Welcome to the

World Folkfest

The World Folkfest in Springville, Utah, invites the public to join its celebration of world cultures, music and dance when visitors from around the globe present five evening performances July 29-Aug. 2, 2014.

Folk dancers and musicians from Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, France, Indonesia, Lithuania, Sierra Leone and Taiwan are expected to participate in the 2014 World Folkfest.

They will be joined by the Rocky Mountain Express clogging team and Native American performing group Morning Star, who will both represent the United States, and Pacific Generation, who will represent the island cultures of the Pacific Ocean.

The week-long festival will also include a free street dance on Monday, July 28, where the public can learn simple folk dances from the Folkfest’s international visitors with accompaniment by live musicians.

With its first performances held in 1986, the World Folkfest has grown to become one of the most prominent festivals of folk dance and music in the United States. In the tradition of popular European folk dance festivals that attract thousands of visitors, the World Folkfest annually invites talented folk dance troupes from around the world to travel to Springville and showcase their cultures through the exciting and vibrant medium of folk dance.

The groups perform in beautifully crafted costumes of their homeland and to music provided by live musicians playing unique traditional instruments. The performers pay their own expenses to travel to the Folkfest, underlining their eagerness to share their cultures with the people of Utah. While here, the performers stay with volunteer host families in the Utah County area, providing local families with a unique opportunity to experience another culture first-hand. All groups attending this year’s Folkfest will perform during each evening performance, giving audiences a trip around the world in one night.

Performances will begin at 8 p.m. on July 29, 30 and 31 and Aug. 1 and 2 at the Spring Acres Arts Park outdoor amphitheater, 700 S. 1300 East, Springville, Utah. The Arts Park will open each night at 6 p.m. with a variety of food and craft

booths available to audience members before the show. Preshow entertainment will begin at 7:15 p.m. Some seating is available at the Arts Park, but audience members can also bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.

Admission is $10 for adults; $8 for students, military members and senior citizens; $5 for children ages 3 to 12; and free for children under 3. Groups of 10 or more may purchase tickets for $6 each. A family pass is available for $30. Tickets can be purchased at the gate with a credit card or cash on the night of the performance. For more information, visit www. worldfolkfest.com.

For those who don’t want to miss a minute of this year’s Folkfest, World Passports (5 day pass) are available for $30 per person. The Folkfest will open with a free street dance on Monday, July 28, in the parking lot of the Springville Museum of Art, 126 E. 400 South, Springville. This family-oriented event is open to the public. Folkfest dance groups will teach simple folk dances to those attending with accompaniment by their musicians.

Host families are currently being sought to house from two to four dancers during the week of the Folkfest. Host families are asked to provide room, board and transportation to Folkfest events for their international visitors. Directions to the Arts Park

Due to the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of 400 South and 1300 East in Springville, audiences will not be able to access the Spring Acres Arts Park using that route. Those traveling to the arts park should travel east on 400 South to 400 East, then turn south and travel down 400 East to 800 South where there is a stop light. Turn east onto 800 South at the light and follow the road, which bends and becomes 900 South, to Springville High School. Turn north onto 1300 East (the high school’s LDS Seminary building is on the corner) and proceed north to the entrance to the arts park. There is a large parking lot available next to the park or patrons may park along the street.

Australia Australia The dance group Australia comes to Utah County from Perth, which is the capital and largest city in the Australian state of Western Australia. This group performs the dances of the Nyoongah nation. These dances have been passed down from generation to generation from the oldest living culture in the world. The group’s dances are performed with the didgeridoo, tapping sticks, boomerangs and vocals in the Aboriginal language. All instruments used are the instruments of the Aboriginal people. The group’s traditional costumes include headbands and body paint. The group is led by Phillip Walley-Stack, a talented musician and one of the top didgeridoo players in the world.

Bangladesh Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts The Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts is located in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, a city of about 7 million people located on the banks of the Buriganga River in central Bangladesh. It is one of the most renowned cultural institutions in the country. Academy students are taught with special care subjects such as singing, art, dance and various musical instruments. The main goal of the institution is to provide and spread cultural education to future generation of the country and to provide forums where traditional Bangladeshi culture can be shared. Opportunities are also sought for students to perform what they have learned.

Belgium ‘t Havermeulek ’t Havermeuleke was founded in 1976 by a couple of teachers at the HeiligeDrievuldigheidscollege in Leuven as a extra-curicular activity. Leuven is a city located in the Flanders region of Belgium. The group, which is named after a Flemish folk dance, provides a dancing repertoire of both traditional and newly created Flemish dances as well as a few foreign dances, which make a welcome change during the weekly rehearsals. Together with other groups from Leuven, it organizes a folk festival each year around Easter time. The group performs to live music with musicians playing instruments ranging from the accordion to Flemish bagpipes, flutes and violins. ’t Havermeuleke’s costumes are based on the country’s traditional wardrobe in the mid-19th century. They are all handmade with natural fabric and great attention to detail. The group is directed by Wim Lamens.

France La Jouvenco de Mount-Favet

La Jouvenco de Mount-Favet was founded in 1969 and is directed by Eric Peytie. It is based in Avignon, a city located in southeastern France on the banks of the Rhone River. The group presents dances depicting various aspects of French life, including the dance of the harvest, which depicts summer farmers going to their fields to reap new wheat. Others include the ballroom dances of the aristocracy and traditional military dances. Dancing was an important part of military officer training, particularly in the Joinville battalion. The costumes of La Jouvenco de Mount-Favet are reproductions of costumes worn in France in the second part of the 19th century. The costumes are very colorful and represent the clothing worn by all levels of society. Musicians will accompany the dances using traditional instruments such as the galoubet, a wooden recorder with three holes held in the left hand, leaving the right hand free to strike a tambourine.

Indonesia Radha Sarisha Directed by Dewinta Anggesti, Radha Sarisha is an organization that develops interest and talent for students in the art of dance, both traditional and modern, and also the art of music. The organization was founded in 2008 and currently has more than 100 members. It has awards at many competitions in Indonesia and performed in festivals in countries such as France, Belgium and Spain. It is based at the Universitas Indonesia, a university located in Depok, a city in the West Java province of Indonesia. The province is located on the island of Java and with 46.3 million people, it is one of the most densely populated of Indonesia’s provinces. In fact, the island of Java is the most populated island in the world.

Lithuania Siaudele Siaudele was founded in 1995 by its leader Birute Sakaliene and is the stage folklore company of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Children ages 6 to 19 sing, play and dance to Lithuanian folk music compositions adapted for stage performance. The ensemble includes a choreographic unit, a vocal group and a small Lithuanian folk instrument orchestra. Members of Siaudele wear the national costumes of the Aukstaitija region of Lithuania. This region is one of five ethnographic regions formed in the country in the 13th century. The costumes feature white shirts and colored vests for men and women. Colored ribbons are used to decorate both men’s and women’s costumes. A very important part of the women’s costume is the white apron, as Lithuanian women did not go anywhere in public without wearing an apron. Unique Lithuanian instruments utilized by Siaudele include the skuduciai, a small tube made of wood that plays only one note. Because of this, skuduciai are usually played in a group to produce harmony.

Polynesia Pacific Generation Pacific Generation is the professional performing team of The Voice of Polynesia, a dance school based in Orem. This school specializes in teaching Polynesian dance and music to all ages. Made up of dancers and musicians originating from the different islands of Polynesia, the performers of Pacific Generation have years of experience in teaching and sharing their love for Polynesian dancing and music. With the creativity of its own choreographers, Pacific Generation brings audiences a new level of understanding of Polynesian entertainment. From the islands of Hawaii and Tahiti to New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and the Marquesas, Pacific Generation brings you the majesty of Polynesia.

Sierra Leone The Biana Players Sierra Leone is a small country in West Africa bordered by Guinea on the northeast, Liberia on the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean on the southwest. “Biana” is a word from one of the dialects which means “greetings to everybody.” It also represents a musical instrument the group is currently using. This instrument is played with a stick and is made out of wood and animal skin. The Biana Players specialize in folklore dances from Sierra Leone and other West African countries, especially Guinea and Liberia. They are directed by Sulaiman Sesay.

Taiwan Water Reflection Dance Ensemble Founded in 2001 and based in Taipei, Taiwan, the Water Reflection Dance Ensemble is a modern dance company marked for “the fusion of ballet and modern skills to show cantabile body language” and oriented toward the creation, performance and education of dancing arts. They hold annual performances and aggressively work with artists from different disciplines on new dances, winning repeatedly the subsidy of the CCA Outstanding Performing Arts Stabilization Fund and being selected as one of the Outstanding Performing Groups of Taipei County. In the future, they wish to become a professional dancing company with their own unique style and establish itself on the international stage. Other than releasing new works, Water Reflection is engaged in all kinds of art festivals and cross-disciplinary performances.

U.S.A. Morning Star

According to ancient legend, Morning Star was the son of the Sun who took on human form and visited the earth many years ago to bring knowledge and wisdom to the human race. With this in mind, Gary Fields founded a Native American performing group in 1982 and named it after the ancient legend. Based in Utah County, Morning Star performs various Native American dances from the exciting Plains Fancy Dance to the serious Sioux Sneak Attack Dance, the humorous Mohawk Partridge Courting Dance and the thrilling and popular Hoop Dance. The dancers’ colorful costumes are authentic and represent the Chemehuevi, Cree, Hopi, Lakota Sioux, Navajo, Ojibay and Yakima nations. Morning Star has performed in more than 30 countries and has been an annual participant at the Springville World Folkfest since the festival’s beginning.

U.S.A. Rocky Mountain Express Based in Orem, Utah, Rocky Mountain Express Clogging Studio was formed in 1999 and is directed by Greg and Maria Tucker, both of whom have been clogging from a young age and danced as part of the Brigham Young University International Folk Dance Ensemble from 1997 to 2000. Both were choreographers for the clogging portion of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Their studio is dedicated to preserving the traditional styles and enveloping the most modern styles of clogging today. The studio currently boasts approximately 20 teams with many of them attending competitions throughout the western United States. Its most decorated team, Rocky Mountain Premiere, has taken five national titles.

World Folkfest Dance Ensemble The World Folkfest Dance Ensemble has been a part of the World Folkfest since 2010. It is an audition/invitation based semiprofessional company. The directors and choreographers of the ensemble are Tara Eyre, Michael Romney and Lyndsey Wulfenstein. Each of them has danced and toured with the Brigham Young University International Folk Dance Ensemble and are also current or past BYU faculty members in the World Dance Department. The purpose of the dance ensemble is to help welcome the international performers to our festival and increase interaction, involvement and education with local performers. If you are interested in auditioning for the Ensemble next year, please refer to the Folkfest website for upcoming information. Auditions are usually held in March/April.
