Mayor’s Welcome

Welcome, Santaquin citizens, friends and neighbors to this year’s Orchard Days celebration! This year’s theme is “Rooted in Fun” and the City Council and I are excited to invite you to take part in the many wonderful events scheduled during this week. With our award winning rodeo, our fun-filled family night, the Main Street parade, art shows, races, Saturday in the Park and a sky filled with the magic of fireworks, there’s indeed something for everyone.

Many, many people have pulled together to make this event a success. We especially thank this year’s Chair, Jolynn Forman, and all the staff and volunteers from across the city who have worked so hard to get everything ready.

And none of this would be possible without the financial support of our many sponsors, for whom we are enormously grateful.

Place: Line up at Centennial Park, 300 West 100 South Pick up behind Rec Offices, 45 West 100 South Cost: FREE Kick off Family Night with our Children’s Parade! Participants ages 0-12 can decorate their bikes, tricycles, wagons, etc., and come parade them around for everyone to see. Judging begins at 5:45 p.m.

Certificates will be awarded for various entries including queen’s choice, mayor’s choice, most creative, most unique, etc. This year’s theme is “Make the Town Green for Jaycee” in honor of Jaycee Jolley as the Children’s Parade Grand Marshal.

Tickets for carnival games held during Family Night will be given to participants behind the Rec Offices directly following the parade.

Gas-powered vehicles are not permitted. Don’t miss the FREE carnival games for kids following the parade! Children’s Parade Grand Marshal

Jaycee Jolley December 9, 2013, was a day that changed everything. A mass was discovered in little 3-month-old Jaycee’s liver. Angie and Blake had no idea the journey they would undertake with their family and the fight ahead, the fight against liver cancer for their little girl.

This little infant has endured the endless trips to the doctor, surgeries, chemo and being poked and proded, and through it all she finds a way to cheer others up with her precious smile. She is a fighter, an inspiration to many who have struggles much simpler than hers.

This is why the Orchard Days Committee has chosen Jaycee Jolley as the Children’s Parade Grand Marshal. We invite you to visit her

Grand Marshals

Jim & Carla DeGraffenried

Former Santaquin Mayor Jim DeGraffenried and his wife Carla have been selected to serve as the grand marshals of the 2014 Santaquin Orchard Days Grand Parade, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. on Santaquin’s Main Street.

Married in 1971, Jim and Carla DeGraffenried have raised eight children in Santaquin and have 27 grandchildren, some of whom still live in the city. Carla has spent her whole life living in Santaquin, while Jim was born in Murray and lived there and in South Jordan until leaving at age 19 to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Southern California. While he was gone, his parents had moved to Santaquin, so upon his return Santaquin became his home.

Jim grew up on a farm and learned how to work at a young age. Always an entrepreneur, Jim began raising livestock and purchasing

properties and became a journeyman brick layer all before the age of 18. His career as a general contractor began in 1971 through building houses. His career has since led him to specialize in building large commercial and refrigerated buildings. He has built major

Jim & Carla DeGraffenried warehouses in the state as well as landmarks in Santaquin such as Rowley’s Red Barn.

Jim had never expected to run for political office; his interest in city operations began when he was asked to serve on Santaquin’s planning and zoning commission. He served on that board for five years. It was about five years after serving on that board that he decided to run for mayor. He won his first fouryear term, then ran for re-election and won a second term. He left the position last January after serving for eight years.

One of his priorities in running for mayor was helping Santaquin maintain its smalltown atmosphere while growing its tax base and helping it be a self-sufficient city. He helped update the city’s master plan and requested the state legislature to declare Santaquin as an agricultural heritage district.

That resolution was passed and signed by the governor.

He also wanted to ensure that Santaquin’s water resources were protected and grown.

One of the highlights of his tenure as mayor was the creation of the Santaquin Water Reclamation Facility. Jim said he and the city were able to secure multimillion dollar grants to help pay for the project, which enabled the city to eliminate its open sewer lagoons and enclose its sewage treatment operations in a 30,000-square-foot building.

Main Street beautification was also accomplished under his administration, with Main Street widened and landscaping done at the junction of Main Street and Interstate 15.

Jim said he enjoyed serving as mayor and thanked residents who showed trust in him through electing him to that position. He also thanked the city staff and council members he worked with, adding that it was through their work and support that the city was able to move forward.

Art & Quilt Show Artists Meet & Greet July 28 • 6-9 p.m.

Place: Senior Citizens Center, 45 West 100 South Cost: $1 per entry (limit three per person; benefits Art Council) Free to view The roots of Art and Quilting are FUN! Show your talents at the Art/Quilt show! Artists/Quilters of any age may submit art and quilt projects at the Recreation Offices to be shown. Anyone can enter, but there is a limit of three entries per person. Prizes will be awarded. Be sure to join us during Family Night on July 28 from 6–9 p.m. for an Artist Meet and Greet, and share the stories behind your art and quilts. The Arts Council would really like to encourage young artists to submit their art! Pre-registration required; registration deadline July 25.

Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Cabin Tours July 28 • 6–9 p.m.

Preserving the heritage of Santaquin in the form of a cabin originally built about 1871. This has become a focus for two local camps of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers who honor the early settlers regardless of their religious affiliation by learning about their lives and how that affects Utah residents today. Santaquin’s Chieftain Museum Tours

Place: Chieftain Museum, 100 West 100 South Cost: FREE

Come explore the deep roots that have built our community with a tour at the Santaquin Chieftain Museum. In the heart of the community of Santaquin, an old schoolhouse built in 1903 has been converted into a museum. The exhibits depict the early pioneer settling of Santaquin, continuing on to the present. Each room in the museum has a theme. For example, one room contains patriotic memorabilia from Santaquin’s war veterans. Another room has a pioneer hand-cart and old farm machinery. Come roam through the all the rooms to learn more about the history of Santaquin. The museum offers a surprising variety of exhibits. Bring the whole family and enjoy seeing and learning about Santaquin’s heritage.

Sidewalk Chalk Art Monday, July 28 • 6 p.m.

Place: Behind Rec Offices Cost: FREE Sign up for this year’s fun sidewalk chalk art exhibition.There will be prizes for “best creations.” Pre-registration is suggested and participants will be assigned a space during Family Night. Check in at City tent.

Mountain Bike Race

Place: Kester’s Grove about 1.5 miles up Pole Canyon Road (take Canyon Road (Center Street), turn right at 900 South, left bend to 100 West and take the gravel road to the meadow area) Cost: $5 Youth; $20 Adult Our annual Mountain Bike Race offers courses for Advanced, Intermediate, Beginner, and Youth. These courses are generally along two-track dirt roads with gradual climbs over rocky and loose gravel terrain. Come and enjoy beautiful vistas over the Utah and Juab county valleys. The advanced course has an uphill climb and then a long downhill section.

Helmets are required for all participants.
