt Eden and the Sky tower in central Auckland – a tiny www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Beautiful countryside and views on bus ride to Dill’s farm, at Kaipara Warkworth walks ute Flats. Most of the property is steep and lovely sheltered grassy picnic spot. This is part of Mahurangi Regional Park, and has a DOC hut.

After a picnic lunch, provided by the organisers, we wandered back up hill, then took a short cut, along a sheep track through manuka scrub, arriving back just as the bus pulled up the hill.

Perfect timing!

It was an incredibly beautiful walk and we were privileged to be given access to such a lovely area.

is bordered for 3.5 kms by the Hoteo River – the longest river in Auckland, and differs from other rivers in having its source is in the flats, rather than the high country.

The Hoteo River is the natural drainage, so a variety of dams, reservoirs and springs are used to pump water to header tanks, which fill troughs for the stock.

All waterways on the farm are fenced, with planting preventing nutrient run-off. There is no sign of nitrogen or phosphate in the waterways. Poplars have been planted to stop slips and pockets of native bush fenced off.

All this hard work, by the Steve, Clare and other family members has been recognised when they won the Supreme Farm Environment Award for

the Auckland region. It was well deserved. This family is passionate about the land and it shows. It’s a credit to the five generations who have farmed it.

New Zealand. We passed an old mill, used to cut matai and kauri for the first houses on the property, and a lovely swimming hole in the river – enjoyed by many generations.

Just after mid day we arrived at a rustic little bunk room and kitchen down by the river. Here the family provided a barbeque lunch. It was a delightful place to sit and relax a while.

After a break we walked back up the hill to meet the waiting bus, and were back in Warkworth by 3pm.

Both walks were well organised, really interesting, through beautiful countryside, and with magnificent views. They are only available through the generosity of the Niccolls and Dills.

I would recommend them both if you get an opportunity to visit Warkworth in November 2019, but book fast. The walks fill up and I can understand why.

A farm walk with lunch is included this year on Ridge Top Farm in the Manawatu. This has limited numbers.

The beach walk is going the reverse way from Himatangi Beach to Foxton Beach this year, with fish and chips at Foxton Beach.

The Manawatu Striders have a guided walk around the Summerhill area with magnificent views over the Manawatu.

For the more adventurous there is a Tara Mana walk over the hills from the Tararua District to the Manawatu on the on Saturday and The Mana Tara on the Sunday going over the Tararuas another way. There will be a certificate for those who do both crossings. Good fitness is required for the ManaTara walk.

On a clear day there are magnificent views over the Rangitikei area on the Oroua Tunipo Tramp.

The beautiful Pohangina Valley is not forgotten with the Totara Reserve walk ending with a gourmet picnic lunch.

The popular Manawatu Gorge walk as well as the Tawa Walk are both included this year. With the Manawatu Gorge road being closed due to slips a bus will take walkers to the start and of course meet them at the other end.

After the walks on Saturday you have a chance to meet other walkers and friends at a restaurant for dinner, that caters for all tastes. Booking are essential.

This year the organisers have added in a guided bike ride around the outskirts of the city, including a section for e-bikes, on the Sunday morning. For more info go to: www. mwf.org.nz.

Age 15 t was a typically cloudy day in the Lake District of England. Mum and I had spent all morning tiki touring around the countryside, stopping at all the Beatrix Potter tourist sites.

The last thing to tick off our list was a walk to Little Town. If you have read Beatrix’s book, Mrs Tiggy Winkle, you will remember Little Town as the small village that Lucie came from.

We located the walk at the end of a small country lane near a little village called Grange, which isn’t too far from a larger town, Keswick.

We parked our car in an unnamed car park on the side of the road, and set off.

The walk started on a wide tar sealed road, lined with old rugged stone walls, which gradually narrowed to a rutted gravel track.

having a few whitewashed houses with gray slated roofs. The most surprising thing was when we found tearooms, which being in the middle of no where, was very random! But then, no matter where you are in England, there always seems to be tearooms!

After a good look around Little Town and even more photos, Mum and I set off again. We took another route back, though the countryside was much the same as on the way. We strolled through open green fields, enjoying the beautiful scenery of barren rolling hills and a sparkling lake in the distance.

Just before the car park, we passed by some old farm buildings called Skillgill Farm, where Beatrix painted the very first drawing in the Mrs Tiggy Winkle book. It is the scene where Lucie is talking to the kitten.

The all round leisure walk took us one and a half hours.

A winter tramp up to Pinnacle Ridge

The Wednesday morning started with a good frost in mid winter as 28 hardy trampers from the Manawatu Tramping & Ski Club headed out from Holdsworth Car Park, just south of Masterton in the Wairarapa., to head for Pinnacle Ridge.

Just before the first bridge we headed off on a track along the true left of the Atiwhakatu River.

This is a treasure of a track with a pretty 30 minute river sidling over roots, mud and through a stream.

opposite Donnelly Flat. The next 350m in altitude are indeed steep but the bush is beautiful with large rimu, beech and matai. The mosses and ferns are prolific - a true trampers track!

The track then eases off for the last half hour until we finally step out of the bush into a clearing on top of Pinnacle Ridge (877m).

Snow covers this point and the snowy mountain tops of Holdsworth, Jumbo, Three kings and Peggy’s peak spread out on the other side of the valley.

We could also see Powell, Jumbo and Cattle Ridge huts. A cool breeze kept us alert, with temps sitting around three degrees, minus chill factor.

Auckland Short Walk

New future for Short Walks in Auckland

As many of you may realise, I moved to Hawkes Bay just over three years ago, to retire with my husband. I have kept the Short Walks in Auckland project going, but because I am remote, I am now finding it impossible to keep routes up-todate, find new ones and take the project up to the next level.

Happily, I have found the perfect person to take on the mission. Richard Wagener is an enthusiastic walker/runner and already documents walks on a website. I am leaving the project in safe hands. You will still be able to purchase the current walk brochures and books. However, Richard has plans to enrich that offering, to create an exciting new future for Short Walks in Auckland.

This project began in 2011. My friend Grace was the walk creator – with her knowledge of Auckland, she could “see” circular routes, and then it was up to me to map out, photograph, research and document the routes.

At first, I relied upon my voice recorder and Google maps but then with the advancement of technology, the smart phone became a best friend and I was able to track our route.

The best fun was when we were both pleasantly surprised by what there was to see. Beautiful wetlands, views and bush kept us inspired to explore more.

With over 100 walking routes, it is too difficult to say what our favourite walks are because of the diversity and uniqueness of each locality. I will leave it you to decide what your favourites are.

My two children were at high school age in 2011 when this project started, and unfortunately missed out on the discoveries. A highlight for me was when our daughter was studying Occupational Therapy at AUT, as she had a project that required two walks to be mapped out locally. I was very happy to help.

The last seven years of Short Walks in Auckland have been very rewarding. It was encouraging to get an email from The Women’s Bookshop in Ponsonby asking to meet me and then supplying them with our books. It was exciting to put together a bunch of walks for the University of Auckland

Recreation Manager as well as having a common goal with Sports Waitakere.

I was contacted by Frank Goldingham who gave me the opportunity to make regular contributions to the Walking New Zealand magazine. Every two months one of our walks was printed in the beautifully presented, richly coloured monthly magazine, with walks from not only New Zealand, but all around the world. Our walks reached even more people over the years. Thank you to everyone who has done a Short Walk in Auckland. Your support has been very much appreciated.

Now it’s time for fresh eyes and renewed energy.
