Walking the length of New Zealand Sarah Clifford founder of Building Bridges Community Support plans to walk the length of the country in 61 Days to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation and Building Bridges Community Support to raise awareness of mental illness.

“I believe no child, teenager, adult should be left behind while suffering from a mental illness. No family should have to wonder why us? No person should have to wonder why me? Everyone should be made aware of mental illness and not have to be afraid to speak up,” says Sarah “The stigma and discrimination of mental illness needs to stop.

I am doing this challenge as I believe I can make a difference and be the change the New Zealand needs to erase the stigma”, says Sarah Her planned route starts on the 1st February 2017.at Bluff and ends in Cape Reinga on April 1 2017

Leave seals alone – they’re just resting The Department of Conservation (DOC) is starting to receive an influx of calls from the public concerned about the welfare of seals on the East Coast.

East Coast Operations Manager, John Lucas says a leopard seal, at Kopututea Beach (Gisborne) recently, was a reminder not to go near a seal. “The seal was very tired and resting on an access-way to the beach. To ensure the seal was not disturbed, and public safety, staff placed signs and continued to monitor the seal.”

“I must stress the importance of keeping your distance and ensuring dogs are on a leash” he said.

“It is not unusual for seals to be seen at this time of the year.

Between August to November newly-weaned fur seal pups and juveniles come ashore, but it’s just a resting up period for them before they head out to sea again in search of food.”

“The seals may look distressed and scrawny and display signs of sneezing, coughing and have weepy eyes, but that’s just natural for them and they really don’t need any human intervention. They will return to the water and swim merrily away as soon as they feel up to it.”

Beercycling announces the “Oregon Beerway” Tour

Fresh off their 6th year “Getting you from Pint A to Pint B” around Europe, Portland-based Beercycling is proud to announce an expansion into the US. The new Oregon Beerway tour will kick off in May 2017, featuring 5-days and 4-nights cycling between Portland and Hood River.

Riders will visit one or two breweries a day, stay at comfortable hotels adjacent to the breweries, and have the assistance of a support vehicle as they cycle along the historic Columbia River Gorge on some of the most scenic bike trails in the state.

The tour is open to cyclists of all skill levels, with rides averaging around 24 miles a day.

Registration includes bike rentals, hotel accommodation, daily breakfast, lunch, snacks, brewery tours, vehicle support during the tour, passenger shuttle from the end point back to Portland, and best of all lots of beer samples.

The three 2017 tour departures will be led by Beercycling founder Evan Cohan.

A new walk is due to open in Kangaroo Island, South Australia in October.

The five-day Island Wilderness Trail, built and managed by the Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR), stretches 66km from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre to Kelly Hill Caves with campsites along the way.

Nature’s secrets are waiting to be discovered at every step of the 66 kilometre five-day trek, with the trail weaving its way through the most botanically unique area in all of South Australia before reaching the rugged, remote and spectacular coastline of the Southern Ocean.

The unimaginable beauty of this part of the world has to be seen to be believed.

There are no transfers available to the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre yet but Sealink South Australia is currently reviewing tour package options including the Wilderness Trail.

Walk this way with the Maria Island Walk in Tasmania

The Maria Island Walk is now offering visitors a variety of opportunities to explore this beautiful destination off the east coast of Tasmania.

Abrolhos Islands to become national park

Located 60 kilometres off the coast of Geraldton, the Abrolhos Islands are set to become the newest national park in Australia.

The islands comprise a group of more than 120 coral cays that lie across 100 kilometres of the Indian Ocean. Creating a platform for further tourism development, there are plans to introduce floating hotels, campsites and more diving and sightseeing tours to the coastal paradise.

Famous for its coral reef systems, the Abrolhos Islands is also home to the Batavia shipwreck which was carrying gold, silver and 180 people in the 1600s.

Labour Day will be the first chance to drive the Acheron Road through Molesworth Station as the road was closed for the season last April.

The Acheron Road through the historic high country station will be open to the public for nearly five months from Labour Weekend last year and will close for the 2016/17 season in April 2017.

The Acheron Road, from Cob Cottage in the north of M o l e s w o r t h St a t i o n t o Acheron Accommodation House in the south, is a popular alternate driving and cycling route between Blenheim and Hanmer.

The road provides access to the amazing scener y and landscapes of Molesworth.

For the more active it provides opportunities for fishing, walking, mountain biking, hunting, tramping and even paragliding.

The previous road opening season has seen a number of special interest groups travel the road including members of the Indian Motorcycle Club and a group of vintage tractor enthusiasts.

Farming operations such as the autumn muster were the main use of the road until the winter weather made it difficult to traverse and at times impassable.

Whakanewha Regional Park

Now walkers can enjoy walking the upgraded track steps to the Cascades waterfalls in Whakanewha Regional Park on Waiheke Island.

Just completed, are over two hundred easy gradient steps on the park’s main access Central Track making the descent, and ascent, much easier for walkers.

The Cascades waterfalls are deep in the centre of Waiheke’s forest park

where the Cascades Stream works its way from the hills to the valley. The Cascades is a series of tumbling falls over large rocks and ponds edged by nikau grove, punga and ferns surrounded by mature canopy trees.

Two hundred steps added to

walk down to the Cascades like being in a Karl Maughan painting of vibrant fresh green.

The Cascades are a drawcard for walkers. Waiheke translates as cascading water and its thought that these falls may have been a reason for that the name.

The Cascades stream originates from the high point on the island working its way down through the valley to the wetlands and ultimately to the shore at Whakanewha Bay (Rocky Bay).

walk at Batch Winery, which is located adjacent to the Regional Park and the highest vineyard on the Waiheke Island.

From the winery carpark there is a 45 minute loop walk to the Cascades via the Central Track, Cascades Loop then following the stream on the Mamuka Track to arrive at the far edge of the vineyard beside Waiheke airfield. ( sign posted).

The winery runs a free courtesy bus from Matiatia ferry terminal to the winery during opening hours.

Walkers can catch the bus, enjoy a good walk with bush and birdlife experience then stop off for a wine tasting, lunch and sunset dining afterwards before catching the bus back to the ferry.

The Batch bus needs to be booked so the driver knows you are arriving at Matiaitia. Booking is essential for all groups planning a day out with walk, Above: A babbling brook.

Starting at the Central Track gate opposite the winery carpark the wide bush fringed track is downhill. Central Track has been upgraded and improved with a series of excellent gradient steps. The Cascade loop leads off to the left with sign posts.

Close to the waterfalls the track is also improved with board walks.

Whakanewha Regional Park is one of Auckland Council’s 22 regional parks. It was purchased for recreation and conservation development in 1993.

Te Aru Hura, the Waiheke Island continuous 100km walking route winds through the forest park including the Cascades waterfalls and Cascade loop track. Walkers on a longer excursion can enjoy this section of the track in Whakanewha Regional Park with a stop off at Batch Winery along the way.

The new steps and the boardwalk beside the Cascades allow improved access to the beautiful Cascades Loop within the park. The steps also add a great step class addition to any walk in the park. Dogs are permitted on a lead in some areas of the Whakanewha Regional Park.

I don’t usually start a walk at a tomb. But the grave of Dickie Barrett, British seaman and whaler, seemed an appropriate starting point for New Plymouth’s Coastal Walkway which runs for 7kms along the By Judith Doyle wild Taranaki coastline that Barrett came to know only too well.

He went to sea aged 16 and later became an influential trader in New Plymouth who helped negotiate initial land purchases in the area. He died in 1847 after a whaling accident.

iver walks Plymouth’s port. Sea mist softens the 153metre-high triangular outline of Paritutu Rock and the Christmas-pudding shape of the Sugar Loaf islands.

Massive boulders form a wide border between sea and walkway, sometimes topped by driftwood in twisted nightmare shapes.

After walking past a children’s play area and then a large aquatic centre, I reach Len Lye’s swaying red wind wand. It rises 48metres on the waterfront, announcing that New Plymouth

is now proud to be home to the works of the celebrated sculptor/film-maker Len Lye. He was born in Christchurch but worked mainly in London and New York.

It’s nearly an hour’s walk from Dickie Barrett’s grave to the Len Lye’s wind wand.

Now joined by my Wellington friend, the two of us walk along the stretch which borders the central city area and is protected by a sturdy seawall, built to keep the Tasman Sea at bay. The walkway is wide and flat.

We meet a few cyclists, the odd skater, runners, walkers — some with dogs — and even a group of four on mobility scooters at one point.

Soon high cliffs replace the man-

made seawall and we’re approaching Te Henui Stream, spanned by a pedestrian bridge. There are surf clubrooms here as national and international surfing competitions are held at Fitzroy Beach.

Later we pass a motor camp and a golf course. We walk about 2kms beside the wide black sands until we reach the estuary of the Waiwhakaiho River.

Mist hovers round the estuary mouth. Its wide pebbly foreshore is a meeting place for hundreds of seagulls.

Rewa Bridge. Its soaring curving arches suggest — what? A bleached whale skeleton? Breaking surf?

It’s a poem of a bridge, 83kms in length, and starkly white. But the classic view of these arches framing snow-topped Mt Taranaki — seen on many postcards and promotional material — is denied us. Mt Taranaki is hiding in cloud!

The Coastal Walkway continues another 4.7kms to Bell Block beach but we decide to return at this point via the still waters of Lake Rotomanu and then through some suburban streets, to the suburb of Fitzroy.

Here we wait at a bus stop for a bus that never comes and finally, after nearly an hour, we’re rescued by a local woman who drives us back to the city centre.

At Te Henui Stream on the Coastal Walkway, I had noticed that there’s a river walk starting at the bridge across the stream. It winds inland for 5.9kms and can be accessed at several city points.

I decide to join it at the junction of Devon Street East and Watson Street.

It’s the perfect foil for the Coastal Walkway. It’s quiet and peaceful with noisy surf replaced by quiet stretches of water which occasionally ripples over river boulders.

On a riverside path, mostly encased in greenery, you dip under a road bridge at times or walk through a tunnel under a street. A couple of times you cross the stream on pedestrian bridges.

Foliage is a mixture on the Spring day I walked it, with brilliant rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and prunus blossom illuminating the changing green of our native trees.

The pathway skirts three historic pa sites and two little cemeteries — never far from the river.

It also passes close to Te Kainga Marire which is the only private native garden in New Zealand to be rated as a Garden of International Significance.

(Of course, New Plymouth is famous for its gardens — Hollard, Tupare, Pukekura Park, Pukeiti, to name the best known — but that’s another story). www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

A few cyclists are enjoying the walkway and plenty of dogs are taking their owners for a walk — one trio having an excited dip in the river en route, not waiting for the few swimming holes that exist at various points.

After more than an hour’s very pleasant meander, I leave the walkway

(it continues another 1.5kms) at Cumberland Street and walk through suburban streets to the local shops where I decide to give up on the buses this time and take a taxi back to the city.

he discovery of so many inviting walks in the Marlborough Sounds was a surprise on our week’s cruise on the motor vessel Affinity.

Those days in late March were sunny and calm (bar one). The eight of us on board all enjoyed walking, so skipper Brian would either moor and take us ashore on a rubber dingy or tie up at a jetty.

He would then cruise up the coast and wait for us, in a bay where our walk ended. A few of these walks are only accessible by boat. result is a coastal walk that’s mainly flat. (Flattish walks are distinctly rare in this region of steep hills and plunging valleys). Official time: 3½ hours.

Jacob’s Bay to Fairy Bay, in Pelorus Sound, is another coastal walk we greatly enjoyed. Shorter and hillier than Archer’s, it is only accessible by boat. Umbrella-like ferns are a frilly feature of this walk. So, unexpectedly, was a large beech trunk that had fallen right across the track.

Henry Dillon Bell (1851—1936) who was the first New Zealand-born Prime Minister of New Zealand. He was born in Nelson.

The bush gets denser after Dillon Point with gorgeous glimpses of blue water through the trees. Black beech is prominent again and so are bursts of rata.

Hidden walks in the Marlborough Sounds

Motuara Island, at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, is a birdwatching walk. Near Ship Cove (Capt Cook’s favorite spot in the Pacific), the island is a Department of Conservation reserve – no holiday baches here.

Soon after we start climbing up, we pause at a stream and watch grey warblers, parakeets and fantails splashing in the water.

At the top is a cairn that marks the spot where Captain Cook took possession of the mainland in the name of King George III, naming the inlet after Queen Charlotte.

Coming down, we see little blue penguins in their nesting boxes and keep our eyes out for the saddlebacks that have been re-introduced here.

The Queen Charlotte Walkway stretches all along this peninsula from Ship Cove to Anakiwa and we land at various points and walk a stretch of it. One was from Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove in Endeavour Inlet -- a 4-hour walk.

Near the start, at Miners Camp, we pass a little honesty stall with various handy camping bits and pieces for sale for the campers who stay here.

Walk (two hours) the hum of wasps was a persistent background to the birdsong (as it was on most of the walks, though not at Motuara Island) and we noticed many rat and possum baits alongside the track.

There were majestic rimu at times, kamahi bushes amongst the beech trees and ponga arching over the track.

Group returns to

After almost two years, the Wednesday Wilderness Wanderers return to the Makahika Track.

August 31st was a bright and pleasant day worthy of the spring that was due to officially spring the following day.

Thirty plus trampers started from the Tararua Forest Park entrance reached via Gladstone Road to walk the Makahika track as a walk-in, walk-out.

About half made it to the picnic table lookout or beyond for lunch and a third chose to turn at the first look-out.

A count of token leaves clutched to a bosom, confirmed that, to reach either of the look-outs involved 29 stream and river crossings in each direction.

In addition to wet crossings there were many more muddy sections so boots became waterlogged and dry feet a memory.

In spite of these tribulations and a few (temporarily) lost souls, this was well enjoyed tramp. The quality of the bush in the river valley was outstanding.

We will return sooner next time!

Top DOC huts for the first timer It’s always a great time to start planning your first true Kiwi hut experience. All of these huts are short walks (under four hours to walk to).

The Department of Conservation (DOC) looks after over 950 huts of all shapes and sizes so we asked some of our staff for their experiences and picks, particularly huts suitable for first time trampers. Take a look:

Powell Hut is extremely popular and the fastest way to the top of the Tararua Ranges in Tararua Forest Park.

The spectacular views are only a 1.5 hour drive from Wellington, easily accessed by Holdsworth Road near Masterton.

Further north of Wellington, “Rangiwahia Hut is quite cool.” Says Jack Mace, National Advisor for Operations.

“It’s about a three hour drive from Wellington and a two hour walk to the hut. The track up is great, an easy benched track, with a beautiful arched bridge near the top.

On a good day you will get spectacular views of Ruapehu and the Rangitikei.”

The near new Atiwhakatu Hut is an easy walk from Holdsworth Road. It’s popular as part of the beautiful Jumbo Circuit - a two to three day tramp involving a climb through beech-podocarp forest to some of the best alpine views in the Tararua Forest Park.

There are a couple of trails to choose from to get to the historic Packhorse Hut. The hut was planned as part of a series of ‘rest houses’ for those journeying between Christchurch to Akaroa. The shortest walk to get there takes about an hour 20.

Great Barrier’s Kaiaraara Hut offers rustic charm. The track has a combination of easy walking tracks, boardwalks, steep climbs, stairways and bridges, and is suitable for reasonably fit beginners or experienced trampers.

Depending on your fitness level and how you plan to walk it, the Aotea/Great Barrier Island tracks can be completed in two days and one night, or three days and two nights.

Paekakariki Escarpment Track has commanding views - but not for the faint-hearted

The Paekakariki Escarpment Track, opened early this year, dubbed the ‘Stairway To Heaven’, near Wellington offers walkers commanding views of the Kapiti Coast, Kapiti Island and the distant Marlborough Sounds This new track is part of Te Araroa Trail, a 3,000 kilometre long walk that takes in some of the best scenery around the country.

Generally walked from north to south, the new Paekakariki Escarpment Track undulates along some open areas with small pockets of coastal bush.

Local community conservation group Ngā Uruora has been busy with native planting, weeding and pest control along the 10 kilometre track.

Conveniently placed along the length of the track are seating and fantastic information panels, plus very cool rustic distance markers.

After a couple of kilometres you will quickly understand why it is called the ‘Stairway to Heaven’. The track abruptly climbs up with a series of zigzag staircases. These are not for the faint of heart – they’re narrow and very steep.

However, the best way to get up the hill is to go straight up! Ideally someone is coming the opposite way giving you a great excuse to stop and let them past while you (quietly) catch your breath.

The track has two very different halves. The first (walking south) is steep and climbs up to the high point of 220 metres to open farmland. This is a great spot to have a break and enjoy the fantastic view, and look down on the cars and trains rushing past below.

Te Araroa Trail

Kapiti Island dominates the view to the north and to the south the bumps of the Marlborough Sounds can be spotted often with a thin line of white clouds.

The second half is all downhill!

It’s still steep and if you suffer from a fear of heights you may want to take it easy. Once past the staircases, you’ll come across the first of two swing bridges crossing over steep bush-filled gullies. They offer a great view of the surrounding hill sides and a bird’s eye view of the bush canopy.

Between the two bridges you’ll find one of the largest remaining kohekohe forests on the Kapiti Coast.

The shade is a welcome relief if you’re out on a hot day, because most of the track is out in the open. Kohekohe is an important food source for nectareating birds, such as tūī and korimako/bellbirds. The second bridge is similar to the first, but is a lot closer to the railway tracks and tunnels – if you’re lucky you can catch glimpses of the trains speeding past.

At this stage you are almost done and the track is similar to the start as it undulates for the last couple of kilometres to finish nice and close to the Pukerua Bay train station.

For those out enjoying the new track it is a quick ten minute train ride back to Paekakariki – and an ice cream!

Blue skies, sunshine, sandflies and

the Heaphy Track

Four years ago I attempted to cycle the Heaphy Track in June.

The weather was less than ideal. A strong cold front had passed through with snow down to low levels on the track. We aborted our mission at Perry Saddle Hut rode back to Brown Hut road end and went home.

Fast forward to May 2016. Sunshine, blue skies and warm evenings were the flavour of the second attempt. To say I was excited to get back and complete this track is a slight understatement. Been an avid mountain biker the Heaphy Track is a “must do”!

The Heaphy can be ridden from 1st May to 30th September. The preferred direction is to start at Brown Hut on the Golden Bay side and finish at KoAbove: Good morning from Gouland Downs. Below: Gunner Bridge and River.

You can spend two to three nights on the track. We chose two nights, the first at Perry Saddle Hut and then Heaphy Hut.

Day One

Day one saw us underway just after noon. Brown Hut is only a few minutes along from the car park and sits on a clearing alongside the Brown River. The track climbs up from Brown Hut to Perry Saddle Hut and winds up through the bush. Through gaps in the trees the muddy-coloured Aorere River can be seen far below.

It took us four hours to reach Perry Saddle Hut. We stopped often to enjoy the view, took photos and had some afternoon tea. It is also well worth checking out the view at Flanagans corner lookout.

The nearby peaks of the Gouland Range can be spotted in the west, including the appropriately named Mt Inaccessible. The Dragons Teeth and Mt Anatoki dominates the sky line to the east.

It’s a quick 30 minute ride onto the Perry Saddle Hut from the lookout.

Coming through last time there was two feet of snow. It was dark, cold and raining, Perry Saddle Hut was a welcome relief.

We had been pushing our bikes from the Aorere shelter. This time it was hot, sunny and a pleasant evening. The difference in conditions couldn’t have been more opposite.

It was a warm night with kiwi calling. After a pleasant sleep we were more than ready to head towards the mild West Coast.

Day Two

We were up early and off by 8am.

Perry Saddle creek runs alongside the track before it branches northwards.

The track heads on towards Gouland Downs. At 8.30am a fine and crisp autumn morning is amazing. Gouland Downs is framed by the Slate Range in the north, Tubman Range in the south and the Gouland Range in the west.

The sun highlights the tussock tops and the surrounding peaks. The track drops and rises gently towards Gouland Downs Hut which is a great spot for early morning tea. Gouland Downs Hut and Saxon Hut are great examples of original backcountry huts.

to cross. One named Big River! They do have swing bridges but we found it much easy to ford the river. Saxon Hut is ideal for second morning tea. It is a popular spot for overnight trampers and an ideal place to see and hear kiwi. New Zealand’s large carnivorous land snail (Powelliphanta) can also be spotted here after dark.

Not long after leaving Saxon Hut the track climbs out of the Downs towards the southern side of Mt Teddy.

The first views of the West Coast can be seen from here. A gentle downhill brings you to James MacKay Hut. Explorer James MacKay discovered the pass between the Aorere and Heaphy Valleys in 1858.

The downhill section from James Mackay hut to Lewis is a highlight.

The track drops down through giant forest with the brown waters of the Heaphy River far below. Before you know it you arrive at Lewis hut

beaches. Heaphy, Twenty Minute, Nettle, Twin, Koura, Big Rock and finally Scotts beach. The occasional bike push through the sand slows you down for a bit. Large rivers are forded on newly built bike friendly bridges. A few rocky bluffs are ridden beneath. These can be a bit rough so walking could be safer. Finally you climb steeply up the Kohaihai Bluff. The southern finishing point is alongside the Kohaihai River. Location wise it is like Heaphy Hut, a great way to finish.

The Heaphy Track is a spectacular multi day bike ride. A good level of fitness and technical skills are required. Some sections are narrow with steep drop offs and the track does get a bit rough especially on the West Coast.

Lewis hut sits on a nice sunny clearing alongside the Lewis River. It is only a few minutes from the Heaphy River and Lewis River confluence.

Another quick ride alongside the Heaphy River brings you to the scenic Heaphy Hut. Walkers and bikers coming from the Nelson side this is usually the last night on the track.

It is a stunning location, with views of the Heaphy River battling to flow into the ocean. Golden sand beaches and thousands of nikau palms fill the edges of the track.

For me, Heaphy Hut was the highlight of an already perfect two days. The location makes this spot a place to remember. The sun setting behind a wild frothing West Coast beach is a lasting impression.

English Coast to Coast - named among the world’s best walks

Walking is a joy in the United Kindom with a choice of over 224,000 kilometres of a comprehensive network of public “Rights of Way”, footpaths, minor roads, permissive paths and access land in England and Wales.

They have been used for centuries and are freely available to be walked today. Many walkers plan their weekend and holiday “treks” using ordinance survey maps, where these are clearly marked.

If you are ever contemplating a walking holiday in England, there is one walk that I can thoroughly recommend called the “Coast to Coast” (C2C).

Devised by the Yorkshireman Alfred Wainwright in 1972, it’s a 310 km walk in the north of England, described in his book A Coast to Coast Walk in 1973.

It’s an unofficial route, and largely unsignposted, that he devised to cross England meandering west to east through three of the finest National Parks that England can offer - The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales and The North Yorkshire Moors.

Each one offers a totally different and unique walking experience.

He divided the walk into twelve

sections that he thought people could comfortably manage in a day and also arrive at a suitable place for an overnight stay and/or to purchase food.

The walk usually starts in the west so that the prevailing wind and rain, is generally on your back and not in your face. It begins at St Bees, on the shores of the Irish Sea in Cumbria, and finishes at Robin Hood’s Bay, on the shores of the North Sea, in Yorkshire 12 – 13 days later.

It has been named among the world’s best walks and in one review was designated as the second-best in the world, beaten only by our own Milford Track in South Island.

Before moving to New Zealand I had walked many of England and Scotland’s long-distance walks including the Pennine Way, The West Highland Way, The Great Glen Way, the South Downs Way and parts of the grand South West Coast Walk.

body hasn’t had a chance to get “trailhardened” yet.

However, it is staggeringly beautiful with lakes, glinting like scattered diamonds, surrounded by rugged green hills, grazed by sheep.

Little stone-built villages are cosily tucked away down sleepy valleys and streams zigzag down from hill tops, cascading over terraced rocks in a happy tumble towards the lakes.

Everything that evokes the traditional English countryside is here and for that reason it is very popular with an estimated 16 million visitors every year.

Lakeland, as it is also sometimes known, has been the home to a number of famous people including the 19th century romantic poets including Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats, Robert Southey and William Wordsworth whose poem “I wandered lonely as a cloud” was inspired by daffodils growing along the shores of Ullswater.

Potter who wrote “The Tales of Peter Rabbit” lived at “Hill Top Farm” in Near Sawrey near Esthwaite Water.

From the Lake District the trail crosses into Westmorland, a high plateau area consisting of limestone pavement. This stretch is a 32 km tract of land between Shap and Kirkby Stephen, at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.

It has verdant springy turf that is

Ancient Britons had a liking for this part of Westmorland as settlements, villages, burial mounds, stone circles and tumuli can be easily found in abundance here.

T h e Yo r k s h i r e D a l e s w e r e designated as a National Park in 1954 and has to be one of the most photographed and filmed areas of

England.

Typifying rural England with stone-walled fields strewn with an abundance of joyful wildflowers in spring; attractive stone barns with their split stone rooves; delightful villages with pretty cottage gardens; wide valleys curved gently by the grinding of long-gone glaciers; purple heather-strewn hilltops wild and

rugged; crystal clear, slow-moving rivers snaking through fields and sheltering woods.

Here the C2C follows Swaledale and there is a choice of an upland or lowland route depending on the time of year.

The lowland path is preferred in winter when it is wet, cold and misty, and follows the banks of the River Swale.

The upland route is usually used in the summer when conditions are more favourable. It is more challenging but does go past many relics of a rich industrial past with abandoned lead mines, old smelt mills and deserted stone houses.

Cleveland Hills, the trail crosses the Vale of Mowbray.

This 38 km stretch is a flat, gentle walking tract with the scenery 100% rural. No stone walls bounding wildflower strewn meadows here but clipped hedgerows surrounding fields of wheat and barley. Compared with the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales visibility here is limited to just the next hedgerow as you amble through.

T h e N o r t h Yo r k s h i r e M o o r s National Park, a National Park since 1952, stretches for 48 km before it reaches the North Sea. Three quarters of the world’s heather moorland is to be found in Britain and this is by far the largest portion.

This open country is ideal for walking and is unenclosed, uninhabited, with no disturbing noise, save that of the curlews’ call, no industry and no traffic, just the tender hum of Mother Nature being Mother Nature.

There is ancient history here too as you walk along a paved Roman Road.

hills were covered in woodland. There are cairns and earthworks, barrows and burial mounds that remind us of their existence here and can still be seen today.

their mark, some village names have Norse and Danish origins.

Once the sea is finally reached there is still a 6 km coastal path that will take you along steep cliffs into the small fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay, an unusual name for a Yorkshire village.

Legend has it that Robin Hood encountered French pirates here who were pillaging the fisherman’s boats, however, they surrendered to him and he gave back the loot to the poor people. Hence the name.

Once walkers have reached the village they take the final few steps down a steep, winding cobbled street to the beach.

Here, to the amazement of bewildered tourists, they walk into the North Sea to let it wash over their boots. The pebble that was collected off the beach at St Bees, and carried across the country, is then thrown into the sea.

Once these two rituals have been observed the next call is into “Wainwrights’ Bar” at the Bay Hotel to sign the C2C register and prove that you’ve arrived and completed the 320 km challenge. Finally, a well-earned pint of ale is ordered and some fish and chips.

Seeking gold in Central Otago — a short walk in history

now lay deep on the surrounding ranges, and we were on our way from Ranfurly to St Bathans on a bright, sunny and crisp autumn day.

At Oturehua we’d stopped to look into the old Gilchrist’s store and have a coffee at the tavern.

“Are there any walks in this area?” we asked our host. “Sure, today would be a good time to walk to the old gold mine just back up the road. Just watch the slippery bits”.

It sounded like something different so we soon located the small sign to a track leading across the rail trail.

We’d passed by here ourselves on a hot day a few years ago, probably thinking of a cool drink and our physical contact with the saddle rather than gold in the hills.

The very informative sign told us that the Golden Progress mine site is a 20 minute return walk. But we needed a lot more time than that to inspect the relics and to read all the display boards that detail the history and explain what remains.

This quartz reef at the northern end of the Ida Valley was being prospected back in 1863 by miners keen enough to live under canvas, sleeping on the ground through the harsh winters.

Tunnels and shafts were extended in 1928 with better technology, but by the look of the restored miner’s cottage, life was far from luxurious.

By 1936 the reef was exhausted and the mine was closed. The map on a sign showed us where the mine manager and his family lived, and where the line of stone cottages and the pub were located.

The track led up the valley past the

site of the small village and piles of tailings to the poppet head above the mine shaft, and a boiler to power the steam engine that raised the heavy, hand-hewed load of ore up the 45m deep shaft.

The big wheels at the top of the wooden tower have rested a long time since they turned purposely. There is only one other such poppet head left in New Zealand, at Reefton.

From here, the track loops along the

old tramway that once look the ore to the stamper. By climbing up the next ridge, we had an extensive view out over the farmland of the Maniototo to the snow-covered ranges.

It was only a short drive from Oturehua to St Bathans, with time for a walk round the loop track at Blue Lake while there was still enough light.

Ridge Top Farm Walk

Whether you’re a townie, a country person or an overseas tourist, walking over the tracks at Ridge Top Farm, near Feilding in the Rangitikei District offers, not only an authentic Kiwi farm experience, but also the unique experience of glamping (glamorous camping) accommodation.

This fully catered New Zealand walking adventure over private farmland has two different walks of varying distances.

Hosts, Sarah and Angus Gilbertson and their young family, Tom, George and Pippa, farm at Tapuae, a 1500-acre sheep and beef farm owned in the Gilbertson family for three generations.

“We cater to everyone, from families, groups of friends holidaying together to groups of couples seeking a peaceful retreat plus international tourists looking for adventure,” says Sarah, who creates all the delicious food.

The Mountain View loop is a 10.5km walk.

After a hearty country breakfast,

a packed lunch is delivered to the glamping site. Walkers then head off in a North-West direction up onto the Ridge to enjoy spectacular views of Mt Egmont and Mt Ruapehu.

From there it’s downhill, across a small creek before a meandering stroll across rolling farmland. “There’s plenty of sheep and cattle to keep an eye on you along the way – they are all friendly, of course,” says Sarah.

From here it’s a climb back onto the Ridge before reaching the designated lunch spot: Nolan’s Hutt. Because of its splendid location (approximately 500metres above sea level) walkers can eat, rest and enjoy the 360 degree views of Kapiti Island, Mt Egmont, Mt Ruapehu and the Ruahine Ranges. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

New Zealand Walk

Back in the early 1900’s, when access was mainly via horseback and supplies were brought in on packhorses, Nolan’s Hutt was used as accommodation for musterers and scrub cutters There was no power in the hut and all cooking and heating was done on the coal range that remains in the hut today.

After lunch, the walk continues along the Ridge with more spectacular

farmland and mountain views, before coming back down onto the road, along the grass airstrip (used for top dressing) and back to the campsite.

Before a 3-course evening meal is delivered, guests have time to relax and can choose between a soak in the twin outdoor bath tubs, toasting marshmallows over an open fire or drinks and nibbles in the outdoor kitchen area.

That’s the biggest decision you’ll have to make all weekend!

The next day’s walk is the 5km Farmland Loop. This 1.5 hour walk starts in a south- east direction with rolling hills and views of the Ruahine Ranges, Feilding, Palmerston North City and the Manawatu Windmills.

It then drops back down along the rejuvenating wetland which walkers can meander along before arriving back at the campsite to collect their packed lunch before making the journey home. www.ridgetopfarmwalk.virb.com

Rimutaka Rail Trail Run and Walk 21km, 14km & 7km 12th November 2016

This is a fun run & walk over the Rimutaka Rail trail through the Rimutaka Ranges. All courses are predominately off--road. road. The rail trail rises from 254m above sea level at the start, along a steady gradient <1 in 40 until the bridge at Ladle Bend. Just past the 14k turnaro turnaround (7k) point the course takes a left turn onto the steeper and picturesque Back Road section.

The course continues to loop around and then drops down onto the Incline Track on the return journey. This is a scenic and historic route that can be negotiated by any reasonably fit person.
