By Wade Thibodeaux The Huntsville ISD Board of Trustees met in a special session on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at 6:00 pm. in the Hawkins Administration Building with only one action item on the agenda. That item was the discussion and approval of an order calling for a special election to be held by HISD on May 1, 2021. The bond election would be for
two propositions totaling $127 Million. Proposition A would be for the renovation of many of the District’s buildings and construction of new and additional facilities at almost every campus in the District. Proposition A is valued at $92 Million. Proposition B would be for a new football stadium, associated support buildings, new tennis courts, and new prac-
tice fields. Prop B is valued at $35 Million. The vote was a unanimous vote with the recurring comments of board members and audience alike that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity because of interest rates being so low and the prospect of new growth of homes in the District. Trustee J.T. Langley commented that he never would have thought that so much could be achieved with such little impact to the taxpayer. The numbers bear out his comments with the estimated tax impact being only $6.22 per month for a $100,000.00 house. HISD Chief Financial Officer Paul Brown informed the board that projections at previous meetings had been lowered and even with conservative estimates of higher interest rates on bonds than current offerings the estimated tax rate had dropped about a penny to $0.0994 or a little less than a (contd on page 11)
