During a career that has spanned more than five decades, Tallman has announced more than 15,000 rodeo performances in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

“When you think of legends in professional rodeo, Bob Tallman has to come to mind,” Sturman said. “He is one of the best rodeo announcers of all time. He is a wealth of information and sto-

ries. He has seen it all in our sport and has worked tirelessly to inform the fans, give back to our industry and help to make the sport better than when he started. He was an obvious choice for the 2020 Legend of ProRodeo.”

Born Oct. 25, 1947, in Winnemucca, Nev., Tallman tried his hand as a rodeo competitor, but he quickly discovered his forte was behind a microphone,

as evidenced by his first PRCA Announcer of the Year Award in 1982.

Tallman’s career began in Fallon, Nev., when he told a rodeo producer he thought he could do a better job than the announcer was doing. The producer told him to give it a try. Tallman earned $100 for that first job and has never looked back.

Dorothy held her family together when tragedy struck with the loss of her son, Robert. She was a fierce defender of those she loved and loved to be needed by family, especially her grandchildren.

She was a Charter member of Elkins Lake Baptist Church and volunteered her time in many capacities there.

She always reminded her family to remember the teachings of Christ.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Audrey Oatis, her husband Charlie and her son Robert K. Whitecotton.

Orlando Cosmo Ortiz Sr.

Orlando Cosmo Ortiz, Sr. was born the oldest son to the union of Huldarico Ortiz and Maria Ayala Ortiz, on February 6, 1956 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Orlando relocated to New York City as a young child and re-

Orlando was educated in the New York City school system after which he served his country, attended college, and traveled the world. Orlando was honorably discharged from the C Battery 1st Division 82nd Field Artillery Unit, Fort Hood, TX 1992.

Prior to joining the United States Army, Orlando met love of his life, Madeline Gunn Ortiz while both worked as Paralegal Assistants within the Bronx Supreme Court. Orlando and Madeline were married for over 40 years. From the union three children were born, Leona, Orlando, and Nicholis.

After separating from the military, Orlando was employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and a Correctional Officer, promoted to an Auditor, and served the state honorably until his retirement. Orlando loved his family, fishing, reading history materials, various music genres, and playing his electric guitar.

Orlando departed this life during the afternoon of September 29, 2020.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife Madeline; his children: Leona (Devin) Burns of Charlotte, NC, Orlando C. Ortiz Jr.,

Mom was born in LaSalle Parish and her family moved to Orange, Tx in 1941. She attended Little Cypress High School, graduating in 1958. She met and married her husband of 52 years in Orange where they raised their family, living in several places with Dad’s work at OI and Champion Paper until settling in Huntsville, TX in 1988.

The quintessential Southern Mother, she lived her life behaving like a lady, managing a household with four children, making the

best gumbo and fried shrimp, baking delicious chocolate cakes, sewing beautiful quilts for all of her progeny, and being the model for each of us. WWJLD is an expression we use when problem solving, “What Would Janie Lou Do?” Janie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Huntsville and spent several years as a secretary and volunteer in the church office. She enjoyed traveling with her family and leaves us all with wonderful memories of the great times we had and fabulous places we visited around the world. Also, an active member of the Tall Pines Quilt Guild, Mom participated in many quilt festivals to benefit the community. Her sewing room was one

of her favorite spots and the family would spend hours with her there as one of our happy places. Through Mom’s matriarchal line, she is a direct descendant of Edward Doty, a signer of the Mayflower Compact in 1620 and is a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Christine Lee and the wonderful caregivers, including Jennifer, Ruth, Effia, Taryn, Krystal, Lisa, and Joanna who have been so loving and supportive at Texas Oncology in The Woodlands.

During the later stages of Mom’s illness, Daun Okabayashi was a wonderful nurse in our home and Mom valued her knowledge and friendship.

Obituaries

Herman Bush Brown Herman Bush Brown was born July 9, 1934, in Huntsville, Texas, to Isaiah Daniel Brown and Bessie Ellington Brown, and went home to the Lord on October 1, 2020, in Conroe, Texas. He is survived by his wife of almost 67 years, Doris Sanders Brown; his children, Marilyn Brown Batterton (Terry) and Larry Brown (Carol); grandchildren Traci Brown Walker (John) and Daniel Cody Brown and fiance Kaci Call; and great-grandchildren, Madelyn Nicole Walker, Rosemarri Belle Walker, Greysen Marie Caye Walker, John Cutter Brown and Jacie Faith Brown. He is also survived by his sister Joyce Shiflet, brother in law and sister in law Lee Roy and Dolores Sanders, niece Terri Altman, niece Leigh Anna Tracy and Family and niece Ramona Rogers de la Pena and Family.

Herman was a member of University Heights Baptist Church for 62 years. He and Doris worked in the nursery together for about 20 years and have many

fond memories of the children they watched grow up.

He was also a lifetime member of the Walker County Fair Association and served as an Executive Director. He was a member of the Scramble Heifer Committee for 17 years and worked alongside Doris in Admissions for 12 years.

Herman was a Volunteer Fireman with the Huntsville Fire Department for about 10 years in the late 1950’s to late 1960’s. He also served as police officer with Sam Houston State Teachers College from 1958-1968. After that he worked for Huntsville ISD in the Transportation Department and became the Director of Transportation for about 3 years. He ended his 28- year career at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a Heavy Equipment Supervisor in 1995.

After retirement from TDCJ Herman worked for Steely Lumber and Team Dodge before fully retiring in 2009.

After that he focused on his family and especially his beloved great-grandchildren.

His favorite activity was picking up the children from school every day until the spring of 2019 when his health began to fail.

The family is grateful to Janice Waldrup under the direction of

Pat Oliphant and also to Della Lopez and her staff at Assisted Living of Montgomery County for the tender and loving care they provided to Herman in his final days.

Alicia Gail (Ready) Layton It is with great sadness to share the news that on October 3rd 2020 Alicia Gail Layton (Ready) passed away.

Alicia was born November 25, 1952 in Houston Texas.

Alicia battled Leukemia since 2017. She put a strong and brave fight until the end. Alicia was sweet and kind who loved her children and grandchildren above all else. She was her husband, Rusty’s life and they were each other’s best friend. Alicia will surely be missed by everyone.

Folk Family Revival provided the music for the kick off concert on the Friday night before Fair on the Square.

mild days with temperatures in the low 80’s had the streets of downtown Huntsville filled with vendors and buyers alike last Saturday. The Fair saw new safeguards put in place to provide precautions for the Covid-19 pandemic and those safeguards included face cover-

ings, social distancing while waiting in line for food or at the various game vendors, and hand sanitizer stations were scattered throughout the entire venue.

The event featured a battle of the bands, a kid’s corner, the ever popular “Wine Knot” event, a beer tent, and the classic

car show. Admission to the event was free with paid parking available close to the venue and free parking at Bowers Stadium that included a free shuttle bus.

The lack of an opponent the previous week did not seem to have any shortcomings as the Hornets came out firing on all cylinders against the Wildcats as they opened up a 20-6 lead after the first quarter and then built that lead to 41-6 at the halftime break. The second half saw lots of substitutions for the hornets and they were not able to put any points on the board in the third quarter, but the defense held fast as they only allowed a single field goal for the Wildcats and the Hornets maintained a 41-9 lead going into the final frame.

The final quarter saw the Wildcats score a touchdown and then converted a two point play, but the Hor-

nets answered with a touchdown and extra point in the waning minutes of the game to arrive at a final score of 48-17.

The Hornets had a total of 59 offensive plays with 18 first downs and had 164 yards of rushing and 126 passing yards, but amassed a total of 551 all purpose yards as they had 158 yards returning kickoffs, 93 yards returning punts, and an additional 10 yards on an interception return. Quarterback A J Wilson(#8) was 7 for 16 in the passing department for 126 yards total with 2 touchdowns and he carried the ball 11 times for an additional 28 yards and a score. Jaylon McClain(#9) did the heavy work in the

running department as he had 76 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown, while Calvin Simmons(#10) had 17 yards on 3 carries and the other rushing touchdown. Jordan Woodberry(#4) had a 105 yard kickoff return for a touchdown and even the defense got in on the touchdown action as Ethan Minor(#7) returned a fumble for a score.

The defense had 69 tackles on the evening with 14 of those for a loss of yardage.

The Hornets will travel to Humble to take on Kingwood High School this Friday, October 9, 2020 in a game that has had a change in start time from a 7:30 pm. start to a 7:00 pm. start. Go Hornets!!!!

Covid-19 Update by Darren Grant

So the president has coronavirus. That’s too bad.

I am surprised and not surprised by this news.

Not surprised because apparently they weren’t very careful about it.

Surprised because the president is a “germaphobe” by his own admission. He has always been someone who washes his hands a lot, gets on people who cough around him, etc. I can’t figure out why that didn’t extend to coronavirus, which can be a lot worse than your regular cold.

Some people I’ve known who have had serious cases have said they’d never wish it on anyone.

It was a light week

around Walker County, with barely over 100 cases reported. Good news.

Across the state and nationally, the number of new cases each day is still rising.

It’s funny. There are maps that show where the virus is most active in the U.S., and if you follow them regularly, you’ll see the hot spots move across the country. There was one week that Mississippi was the worst, and then another week it was the Florida Panhandle, and then last week it was North Dakota of all places. This week it’s Wisconsin. So it all kind of evens out over time.

But it doesn’t equal out

perfectly.

Right now, over 5% of our county, including prisoners, has tested positive for Covid.

Only a handful of places in the country are worse than that. We’re not in the top ten counties nationwide—but we’re knocking on the doorstep. Montgomery has less than half as many cases, adjusting for population. By that standard, Harris County is doing better than we are, too.

Partly it’s because we haven’t been too careful, and partly it’s our prisons and the university. Both of these can be disease hot spots, and that’s proven to be true for us. Few other counties in the U.S. have so many hot spots together—a big university and seven prisons.

Which county is doing best in our area? Trinity, right next door. I’m not surprised. Months back, I watched a long video in which their mayor and police chief asked everybody to be careful about the virus. Lots of people saw it. It was the right thing to do and the right time to do it. I think it just put people in the right mindset up there and that has carried through to the present. I sure which we had done the same thing around here.

I think the most disturbing thing for me right now, is seeing how many people are losing family, friends, and more..... over political beliefs.

If it wasn’t so sad, it would be almost comical. Because our society is condemning one another based on the information given being presumed correct. On both sides.

You read that right....

PRESUMED. Here is the thing, every single politician makes promises.

All of them. No

new taxes, reversing policies, changing the world.... and more.

But yet, we argue over allegations. Did they pay taxes? How much? We see the “facts” supposedly.

We judge based on those “facts”, and it rolls down hill.

Bottom line, we see what all of them want us to see. On both sides.

For every single “fact” reported, I promise you the opposing side has “explained” the “facts”.... because not all was known....

about the “facts”.

That’s the scary part.

This isn’t a new issue.

The world has been hidden from the truth of political figures for decades. It goes back to how much does the media have the right to know, and therefore report.

But now, we are severing ties, with those we love, over the facts that could be rebuked before the printing press stops.

Why? Someone is not evil if they choose to support the opposing candidate. They are no more evil, than you are if you judge.

They are not baby killers if they vote differently than you.

They are not radical supremacists if they vote differently than you. Stop the hate people.

What every person is, is trying to make the best choice for their particular thoughts, based on half truths, shared by the masses, and spun by the insanity of social media. We are living in a world where people are basing their political beliefs based on memes, and what Bubbas next door neighbors cousin

By John Jefferson A MAN TOOK TIME A recent survey showed that kids without mentors seldom grow up hunting or fishing.

Makes sense. Like any other activity -kids need someone to show ‘em how it’s done. Alexander Pope described it centuries ago: “As the twig is bent the tree’s inclined.”

When I was seven, my father died in a military hospital in Tunisia during the WW II. My sister was three. The only man in the house was my Uncle Pete.

He introduced me to baseball, the New York Yankees, and Joe DiMaggio. He kindled a lifelong love of the sport, and good music. We shared a room for a while. But he moved out to get married shortly afterwards.

From that, one can draw the conclusion that childhood experiences last past adolescence.

Despite keeping my grandfather’s .30-30 Winchester Trappers Model rifle leaning by the door into the garage, he didn’t hunt. Fortunately for me, a hunting/ fishing buddy of my grandfather’s asked my mother if I’d like to go up to his primitive camp on Beech Creek, west of Silsbee, at the edge of the Big Thicket. Thankfully, she said, “YES!” I was nine, and my life changed that weekend.

Our jaunts up to his backwoods ”camp” deep in The Thicket created precious memories. I still “go there” on sleepless nights – watching the bottle cork he attached to the line

on my bamboo fishing pole for a bobber bounce while an unseen fish attacked my bait.

“Uncle Josh”, as I called him, taught me how to set a line for catfish at night, how to call hogs, how to “knock a can of black-eyed peas in the head” for supper, that when the wash bucket was empty, it was my chore to trudge down to the creek to fill it (and trudge back uphill). He also introduced me to bathing naked in that creek (although I worried about turtles). He warned me, too, about the mysterious “wampus cats” that stalked the woods at night. I laid in bed in the dark listening to the sounds of the forest, wondering if the cats were what made the night sounds. And

sometimes shivered.

He taught me how to perch-fish, shoot a .22 rifle and a 16-gauge shotgun, hunt squirrels, about tick bites and showed me how he cooked cabrito in his big brick pit. He didn’t have to teach me fascination for his Winchester .3220 rifle; that came naturally. But I

never got to shoot it.

He was a gentleman and a gentle mentor.

I can still see him in his khaki pants and undershirt, leaning over the pit, wearing his trademark fedora. I loved him.

And appreciate all he did for me.

Many kids don’t have an “Uncle Josh” to show them the woods.

We met Jim and Colleen from Illinois while on vacation in South Dakota. As we were about to part ways, I had a short prayer with the four of us. Later Dana and I were having lunch when I heard a familiar voice behind me. It was Jim! His motorcycle had broken down. He came inside looking for help and saw us. He was able to get it running then said to me, “I don’t need a little prayer for the moment. I need and all day Jesus prayer!”

“Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” (Luke 18:1) Kids need someone to introduce them to the outdoor world and all that it encompasses. Many lack a father to do that. Maybe you can help. Photo by Brad Brown.

We can kinda talk about politics again this week. President Trump and I have something in common. We both have had Covid-19. A while back, I put a good friend and his wife in an ambulance and as I closed the door on the ambulance, the thought crossed my mind that I may never see them again. Once they were inside a hospital, it would be almost impossible to get a chance to see them due to the fact that the hospitals are all locked down and not allowing visitors.

I was wearing a mask and I completely sanitized after I left the property, but I had their keys in my hand and I was locking and unlocking doors, I went to retrieve her purse for her to bring with her to the hospital for insurance cards, etc, and I handled their bag that contained cell phone chargers and other needed items. In other words, I was all

around the opportunity to catch the little virus.

About a week later, I started getting symptoms of the Covid variety. I never had the traditional symptoms like high fever and a wicked cough, but I did have a low grade fever(around 100 degrees) and I was exhausted. I spent five days pretty much in bed and it was a chore to go from the bedroom to the bathroom.

I finally decided to try to find enough energy to take a shower after three days and I wasn’t sure that I was going to be able to spend enough time standing in the shower to rinse the soap off of me, but I made it and was able to stumble back to bed.

I never really struggled to breath, but I just didn’t have any energy and I felt like I had been run over by a Mack Truck. I was taking a regimen of medicine as prescribed by my doctor and for a little while

I wasn’t sure if the medicine was working, or if it was side effects from the medication and after visiting with him, I decided to skip a day......

Yep, it was working and I got right back onto the medicine and after about 5 or 6 days, my condition started to improve.

As I’m writing this column, I’ve been about a week of no Covid symptoms and I feel like I have won the battle, but I know that I’m not at 100% and after talking to other folks who have had the virus, they tell me that it takes months to fully recover. So, if you see me stopping to catch my breath after walking for a good distance, just know that I’ll be alright, I just need a little extra time and oxygen to get to where I’m going. That little virus is a wicked little bug and can inflict some serious damage.

I would do the exact same thing again for a friend, but next

time I might just pour a gallon of sanitizer over my head when I’m done instead of just rubbing a little around on my hands, arms and face. My friends are home and recovering, I’m going to be fine, and everything worked out this time. That has not always been the case as

we all know friends, family, and others who have succumbed to this virus. I’m firmly convinced that we are all going to catch this bug before it’s over with, but maybe we will have a vaccine before too long and that will help. So, remember to wash your hands, sanitize,

wear a mask, and social distance......all of those things are not foolproof, but everything helps and whatever you can do to stay away from this little critter is worth it because I wouldn’t wish this on anybody. Till next time, I’m.......Wade in the Shade.
