New leisure pool opens at rec center With the snip of a ribbon, the new leisure pool at the Orem Fitness Center was officially opened to the public on July 12.

“This leisure pool will be a wonderful addition to the center, said Orem Recreation Department Director Karl Hirst to the crowd of people attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was held outside next to doors leading into the new indoor pool area. “I hope you enjoy this fantastic facility and I hope you come back often.”

Following remarks by dignitaries and the ribbon cutting, the crowd surged into the new pool area and watched as Aimee Monsen, the winner of a city Facebook contest, took the inaugural trip down the pool’s water slide.

Orem Mayor Richard Brunst followed as the second person down the slide - dressed in a full suit and tie.

Members of the public then got their opportunity to jump in and enjoy the pool and its features, which include a lazy river channel, a shallow area for young children with two play structures and an area designed for water aerobics and swimming lessons.

“Our children and our grandchildren are going to have a great time here,” said a dripping Brunst as residents crowded into the new pool.

Hirst said the fitness center has had a great fitness and competitive pool, but the new addition adds a place where kids can have fun. “One of the things I hope it does is it transfers our swimmers that we get in the summer into the winter so they’re lifetime swimmers,” he said.

The new 8,000-square-foot indoor pool area was added on to the northwest corner of the Orem Fitness Center. The $3.2 million project also included improvements to the existing fitness center including replacing the pool deck on the center’s existing pool, repainting the existing pool area, upgrading heating and cooling systems, replacing lighting fixtures and renovating locker rooms. The wall between the new and old pool areas was knocked down and replaced with moveable walls so the areas can be opened up or separated for different activities.

The project was funded through Orem’s CARE tax.

YOUTH BASKETBALL (3-8 GRADES) Orem Recreation will be accepting youth basketball registration from Oct. 13 to Nov. 9 for boys and girls grades 3-8. Games will be played on Saturdays beginning Jan. 10, 2015. Fee is $50 plus a $10 Alpine School District fee for grades 3-6 and $55 plus a $10 Alpine School District fee for grades 7-8. Non-resident fee is $10. Teams grades 3-6 are formed by neighborhood areas. Junior high players are drafted onto teams by schools. Draft times will be determined later. Games will be played for seven consecutive Saturdays at junior highs and high schools in Orem. Junior high players will also participate in a city-wide tournament. Timpanogos Storytelling Festival turns 25 Sporting its largest lineup of storytellers ever, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary on August 28-30 with a packed schedule of audience favorites. Perennial storytelling crowd pleasers like master storyteller Donald Davis and five-time West Virginia Liars Champion Bil Lepp will be joined at the festival by Grammy winners Bill Harley and David Holt as well as other national and international performers. Attendees to the event have the opportunity to enjoy stories, live music, puppets and pottery in the beautiful Mt. Timpanogos Park, located at the mouth of Provo Canyon, or catch workshops and evening performances at other Orem venues.

In addition to the ticketed events, community members are invited for

the third year to a free kickoff concert on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Shops at Riverwoods in Provo. This year’s concert, held at Riverwood’s gazebo, will feature storyteller and musician Bill Harley. Starting at 7 p.m., the event is a great opportunity for locals to enjoy songs and stories from a Grammy-winning artist and to discover what storytelling really is.

What is the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival?

The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival invites storytellers from around the nation and across the waters to join with some of our homegrown talent and share stories under our own majestic Mount Timpanogos.

Stories range from fairy tales and fables from various cultures to personal stories of growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. There are

historical tellers, tall tale tellers and youth tellers.

Between storytelling hours, younger ones love to watch the puppeteers while older festival goers enjoy making vases and cups with the potters. Everyone enjoys the food (provided by some of the valley’s finest food vendors) and the jugglers who entertain during lunch and dinner. You can also relax in the music tent and enjoy an incredible array of music. In fact, you could call it a music festival if it wasn’t for all the stories!

Although storytelling may bring to mind picture books and children, the traditional art of oral storytelling is an ancient tradition. Every major culture has stories and tales it passes from generation to generation, always complimented by new stories designed to educate, entertain and inspire. Storytelling is for adults and teens as well; in fact, with the exception of the Friday evening childfriendly Bedtime Stories programs, the Festival is aimed at adults, teens and older children. Tellers mix a variety of traditional folktales, contemporary stories from their own lives, and even music into their tales.

The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival continues to grow. Due to heavy demand over the last few years, a new tent will be added this year at Mt. Timpanogos Park for Saturday night’s Laugh-In Night, adding an additional 1,000 seats to the weekend’s most popular event. Local tellers from the Hauntings contest, held last October, will join the lineup at the ever-popular Shivers In the Night program on Friday evening. “Some of our best scary stories come from local tellers,” says Karen Acerson, president of the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival Board. These additions this year only serve to highlight the ongoing growth that the Festival

has witnessed ever since its humble beginnings.

25 Years of History Twenty-five years ago, the Friends of the Orem Library were trying to come up with a way to raise money to build a children’s wing. They started out with bake sales, home tours, book sales and backyard drama performances, but soon realized that they would have to come up with a

new, more ambitious idea in order to reach their aggressive fundraising goals. That was when Karen Ashton, president of the Friends group, attended her first National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and thought, “What if we try this in Utah?” Eight months later, with the help of 12 volunteers and local sponsors, the first Timpanogos Storytelling Festival was held on the grounds of the Ashton home in Orem with three professional tellers, several local tellers, a handful of musicians and about 900 people in attendance.

The adventure had begun.

The Festival was a hit with audiences and quickly started to grow.

By the second year, the Festival added an evening performance at the SCERA Shell and school groups were invited to the Friday morning session. Eventually, the original goal of the Festival was realized when Winner Top Cruise Line for Families in 2013

festival profits were added to private donations and a city bond in order to break ground on the Orem Library’s children’s wing.

In 1996 the festival outgrew the Ashton’s yard and moved to the Olmstead property at the mouth of Provo Canyon, which had room for more tents, more storytellers, the addition of a youth teller event, and space for hosting and merchandise.

However, the Festival quickly outgrew the new venue and the City of Orem looked into other options for the event. In the end, the city decided to take the needs of the Festival into consideration as they designed Mt. Timpanogos Park at the mouth of Provo Canyon. In 2005, the Festival moved to into its new home. Except for during Festival-time, residents use the park year-round as a popular spot for recreation, exercise and receptions.

Changing of the guard at the chamber

By Donna Milakovic Two years ago, Steve Densley retired from his 30-year career as president/CEO of the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce. At that time, Val Hale became the president/CEO and a new executive vice president position was created. Thus the new leadership team of the chamber was born. Now, after two busy years, there is yet another change in the works.

Val Hale was snatched up by Governor Gary Herbert to be the director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. While the business community of Utah County will miss Val’s leadership on a local level, there is a lot of great work to be done on the state level as well.

For businesses, it is a great opportunity to have a voice in the Capitol.

For our staff, it is a transition.

As a former BYU athletic director, Hale knows a lot about teamwork and the efforts necessary to be competitive in a tough market. He brought all of his leadership skills from his work at BYU and UVU and applied them to the chamber of commerce. Innovation was key to the many great things that were accomplished during his tenure as president. It may have been a short time, but it was highly productive.

Building a strong team was key to the success of the chamber.

Hale engaged the most influential business leaders in the county.

He oversaw the revolution of the chamber’s organizational structure and spent countless hours consulting with businesses, elected officials and volunteers. He added value to the chamber members through new programs and initiatives. In essence, he started the ball rolling along the path to making Utah Valley a better place, as stated in the chamber mission.

Now that the innovations are rolling along, it will be up to the business community to keep them going.

For Orem, it means that one of their own Orem Tigers will now be steer-

ing economic development in the State of Utah. Even in the first few weeks of Hale’s new appointment, he has been engaged in Utah County more than his predecessor. There is an excitement among the businesses of Utah Valley that is undeniable.

The economic growth in the county is leading the state and Hale knows it. He said at the press conference announcing his appointment, “There is life beyond the gravel curtain.” He promises to remain a strong advocate for Utah Valley business and to bring attention to the fabulous things happening in the county.

While the chamber’s board of directors searches for a new president, the staff will carry on the fall programs and events. Here are just a few of the things happening in the next few months at the Utah Valley Chamber:

Early start helps sophomores adjust Classes in Orem schools officially started on Tuesday, Aug. 19 - except for sophomores anticipating the exciting beginning of their high school experience. The city’s new sophomores were invited to visit their schools a day early - on Monday, Aug. 18 - to learn about the traditions of their schools, find their classrooms, meet their teachers and have some fun as well.

All three Orem high schools host a sophomore day each year on the day before school officially begins to help sophomores become acquainted with the school and find their classrooms and lockers before the halls are filled with older juniors and seniors. The events are not required, but hundreds attend each year.

“Getting to know a new building, knowing that you’re going to be

there with older kids, people that are getting ready to graduate and go to college, can be intimidating”,” said Mike Larson, an assistant principal at Orem High School. The sophomore day allows students to visit the school in a casual way and get to know the building and their teachers before beginning class.

At OHS, the sophomore event includes an assembly where cheerleaders teach the school song and cheers and senior class officers give advice.

The students also make short visits to each of their classes.

Feedback from students and parents about the event has been good.

“I see it more in their eyes that first day of school, they’ve already been to their locker and know how to open it and those types of things,” Larson said. “I think it’s worth the time that

we spend doing it.” The day ends with a fire drill, treats and an opportunity to socialize.

Debbie Zirbes, an assistant principal at Timpanogos High School, said the sophomore day helps students overcome any jitters they may have before the older students arrive. The THS event includes opportunities to meet the school’s administration and counselors and learn about school clubs and activities. She said THS particularly encourages sophomores to join clubs and get involved at the school. “We find that kids that have a connection to the school in other ways do better academically,” Zirbes said. Each student also receives a THS T-shirt proclaiming that they’re “Proud to be a T-Wolf.”

dents sophomores, Zirbes said. “It keeps that graduation idea out in front of them.”

Mack Fieldsted, student council advisor and financial literacy teacher at Mountain View High School, said he proposed the idea of a sophomore day at MVHS seven years ago as a way to help integrate new sophomores who were coming to MVHS from two different junior high schools.

Titled Sophomore Academy at Mountain View, the day includes an assembly where sophomores learn traditional MVHS cheers and tours of the school given by members of the student council. Students get to meet their teachers and learn about school rules. The day wraps up with a barbecue and an opportunity to socialize.

MVHS Student Council members personally take invitations to the home of each sophomore to invite them to the event. “It’s made a really positive impact in our sophomores,” Fieldsted said. “It’s kind of a tradition now where they get the school to themselves now and it’s kind of neat.”
