Manhunt Suspect Now in Custody

On Wednesday, October 7 at 2:11pm, Walker County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to a shooting inthe 100 block of Carolyn Street in Riverside Harbor. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the victim who had a visible gunshot wound to the chest.

Deputies assisted with aid until EMS arrived and transported thevvictim to the Conroe Regional Medical center where he is recovering.

Several witnesses advised to have last seen the suspect fleeing armed with a rifle and was most likely trying tovleave the area. Deputies and re-

sponding officers held a perimeter around the area. At one point, the suspect posed a threat to the officers, which lead an officer to discharge his weapon not striking the suspect who thenvcontinued to flee the area. Tracking dogs and aircraft was called to assist in locating suspect who was later spotted by aircraft hiding in a wooded area. Shortly thereafter, 37-year-old Kyle Hand was taken into custodyvand evaluated by EMS, where he was cleared with no injuries and transported to the Walker County Jail.

Coach Rodney Southern said after the game “Sometimes you have to win ugly and this was an ugly win, but a win is a win and we’ll take it”. He was referring to a hard fought battle that

saw his offense sputter at times and in all actuality the defense carried the team for this game.

The offense really only had one good drive in which they scored a touchdown and then one additional touchdown after the de-

fense set them up with a really short field after a fumble recovery inside the 20 yard line. The other score came on a quarterback sack, strip, and scoop return for a touchdown by the Hornet defense.

The Hornets scored

twice in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead and then the second and third quarters were scoreless. The final score came in the fourth quarter as Kingwood was desperately trying to get something going in the passing game, but was backed up against

their own endzone and the sack strip touchdown put the Hornets up three scores and pretty much sealed the 21-0 victory for the Hornets. The Mustangs made one last push to try to avoid the shutout and were traveling down the field, but a late fourth quarter

interception gave Huntsville the ball and they simply went to the victory formation and ended the game. The Hornets will be home this Friday, October 16, 2020 at Bowers Stadium as they take on the Panthers of C.E. King at 7:00 pm.

Roark Samuel Rohe

Roark Samuel Rohe was born July 15, 1948 to Gordon Samuel and Beverly Salley Rohe and went to home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 10, 2020. He attended schools in Dallas, Houston, and the American School in Beirut, Lebanon.

He attended Tarleton State University for a year and then was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the 4th in-

After his service, he attended Sam Houston State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. He married Cindy Dorrell Rohe in 1971 and they established their home in Huntsville. They had two children, Roark “Seth” Rohe and Scott Samuel Rohe.

Roark was the manager of Phelps Water Supply for forty-one years. He was a member of Phelps Methodist Church where he held the position of treasurer for forty years. He served as president of the Walker County Farm Bu-

reau for several years and was active in the Walker County Fair Association in many different positions.

He loved to build and create new things.

He was particularly proud of the many permanent improvements he helped make to the fairgrounds. He also loved to build barns, entryways, and houses. His favorite saying was “I’ve got everything it takes to do the job.”

Roark loved to cook and feed people and try new recipes. For years he would help cook for crowds of people and banquets.

He and friends rebuilt an old fire truck and converted it to a barbeque pit on

wheels. They called themselves the Pine Valley Fire Brigade and could be found at cook-offs serving as many people as possible.

He seemed to always have a smile and his laugh could be heard a half mile away. He also loved a good argument. He liked jazz and very loud rock music. You never saw him without a book to read or to listen to on tape. He loved technology and had an affinity for remote controls and gadgets.

Roark was preceded in death by his parents, his son Seth, and his brother Bruce Rohe. He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Cindy Rohe, his son Scott Rohe and wife Christine and two precious grandchildren, Seth William Rohe and Kaci Nicole Rohe who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother Duke Rohe, his sister in law Karen Rohe and their children and grandchildren, and his aunt and uncle RW and Frances Pratt and several cousins.

Billy Fred Crabb

Billy Fred Crabb was born December 7, 1946 to Walter Presley Crabb and Lela Louise Hines Crabb.

Billy is survived by his wife of 51 years Peggy Rich-

ards Crabb, daughter Kristi Glasgow (Rory), daughter Kelly Brown (Lloyd), granddaughters Shelby Burns and Emily Burns, and grandson Bryan Glasgow. Billy is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Walter P. Crabb, Jr., Charles Ray Crabb, his daughter Karmyn Crabb, and his grandson Patrick Glasgow.

Billy grew up in the Crabb’s Prairie Community and graduated from Huntsville High School. He worked at the Exxon for Cooter Galloway, managed the local KFC, drove a Lilly milk truck, was the office manager for Gaylord Construction, and retired in 1999 from Texas Department of Criminal Justice having worked in food service at the Wynne Unit.

History was important to Billy, especially local history. He imparted his love of history through storytelling. He was an excellent storyteller and loved to tell stories of childhood to anyone that would listen. His daughters fondly remember his stories of his dog Jeff, the time Santa left a bike in the hallway and he tripped over it

and cussed it out, the time he shot the back out of his daddy’s car with a brand-new gun, spending time with his grandpa (Mr. Chris) and going to eat BBQ in the Hopewell community.

Billy never met a stranger and could travel halfway across the country and find someone he knew or at least find out they knew someone in common. He loved people and he loved talking to people. He spent a good part of his retirement on the benches at Walmart talking to anyone that would stop and listen.

He caught up with old friends there and made new ones. He also enjoyed making his rounds around town to the courthouse, G&O Barbershop, the police station, and Pete Johnson’s Towing Service.

He loved whittling and was never without a piece of wood and a sharp pocket knife.

He was an excellent shot. He tried to teach his daughters how to shoot. Kelly was a good shot, but Kristi

ending up shooting the tops out of the pine trees. Karmyn was too young the day he tried to teach them to shoot. He enjoyed fishing until his fishing buddies Orville Coburn and Homer Kendrick passed away.

He taught his girls to drive just by handing them the keys to an old car and telling them they could drive anywhere they wanted as long as they stayed in the pasture.

Kristi was 10, Kelly 8, and Karmyn 5.

He told them to not let Karmyn drive...

He took his family to church and slept through plenty of Joe Barnes, Lloyd Bates, and Cloyce Johnson’s sermons. He enjoyed listening to bluegrass music and occasionally pickin’ the banjo and mandolin. He liked to watch MASH, Barney Miller, Andy Griffith, Gunsmoke, and John Wayne movies. He also liked to get a good price on meat at the grocery store and he made the best BBQ brisket and greasy hamburgers.

He made friends easily. He believed in finding the good in people. He loved his family and especially his grandchildren. He never called anyone by their given name, only by the nickname he gave them--tooter, mcdonald, boss, beano, buckaroo, rooster, and opie taylor, to name a few of his favorites.

We will miss him telling us that memaw put him in the corner, to hold on just a minute he had one more story to tell, be careful on your way home, and asking us if we knew how to get to Louisiana, or if memaw could see out the side of her window.

Visitation will be Friday, October 16th 12:00 at Sam Houston Funeral Home. Memorial Service to follow at 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to Shriner’s Hospital, St. Jude, or Texas Children’s Ronald McDonald House.

Covid-19 Update by Darren Grant

Locally and across the state, new cases of Covid were down, though they continue to rise nationally. Huntsville held Fair on the Square about ten days ago, and the case numbers from that should start to roll in this week.

Cases were down at SHSU as well. At this point the incidence of cases among students is lower than it is in the population generally across Texas. Most Bearkats are being pretty good about social distancing and mask wearing and I guess it is paying off.

With no new developments locally, let’s take this week to look around the world and see how

everyone is doing. There are about 200 countries in the world, and the U.S. is 10th and 11th in deaths and reported cases per capita, that is, scaled by population. Ahead of us are mostly small countries like Kuwait, Aruba, and Qatar.

Also ranking high are a bunch of South American countries, like Peru, Argentina, and Brazil.

Many of these were late to the party, but once the disease got going, it took off. A number of European countries are pretty high on the list, too, such as Spain, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

So who is doing well?

It’s a real mix. Some European countries, such as Germany and Poland, some Asian countries, such as South Korea and Thailand, and a lot of African countries. Africa has been a real success story about this disease.

Many of those countries already have experience dealing with infectious disease, such as Ebola, and they have been pretty no-nonsense about this one. That is true for most of the countries that are doing well. It has really paid off.

How big is the difference between good and bad?

It’s really big. The worst countries have had one death for every thousand people. The U.S. isn’t there yet, but it’s getting close, just like we are here in Walker County, where we have 57 deaths out of 70,000 people.

Meanwhile, in the countries doing better, there may be only one tenth as many cases and deaths.

It just means it’s within our power to do better or worse. We can’t get rid of this darn thing by ourselves, but we can keep it at bay. If we do that, it will show up in the numbers. Just like Fair on the Square will, this week, sure as shootin’.

Sunday Observations by Christy

Well..... that was a fun week.... said no one ever.

So last week we have this storm in the gulf, it’s headed to New Orleans, we got a front, a trough, we good..... until we weren’t. Hurricanes are tricky.

As we all know, they truly have a mind of their own.

We’ve seen it. 6 weeks ago. We fall under mandatory evacuation orders and it’s party over in SETX. Laura was barreling down, and

we were going to take a direct hit. But at the last minute.... it wobbled. Lake Charles was hammered, we were shocked, that a 20 mile wobble saved us.

And no one complained. In fact we were happy.

Saddened for our Louisiana neighbors, we donated, went and helped, and cried for their loss. But I don’t remember one person being mad, that we got dodged.

Fast forward to this

week. Every single source showed this in alignment going in at East Cameron Parish. Lake Charles area again. And that is exactly where it went. They said anywhere from a 1-3.... came in as a two. Once again, spot on.

What wasn’t counted on, was a mess on the west side. See, we all know that’s the clean side. East side is nasty. We are going to be good.

But it formed storms and some super fun winds.... say upwards of 70 mph and more, ON THE WEST SIDE. Wait no.... that’s the clean side.... right??

Wrong.

What we got was serious wind, and rain. Let’s get serious guys.... I had 6.07 inches at my house in 24 hours. So not a one of us can fuss about the rain.

heart felt apologies I’ve ever read, on social media. From our meteorologists.

They publicly apologized and felt awful for the missed call. But guys.... seriously?

These people work tirelessly during our storms to predict, calm, and advise the public. Weather is wonky. I come from a family of pilots. They

will say the same.

All the imagery, models, guides, and experts..... will ever predict God. And sometimes, God throws a curve ball.

Happy Sunday peeps..... thank your lucky stars for what we have, appreciate humble people on a public stage, making public apologies. I promise, very few folks would do

that with their own profession.

Hell, most of you can’t even apologize for a deliberate hurt inflicted on others....much less a professional error, made honestly, that each and every one of us have done at own jobs. Hold yourself to the standards you hold others, and don’t judge. God don’t like ugly.

Instead, it could lead to exactly the opposite, and might even make married life a little bit better for both partners. It’s about the unspoken benefits of men going with other men to hunting camp, and the occasional reluctance of their wives to bless the event. The only leaving home will be temporary and possibly to mutual satisfactions. Read on.

In addition to shooting a deer, it’s also often beginning of a learning curve

for some men. More goes on than just hunting, and some of the erroneously imagined happenings may be what causes some wives to resent their mates venturing afield. But there is little of that, if any.

It’s really all about hunting and camp life.

I was invited to join a group of wildlife biologists on a hunt near the border years ago.

Cartel bloodshed has curtailed much of the tourist trade in Mexico, today, but border towns flourished in those days. We were staying on a ranch only 15 miles from the river, across which awaited unspeakable activities. In deer

camp, there was lively and spirited man-talk during every moment around the campfire, skinning pole, and kitchen table, but it all involved hilarious accounts of comical hunting trips past, legendary bucks bagged (like the Brady Buck and the Dilly Monster), and other hunting related sagas. Not one word was ever uttered about the illicit pleasures just minutes away to the south. We were there to hunt, and the newbies in the bunch may not have anticipated the value of campfire camaraderie.

It’s rich. And deep.

later were proven fake.

Valuable hunting talk is also shared – tips on bullet weights, calibers, firearms care, and techniques. I wasn’t much help in the kitchen, back then, so I washed dishes to do my part. I later graduated to doing some of the cooking.

I also learned to keep my gear off the floor.

And discovered that mops and brooms fit my hands – skills that some husbands still lack.

“Moo!”

I was outside the house calling our power company. I was about to answer a question the automated service had asked me, when one of my cows let out a loud “moo!”

The automated service then said, “I’m sorry, but I did not understand your response.”

I am thankful the Lord understands my responses. “The Spirit helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know how we ought to pray; the Spirit himself pleads with God for us in groans that words cannot express.” (Romans 8:26) Part of the intrigue of hunting is the camp life and opportunity to get away from the day-to-day struggles in life to a place where matching wits and skills with wildlife is all that matters. It’s an escape for the hunters and respite for spouses at home with time for themselves.

na and these guys are all that we have left to choose from and that’s a shame. I think that if I was nominated for something like that I would have to say......

No thank you. I pretty much know all of the bad things that I have forward 30 years and done in my life and I I don’t think that the don’t need other folks two sides could agree pointing them out and on lunch. It’s all about adding to them on nawho has the numbers and the votes, regardless of the item being voted on. The Democrats were lecturing the Republicans and the Republicans were lecturing the Democrats and I don’t think that either side had a clue as to just exactly what they were supposed to be doing in the committee hearing on this confirmation of a new Justice, it was all about posturing for the next big event which is the November 3, 2020 election. And, it’s just getting started, we have several more days of this stuff and I don’t think that I’ve heard one kind word from either side. Just quit all of the positioning and lecturing and take a vote.....all of that talking is not going to change one single thing and I think that they just like hearing themselves talk. I think that we have gotten to the point that a decent person doesn’t want anything to do with the political are-

Man, am I in trouble.

It’s Monday evening about midnight and I’m just now sitting down to write this week’s column. My editor’s are screaming at me and I’ve really got to get this done.

I sometimes wonder where my time goes, but I did cover a football game Thursday evening and then made a round trip from Huntsville to Houston to Winnie and back to Huntsville.......in the middle of a hurricane on Friday to deliver some political signs.

Neither rain, nor sleet, or snow......or Hurricane Delta can stop me from delivering customer service..... although I was kinda questioning myself as I sat in my truck that was rocking side to side in the wind and I was dripping wet from being out in the storm, but hey, I made it and I will dry out and it will all be okay. And, I may need to admit that I played a little this past weekend, but ....... where does my time go??????

Now, speaking of politics......I know,

I know, I said that I wasn’t going to talk about politics in this column and I think that I have referenced them three times in the last four columns, but I had a chance to watch a little of the Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings this morning. It is simply amazing to me how much our Country and the polarization of people has deteriorated in the last 30 or so years. And, I’m talking about both sides of the aisle, those guys and gals are dug in to their positions and I don’t think an atomic bomb could budge either side. A comment was made that 30 years ago the vote was 96-0 for one Court Justice and then a few years later it was 97-0 for another confirmation. These two Justices were appointments from different Presidents from opposing political parties, but both sides were able to see the good in the person nominated and that they were qualified and both sides at different times voted to confirm the nominee. On a lighter note, I get the privilege of covering two pretty good High School Football Teams and thanks to the Covid situation, my Huntsville Hornets season was delayed a few weeks which means that my season will continue way up into the Winter. I hope that I am still covering

High School Football in January and I get to see both East Chambers and Huntsville make deep runs into the playoffs and a couple of State Championships would be great as well. See, there is a bright spot in America.......it’s just not in Washington, DC. Till next time, I’m..........
