The clean comedy associated with the ventriloquist act was a refreshing performance that included a live dog and several versions of “Dummies” that had the audience laughing and clapping repeatedly. The performance started at 7:30 pm. and lasted until about 8:45 pm. when intermission occurred. After about a 15 minute break, the band started up again and Murphey sang until about 10:20 pm. opportunity for women Veterans of all branches of the military to be able to gather together and socialize. After lunch, the

Phytoplankton make more than half of the oxygen in our world.

Think of it this way, every time you take four breaths, two of those breaths came from oxygen made by phytoplankton through photosynthesis. So even if you live far from the ocean, you depend on it to survive!

Plankton is made up of tiny, usually one-celled plants and small water animals such as larvae and eggs. Zooplankton and other small marine creatures eat phytoplankton and then become food for fish, crustaceans, and other larger species.

Obituaries

Kay O’Banion

Roberta “Kay” O’Banion, 81, of Huntsville, Texas went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 3, 2022. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, friend, grandmother and g r e a t - g r a n d m o t h e r.

Kay was born September 21, 1940 in Jacksonville, Texas.

Her parents were A.C. and Katie Potts. Kay graduated from Carlisle High School and attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. She worked for nearly ten years as the secretary to the Director of the Children’s ministry at First Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas. She also volunteered for over twenty-five years in the Children’s Ministry there.

She was married to John William O’Banion for 46 years. Their blended family included her children Terry Durrett, Kathy Harrington, DeeAnn Powell, and John’s children Brad O’Banion, and Susan Hall. They resided many years in

Pasadena, Texas.

After retirement, Kay and John moved to Huntsville, Texas.

They volunteered with Campers on Mission.

They would help build and repair churches or church camps all around Texas. This was a true ministry for them, where they built many lifelong friendships. Kay also volunteered for over twenty years at Huntsville Memorial Hospital. She was a devout Christian woman who shared God’s word and worked to see others become believers and followers of Christ.

Kay is survived by her sister, Margaret Peacock and her husband Raymond, her brother Bud Potts and wife Mary. She is also survived by her children, Susan (Jason) Hall, Rosie O’Banion, Terry (Renea) Durrett, Kathy (BJ) Harrington and DeeAnn (Lance) Powell.

Grandchildren Erin (Colin) DuCharme, Lauren Hall, Kelly O’Banion, Heather (Rick) Scammon, Matthew Durrett, Sara (Michael) O’Beirne, Mandi (Ash) Anderson, Clay Harrington, Andrew (Mary) Woitena, Mason Powell, Dawson Powell, and Caitlyn Woitena. There are nine great-grandchildren, one great-

great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Barbara Potts and sister Bobbie Mason and her husband Ed Mason.

JoAnn Wells

Jo Ann Fossett Wells, age 86, passed away on June 3, 2022, in Huntsville, Texas surrounded by family.

She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on January 14, 1936, the only child of Otis and Arta Fossett. She graduated from Phillips High School and Howard College (now Samford University), where she sang in the Acapella choir.

It was there that she met Frank Wells. Earlier, both felt God’s call to missions, and they fell in love and married on January 21, 1956. They spent the 1960s ministering in the country of Indonesia. They served churches in Alabama, Texas, and Georgia. Jo Ann also worked as a receptionist in a dental office and school secretary. In her 50s, Jo Ann went back to

school and earned a master’s degree in speech pathology, and served for many years in school districts in Dothan and Enterprise, AL. She was a faithful church member and a beloved Sunday School teacher for a women’s class at First Baptist Enterprise. Jo Ann was a life-long learner who loved to read. She cared deeply about hunger, poverty, and injustice, and was extravagantly generous with her time, prayers and finances to people and organizations who serve the disadvantaged.

Jo Ann was a devoted, kind and gracious mother to her four daughters and an adoring grandmother and g r e a t - g r a n d m o t h e r.

She was a tireless supporter of their every endeavor and an unfailing source of comfort and grace during hard times. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cyndi, and her husband, Frank, and is survived

by Lisa Wells Dayball, Edie Wells (Bob Maninger), and Jaletta Wells Parsley (Larry Parsley). She is also survived by grandchildren Micah Melton (Sarah), Sam Dayball (Sarah), Drew Parsley (Hayley), Jack Parsley, Timothy Parsley, and Laurel Parsley, step-grandchildren Laura Maninger and

Clay Maninger, as well as two great-grandchildren, June Parsley and Benjamin Dayball.

Jo Ann’s life and legacy will be celebrated at a memorial service on Saturday, June 18, at 12:00 pm, at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 Normal Park Drive, Huntsville, TX 77340.

Ms. Ruby was born August 1, 1931 in Montgomery, Louisiana to Milton and Mae Lasyone. She was the youngest of six siblings. She married her husband Dock Nick and became a mother in 1948, giving birth to eight children in Louisiana.

In the late 70’s she moved to Huntsville, Texas and spent the next forty years working at First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, Tomorrow’s Promise and First Presbyterian Church in childcare nurturing so many in our community. We all thank our Heavenly Father for blessing her with us here on earth for 90 years with a loving, beautiful and caring soul.

She is survived by six children; Patsy Hunt, Lawanda Fredieu, Patricia White, Margie Davis, Tony Nick, Missy Hendricks and several nieces and nephews. She loved and helped raise fifteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren, and eleven great-great grandchildren that Ruby Marie Lasyone Nick Ruby Marie Lasyone were blessed to call Nick was peacefully her Nanny. received by her Heavenly Father on June

Sally Gene Reynolds

On June 8, 2022, Sally Gene Reynolds (nee McBride) was gingerly carried into Heaven in the arms of the Great Shepherd. Sally was born 83 years ago on October 16, 1938 in Bastrop, Louisiana. She met George Randolph Reynolds during her senior year at Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas and the couple were married on January 7, 1958. Their 64-year marriage was a testimony of faithfulness as they raised a family of six and worked all over Texas in addition to Wyoming, New Jersey, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, and Colorado. She earned her PHT “Putting Hubby Through” degree while George studied engineering at Lamar University.

Sally’s life was distin-

guished by service to her Savior. She taught the Good News Club/ Backyard Bible Club during summers in Arizona, taught English to international students at Champion Forest Baptist Church, painted a nursery mural at North Oaks Baptist Church and a life-size nativity scene while living in Bryan, and worked in the library at Memorial Baptist Church. She was especially devoted to the Friendship Singers where she helped spread the love of God through song.

Sally was an enthusiastic crafter and especially delighted in making handmade greeting cards for family and friends. A traveler at heart, she was filled to the brim with adoration for God’s creation to include pink roses and majestic mountains.

Above all else, Sally emulated Christ in her love for babies and children. This love was displayed to countless young mothers when she served as a counselor at the Crisis Pregnancy Cen-

ter in Bryan. Sally’s love for children made her a wonderful mother and grandmother that relished the opportunity to snuggle her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at every opportunity. She has now exchanged those snuggles for the warm embrace of the Savior. She is not lost for we Christians will find her before the Throne when our own race is over.

Sally was preceded in death by her father and step-mother Jesse and Margaret McBride, her mother and step-father Sally and Wilfred “Wick” Adams, sister-in-law Margaret Reynolds, and her granddaughter Lily Reynolds. She is survived by her husband George Reynolds, step-brother and sister-in-law Dr. David and Peggy Simmons, sister-in-law Judy Reynolds Warner, son Dr. Randy Reynolds and wife Michelle, daughter Linda Jones and husband Robert, son Dr. Philip Reynolds, daughter Julie Emr and husband Rob, 12 grandchildren, and

the traditional stuff like rags pulled from a box and also included some live animals like birds and a bunny rabbit.

Participants from the audience were invited onstage to assist in the various magic tricks and even the ventriloquism.

All in all, it was a very fun, clean, family oriented way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

no way that he could play all of his hits, but he hit the highlights including “I Just Want to be a Cosmic Cowboy”, “What’s Forever For”, and he ended the night with his most popular song “Wildfire”. The stories behind the music

were as entertaining as the music itself and when he told about his Mother lying on her deathbed and giving her wedding ring to his Daughter in Law, you could have heard a pin drop in the decades old building.

Sunday Observations by Christy

As a kid, my grandparents and great grandparents had magnificent yards.

Beautiful gardens.

Gorgeous houseplants. I couldn’t grow a twig farm to save my life back then, and honestly mom couldn’t either.

Running joke in our family is about the day leaves fell off a silk plant in our living room….. she killed a fake plant. This was some 45-50 years ago.

After mom retired, she began to grow magnificent plants on

her porch. We were all baffled at how suddenly she could grow anything. She moved in here, and honestly, I’ve been impressed with our porches. Plants and flowers blooming everywhere. But realistically, I’m the one who does 80% of the watering if not more.

I managed to get five lemon trees to sprout from seeds and you would have thought I got the lotto.

As I stand outside now, watering, picking dead flowers off,

and messing with the pets, I can’t help but remember my grandparents of yesteryear.

How my sweet Papaw talked me through planting most of the trees I have now, and when I lost one to Ike he told me he knew it would happen. I asked why wasn’t I told this, he grinned and said, you had already planted it before I knew, or I would have.

After many months of this I have also come to realize that growing plants is a lot like growing kids. Takes patience. Takes time.

Proper attention, food and water, and knowing when you may hurt more than help by jerking it up too quick. You see, growing all these plants has made me realize…..with age comes patience. And the biggest obstacle to growing weeds, plants, a farm, or kids….. is patience.

Seems as though that “crazy old lady with all the plants” now resides at my house.

And she ain’t the one that keeps us on our toes…… she…. Is me!!! Mom is innocent of this one.

Plants are calming though. Challenging.

They can surprise you with their beautiful blooms….. once you remember that in order to get them….

You must invest the time, the water, to bring about a beautiful blooming season.

DON’T MESS WITH FAWNS!

This time every year, whitetail and mule deer fawns begin arriving throughout Texas.

Practically every county having suitable deer habitat will experience it.

Most will be whitetails.

Despite efforts by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), outdoor writers, and many newspapers – totaling over 100,000 words of copy – untold numbers of people still think seeing a fawn alone means it’s abandoned. Too many want to help it.

That’s admirable.

But unnecessary. And could be detrimental

to the fawn’s safety.

You don’t want to do that, do ya?

Fawns are born without scent. That helps protect them from predators. Otherwise, they are helpless when born. They aren’t capable of running fast enough to avoid capture, making them easy prey for coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, and even domestic dogs that stumble across them. I still regret something I observed years ago.

Eating lunch on the ranch porch, I heard a frantic bleating sound across the hay meadow. Putting the glasses on it, I saw two large dogs chasing a doe. I jeeped down to assist the doe.

I had never seen these dogs before.

They abandoned the chase when I drove up. One growled at me. The doe ran off into the brush. Then I saw the fawn -- It lay dead a few feet away.

The dog that growled had blood around its mouth.

The other dog came when I called, and I got an address off the collar tag. The killer ran off. The friendly dog climbed into the jeep when invited and I took it home – about a mile away. No one was home, so I put it in the fenced back yard and left a note.

The owner later called and strongly denied that his dog could have done it since it was “inside the fenced yard all day!” The man calmed down when he realized I

had read his dog’s tag -- the only way I knew where it lived -- and had brought it home.

And my description of the other dog was a dog his dog often ran with.

Yes, dogs can kill fawns.

Does hide their little ones in high weeds or landscaping. The does then take a break from mothering newborns to grab a meal themselves -- and a little

well-needed rest from their duties. Human mothers Human interference may nullify the lack of scent, however, making fawns more vulnerable to detection. LEAVE THEM ALONE WHERE YOU FIND THEM! Most of the time, their mammas will be back.

Lifestyle vive. Heat, drought, disease, and other factors take more of a toll than those mothers that have been hit by a car and can’t return.

Texas is suffering from its typical summertime drought and does may have to hunt nourishment longer than usual. Like human mothers, they remember where they left their babies.

They’ll be back.

Can I Give You A Hand?

I pulled into the county dump to unload a large matted up ball of barbed wire. Another man, Max, got there when I did and offered to help. I only had one leather glove in the truck. However, the other man only had one glove in his truck! Together we safely got the wire into the dumpster, shook hands, and left with a smile.

“Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9) This picture of a knock-kneed newborn fawn illustrates how vulnerable fawns can be. It’s unlikely it could even outrun a purse dog. With many fawns being born in or near Texas suburban neighborhoods now which formerly were deer habitat, it’s important for fawns to be left alone. HEY, can I take a week off in this column writing department? I have been thinking for over a week about what I’m going to write in this week’s column and there is just nothing that really inspires me. I’m thinking to myself that I’m either complaining about something or boring you with the details of my poor pathetic life that I lead. And speaking of a poor pathetic life, I really don’t have anything scheduled for like the next two months. It seems like since the first of February when things burst loose at the seams for Spring, I have had multiple things to do on the weekends and most involved some amount of play with a little bit of work, but now........ nothing. Literally the only thing on my calendar is the Texas Press Association convention at the end of July. The end of JULY........that’s seven weekends from now. Surely I can find something to do on a

couple of those Friday, Saturday, and Sundays.

Weekends are three days.......right??

I’ll keep looking for something and if you guys come up with anything, just let me know about it so that I don’t go completely crazy by staying home all of the time.

With the price of this fuel these days, I’m not exactly sure how far I want to go anyway.

I may have to find a way to entertain myself while I’m catching up on some projects around the house. I’ve really got quite a bit to get caught up on, but it sure is a lot more fun to run off to a rodeo, a bull riding, or a concert. I was thinking about going up to Cheyenne Wyoming to go to Cheyenne Frontier Days, but a quick check of the calendar placed it squarely on top of the Texas Press Association Convention. Imagine that, nothing to do for seven weekends and then the two events that I would

like to go to fall on the same weekend. Oh well, work before play, so I’m going to the Press Convention. Since I had nothing to do, I thought about hopping a plane to Vegas one weekend for a quick trip. I checked airfare and almost had a heart attack. What used to be a $150 trip is now in the $400 range.

I guess jet fuel has gone up also. Then I got really nervous as I thought about the two trips that I normally take in the late Fall, early Winter. I usually go to Vegas for the bull riding finals in November and then the National Finals Rodeo in December. I checked on flights for those dates and they were a little better, in the $300 range, but still considerably higher than last year. I went ahead and booked my room for both trips and we’ll see how the airfare thing plays out. I may have to ride in the back of a horse trailer and take care of some horses for a few days in

I’m going to have to check on some things that are local and some things that I haven’t had the chance to do in quite a while. I’m kinda

Walker County Press-Page 14 missing my old buddy George Dearbonne and his band Branded. I haven’t heard them play in several months. With this new unplugged leg that has circulation, I may be able to dance two songs in a row instead of having to rest inbetween songs. That would be a good experiment to try in the next few weeks. I’m going

to quit writing and go check their schedule to see where they are playing in the next month.

I’m figuring that I’m going to find a way to entertain myself and won’t be staying home EVERY weekend. Who knows, maybe something exciting will happen in my life. Till next time, I’m..........Wade in the Shade.
