Library offers Food for Fines program During the week of the Lehi Round-Up, the Lehi Library will be conducting its Food for Fines program. This program is designed to help those in need in the community while allowing residents to clear any fines they may have at the library.

Monday through Friday, June 22-26, for every non-perishable food item donated at the library, $1 will be waived from patrons’ overdue fines up to $10. This applies to fines only and not to movie charges, lost or damaged items or accounts in collection.

Items suggested for donation include meals in a can (stew, chili, soup, SpaghettiOs), canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned meats, tuna fish, low-sugar cereal, peanut butter, powdered milk and pinto beans. Not acceptable as donations are home-canned foods; dented, damaged or expired food; glass containers; opened packages; items with missing labels; or repackaged foods.

All food donated will go to Community Action Services and Food Bank. For more information about Food for Fines, call 385-201-1050.

Round-Up Rodeo

Don’t miss this year’s exciting rodeo The 2015 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 24-27, at the Lehi Rodeo Arena, 200 N. 500 West, Lehi. This popular rodeo will begin each night at 8 p.m.

There is nothing comparable to watching the grand entry at the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo. With the music, flags, cowgirls and Mt. Timpanogos rising to the east, it is a scene right out of a movie and surprisingly patriotic. It is America at its best.

This year, the event celebrates its 78th year of professional rodeo.

In 1941, with a war looming, the Lehi mayor and city council organized the Civic Improvement Association. One of the tasks this group was assigned was to organize and carry out a citywide celebration. Under its direction, the celebration was moved to the last full week of June. A “name the celebration” was held and Ethel Hunger’s winning entry was the Lehi Round-Up, which recalled the farming and ranching legacy of the area’s early pioneers.

The Lehi Round-Up Rodeo is a major stop on the Wilder-

ness Circuit for professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls. To add to the excitement, the committee has always been successful in bringing top rodeo acts to perform for the crowd.

Of course, the phrase “Utah, are you ready for bull riding?” can be heard each night echoing through the arena and it brings the crowd to life.

Grand Marshals

Russell and Rita Felt to lead Lehi parade Russell and Rita Felt have been named grand marshals for the 2015 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo celebration. Russ was born and raised in Lehi where he worked for various farmers and at the Lehi Cemetery and learned the value of gaining a higher education. He attended Lehi Elementary School and Lehi Junior High School and was in one of the last graduating classes to attend the old Lehi High School. In high school, Russ lettered in five sports and went to Brigham Young University to play football. A career-ending injury sent him on an LDS mission to Australia instead of continuing his football career, which he said thrilled his mother.

After his mission, Russ went back to BYU where he majored in PE and English. He eventually got two master’s degrees: one in educational psychology and a second one in educational administration. While at BYU, Russ was enrolled in the Air Force ROTC and upon graduation he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and served four years in the Air Force. One of his postings was to the Long Island Suffolk County Air Force Base in New York, where he was set up on

Rita was raised in New York. She was born in Manhattan and then moved to an elementary school on Long Island, where she graduated from high school. She attended Potsdam State University where she got a degree in music and then a second degree in elementary education. She and Russ were eventually married in England where Russ had been transferred by the Air Force.

Once Russ’s active service ended, the couple taught school in New York, then Russ taught and coached several sports at Manti High School. In 1972, they moved to Lehi where Russ continued to teach and coach. He helped coach football, basketball and tennis. He was involved with a state championship team in tennis, though he had mixed feelings about that because they won the state title by beating his former school of Manti. Russ eventually moved from the classroom to the counseling center and then to the administrative offices at Lehi High School. He was named the principal of Lehi Junior High School where he oversaw the move to the newly built

Lehi Junior High. During the destruction of the old junior high, Russ found lots of unclaimed items under lockers and in other out-of-the-way places. He still has a box with some of these items, a kind of unofficial history of the many years of schooling that happened there.

Russ was then assigned to Lehi High School as the principal where he served for 12 years. He finished his teaching career at the Alpine District Office as the director of pupil services. He really enjoyed his career in education. “It’s fun to see former students, to visit with them and see what’s transpired in their lives,” he said. After raising their three boys, Rita also returned to the education field, working many years as the Utah Valley State College director of high school tutoring where she was responsible for the three large districts in the Mountainlands region.

Russ and Rita have also been heavily involved in church and community activities. Russ has served as a high councilor, bishop and, for many years, was president of the Lehi Utah Stake. One of their favorite callings was serving at the MTC. Today, Russ is the patriarch of the Lehi Utah Jordan River Stake with Rita serving as scribe. Rita also spent 12 years in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. After her retirement,

she continued to serve on the hosting committee.

As a young man, Russ helped build the Veteran’s Park baseball field under the direction of Dean Pryor. He also served many years as president of the Camp Floyd Association and is still actively promoting local history.

He continued his military service with the Air National Guard where he served for 18 years. He is a retired captain in the USAF with 22 years of total service.

Russ and Rita are the proud parents of three boys, three great daughters-in-law and 12 grandchildren.

Round-Up Royalty

2015 Queen - Carly Peercy Carly Peercy of South Jordan is the 2015 Lehi Round-Up Rodeo Queen. She is the 21-year-old daughter of Curtis Peercy and Lana Peercy. Carly is a graduate of Salt Lake Community College and is currently pursuing a degree in business management at Utah State University. Along with riding her horses and pursuing her rodeo queen dream of becoming Miss Rodeo Utah, Carly loves boating, camping, snowboarding and horse sledding and also volunteers at the Natural Ability Center working with children with disabilities. She looks forward to representing the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo and promoting the “Greatest Show on Dirt.�

First Attendant - Sarah Lady First attendant to the 2015 Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo is Sarah Lady from Mapleton. She is the 20-year-old daughter of Chuck and Cheryl Lady. Sarah has been active in 4-H and enjoys riding, camping, shooting and hiking along with photography, dance and teaching. Her love of animals has led her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Sarah looks forward to sharing the legacy and tradition of the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo.

Second Attendant - Carlie Brotherson Carlie Brotherson, second attendant to the 2015 Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo, is the 21-year-old daughter of Richard and Molly Brotherson of Mt. Pleasant. She is a recent graduate of Utah Valley University and plans to pursue a degree in accounting from Southern Utah University. In her spare time, Carlie enjoys competing in barrel racing, pole bending and goat tying, playing the piano and spending time in the mountains snowmobiling and hiking with family and friends. Carlie is excited to represent the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo and the sport that has provided her many opportunities.

Legacy Center Doubles Tennis Tournament Sponsored by Culver’s The Lehi Round-Up Doubles Tennis Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 20, at the Lehi High School Tennis Courts. The tournament is open to everyone from fifth grade to adult. The competition will be a doubles match format tournament with prizes for the top finishers. The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until completed.

Registration is $15 per pair of competitors. The registration fee includes a T-shirt for the first 30 teams to register. Early registration can be completed at the Lehi Legacy Center registration office, which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., or competitors can register the day of the event.

Payment is with cash or check only and exact change is appreciated. Players should bring their own water. For more information, call the Legacy Center at 385-201-2000.

Half-Price Swim Day The Lehi Legacy Center will offer a half-price swim day on Monday, June 22. The half-prince swim will be held from 1 to 8:30 p.m. at the Legacy Center pool and 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Outdoor Pool.

Horseshoe Tournament Sponsored by A Mad Man’s Hobby The Lehi Round-Up Horseshoe Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 27, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Lehi Sports Park, 2000 W. 700 South, Lehi. This competition is open to everyone from fifth-graders (2014-15 school year) to adults.

There will be competition categories for singles and pairs and prizes for the top finishers. Registration is free for Lehi residents and $15 for non-residents. Registration will begin at the Sports Park at 1 p.m. the day of the tournament.

Arts Council Events

Arts in the Park

The Lehi Arts Council will prevent two Arts in the Park events during the 2015 Lehi Round-Up celebration. Both will be presented in Wines Park. On Sunday, June 21, at 7 p.m., Arts in the Park will present Johnny and the Rebels in concert. On Sunday, June 28, at 7 p.m., Arts in the Park will present the Lehi Symphonic Band. The band will play a program of patriotic music.

Round-up Art Show The 2015 Lehi Round-Up Art Show will be on display Monday through Friday, June 22 to June 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to noon. A reception including refreshments and live music will be conducted on Monday, June 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. to honor exhibiting artists.

The presentation of awards will be presented at 5 p.m. during the reception. There will be cash awards for ďŹ rst, second and

third place as well as prizes for ďŹ ve honorable mention award recipients.

Booth at Family Fun Day with Face Painting The Lehi City Arts Council will provide a booth offering face painting during the Family Fun Day planned on Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wines Park.

CrossStrung to perform at family picnic Sponsored by Assured Direct Mail The Lehi Round-Up Family Picnic in the Park will be held on Monday, June 22, at 6:30 p.m. in Wines Park, with entertainment provided by the band CrossStrung.

CrossStrung” is one of Utah’s most exciting acoustic groups, with four musicians, a variety of instruments, tight harmonies and hot instrumentals. This family band enjoys performing a variety of music including Celtic, bluegrass, folk, country and gospel while adding their own unique style.

Their show is energetic and fun.

As winners of the National Family Talent Search, they opened for the Hughes Brothers in Branson, Mo. They have won several individual and band competitions.

Sarah Riggs and her husband, Dan, have played for thousands at folk festivals in more than 14 different countries around the world. Sarah has been to Ireland and Canada to study Celtic guitar and has won many guitar and mandolin competitions. Dan and Leah Cluff are both hot fiddle champions and dazzle audiences with their lightening-fast fingers.

Emma Cluff is an amazing singer and bass player and is the heartbeat of the group.

The members of CrossStrung are impressive and talented entertainers. This is a family group not to be missed. If you enjoy gospel, bluegrass and celtic music these folks will make your heart sing.”

Baby Contest planned at Legacy Center Sponsored by American Family Insurance The Lehi Round-Up Baby Contest will be held on Tuesday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Legacy Center. Registration fee is $5. Register online at www.lehi-ut.gov/discover/roundup/baby-contest (cards only) or at the event (cash and cards).

The theme of the contest is “Take a LOOK. It’s in a BOOK.” Costume attire is not required, but it adds a fun twist. A backdrop will be provided for you to take pictures of your baby.

The judging schedule is as follows. Age is as of June 23, 2015.

Popular comedian Keith Stubbs to perform Stand-up comedian Keith Stubbs will bring his brand of comedy to Lehi on Tuesday, June 23, when he provides a public performance at 7 p.m. at Willowcreek Middle School.

Entry is limited to the first 900 people.

Stubbs set aside a career working as a stock broker for PaineWebber in New York and Los Angeles to pursue his lifelong dream of being a stand-up comedian and has never looked back. It didn’t take long for Stubbs to get noticed by talent agents and producers. Less than two years from when he first took the stage, Stubbs performed twice on A&E’s “ An Evening at the Improv” and on Comedy Central.

Stubbs loaded up his Geo Metro and took his comedy nationwide, performing at comedy clubs from coast to coast and nearly everywhere in between. On average, he spent 44 weeks out of the year performing at clubs all across the country. Stubbs developed a routine of smart, quick-witted comedy that quickly landed him headlining gigs at numerous comedy clubs as well as spots performing on national TV and radio programs. Stubbs has opened in concert for Joan Rivers, Jim Gaffigan, Trace Adkins, Sinbad, Gladys Knight, Frank Caliendo, Lewis Black, Little Big Town, Joel McHale and many more.

Stubbs was selected to perform in the Boston International Comedy Festival, FunnyFest and the Calgary Comedy Festival.

In 2002, he was selected as one of only 10 comedians to perform for the Olympic athletes at the 2002 Winter Olympics at the Olympic Village in Salt Lake City. Now a resident of Ogden, Stubbs has twice been named “Best Comedian” by City Weekly and “Funniest Comedian” by the Standard-Examiner newspaper. He was also a semi-finalist in Comedy Central’s Laugh Riots comedy competition.

In 2004, Stubbs’ voice hit the radio airwaves in Salt Lake City. He gained a loyal following of listeners eager to tune in every morning to “The Stubbs Show” for their daily dose of comedy.

Outdoor movie screening set As part of the 2015 Round-Up celebration, residents are invited to enjoy an outdoor movie screening on Wednesday, June 24, at 9 p.m. at Vets Ballpark Those attending will be able to enjoy the family comedy “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.” The movie is rated PG and is one hour and 21 minutes long.

Stock Parade an annual Lehi tradition Every year on the Thursday of the Round-Up celebration, the streets of Lehi revert back to horse and buggy days as hundreds of riders and horses pulling wagons participate in the annual Stock Parade. This parade is one of the longest running in Utah.

This year’s Stock Parade will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 25.

It will begin at Wines Park and end at the Rodeo Grounds. Pull on your boots, grab your hat and come join in this Western tradition.

Enjoy unique Miniature Float Parade

One of the best-loved Round-Up traditions is our famous miniature floats that no one else has. It’s what makes Lehi unique.

The floats are made by LDS ward volunteers, pulled by volunteers and carry hundreds of smiling children through the parade.

It is a must-see every year. The concession money from the rodeo returns to the wards that build a float to help cover the costs.

This year’s Miniature Float Parade will be held on Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m. With the theme “Take a Look, It’s In a Book,” the floats will have designs based on popular books.

This year’s Lehi Round-Up 5K and Kids Mile will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 7:30 a.m. with the start and finish lines at Lehi High School. Grandparents, toddlers, infants in strollers - all are welcome to be part of this run/walk. There will be cash prizes for the top finishers in male and female categories and medals for age group winners. Shirts will be provided for all participants (not guaranteed for registrations after June 17). There will be great post-race food and entertainment. Chuck Wagon Breakfast The 2015 Lehi Round-Up Chuck Wagon Breakfast will be held on Saturday, June 27, from 7 to 10 a.m. at Wines Park.

Cost is $5. The event is being presented by the Lehi High School Booster Club.

Grand Parade

The 2015 Grand Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 27. The parade will begin on the northeast corner of Wines Park and travel south to 200 North, then west on 200 North. It will then go south on 300 West, east on Main Street and north on Pioneer Drive (500 East).

Family Fun Day

Sponsored by Cascade Collision, Abbington Manor, Simmons Floorcraft, Tabitha’s Way, Ascent Academies of Utah This event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wines Park. There will be entertainment, bounce houses, face painting, a boutique and more. Wrist bands for the bounce house activities will be available for $5. The police department will be holding a prescription drug roundup and have child identification kits for parents to make. Also, the arts council will be raising money for sound panels.
