The Sam Houston Bearkats are undefeated this year, have made their way through the playoff bracket, and are headed to the Championship Game at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas this Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Bearkats arrived at the current situation by beating Monmouth 21-15 in the first playoff game, then overcoming an old nemesis in North Dakota State by a score of 2420 in the second playoff game that included a fourth down defensive stand to seal the victory, and then coming (contd on page 8)

May 7-8, 2021 at the fairgrounds. The event was a little later than usual due to some planning difficulties thanks

to the Covid situation and the fact that rules for gathering and social distancing were changing on a somewhat daily basis. However, some 35 teams showed up and gave it their best shot to win the championship. The Republican Party of Walker County hosted

their annual Reagan Dinner last Friday, April 30, 2021 at the Walker County

Fairgrounds. The annual event is in celebration of President Ronald Reagan’s birthday and this year’s event provided a full house of attendees. Lt Colonel Allen B. West was the keynote speaker for this year’s program and he was given a surprise introduction by one of his former soldiers who served under his command in Operation Desert Storm.

Many politicians were in attendance including local elected officials, State representative Ernest Bailes, State Representative Steve Toth, and U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady. A wonderful ribeye steak dinner was served and plenty of conversation was held during the three hour event.

Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts had the opportunity to make their own stamps and personal journals. They

also followed clues to find a letterbox on the museum grounds.

There are about 20 letterboxes in and around the Huntsville area. Meanwhile, the Junior and Cadette Girl Scouts learned the basics of compass reading.

They practiced using compasses and played games to help improve their orienteering skills.

The event was a huge success with 45 Girl Scouts in attendance from the Huntsville area as well as some attendees from Conroe and Cypress.

Obituaries

Polly Anna Holbrook Polly Anna Fowler Holbrook was born June 15, 1921 to Seab Reese and Lester Chandler Fowler in Carnesville, Georgia.

She met the love of her life Robert Banks (Tim) Holbrook in 1941 while he was visiting family in Georgia.

After a long-distance courtship and the impending war, Polly boarded a train in Atlanta, Georgia and traveled alone to Chico, California where Tim was stationed with the Army Air Corp and were married on March 25, 1944. After the war, Polly and Tim settled in Beaumont before moving to Houston for Tim to attend Dental School. They settled in Huntsville in June 1954. Polly was active in many volunteer organizations including Huntsville Garden Club, Den Mother for her son’s Cub Scout Pack, and troop leader for her daughter’s Brownie Group. She was also very involved in the

United Methodist Women’s Group at the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Builders Class and later the Joy Class. She loved creating items for Granny’s Kitchen each year. Her happiest times were searching for the next great antique and spending time with her family.

Polly is preceded ln death by her parents, her husband Tim Holbrook, brothers Gene Fowler and James Fowler, and her sister Lou Fowler Robinson.

She is survived by her son Steven Holbrook and wife Dianna, her daughter Leesa Holbrook Williams and husband Tracy. Grandchildren Jason Holbrook and wife April, Jacob Holbrook, Kristin Williams Evans and husband Pete and Allison Williams.

Great Grandchildren Jared Holbrook, Reed Holbrook, Nate Holbrook, Olivia Evans and William (Liam) Evans. Brother Aubrey Fowler and Sister Kathryn Duggan. Polly is also survived by friends who became family Loretta Bradford, her companion and dearest friend for the last seven years and Joenell Durst. These ladies were truly our angels on Earth and we will never forget their loving care.

Larry Don Hortsman Larry Don Horstman, 70, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 7, 2021, while listening to Stairway to Heaven.

Larry is survived by his daughter Alicia Horstman, son Kyle Horstman and wife Lindsay, daughter Jennifer Forman (children Megan, Jacob, and Cameron), grandsons Wyatt Plagens and Grant Horstman, father Lonnie Horstman, brothers Scott and Steve Horstman and their families, bonus daughter Jessica Burns (children Dakota, Brecken, and Malachi), and the Richfield High School Class of 1969.

Larry is preceded in death by his granddaughter Braylee , niece Amanda, and mother Peggy.

Sunday Observations by Christy

I have started this multiple times this week, all along the lines of “our wonderful moms”, and hit a brick wall. So today, I figured out why.

Here is the thing. You shouldn’t celebrate your mom on Mother’s Day, you should celebrate her 365 days a year. And before I get told not all moms deserve celebrating I will say you are right!

So find that maternal person that stepped in, and celebrate them.

Daily.

Just like fathers, celebrate them daily.

We don’t need a special day to do so. We don’t have to cook lunch or make a huge fan fare.

So what do I mean by celebrate them then?

Well let me explain….

Respect them. If they make a request, do it.

I don’t care how dumb you think it is. DO IT. Unless it is downright dangerous, just do it.

Do you know why?

Nope you think I’m going to say because of age, they are your elder, blah blah. And that’s not it.

Do you remember those ridiculous clothes you had to have? The hair

cut? The absurd music?

The countless hours of sitting at your practices, games, recitals? Have you forgotten the trips to the ER when you got hurt doing something you knew better than?

The meals? All of it?

Ok…… maybe you are getting my drift. If your parent or grandparent wants to tell you a story you have heard before, sit down shut up and listen. They want to share some advice you think you know better than? Remember these folks taught you to use a spoon. Listen to their advice.

More than anything….. make time for them.

Go see them. Call them. Bring your kids to see them. Make the time while you have the time. Why??

Because I promise you, glance at Facebook today. Not Twitter. Not Snap or Insta. Glance at Facebook, the one us old people use primarily. While you are scrolling take count.

Of the people saying they miss their mom.

Their grandmother.

Their bonus mom.

Their aunt. Their sister.

Their wife. I promise the magnitude of loss shared on these holidays will take your breath away if you pay attention.

Life is happening folks. Every single day.

I’m blessed. I have my mom, my bonus mom, a kiddo that will spend the day with me, and had my grandmothers far longer than many.

Damn near made it to 50 before I lost the last one. I know when I was younger I didn’t take the time I should have.

I know as well I can’t change that now. What I can do is take the time to make the time.

Happy Sunday peeps, celebrate those you love daily. By showing them respect.

I received an announcement recently about a new .22 caliber rifle being marketed by the CZ USA company. It spoke of the rising interest in small game hunting particularly for squirrels and rabbits.

I’m all for that! There was a time I even promoted hunting for nutria, since they were abundant in southeast Texas, where I lived.

Access to huntable

land having adequate wetlands – preferred habitat for nutria – and the threat of ricochets from rifles or pistols fired over water prevented that from becoming popular.

But squirrel and rabbit hunting have always been high on the lists of myriad hunters. At one time, squirrel hunting was more popular than deer hunting. During the Great Depression, deer were shot for food. It became rare to see whitetails at

all in parts of Texas.

I was 14 before I ever saw one.

My first hunt ever was accompanying Uncle Josh Munro squirrel hunting in the hardwood Beech Creek bottomland at the edge of the Big Thicket one cold, dim morning at about age ten. I didn’t realize the awakening that was taking place. Or what it would lead to.

From then on, I dreamed of hunting the Lawhorn Woods whenever we passed them going to Gal-

Then, as veterans returning from WW II began hunting, the infamous screwworm infestation devastated Texas livestock and deer on into the early ‘60s. Once the tiny, winged beasts were controlled with the release of sterile male flies, Texas Parks and Wildlife’s extensive restocking of deer throughout Texas changed a lot of things.

Photos of kids proudly holding a squirrel or two were being replaced with a young ‘uns first animal kill – a young deer a little younger than the hunter.

As deer mania rose, access, again, became a problem since deer

hunting commanded center stage. More land was leased for the sport that provided the most revenue to landowners. Some deer hunters were reluctant to share turf with squirrel hunters.

The vast forested land in East Texas, though, provided a veritable wonderland for squirrel hunters. Although the namesakes of the Pineywoods themselves offered nothing for squirrels to eat, Chinkapin oaks and other oaks and nut-bearing trees did. Much of it was National Forest land and open to excellent hunting. A lot still is.

Some use shotguns; others .22 rifles. I’ve used both. My preference is a trusty Win-

Lifestyle chester Model 62-A, .22 pump rifle reminiscent of the .22 that Uncle Josh used to introduce me to riflery. The last time I saw him, he was alert, but non-talking. At one point, he smiled and pointed at his .22 pump hanging on the wall. I looked at it, smiled and nodded.

He silently did the same, and pointed at me as he did. I think of him every time I handle my .22 pump.

Squirrel hunting with a rifle is a challenge but makes one a more accurate rifleman in the long run. And a .22 is a great teaching tool for kids.

One they’ll never forget.

Setting The Hook

I was standing beside Leon when his line took off, and he began to reel.

You could tell by the way the rod was bending he had a “bull red” redfish on the other end. When he finally got his prize catch to the surface, we all saw the biggest fish of the day as it “spit” the lure out and swam away.

I thought we were going to have to call 911 to take care of Leon.

Our guide looked at Leon and said, “I think that one would have made the Guinness Book of World Records, but you still have to set the hook!”

What a weekend!!!!! It seemed like it started on Wednesday and maybe it did because it’s hard for me to determine exactly what’s a work day and what’s supposed to be a play day. I have one of the best jobs in the world because I have the privilege of playing while I work. The only problem with this job is that it doesn’t pay much, but I have learned to survive on $0.39 ramen noodles and some of those flavored waters are pretty good. Anyway, back to my weekend. I ended up in Elkhart talking to my new ranch foreman.... don’t that sound impressive.....actually he’s a pretty neat guy that has bailed me out of trouble on a couple of occasions already and he is going to help me when I need him to work my cows and he will do a little fence patching along the way. I finally made it to Huntsville from Winnie via Elkhart and seven hours of traveling with a stop for counting cows and some vittles for me and the kids. After about six hours of sleep, I started my Thursday with an early morning meeting and then ended up at a program for the National Day of Prayer.

Once again, working, but I was able to

squeeze a sandwich out of the deal and it never hurts to get a little extra praying in, especially for me because I need all of the help that I can get. Thursday evening culminated with a little short two hour Huntsville ISD school board meeting.

Friday morning started off with getting Annie to school and then some time in the office to catch up on emails and things like that. Friday evening is generally a fun night for you guys, but I was working. However, it’s really hard to claim attending a Bar-B-Que Cook-off as work, but I was actually working. In all fairness, I did find a way to mix a little fun into the work schedule as I was able to take some pictures with a camera in one hand and hold a rib in the other. The only decision that had to be made was whether to put the rib or the camera down in order to reach for the adult beverage to wash down the delicious samples coming from the cooking teams.

There was also plenty of good music to be heard and of course I had to get up close and personal with the entertainment in order to take a picture for my job. Do you guys

know just how difficult it is to take a good in focus picture while two stepping around the dance floor(pasture)??

Also, I would like to point out that this job has long hours associated with it. I had to stay out way late in order to get all of these pictures and interviews with the cooking teams.

Saturday was no different. I had to be up early in the morning to cover a street fair that was going on in Downtown Huntsville. I wanted to get the opportunity to visit with most of the vendors and then that rolled right into a little event called Wine Down, Shop Small. This was the 10 year anniversary of that event and of course I had to cover it for the paper. Basically, it’s a four hour ordeal where you have to walk around to all of the shops that are around the square in Huntsville and each of the shops have samples of food that has to be tasted in order to make sure that they are representing themselves properly. Things like shrimp cocktail, pulled pork bbq sliders, and mexican food. Each of these shops also has a winery that has samples of their wine available to wash down the food in the event that some of

that food is just not acceptable. I tell you...... this is a tough job and some days I just don’t know how I survive. Of course, plenty of folks are also sampling the food and beverages and that provides ample opportunity to visit with people that are ambling around the square and get their opinions on the festivities which can be incorporated into the articles.

Now, next weekend isn’t looking any better.

Friday afternoon I have to cover a golf tournament and if you think dancing and taking pictures is tough, just try swinging a golf club and taking a picture. One of two things can hap-

Walker County Press-Page 14 pen.....either your picture is out of focus, or your golf shot is sliced off into the woods..... or both. Saturday is going to be tough as well.

The Walker County Fair and Rodeo will be in full swing and I’ll have to take a moment out of my busy schedule to sample the ribeye dinner that they serve every year for the scholarship committee before catching the action of the rodeo(for the article in the paper, of course). Sunday will be a work day as well because I’m going to have to be on the sidelines watching my Sam Houston Bearkats play for the National Championship in the Covid delayed Fall foot-

ball season. It’s another hardship, but somehow I’ll manage to try to get several good pictures from the endzone to help tell the play by play of the game. Monday is the day that all of this work gets organized and placed into the paper and then Tuesday the paper goes to print and is placed in the mail. And then there is Wednesday where this column started in the first place and it just starts all over again. As I said, it doesn’t pay much, but it’s a pretty good job and I’m getting a little too old to be taught new tricks, so I think I’ll just keep on keeping on. Till next time, I’m ...........
