2021 at the gaze

Well, here I am at 9:30 pm. on Monday night and I’m just getting around to writing my column. I guess that I have been later, but I really can’t remember when. It just seems like Spring is when things just get so busy and time just slips away.....either that or I’m a really bad time management person. I’ll go out on a limb and say that maybe it’s a little of both. I was going through my calendar with a friend of mine and she said that she didn’t know if she could keep up with all of those things that I had scheduled. Now, in her defense, she does work a full time plus some job during the week and the weekend has traditionally been a time for her to wind down and catch up on some of her home activities, but I’m ready to go do a little two steppin and maybe indulge in an adult beverage. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that what we were discussing was mostly my social calendar and it didn’t even include all of the regular things like school board meetings, city council, commissioners court, and all of the other things that happen in the newspaper business, but we’ll figure all of those things out in the future. As I reflect on my schedule, both work and play, I realize that it’s a good thing that I don’t work very hard. I mean, I’m not digging ditches, out in the cold or blistering heat, paving roads..... that kind of work because I will be the first to admit that I would absolutely melt if I had to put in a full day’s work. And, I’m talking about melting before the first break of the day, about mid morning. However, I have learned that this business, while it is not physically demanding, is a demanding business. Some days may start with a 7:00 am. meet-

ing and end with a drive home from a football game that’s two hours away from my bed. Sometimes, the in between time is at the office working on the next week’s paper, or it could be chock full of additional meetings that have to be attended just in case some earth shattering news happens. Occasionally, those long days do have the “ I think I’m going to take a little nap” built into them, but that’s pretty rare. One of the perks of this business is that you do get the every so often free ticket to something, but you are usually working the event by writing an article or taking pictures.....or both. Sometimes, it’s just fun to pay full price for a concert and just go and sit in the audience and soak up the atmosphere and good music and let some other young go getter cover the event. I guess that I complain about this business, but when it comes right down to it, I kinda like it...... either that or I don’t know how to do anything else and with my 59th birthday happening this week, I’m too old of a dog to be taught new tricks. Maybe, as I get older, I’ll need to work on that time management thing a little more. Oh wait, there’s a fire alarm. I’ve got to grab a camera and hit the road running. Just as I was planning out the rest of my night to get a little sleep and with my luck I’ll get blocked in by some emergency vehicle and won’t be able to leave the scene. Sleep is overrated anyway. Till next time, I’m.......Wade in the Shade.
