The 16 year old is a Sophomore at New Waverly High School and her favorite thing about the Walker County Fair is the Special Kids Rodeo. Her reign will extend throughout the 2022 Fair and until next year’s Fair when she will crown her successor. The 1st runner up was Kate Phillips and she is an 18 year (contd on page 8)

ments from last week are also as followed.

The individuals named have been magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them.

However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with

committing. Also not everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Walker County, but perhaps was simply arrest-

ed in Walker County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Walker County.

officer approached the driver of the vehicle, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was occupied by the driver, Alvaro Ortiz-Beltran, and a passenger, Peter Bellos. As a result of their investigation, the officers developed probable cause to search the vehicle. During their search the officers located a large amount of marijuana in the trunk of the vehicle. Officers also located a pistol in the vehicle.

Ultimately, the officers arrested both Ortiz-Beltran and

Bellos with Possession of Marijuana.

After placing the suspects in custody, officers were able to weigh the marijuana and found the weight to be 45 pounds. Both Ortiz-Beltran and Bellos were charged with Felony 3rd Degree Possession of Marijuana due to the total weight of the marijuana. Additionally, Bellos was charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon which is a Misdemeanor A. A 3rd Degree Felony carries a possible punishment of 2 years to 10 years imprisonment in the

Texas Department of Criminal Justice and a possible fine of up to $10,000.

A Misdemeanor A carries a possible punishment of up to 1 year in jail and a possible fine of up to $4000.

Chief Kevin Lunsford said, “We are always happy to get drugs off our streets and highways, especially this amount. We are proud to have such a good working relationship with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office so that we can collaborate in keeping the citizens of Huntsville and Walker County safe.”

The 2020 PRCA World Champion Tie-Down Roper was the last one out in the finals and delivered a run rodeo fans won’t forget. He stopped the clock in 7.4-seconds to capture his first Rodeo Austin title, nudging out second place John Douch by four tenths of a second.

“It seems like I haven’t won a big rodeo in forever. So, I really wanted to get the win here in Austin,” said Mayfield, 21. “You know my horse (Rampage) worked great and the calves were good.

“There were a lot of tough guys going at it tonight. To be last out is kind of good because I knew exactly what I needed to do. When I backed in, I said I want to win first right here and I made it happen.”

The title in Austin is Mayfield’s first rodeo win since Nov. 21 in Tatum, Texas. He said things are headed back

in the right direction and his star-studded horse Rampage is a big reason why he was able to pick up the key NFR Playoff Series presented by Pendleton Whisky win.

“I’d say he’s responsible for 75 percent of my success and I trust him so much,” he said.

“To me he’s the best horse out there and he works the best every time. I never have to do anything special because I knows he’s going to do his job and I just have to do mine.”

It’s been anything but an easy week for Mayfield. As he arrived in Austin, he received a phone call that a wildfire had sparked near his home in Lipan, Texas, and was headed directly for his property.

“It was scary, to be honest roping was really the last thing on my mind,” Mayfield said.

“But I just had to block that out and thankfully I had great friends and family back home that got all my stuff off. Thanks to the firefighters and everyone that helped they got it contained a half mile down the road from my place. So, you know it

“I’m definitely after gold buckle No. 2 and I’m hungry for it this year,” he said. “There’s no doubt about that.”

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center Hosts “Fishing Fools Day”

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is the perfect place to kick off the month of April with “Fishing Fools Day,” an event celebrating all things fishing. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 2 at the TFFC in Athens.

The event begins with the annual “Spawning Run,” a one-mile family run on a special route up the hatchery ponds and down the wetland trail followed by a day packed with fishing-related activities.

“There is something for everyone, whether it be a first-time angler or long-time fishermen looking to try something new, like fly fishing or bowfishing,” said Kate Barkalow, TFFC Education and Interpretation Coordinator.

Anglers can test their skills on a casting

course and get fishing tips from the experts. In addition, attendees can learn more about some of the Inland Fisheries Division’s fish sampling techniques such as electrofishing.

“We are really excited to celebrate all the different types of fishing and fish with the many diverse people who enjoy them,” Barkalow said. “We’re thrilled to be able to host this family-friendly event here at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center.”

The TFFC is located in Athens and includes a working fish hatchery, 300,000 gallons of aquariums focusing on underwater wildlife in the state, recreational fishing ponds and fisheries science exhibits.

It is home to the Toyota ShareLunker program, which invites anglers to donate 13-poundplus-sized largemouth

bass for research and breeding purposes. The TFFC also houses the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame which honors individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to freshwater fishing in Texas.

The Texas Game Warden Museum, where visitors can learn about the history of the organization and current Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game warden operations, is also located at the TFFC. In addition, the TFFC also facilitates the annual Fish Art Contest in Texas, which is part of a conservation education program designed to spark the imaginations of students while providing valuable lessons about fish and the importance of conserving Texas’ aquatic resources.

Meet the Albatross The wandering albatross is the world’s largest flying bird.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a massive soup of plastic waste floating in the sea. It’s growing larger all the time, harming birds, fish and people, too!

A watershed is not a building.

It is an area of land that collects rain and snow. The water then drains into bays and from there into the ocean where it joins large ocean currents.

A Sea of Troubles

Plastic from the west coast of North America floats down creeks and rivers into the Pacific Ocean. There it joins the North Pacific Gyre which flows clockwise into a large circle.

When it reaches its hungry chick, the albatross regurgitates the food. The chick then pulls food out of the parent’s mouth to eat.

(Gross to us, but perfectly normal for these birds.)

But albatross are also swallowing dangerous plastic waste when scooping up seafood. One bird researcher saw an adult albatross regurgitate a toothbrush and its chick ate it. Chicks are not able to regurgitate food or other materials out of their stomachs and the plastic food stays there, making them sick and killing them.

Obituaries

Ronald Leroy Whitlock, II Ronald L. Whitlock, II passed away in Dallas on March 18 after an intense year-long battle with blood cancer.

Born on March 27, 1975, to Marilyn and Ronald I, Ronnie grew up as his dad’s right-hand man and top assistant. He learned about woodworking and all sorts of other handy skills from his dad, whom he greatly enjoyed spending time with.

After graduating from Huntsville High School, he married Angela Rigamonti and they had three beautiful daughters: Megan, Sarah and Taylor.

Ronnie obtained a bachelor’s and then master’s degree from Sam Houston State University before embarking on a career in computer network engineering. He obtained the top networking accreditation available, the CCIE, and was employed by Cisco Systems at the time of his death.

He enjoyed woodworking and handyman projects, flying his Cessna 172 Skyhawk, playing the drums and exploring different cities and places to eat. But most of all, Ronnie loved being a dad.

He was so proud of his three girls and spent as much time with them as he could.

Ronnie met his wife, Jennifer in 2019 and they were married in 2021. They enjoyed traveling the U.S. before the pandemic, then spent lots of happy evenings on their porch or driving

around in the UTV enjoying the Central Texas countryside where they made their home.

While he was battling cancer and throughout his frequent hospitalizations during the past year, Ronnie impressed his physicians and nurses with his charm and good-natured attitude, even during challenging circumstances.

He never quit fighting, not even to the last minute.

In addition to his wife and daughters, he is also survived by his mother and sisters Mandy Nelson and Lisa Darsey. Ronnie was preceded in death by his father

Patricia Ann Brice Patricia was born in Leesville, Louisiana on September 17, 1939 to Samuel Edward Parker and Violet Kathleen Harrison-Parker.

At an early age, she became a member of the family of her elder sister, Ruby Duke (husband Ellis Duke, children: Sandra, Ellis Jr. and Ruby Ann) in Splendora, TX. On July 21st, 1956, Patricia married James Marvin Brice and they were wed for a very happy 65 years and 8 months.

Patricia and Jim soon produced four lovely children: Denise Gayle Wolfe, the eldest- now deceased, who was a laboratory technician for HMH. Denise had one daughter Deonna Andre (husband Rob and two boys: Miles and Ethan); John Michael Brice, a Houston fire fighter for 35 years, now retired, married to Debbi Brice; Eva Renee

Brice-Spillman, the youngest daughter, employed by TDCJ, with two children: Paige and John Raymond, Jr.; and Bradley Alan Brice, the youngest, manager in a LaPorte, Tx chemical plant, who is married to Kristi Brice and has three children: Maya, Zoe, and Sydra .

Patricia always portrayed compassion and unconditional love for those whom she encountered. She dearly loved her own children and had a special place in her heart for other children, much as if they were her own. She was a devout Christian who invited the Lord into her heart at a young age. Pat spent several years working with young children and being involved in many other activities for the churches she and Jim attended.

Patricia developed diabetes many, many years ago. She fought and struggled with it quite well. However, she was finally overcome by diabetic ketoacidosis. At 7:25PM on March 21, 2022, she made her departure from Earth, and stepped into heaven with Jesus.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Violet Parker, her sister Ruby Duke, and her daughter Denise Wolfe.

She is survived by her husband, James Marvin Brice; her two sons: Mike and Brad and their families; her daughter Eva Renee Brice-Spillman and her two children; her “sister’’ Sandra Duke Hales; Sandy’s daughter, Wendy Hales Everett; “sister” Ruby’s children; Stephen Blackman and Stephanie Blackman - Lawrence; her “brother’’ Ellis Duke, his wife Linda Duke, their children Michael Wayne Duke, Crystal Duke Dubose; and her sister Sharon and her husband Don Jaggers. Also, she is survived by Deonna Andre and her family; and

many others whose lives she has touched.

George Delphia Miles, Jr. George D. Miles, Jr, 83, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away on March 23, 2022. He was born to George and Mildred Maltby Miles on June 26, 1938 in Jacksonville, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his wife Beth, and parents George and Mildred Miles.

He is survived by son Scott Miles and wife Sheri of Huntsville, Texas; granddaughters Kathryn Altom and husband Marshall, of Huntsville, Texas; Emily Eberle and husband Matt, of Hays, Kansas; stepsons Rusty Cosby and wife Michelle of Kerrville, Texas; and Randy Cosby of Crockett, Texas; great-grandchildren, Walker Altom, of Huntsville, Texas; and Londyn, Greyson, and Owen Eberle of Hays, Kansas; sister Louann Miles of Houston, Texas; and niece Jordan (J.R.) Carson. In addition, he is survived by many other family members and friends who loved him.

George graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism. He then attended Southwestern Graduate Banking School at Southern Methodist University. The majority of his career was spent in the banking industry, retiring as executive vice president for First National Bank of Huntsville after 22 years before returning to serve as marketing coordinator on a part-time basis.

SHSU Alumni Association in 2006 and was directly involved in the origination of the Alumni Garden, the designation of the “Presidents Tree,” the completion of the Bell Tower, the restoration of the Old Main pipe organ and its installation in the Peabody Library, and the initial establishment of regional alumni clubs that led to greater participation in the association. He also initiated an alumni committee that organized the successful movement to prevent any possible name change for SHSU. George’s work within the university and Huntsville communities was vast. He received the Huntsville Citizen of the Year Award in 2007 and February 21, 2008 was proclaimed George Miles Day in the City of Huntsville. He also received the SHSU Alumni Association Service Award in 2008, the Edwin G. Sandhop Spirit of Huntsville Award in 2013, the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce Mance Park Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and was named a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow in 2014. In 2018, he was named to the Wall of Honor in the SHSU College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In addition to serving as chair of the board for the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce, Miles also served as founding chair of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Advisory Board, as a member of SHSU’s President’s Circle, the Executive Leadership Council, Sam Houston Memorial Museum Board and the Mass Communication Advisory Board.

Miles’ love for SHSU knew no bounds as he was always seen wearing orange and even named his cocker spaniel, Sammy. His favorite hobby was volunteering for the community.

Oneil McCaffety

Oneil McCaffety passed away on Saturday, March 5th, 2022 in Castle Rock, Colorado. He was 88 years old. Oneil was born in Walker County, Texas to R.H. and Edna Mae McCaffety on November 22, 1933.

Growing up with his family in Huntsville, Texas, Oneil graduated from Huntsville High School where he was known as the “the guy with the educated toe” kicking field goals for the football team with his bare foot. He graduated from Sam Houston State College, moving to Sour Lake Texas where he pursued a career teaching math and physics. After joining NASA Oneil became a part of the Mission Planning and Analysis Division and was there during the Apollo launch.

His career at NASA lasted almost 23 years.

Oneil moved to Castle Rock Colorado in 1984 to marry Janice Hall McCaffety. He worked as a home builder in the Castle Rock area before retiring. Oneil loved to ski, play golf, and to participate in any activity where he could be outdoors. He spent countless hours watching his grandsons play baseball, football, soccer and LaCrosse. After retirement, he and a friend organized a non-profit horseback

Walker County Press-Page 11 riding program for developmentally disabled children where he was the director for 20 years.

Despite living in Colorado for the past 38 years, Oneil was always a Texan at heart and longed to move back there one day.

Oneil is survived by his wife, Janice McCaffety, 4 stepdaughters, 12 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Edward (Joe Mac) McCaffety, his sister June, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Amanda Jane Nethery

Amanda Jane Nethery was born April 19, 1985, and she went to live with Jesus on March 13, 2022, after a lifelong struggle with several severe illnesses.

She was born at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas. Her family moved immediately to Huntsville, Texas, where she attended school. Upon graduation, she attended and

graduated from Texas A&M. She was a fourth generation Aggie on both sides of her family and very proud of her Aggie heritage. She then attended and graduated from Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth with a Master’s degree.

Amanda’s true passions were going on mission trips and travel. She went on ten mission trips with the Jesus Film Project, a division of Cru(Campus Crusade), raising all funds necessary to get to the mission field, do the work assigned, and get herself home. She could also talk about all the African, European and Asian airports and the best (and worst) places to eat in those airports.

She had grown in her love for nursing. When she left this earth, she was actively involved in taking nursing courses, and was working as a CNA, as well as substitute teaching, which she swore she would never do because her mother was a teacher.

Amanda hated to be known as “the sick girl.”

Consequently, most people never knew

about all the different conditions and illnesses she was plagued by. She loved her family, taking every opportunity to join in frequent family gatherings. She and her daddy loved to go eat wings, go to movies, and find adventures to go on.

Amanda was preceded in death by her grandparents Joel and True Reese; Bettyanne Pratt Nethery; M.J. Nethery, Jr.; and Clyde Reese.

She is survived by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. M. J. Nethery (Skipper and Cindy); her brother and wife Nicholas and Jennifer Nethery; and, her four nephews, Clyde, Graham, Bryce and Reid. She loved those little boys like they were her own, and they loved her right back. Also surviving are uncles Neil(Stacy) Nethery, Larry(Carol) Nethery, and Carolyn Reese.

The family of Amanda Jane Nethery appreciate all the support and acts of kindness we are receiving during this time. Amanda fought the good fight (2 Timothy 4:7), but we will miss her forever.

Sunday Observations by Christy

I write often about the perks of aging.

The downsides. The happy and the sad.

But can we talk about convenience???

In the process of mom moving in with me, I have found myself a lot more conscientious to things that may be easy for me but more difficult for her. Just like we look for tripping hazards, the outlook shifts to can we find another way to do this yet easier.

She also does these logical things I think is silly. Like hook up ice makers…. More on that in a second.

Well with age seems the ability to grow plants emerges. I swear this woman couldn’t grow a silk plant when I was in school.

Suddenly I’m growing a forest over here. So that led me to looking for hoses to water with that may be more light weight.

That led me to

expandable hoses.

I’ve seen them. I thought they would be junk. I researched because they are not cheap. I asked my brother, he already has two. See he’s smarter than me.

Insert eye rolls.

So I bit the bullet and bought a 100 ft expandable hose. Hooked it up this morning and y’all…… that’s the coolest thing EVER! First it only weighed 5 lbs and that included the free sprayer that came with it. I hook it up and go to water the plants and it literally grows as you walk. No tugging No fighting just a lightweight hose that kind of follows you.

Can I add when you turn it off….. it automatically draws back up???

YEP no rolling it up, cranking a case to hold it, dragging it anywhere. It was simple!!!!

Now look, don’t be a killjoy. Don’t tell me how yours was awful. At the moment let me live

in my bliss of an easy water hose.

She also wanted the ice maker hooked up to the fridge on the porch. I said why, I’ve not had an ice maker for the 25 years I lived here. It would be fine. But alas, she’s paying, we hooked it up.

Because you just may want a glass of ice water, after using the hose you bought for them, to water the plants they wanted. You just may find you benefit in the long run, from doing for, and listening to, your parents.

A PLACE TO LAUNCH

Back in the late ‘60s and early 1970s, I was part of an adventurous crew. We were canoe jockeys. Some called us canoe-freaks. Except when the Hill Country streams dried up from drought, we were either on a river or planning the next jaunt. We paddled the Guadalupe, Llano, San Marcos, Colorado – even several times on the Rio Grande --and other streams.

But other folks did, too. A few trespassed onto private or county-restricted land or bridges to launch or

take out. Once, an entire Boy Scout Troop was arrested for taking out their canoes on a county bridge at the end of a float on the Blanco. And, on another trip, shots were fired from the bank. Some considered us “hippies.”

But our bunch was law-abiding, and passionate about the rivers, private property rights and the environment. The Travis County Judge was one of our organizers. The Texas Land Commissioner occasionally accompanied us. Others were lawyers, state employees, and friends. An 80mile float through the Lower Canyons of the Rio Grande included

a State Senator, the Secretary of the Senate, and other officials. About the worst thing anybody ever did was plant a Texas flag on the south bank of an international boundary. He took the flag with us when we left the following morning to avoid an international incident and a second war with Mexico.

We also floated the most photographed part of the river – Santa Elena Canyon.

Water conditions prohibited our passing through the infamous and dangerous “Rockslide”, however. We chose a two-hour portage over and around the rock pile, instead.

Service now requires a permit for canoeists or other Rio Grande floaters. You can no longer just put your craft in anywhere and start paddling. Guides are also now available.

Things are enjoyably different floating and paddling, these days.

Parks and Wildlife gets the credit for leasing 22 access points along popular canoeing and kayaking streams. Some require fees, but they’re reasonable. Readers can find a map and short description on the TPWD website.

Designation of the Texas Paddling Trails has also simplified and expedited planning and floating without breaking the law or encountering the authorities. John Boros is TPWD’s River Access honcho and told me there are now 141 access sites combined among the inland and coastal trails!

The Paddling Trails have been around a while and take a lot of mystery out of planning a trip. It’s not like Burt Reynolds and his three friends sitting around a topographic map wondering what that South Caroline/ Geogia river looked like from the water they were planning to float in the movie “Deliverance.”

And the hillbillies from their adventure are nothing to worry about, either.

Richard has a mobile phone and a regular landline home phone. He told me to always call his mobile phone. So I wondered why he still paid to have his home phone. Richard said, “It only costs a few dollars a month and I need it to call my mobile phone when I can’t find it!”

WAW......No, I didn’t misspell that. It’s supposed to be WAW. It stands for What A Weekend.

Actually, my weekend started on Thursday evening with the Walker County Fair parade that wound its way through Downtown Huntsville. We will have coverage of the parade in next week’s paper because we just had too much stuff for this week’s paper and that was mostly because of the rest of my weekend activities. Friday during the day was pretty slow and I should have used that time for resting in preparation for the activities of the next few days, but I didn’t. Friday evening started off with me attending a tremendous chicken fried steak dinner that was a scholarship fundraiser event and then that was followed by a fantastic rodeo at the Walker County Fairgrounds.

A smart person would have gone home after the rodeo performance, but Noooooooo. I had to stay for the kickoff dance which featured a George Strait look and sound alike. This guy was pretty good and I was asked if I thought

that it was a recording and he was lip singing, but I listened and could tell slight differences and I believe that he was just that good.

The singing was not the problem.......the problem was that I knew the words to every song he sang because they were all George songs and I felt compelled to dance to a bunch of them. I danced more on Friday night than I think I have in the last three years combined.

Saturday morning I had to be up fairly early and catch the Wynne Home Herb Festival and I swear that I told my legs to move, but nothing happened.

That was probably a good thing because when they did decide to move, I found about six hundred muscles that I didn’t even know that I had. I was so sore that it took me several minutes to get from the bedroom to the shower and my house is not that large, in fact it was just the room next to my bedroom. I finally got going and caught a couple of events that morning and then headed out to the Fairgrounds to catch the crowning of the 2022

Walker County Fair Queen before I headed over to some friends for some crawfish. These friends host this really cool event called a fly in and basically, people from all over fly their planes in and spend the day eating crawfish and swapping stories. They have a really cool Easter egg drop from the airplanes for all of the little ones that line the airstrip in anticipation of the plastic eggs falling out of the sky. The weather was perfect and the food and hospitality were wonderful and I don’t know what I did to get an invite, but I sure appreciated it and had a really great time. I left there and went back to the Fairgrounds for the second night’s performance of the rodeo and then dropped in on the Tejano music that was playing inside the main building on the fairgrounds.

Sunday, I was at least able to sleep in a little and then I attended the dedication of the Vietnam Wall Memorial at the Veterans Museum.

We have reported on this wall for quite a while now and basically it’s an 80 percent replica of

the Wall in Washington D.C. This was a project that took thousands of dollars in donations and countless hours of volunteer work to get this to completion, but it is worth every bit of the time and effort that went into this project.

The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the crowd was huge. I have been doing this publishing thing for over 30 years and consequently have attended a lot of ceremonies, but this one ranks right up in the top.

The emotions were all over the place that day

Walker County Press-Page 14 as some were happy that the project was completed and the Museum was able to bring such a project to Huntsville and others would wipe away tears as they found a particular name on the wall out of the 58,000 plus. I missed Vietnam as I was just a pup, but I have several friends that served and have heard way too many memories of the events that took place during that era. It hadn’t completely sunk into my mind until I heard someone utter the comment that with this dedication

comes the fact that this is now hallowed ground for those that made the ultimate sacrifice. It was a perfect end to a really great weekend and if you get the chance, venture by the Veterans Museum and take some time to reflect in front of that wall. We sometimes forget that we live in the greatest Country on Earth, but freedom is not free and some gave all so that the rest of us could enjoy our freedoms.
