Those vying for the title of King and Queen are Seniors Jadarian White, Ed Bobino, III, Abraham Merino, and Cody McLerran on the Prince side and Sarah Duncan, Destiny Martinez,

Alyssa Wheaton, and Savanna De La Fuente on the Princess side of the Court. The announcement of the King and Queen will be made during the halftime activities of the Hornets and A & M Consolidated game.

The Freshman Prince is Benjamin Hendricks and the Freshman Princess is Ma’Kayla White. The Soph-

omore Prince is Nathan Schweitzer and the Sophomore Princess is Neamiah Conteh, while the Junior Prince is Eli Jones and the Junior Princess is Jenin Borbor. Community Calendar

The Huntsville Public Library will reopen to the public on Monday, October 26, 2020, under the modified hours of 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Mondays through Fridays, following the guidance of City officials.

The facility, located at 1219 13th Street, will only be able to accommodate 50 patrons inside the

building at one time.

Per Governor Greg Abbott’s Executive Order 28, all persons must wear a mask unless they are under the age of 10 or have a medical condition.

Citizens will also be able to take advantage of the library’s book sale which will be also reopened.

Computer access will be available on a first-come, firstserved basis with

limited use to social distance. In light of the safety of staff and citizens, personalized computer assistance will be offered on a limited basis.

Unfortunately, the ever-popular meeting rooms and study room reservations will not be available, and the library’s reading furniture will be inaccessible.

Obituaries

Aubrey Alexis Davis

Aubrey Alexis Davis, age 88, was born in Linden, Cass County, Texas on March 18, 1932 to Fred Aubrey and Alice Geneva Carey Davis. He passed away on October 19, 2020 at his home in Phelps, Walker County, Texas surrounded by his loving family.

Aubrey served in the United States Army from 19471951. In 1955 he married the love of his life, Norma Ramsey.

After the Army, Aubrey worked for a few years with Monsanto in Texas City, but his people loving personality found a better

outlet as a bus driver. He logged thousands of miles criss-crossing the United States. He drove for Greyhound and Trailways Bus Lines and retired after a combined total of forty-five years. He and Norma loved to travel. Aubrey enjoyed flying his own private airplanes, fishing, storytelling and spending time with his family.

Upon retirement, Aubrey and Norma served a two year Family History mission in Mississippi for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, digitizing county records.

Aubrey served in various church callings through the years.

Preceding Aubrey in death are his parents and a sister, Virginia Perry.

Aubrey is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Norma; daughter, Alicia Tykol (Chance) Cunningham; son, Stephen Davis; grandchildren and great-grandchildren,

Jay Flournoy Wilson, 65, of Oakwood, Texas, died Oct. 22, 2020, at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Sundance signed a couple of guitars and they were auctioned off with the first one benefitting the museum and the second one benefiting an organization called Rebuilding Warriors.

The Hornets were only able to manage a field goal in the first quarter and a lone touchdown in the second quarter, but that was enough to take a 10-0 lead into the locker room at the halftime break. Both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter with King missing the extra point attempt and

Huntsville taking a 17-6 lead going into the final frame. The Panthers added another touchdown in the fourth and elected to go for the two point conversion, but failed on that attempt to draw within 5 points of the Hornets at 17-12. The Panthers had one more push as they were inside the 1 yard line twice and

the Hornet defense denied them a touchdown to make the final 17-12.

Covid-19 Update by Darren Grant

Coronavirus caseloads keep spreading out across our state and across the country.

Some places are getting better and some are getting worse.

Locally, Walker County is doing well, though cases are up compared to last week. Sam Houston State University continues to be pretty light in case numbers, with 51 cases over the last week, also a little higher than the week before. In general, though, East Texas as a whole continues to do well.

Meanwhile, El Paso, Wichita Falls, and the Panhandle are still struggling.

They are just

starting to fly patients out of El Paso to other hospitals, because they are running out of room.

The slowdown in cases around here puzzles me, because I haven’t seen much change in what people are doing. Everyone has their habits by now. So what makes the difference? Our attention is drawn to places where cases are growing, but we can learn just as much from places where they are declining.

Around the country, the third wave of coronavirus is in full swing. The country recently topped its previous peak of cases, from back in the second wave in July.

Just like last week, the numbers are worst in the Dakotas and Wisconsin.

What puzzles me about all three states is how the numbers keep going up without a break.

In the past, after cases shot up, people got more careful and things turned around. Not this time.

North Dakota now leads the country in cases per person. Cases have now grown in that state for over three months without ceasing. They were averaging about 50 cases per day in early July.

In early October, it was about 400 per day. Now it’s 800 per day, which is a lot in a state with hardly any people. Counties with hardly nobody, like you’d find in West Texas, are racking up multiple deaths per week. It’s incredible. And things are similar in South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Montana.

This is what worries me most about this third wave. The last wave was self-correcting. Now, in some places, that isn’t happening—so what will bring the cases back down? Fortunately, the virus is taking it easy on us down here in East Texas. We can be thankful for that.

It simply is not worth it. Enjoy the season we are quickly entering, maybe start your meals by saying what each of you are thankful for.

Shed some tears for those lost, not for those differing opinions that boiled over. YOUR OPINION is not the only correct one. But we can discuss that next week.

Woods, Waters, and Wildlife

I did a little social experiment this week.

I asked one day what you all were thankful for. Just one item.

Overwhelmingly, you responded in varying degrees, with family.

Loved ones. Those we hold near and dear.

Then I watched as many attacked others based on their political beliefs and views.

Makes me wonder, what exactly will our holidays look like this year?

The divide is suffocating in our country right now.

Never in my 53 years

did I think people would actually mock, make fun of, verbally attack, and degrade one another........over a mask. Over politics.

Over people you don’t even know. You know what they want you to know, and even at that it is the cleaned up super nice version.

But yet, these people we don’t know, will inadvertently come sit at your table for Thanksgiving.

And drive arguments, fights, and discord.

Sitting there like the Thanksgiving turkey, about to be carved

sharing refreshments and tales of past hunts around a campfire or cabin fireplace, perhaps meeting new hunting mates, and laughing at anything that in a different environment might not even draw a smile.

But in this season, it’s different. We’ve left our cares and unfinished work at the city limits as we journeyed to deer camp. And we’re different people -- at least for this weekend and a few days afterwards.

We’ve abandoned the desperation and discontentment of the 2020 “Pandamit”, become much more likable.

A friend and hunting

buddy, Joe Colbert, referred to the evening before the season opens as the “Deer Hunters’ Ball”.

I don’t have a lease this season but will celebrate the opener around our fire pit with my two hunting dogs and my wife, who has put more meat in the freezer lately than I have.

One year, we went to Johnson’s Trading Post in Bee Cave for supper because that was where some hunters went on that evening.

Bandera formerly had a weekend celebration beginning the night before. It’s on their current calendar, but no information was available. It was a

veritable BLAST! Another time, my girlfriend became miffed because I got off a plane from a business trip, kissed her hello and headed to the deer lease for our version of the “ball”! After all, that was when we drew doe permits!

At the lease, old tales are re-told about hunters who forgot to bring ammo or even one man who arrived without the bolt to his bolt-action rifle.

Accounts of legendary game crimes are replayed, too, like

the ones about two men who claimed to have shot huge bucks, which proved fraudulent.

The night before the opener is often a sleepless one. But the only sleep-depriving worries are about over-sleeping.

And daydreams in the dark of big bucks cause some twisting and turning, too – like a kid wondering what Santa will bring.

On my first night on my first deer lease, all of the above kept me awake along with the cacophony of snoring

Personally, I was wishing my buddy and I hadn’t spent the entire trip to Kerrville dipping chips into a kettle of “Wick Fowler’s 4-Alarm Chili!” Even without the chili, I still have trouble sleeping the night before.

The grandest feeling, though, is leaving town and troubles behind as you head to the hunt on a cool, sunlit afternoon as the trees begin to turn.

And all’s right in the world.

“Turbulence”

I was on a plane bound for Chicago, but the “friendly skies” were not so friendly that day. For most of the two-hour flight, we were tossed up and down and side to side. It was so rough that the attendants stayed strapped in as well. However, in spite of the rough ride, our pilot skillfully brought the plane down and to a gentle stop.

Deer season opens in most of Texas on Saturday, November 7. Check the TPW Outdoor Annual, though for the bag limit in the county in which you hunt. And be assured that like the buck pictured here, more deer will see YOU on opening day than you will see them. Photo by John Jefferson.

When on the ground, I thought of that old saying, “The Lord never promised us a calm passage, just a safe landing.” But while in the air, the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:20 kept coming to my mind, “…and lo, I am with you always!”

Now, onto my personal life. No, you were wrong in the first place, just let it go. I had apologized to the offended party and now I’m publicly apologizing for my wrong doings. And then I received word that he(the attorney) had run his mouth after a board meeting and brought my children and their issues into a conversation about the matter that started all of this spat in the first place. I simply can’t let it go as this is now working on me mentally and this may get ugly before all of this is resolved.

This is going to be a personal feelings column and some of you may want to just stop reading right here. I am struggling with a couple of business decisions about how to handle two very different situations and it’s not often that I am this indecisive about things, but these two problems are really bugging me and I’m going to have to spend some time sorting them out before I can or will share the details with my readers. The first problem has to do with some damaging information that I just happened to find laying on the ground(it must have accidentally fallen out of somebody’s pocket) and after consulting with a few trusted friends, I decided to hold off on printing the information in the newspaper. One of

the main reasons is that the information could have some damaging political implications and I don’t want to be accused of influencing an already heated political race, although I have already been accused of doing just that because I printed some signs and push cards for some of the candidates. Here’s a newsflash for you folks......we are in the printing business.....it’s what we do for a living....... we buy paper by the truckloads and ink by the barrel. Anyway, I will more than likely print the information after the election and let the chips fall where they may, but at least I can’t be accused of providing an October surprise, albeit on a very small local level.

The second matter has to do with a long standing relationship with an attorney that

world, I’m about as happy personally as I have been in a really long time. Finding someone to share good conversation, relaxed meals, and a little time on the dance floor does wonders for the soul and my attitude. That may be the only thing

that gets me through all of this other stuff that I’m dealing with on a business level and it sure is a lot more fun to take a trip around the dance floor than to worry about three newspapers. Till next time, I’m ............Wade in the Shade.
