The Orem and Vineyard Connection Magazine is finally here! This bi-annual magazine is inspired, in part, by the old community newspaper, the Orem-Geneva Times, that covered the cities of Orem and Vineyard and reported on what was happening in those communities. Following the themes of “Family City USA” for Orem, and helping people to “Stay Connected” in Vineyard, the Orem and Vineyard Connection Magazine will focus on recreation, education, arts and entertainment, health and wellness, business, and more. OREM MAYOR’S MESSAGE In February of this year, the Milken Institute named the Provo-Orem area as the No. #1 metropolitan area in the nation for economic performance. In years past, Orem has been named the #1 city to start a family, to raise a family, to start a business, to grow old, and to go trick or treating at Halloween.

The Milken Study noted that Orem had one of the nation’s overall lowest unemployment rates, one of the highest rates of new job growth, and one of the highest rates of tech job growth. Combined together it showed this area to be the top one in the country.

There is a lot to like in Orem. In fact the bleed-in percentage of people shopping in Orem from other surrounding cities runs around 125%. Orem boasts having over 7 major grocery shopping stores in the city including Target, Smiths, Trader Joes, Costco, Maceys, Winco, and Harmons.

Orem is also a major retail center with the University Place mall on University Parkway. Orem is home to many businesses, and in fact over 300 new businesses have come to or started up in Orem in the past couple of years. Orem also has a new mass transit line in the UVX bus rapid transit line that connects the city to the Front Runner high speed train.

Orem also is home to the largest University in Utah with Utah Valley University having over 43,000 students enrolled.

And this year the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has started construction on a new Temple in the southwest part of the city. Orem recently built a new “Family Fitness Center”, with over 108,000 square feet of recreation and swimming space with the County’s largest lap pool. And this year Orem opened up a new “Library Hall” with a 500 seat community auditorium.

Orem has over 25 parks throughout the city. We now have a splash pad park, a dog park, a bike skills park, an all ability park, two parks with pickleball courts, a futsal park, and ten other parks with new children’s playground equipment. Orem also loves the arts and is home to two wonderful theaters in the Scera Theater and the Hale Theater.

Orem has four exits to our wonderful city off of the I-15 freeway for great access. We also connect with the US route 189 that goes up Provo Canyon for easy access to the Bridal Veil Waterfalls, the Provo River, the Sundance Ski Resort, and the Deer Creek Reservoir to go boating.

What I love most about Orem is the people who live here.

We have strong families and great residents. Orem is known as “Family City USA” and fits that title.

VINEYARD MAYOR’S MESSAGE Vineyard has a keen eye on what city design means for businesses. Every long-term planning decision in Vineyard is packed with public opinion, think-tanks of local and state key stakeholders, state and regional drivers of commerce, and successful business leaders, modeling done by world-renowned engineering and design experts, and deeply researched processes.

Over the last decade, some of the clearest consumer trends reveal that retailers need to focus on tailored selections for shoppers, model experience over materialism, and bring a sense of destination that is full of ease and convenience.

Additionally, remote work and satellite office spaces are at the frontier of industry. People want to live where they can work, relax, recreate, and indulge in nature and entertainment alike.

Business headquarters need to model these trends and locate in cities such as Vineyard that follow these standards.

In Vineyard, there is an extensive transit-oriented development placing people and businesses together in a walkable mixed-use center where jobs, housing, higher education, wide-open spaces, world-class transportation, and investments are coordinated into a travel destination. This is the Vineyard smart city design model, focused on creating quality of life by meeting infrastructure needs, creating diverse and affordable housing, preserving finite resources, and creating space where people can live and work.

Smart city planning has a cornerstone of proper design and

connection. It fashions a community that is ‘human scale’, centering standards around people. Vineyard continues to remove barriers of exclusive housing perimeters and provides strategic inclusive housing options that encourage multi-faceted lifestyles throughout the city and in the heart of the downtown.

Vineyard is working with the state to support a multi-modal station that will initiate a higher-speed transit option placing double-tracking near the new FrontRunner station this construction season. The Vineyard Connector, an alternative north-south regional connection for Utah County, will begin its first phase soon. Vineyard is laying down new streets and promenades in our transit-oriented development and will start welcoming industry into the city’s center.

UPCOMING IN VINEYARD The results from the 2020 US Census lists Utah as the fastest-growing state in America (ABC4 News, 2021). Utah’s population has grown by 18.4% over the past decade. Counties, towns, and municipalities across the state are becoming home to hundreds even thousands of new residents. Vineyard City is no exception. Vineyard has grown from 139 residents in 2010 to more than 17,000 residents in 2020. This kind of growth is projected to continue in Vineyard for years to come.

Vineyard City officials desire not only to accommodate this growth but ensure that this growth and the ensuing development are carried out in such a way that maintains and enhances the City’s quality of life and wellbeing for existing and future residents. City officials have been working around the clock to put plans into place that will ensure that Vineyard meets the various needs of an increasingly diverse community.

This includes planning for parks, trails, and open space, neighborhood amenities and services, places of employment and industry, retail districts, and of course an array of housing choices to call home. In addition, City officials are passionate about creating a community that provides sustainable urban design and walkable, transit-oriented neighborhoods. Vineyard is striving to lead the charge in the fight against global climate change and temperature rise and one of the fundamental ways of doing this is by reducing auto-dependency.

Furthermore, City officials have established zoning, building, subdivision, and site plan regulations that call for efficient, smart growth that makes better use of the limited availability of land and space throughout the City. These statutes foster safer, more welcoming streets for cars, cyclists, and pedestrians, and dense, vibrant neighborhoods. A pristine example of this is the upcom-

ing Downtown Vineyard (already under construction as of May 2021).

Downtown Vineyard is proposed to be the only true transit-oriented development (TOD) along the Wasatch Front. It will be a vibrant, burgeoning center of activity and commerce for the City; a destination with many exciting places to visit, live, recreate, and shop.

The Downtown connects a regional transit-served core and a superb park and trail system to Utah Lake.

As a true TOD, there will be a mix of uses, creating a more balanced community. Diverse Districts tied together by great walkable streets and open spaces will encourage people to spend their day and night in the downtown area, rather than driving back and forth across the region. Not only will Downtown Vineyard function as the City’s center, but it will also become the most diverse, active, and sustainable center in Utah County (Vineyard City Special Purpose Zoning Districts: Downtown Vineyard, 2020).

This and other such projects are atop the City’s priority list. Vineyard has and will continue to make considerable strides in environmental sustainability.

Various ordinances have been introduced that ensure the City will continue to thrive for the immediate and the foreseeable future. The City’s Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) espouses systems of low impact development (LID) and green infrastructure (GI) that guarantees Vineyard’s waterway systems are kept healthy, productive, and environmentally friendly.

In Vineyard, we wish to give back to the beautiful nature that sustains and surrounds us. The SWMP also aims to maintain and/or enhance our unique and sensitive land features including wetlands, farmland, stream corridors,

and lakefront.

Plans are currently being drafted to make the Vineyard Utah Lakefront a keystone of our community. The Lakefront will host a range of commercial and recreational, beachfront amenities that will brand and cultivate Vineyard Tourism.

The Lakefront will draw visitors from across the region and beyond. The Lakefront will feature places for swimming, boating, jet skiing, kayaking, fishing, birdwatching, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, and more. This will be accomplished concurrently with initiatives to restore, enhance, and preserve the sensitive ecological features inherently present in Utah Lake. Increasing accessibility and connectivity to the Lakefront is also a primary focus.

Trail connections and extensions are being laid all throughout the community to make sure that every person and every neighborhood has access to the City’s wonderful amenities. Ideally, you will never have to enter a car to reach the many wonderful things there are to do throughout the City.

Vineyard City will continue to focus on nurturing a brilliant reputation. City Officials will continue to plan wisely and conscientiously alongside residents for the needs of a diverse population, and for the needs of an environmentally sensitive location. Your input is extremely valuable to City Officials and their hopes are to continue to keep their ears on the ground as they plan with you to make Vineyard City a better place to live, work, and recreate.

NEW OREM REC CENTER The new highly anticipated Orem Rec Center opened in March after being under construction for almost 2 years.

It is one of the premier Rec Centers in Utah County and offers a wide array of amenities.

The Fitness Center has been fully stocked with top of the line equipment and machines for both cardio and strength training.

The Fitness Center also includes areas to help with flexibility, speed, agility, and balance, and group fitness classes and personal trainers are available as well. There are four beautiful racquetball courts that can be reserved for up to 2 hours at a time as well as a rock climbing wall and a pool. People of all ages can find several different types of classes offered at the fitness center, from basketball to gymnastics, art to magic, even the “Evil Scientist Academy” offers something new and fun!

The child care facilities offer 1,150 square feet of play area with a dedicated restroom, private fenced outdoor playground, and new electronic check-in.

Enhanced security measures and COVID cleaning precautions have been implemented. There are child care attendants supervising the children and leading games and activities. Parents must remain in the facility and be available to respond if paged.

The new indoor playground is a custom-built modern structure that was made possible by the generous donations of community members and City of Orem employees. It is a fun place for children to play and stay active and is open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The two level playground boasts three slides, three towers, enclosed skyways, and climbing mazes. This fun new playground was designed for children ages 2-12 (children younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult) but is big and strong enough if mom or dad needs to go in and retrieve their children because they are having too much fun.

The teen lounge was created to be a safe and fun

space for teenagers to hang out. There are free wifi and desk areas for students to do their homework as well as two large screen TVs with the latest versions of both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X. Games and controllers are available for check out at the front desk for one-hour blocks for $2 to help offset the cost of replacement. All games are rated E as screens are visible to patrons of all ages.

SUNDANCE MOUNTAIN RESORT

up to the bottom of falls, offering a great view. The middle of the falls, where the “Veil” ends, is accessible via an easy, 10 minute hike that is suitable for even small children. A more advanced climb using existing ropes can take you to the upper falls. During the winter, ice climbers will often scale the frozen water that makes up the falls. Near the parking lot, there is a pond stocked with rainbow trout that you can feed, as well as large grassy picnic areas.

PROVO RIVER TRAIL

The Provo River Trail starts north of Bridal Veil Falls at Vivian Park in the Provo Canyon, and then follows the river all the way to Utah Lake. The Parkway makes for a great walk as it passes through many beautiful state, city, and county parks on its 15 mile path. You can walk, jog, or bike any part of the trail or enjoy the many opportunities the river itself affords.

Stretches in the canyon are very popular for rafting, canoeing, and fly fishing.

MOUNTAIN VIEW HIGH SCHOOL Every year high school seniors face their own struggles, from finding motivation through that senioritis to deciding what to do with the rest of their lives. Even though this year had more challenges than most, the students at Mountain View High School rose above and beyond, using the trials of this year to create good memories rather than foster bad ones.

Despite all of the additional challenges of this year, there are many difficulties that every high school senior from any year has had to face— including the challenge of not wanting to grow up at all: a sentiment that many students have openly shared. However, Student Body Vice President, Julia Smith, wisely reminded us that “things change, and you have to be okay with it.” And through this change, the MVHS senior class always showed up, even if it was just “to cheer outside of the fences,” Hannah Fairbanks, Student Body Public Relations remarked. Fairbanks continued, explain-

ing that “the senior class was the class that showed up and cheered the loudest and showed the most support” when they were allowed to attend games as well.

The senior class always managed to support their school in whatever capacity they could, forever embodying the Bruin spirit. The Bruin spirit is perfectly encapsulated in Mountain View High School’s theme this year: “We’re Making History.”

As the Bruin senior class has continuously supported one another throughout this year, they have truly changed

not only the course of this school year, but the course of future generations of Mountain View students. Katie Bell, the Student Body President for this historical year, perfectly captured this idea when she said, “We are Bruins, and we don’t shun the fight. We get up and keep going and fighting!” The senior class this year has set the tone for future Bruins to have that same mindset.

OREM HIGH SCHOOL What a great experience this year has been! There have been obvious challenges that each of us have faced. Those challenges have also uncovered blessings that have been part of our lives, but are now more easily recognized. School is one of those blessings that seems more obvious than it did a short while ago.

It seems that we remember to be the most grateful for those things that are taken from us, or which we are in danger of losing. As we opened school in August it seemed that the most prominent feeling here was one of gratitude. Teachers were thankful to have students back in class. Students were happy to be back in school interacting with their teachers and peers. Activities could happen again. Concerts, plays, and games were once again possible.

I want to thank our OHS community for the support we have felt at school during this past year. Certainly, things have not been ideal. Yet we have had a successful year. I attribute much of our success to our students and their parents. This year would have been much more difficult if members of our community did not have such a great attitude and a willingness to help our school to succeed.

As we reflect on this year, I also want to thank you for the great opportunity it is for us at OHS to associate with such wonderful, talented and resilient students.

They are a reflection of their parents. I am consistently amazed as I see their artistic skills, their athletic prowess and their overall goodness to each other.

This past year has also served to remind us how indispensable teachers

are. We are blessed to have excellent teachers at OHS. We are so thankful that teaching and learning are happening face to face.

Our graduation theme this year is “Together We Rise.” This school year has been a fitting illustration of that theme. Thanks to each of you who have helped our students and school rise from uncertainty and isolation of last year, to the successful school year we have just enjoyed.

POLARIS HIGH SCHOOL Polaris West High School opened last school year in the south end of the old Walmart building, located off the 5th East exit in American Fork. We are a sister school to the Polaris High School located in Orem. Although considered an alternative high school, graduates of both Polaris high schools receive an accredited High School Diploma.

Similar to the traditional high schools in Alpine District, we offer in-person instruction with classrooms and teachers as well as busing and lunch. So, why are we considered an alternative high school? We specialize in credit recovery.

Polaris focuses on both students that are credit deficient and others that would like to graduate early. Polaris provides a smaller setting where students can develop close relationships with teachers and receive instruction within a small

group. For example, our current student body count is approximately 150. Our typical classes average around 8-10 students.

I am pleased to announce that thirty-seven students have graduated early from our school by mid-year! Once a student completes the required credits for graduation, parents are invited to an informal celebration and then again to the formal graduation in May. Our numbers fluctuate as we graduate students and enroll more students throughout the school year. Our graduates have been able to enroll in college, join the military, or seek gainful employment.

Students must be referred to Polaris High School in Alpine District. However, enrollment at a Polaris high school is voluntary. We do not offer extra-curricular activities such as proms, sports teams, music programs, or clubs. That is why we want students to have the opportunity to attend a traditional high school and participate in all of those activities before being referred to Polaris.

Once a student enrolls, they will com-

plete their education with us.

Polaris West houses the Titan Closet, which is a resource for local students to select clothing, hygiene items, and a small variety of food items on an as needed basis. We offer gently used clothing including coats and shoes as well as brand new clothing items such as underwear.

Alpine District recently announced that the two Polaris schools will be combining again in the American Fork location. As the current Polaris West principal, I will continue to be the principal of the combined Polaris High School.

TIMPANOGOS HIGH SCHOOL At Timpanogos High School, we learn, not for school, but for life. While that may sound like just a nice slogan to put on a wall, it has been our relentless pursuit for the past several years. For too many decades, public education in general has been stuck in an industrial era efficiency mindset where content is taught in siloed classrooms that often lack relevance. As a result, by the time students get to high school, too often a large percentage have disengaged, and school became a game of points with hoops to jump through to graduate.

At THS we refuse to continue that traditional culture. Instead, we make skills and dispositions our explicit goal, and then we use classroom content essentials as the vehicle to take students to a deep learning (6C’s) destination. The 6C’s are: · Creativity · Critical Thinking · Collaboration · Communication · Citizenship · Character As a result, we encourage all students to challenge themselves with college level courses through Advanced Placement (AP) or Concurrent Enrollment (CE) classes through UVU. We have had the highest rates of participation in both AP and CE classes of any school in Alpine School District (and among the highest in the state). For the past 8 years, our graduation rate has been between 9295%. But more importantly, we are striving to create a daily deep learning (6C’s) environment in every classroom, every day. Our teachers have been incredibly committed as we continue to make this cultural shift.

This focus also redefines extracurricular activities for us. At times, our society has lost sight of what athletics and other activities should be about. At Timpanogos High School we view our extracurricular activities (athletics, performing arts, clubs, etc) as simply another vehicle by which we can intentionally help students progress down the deep learning road. Whether it is the school play, or the winning play on the basketball court, we understand that extracurricular activities

are more than just an activity or a win/loss record.

Adopting this paradigm in the classroom, as well as on the cross-country course, the stage, the baseball diamond or the soccer pitch allow us to unapologetically strive to improve the skills and dispositions of every student in our stewardship and as a result improve our community locally and beyond.

We are grateful for the commitment our teachers have to this ideal. We are also grateful to our student body that embraces our collective values.

We continually strive to accomplish these two vision goals: •Deliberately Foster Connection and Well Being of Students and Staff •Deliberately Develop Deep Learning for Students and Staff (6C’s) Michael Fullan, one of the great educational experts of the last 30 years, has said that if we don’t intentionally de-

velop a culture of deep learning (6C’s), public education will be irrelevant by 2030. He also states that this approach is the most viable solution to the problems of inequity and disengagement in our schools.

This COVID pandemic has been a springboard for us to be more deliberate in accomplishing our vision goals. The pandemic has forced us to make some large leaps forward toward these goals.

It has been challenging, but we will emerge better because of it.

A huge shout out to the class of 2021 for successfully navigating a year like no other. I’m encouraged as I see the future leaders and problem solvers head into the world.

WATERING: Proper watering procedures help maintain lawn color, resilience, and proper root development. You should water the lawn regularly before it has a chance to wilt and brown. To ensure proper watering procedures, follow these general guidelines: •Be aware of early signs of wilt, including bluish-green grass caused by folded grass leaves and footprints that stay in the lawn instead of bouncing back up.

•A lawn needs one inch of water per week for healthy growth under normal conditions. Additional water is required when high temperatures occur.

•You may apply water any time of day, but morning watering is usually most efficient. Night watering is not recommended as it encourages disease and insect development.

MOWING: Proper mowing practices are critical to the appearance of your

lawn. In fact, improper mowing causes more lawn problems than any other maintenance practice. Follow these general guidelines to improve the health and appearance of your lawn: •Make sure your blade is sharp. Grass cut with a dull blade appears gray shortly after mowing, and the tips turn brown within 48 hours.

•Cut often enough to remove no more than one-third of the grass blade. This will help avoid scalping, which puts the grass under stress and reduces its vigor.

•Mow at the correct height; about 3”. This will shade the soil, keeping temperatures lower for optimum growth.

•Avoid mowing during midday when temperatures are above 90 degrees.

•Leave clippings if you mow often enough. The grass clippings will recycle nutrients back into the soil and will not contribute to thatch build-up.
