made, individually packaged meals is increasing, climateconscious consumers are becoming aware of the need for sustainable, plastic-free packaging solutions. As a result, fibrebased alternatives to plastic are more in demand than ever before.

“The high number of single-person households and the increased quality and variety of ready-made food is changing consumer behaviour. We have every reason to believe this will continue into the future,” says Matthias Zimmermann, Walki’s Business Line Manager for Barrier Board.

and easy to recycle.

The ovenable tray; the mainstay of an easy dinner, is gaining popularity.

We eat everything from frozen food to bakery items from trays. They used to be largely made from aluminium or plastics, but that is changing fast. It is expected that the European Union will announce a revision to the 1994 Packaging Directive that may require all plastic packaging to be reusable or recyclable by 2030.

Oven-proof

Walki is eager to support the transition away from aluminium and plastic-based towards fibre-based alternatives.

“Trays are easy for food manufacturers to fill, transport, and store. They also make it simple for consumers to prepare their meals – using either a microwave or a conventional oven. Once the food is ready, the tray can be even used as a plate, further adding to the overall convenience of the experience,” says Zimmerman.

Trays are suitable for a wide variety of applications including frozen or chilled ready-made meals, such as fish and baked goods.

Walki’s fibre-based solutions for ovenable trays make it possible to heat the tray up to 60 minutes in a conventional oven. No need for aluminium trays to get a sizzling hot lasagne to the dinner table.

The solutions are entirely PET free and easy to recycle, while still delivering all the features needed for ovenable food trays. Made from renewable fibre, barrier materials are kept to a minimum to maximise recyclability.

Dispersion on offer

Walki also offers dispersion-coated trays, which are primarily used for take-away or on-the-go products. Dispersion-coated materials are compostable and easier to recycle, since there is no need to separate the coating from the base material. Dispersion coating can be used on almost all board and paper types.

“All Walki’s trays are tailor made in close collaboration with the individual food producers and retailers while paying close attention to consumers’ wishes”, says Matthias Zimmerman.
