By Wade Thibodeaux The Huntsville Hornets Football teams held their annual media day and “Towel Scrimmage” last Saturday, September 12, 2020 beginning at 8:00 am. with team and individual pictures. After the picture taking was completed, the Varsity squad scrimmaged the Junior Varsity team and then the Freshman

team held their scrimmage by going offense versus defense. After everything was over, everyone enjoyed ice cold watermelon provided by Northside Baptist Church. The varsity boys travel to Lufkin this Friday, September 18, 2020 to take on the Panthers in a scrimmage slated for 6:30 pm. at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin.

The Hornets will have

their home opener against Nederland on Friday, September 25, 2020 in Bowers Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 pm. Moore For Your Money by Ken Moore In our part of the world, the winds will blow and the waves will crash. How do we persevere? It’s easy to look around and see that many of us have survived so many disruptions. The words “resilience” and “resiliency” have been used frequently since the events of September 11, 2001.

Children, families, communities, and the nation have all been described as resilient or having the ability to keep going—and with a positive outlook despite enduring highly stressful events. In everyday language, resiliency is being able to “roll with the punches” and carry on despite life’s setbacks.

Financial resilience is the ability to withstand life events that impact one’s income and assets.

Some financially stressful events, such as unemployment, divorce, disability, and health problems and, yes, even pandemics affect people individually.

Others, such as recessions, stock market downturns, and acts of terrorism, affect all of society.

Good peace of mind and financial resiliency is always buoyed with financial resources, such as savings, health insurance, and a goodpaying job. Another resource for financial resiliency is your own human capital, which economists define as the knowledge, skills, experiences, and other personal qualities that people present to potential employers.

While the future often feels very uncertain, there are some principles that can guide our decisions in this fast-changing world, keeping us responsive in the decades to come.

Cornerstones of Resilience 1.

Maintain a low debt-to-income ratio.

Monthly consumer debt payments (credit card bills, car loan payments) should be 15% or less of monthly take-home pay. For example: $275 of debt payments divided by $2,500 of net pay equals a consumer debt-to-income ratio of 11% (275 divided by 2,500).

2. Maintain an emergency fund of at least three month’s expenses. Keep this

money liquid with immediate access such as bank savings and money market accounts, money market mutual funds, or short-term CDs. 3. Consider your education or job training to be ongoing, never finished.

Continue to develop new marketable skills to increase your worth in today’s competitive labor market.

4. P u r c h a s e adequate life insurance to protect dependents against the loss of a breadwinner’s income and disability insurance to provide continued income following an accident or illness.

5. I n c r e a s e your knowledge of financial topics so that you make smart financial decisions.

In the world of competitive sports, practice is important for three reasons.

First, it prepares you for competition.

Second, it creates muscle memory and habits. And third, it predicts future performance. In other words, you perform how you practice.

This same thinking should be applied to

your finances.

How does one practice for a financially stressful event, you ask? The first thing is always, always, always live by a budget.

Budgeting gives you the power to see and decide where your money goes.

You should make it a habit to establish a system of budgeting and tracking every dollar you receive and spend. It establishes a habit of being financially proactive which is pivotal in a crisis.

The most important thing to do before and during a financial problem is to be proactive. It sounds like basic advice but being assertive and mustering up the strength to act is difficult during a crisis. Acknowledge and accept that the crisis is real and begin damage control to help you cope.

Being proactive early in the process allows you to chart a course of action. You can contact creditors and arrange to pay late or make partial payments and find out what other options are available. Begin the proactive process by revising your budget to reflect the loss of income or new expenses and stop any unnecessary spending immediately.

After you’ve prepared your financial ship for battle, start looking for solutions specific to your situation. Make sure you understand your insurance policies, file for unemployment or disability benefits and research options.

It is always a good idea, especially when dealing with tax and/ or legal issues, to consult a professional.

Arm yourself with as much information as possible before you

act and be sure you weigh the benefits of each decision.

Remember the key here is to survive the storm and live to fight another day.

When the inevitable disruptions do hit us, being financially resilient will provide the best possible shock absorbers and help minimize becoming overwhelmed and distracted.

Dennis Gerald Wood On Monday, September 7th, 2020, Dennis G. Wood, loving husband, devoted father of two children, and proud grandpa of three granddaughters, passed away at the age of 78.

Dennis was born on December 9th, 1941, in Fort Benning, Georgia to Georgia Ruth Williamson Wood. He graduated from Ralph L. Fike High School in Wilson, North Carolina in 1960 and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1975.

On August 13th, 1966 Dennis married JoAnn Powell, they would have celebrated 55 years of marriage. They have a daughter, Theresa; a son, Kenton; and three granddaughters, Hannah, Sophie, and Zoe. Aside from his family, Dennis’ greatest devotion was to this country.

He was an Air Force Medic and flew many top clearance Air Rescue missions around the Globe. Through the military, he earned his Physician Assistant licenses and proudly served in the Air Force for 36 years, retiring as

a Captain in 1987.

Dennis then continued serving his country, working as a Physician Assistant in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for 26 years. Dennis officially entered retirement in 2014.

Dennis was known for his love of medicine, generosity, Starbucks tea, his hats and was a proud grandpa.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; daughter Theresa and her spouse Matthew Stephenson; son Kenton; three granddaughters, Hannah, Sophie and Zoe Stephenson; sister Lynda Johnson; brother-in-law Craig Powell and many nieces and nephews.

Connie Sue Sandel Connie Sue was born July 16, 1943 in Nacogdoches, Texas to Carl Raymond and Constance Bernice Weber.

Connie passed away on September 7, 2020.

She is survived by her Husband- John Sandel, Son - Clint Sandel, Grandson Aiden Sandel, Granddaughter –Jordan Sandel, and Great Grandson-Emmett Sandel. Brothers-Glenn

Connie was known for her great love of family, animals, and especially our Lord Jesus Christ.

She always found humor and shared her good nature with a laugh and a smile, and no matter what came her way.

Connie was a longtime member, and Sunday School Teacher at Calvary Baptist Church in Huntsville, TX. Above all else, she enjoyed time with loved ones and her many animals.

Her pet dogs Eddie, Ider, and Pepper were by her side to the end.

She will be greatly missed by family, loved ones, and life-long friends.

McPherson passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones on September 10, 2020, in Huntsville, Texas.

He was born June 16, 1938, in Ventura, California. He was the son of Donald and Ruth McPherson.

Mac grew up in Palmdale, California. At 17 years old he joined the U.S. Army and began a life of travel and adventure. He served in the Korean war and did two tours of duty in the Vietnam war, where he met the love of his life Thi Chi “Angel” McPherson. His years in the service took him to several countries in Europe, as well as many military installations across the U.S. He was a proud alumni of the 1st Calvary Division Association. After 20 years of service, he retired from the U.S. Army. He then began a career as a correctional officer with TDCJ and retired again after 25 years.

In full-time retirement, Mac could devote all his time to his family and his hobbies. Restoring classic cars was a lifelong passion for Mac. He had a large collection of cars and would spend his days fixing one and tearing down another. What made Mac the happiest was spending time with his family. hood of a car with one of his daughters or grandchildren in tow. Mac was known for his witty sense of humor and his racy jokes. Making someone laugh, whether a lifelong friend or a random stranger, gave Mac joy. Even in sickness, Mac always tried to comfort others with his humorous charm.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Herbert McPherson. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Angel McPherson; four daughters, Lucy DeLoney of Las Vegas, NV; Dyanna Melloh and husband Eric, of Middleton, RI; Audrey McPherson of Dallas TX; Crystol Shirley and husband Jason, of College Station, TX; 7 grandchildren, Britnee Strickland, Collin and Cash Melloh, Jalen and Heaven DeLoney; and Crislyn and Ashlyn Shirley; and one brother, David McPherson.

Deborah Rene Jackson Deborah (Debbie) Rene’ Jackson, age 67, passed away unexpectedly at home, on Saturday September 12, 2020. She was born on

September 12, 1953 in San Antonio, Texas at Lackland Air Force Base to Herbert and Ruby Nelson Wright.

She was a 1971 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School in Alexandria, Virginia where she married her true love; Jackie (Jack) Jackson on September 12, 1971 and he has survived.

Also surviving are her two sons, Jackie Michael (Mike) Jackson of Huntsville, TX and Mark Edward Jackson of Spring, Texas; her two brothers, Randy Wright of Frisco, TX and Ritchie Wright of Fischer, TX; six beautiful grandchildren; Claire Jackson,

Austin Jackson, Carson Thrash, Kaylynn Thrash, Payton Hull, and Jaden Hull; as well as many other family members and friends that loved her so much.

Her father, mother and brother, Jackie Wright; preceded her in death.

Debbie grew up as a military child moving frequently around the country to include England. As she married and settled down, she found roots in Conroe, Texas where she had a long career of more than 20 years at Weaver Industries as a Plant Manager and after her boys graduated high school; she moved to Huntsville Texas where

she began her career at Texas Department of Criminal Justice working for more than 20 years until she retied in September 2016.

Debbie always made lasting relationships with everyone she encountered and loved her family and friends tremendously.

Debbie loved cooking, spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren, shopping and volunteering in her community.

Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with as well as those she reached but never met.

Covid-19 Update by Darren Grant

I work at Sam Houston State University and since classes were moved online after Spring Break I’ve had the place to myself. They worked on the student center for a year and finally took it down and it looked beautiful.

But there was no one around to see it.

There was no one around to see anything. I would walk through dark, quiet empty halls in my building, no matter what time of the day.

It was the same during summer. In May the university started making plans to open in the fall, and I thought, cases are going to spike this summer and then all those

plans will be useless.

And cases did spike.

What surprised me is that they decided to go ahead and open up the school anyway. And then, in July and August, it was chaos.

They changed their minds on this and that and threw everything into a frenzy.

And so now I go into the office and…it’s a lot like it was in the spring. Still not many people, small numbers in class, most faculty working from home. Pretty much everyone has made materials available online—you sure don’t want a kid coming to class sick—and students take advantage of that. It’s not unusual to have 30% attendance

in a class, with the others mostly watching the video from home.

Even so, cases at the university are growing at a pretty good clip. The students still live together, eat together, and socialize, and that’s where most transmission happens.

In some universities, they do “sentinel testing” of a random set of kids every day, in order to get a good handle on the disease.

But they aren’t doing that here. They aren’t even testing for free—a test is $70—and the university health center’s budget this year is no bigger than last year, adjusted for inflation. It’s not serious enough on the health angle, and the only reason the effects haven’t been worse all around is that so few students are on campus. In a perverse way, it is kind of working out.

Locally, there were relatively few cases in Walker County this past week— well under 20 per day, which is kind of the cutoff between “bad” and “not as bad.” However, we have gone past fifty deaths total, including the prisoners. The “third wave” of cases that I’m expecting from school and college openings hasn’t happened—yet.

Globe Life Field officials have emphasized that recommended health and safety standards are being met. Safety measures will include a mask requirement at all times while inside Globe Life Field. There will be additional hand-washing and sanitizing stations throughout the building.

Seats will be sold in groups of four with separation between groups.

Contactlimiting measures, such as mobile tickets, have been implemented.

There will also be metal-detector screenings and a nobag policy at entries on performance nights.

Nearby Fort Worth will also play host to the annual PRCA Convention, Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, in addition to Cowboy Christmas and other fan-favorite events.

The NFR was born in Texas, and the first three years of the event were held at the Dallas State Fairgrounds beginning in 1959.

Years later, the event moved to Las Vegas and has been staged at the Thomas & Mack Center at UNLV since 1985.

That venue is not available for live entertainment with fans this year due to coronavirus restrictions in Nevada.

In a survey earlier this summer, rodeo fans said overwhelmingly that they wanted an NFR venue that would accommodate fans.

Organizers pledge to preserve the NFR experience that fans love and that has necessitated a one-year move out of Las Vegas.

The PRCA began looking for an alternate venue earlier in the summer.

Field stepped up.

Ultimately, this has been a thoughtful partnership between Texas, Globe Life Field, the cities of Arlington and Fort Worth, the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau, Visit Fort Worth, and the sports commissions of both Arlington and Fort Worth.

“The state of Texas knows how to do this,” Taylor said. “We’ve been impressed with how well this has come together for our rodeo cowboys and rodeo fans.”

The schedule also includes nightly Buckle Presentations, Benny Binion’s World Famous Wrangler NFR Bucking Horse Sale, the PRCA Awards Banquet and Gala, and the Pro Rodeo League of Women Style Show and Luncheon.

Sunday Observations by Christy

I sometimes wonder if we have reached a point of no return. Have we sunk to a depth of zero tolerance for anyone’s opinion that differs from our own?

Honestly, I don’t think you are stupid, racist, or anything else, if your opinion and belief differs from mine.

I promise. Now as a bit of a history nerd, if I think you have a fact wrong, I will

attempt to educate you. But I’m not fighting with you.

I won’t stop being your friend. I won’t delete you. I may unfollow you. But if 2 + 2 = 5 in your world, carry on. I will do the same.

I do wonder however, when was the last time you T R U T H F U L LY looked at another persons perspective?

Case in point, and some of you may disagree. I’m sure

someone will get mad. But follow me, if you will.

This last week on the anniversary of 9/11, a local station posted a memorial video. A woman in the comments said, “it’s been years, get over it”. And she was systematically ripped to shreds. I almost joined suit as it infuriated me.

Then someone said, “so was slavery”..... and she responded with “BINGO!” I had to step away.

Because it seriously angered me and I had just said the same to some friends. Then I had to say, wait a minute. She has a point. A valid point.

We can not continue to grieve the prior losses and atrocities of our nation and ancestors, on Pearl Harbor day, Patriots day, or any other date of remembrance.... and ask the African American community to forget the prior atrocities done to their ancestors. It’s hypocritical.

say, I in no way support violence, looting, theft, and the murder of anyone..... citizens or members of our police departments.

I believe ALL lives matter. I am the first to back our military.

I am the first to support our first responders. I believe in the constitution,

the amendments, the Flag, and America. I also believe in fair.

Happy Sunday peeps..... you can not tell one person there is a timeline on their pain, while continuing to grieve timelessly, your own. That argument is invalid. On to other things now, y’all be sweet to

one another.....

PLEASE. And don’t hate me, if my thoughts are different than yours.

I only wish to make you think. The same way I did, when I read her response.

May we find our way back to civility, and people thinking for themselves, soon.

Last week I wrote about deer season calamities -- things that go wrong, causing a bad day of hunting.

One event happened to also be my personal best day of teal hunting but wasn’t included in the deer derailment story. But before I get into that, let me say that SPECIAL TEAL SEASON just opened Saturday. It’s a 16-day season in which ONLY the three species of teal may be taken. Shooting anything else may co$t you. That special season closes Sunday, Sept. 27. The annual waterfowl survey was suspended this year, so we don’t have species numbers, but the areas that feed the Central Flyway received good precipitation, so ducks should be plentiful in Texas.

Where we hunt, teal arrive later, seldom in September. It was a beautiful opening day for all hunters, though: 68 degrees, no wind, songbirds calling, and cattle lowing in the distance. I hope teal hunters elsewhere had good hunting.

There’s another front already in the Dakotas bringing lows in the 50s, so cooler weather is coming. Maybe teal, too.

Teal can also be shot during Regular Duck Seasons later in the fall and winter. Teal shot then must be counted as part of the six-duck limit.

During the Special teal season and the Regular duck seasons – a Texas hunting license is required along with a Texas Migratory Game Bird endorsement and an endorsement

indicating you purchased the federal duck stamp. Kids under age 17 need only have a Youth Hunting license ($7), and no endorsements are required except Reptile and Amphibians. BUT all hunters must have the Harvest Information Certification on the license when obtaining a license.

Shotguns must be plugged to a threeshell capacity unless they permanently hold three or fewer.

The teal calamity omitted last week involved a manufacturer’s rep who accompanied us on a hunt once. He hit the bar several times the night before the hunt, which possibly contributed to his downfall – and FALL he did. It was the proverbial “good day for ducks”—

Ditches were full and flowing.

We had to cross one ditch and the man lost his balance and went all the way under with a loaded shotgun.

When he came up, a weed draped from his gun barrel. We helped him out of the

muddy water -- only later learning he had forgotten to unload his shotgun. There are two lessons in this story. He never should have walked with a loaded gun after hunting. And the bar may have been another problem.

I chose a spot at the far end of the lake.

Most of the ducks and shooting were at the other end. The shooting moved all the ducks out and directly toward me. Incoming shots are my best. A limit of six teal was easy – for a change.

“Thank You, Jesus!”

A police officer friend of mine, was called to a business in the town where he serves. A mother had locked her keys in her car. When he arrived he was greeted by the mom, her four year old daughter, and five year old son. He got his “kit” out of his squad car and had her car open within 30 seconds.

As the door of the car opened, the four year old daughter shouted, “Thank you, Jesus!”

As he told me the story, Proverbs 22:6 came to mind, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, will not depart from it.” I have to believe this little girl is off to a great start.

Okay.......I’m pissed. This is going to be a two part editorial and you are going to have to read all of it in order to tie the two parts together. I usually try to stay away from politics, but politics are pretty much involved in everything that we do these days, whether it be National, State, local, church, little league baseball, and the list goes on forever and the party never ends. Okay.....the first part. I was traveling from my Winnie office to my Huntsville office last Wednesday evening and as usual I was in a hurry because I had two meetings at 6:00 pm. in two places and I just couldn’t be at both meetings so I tried to listen to both via teleconference. That didn’t work so well and I had to request the video tape from one of the meetings, but anyway, by the time that I got packed up and left it was after 8:00 pm. I admit that I was on the phone talking to one of my favorite Commissioners and not paying particular attention when I arrived at the four way stop in Rye, Texas. As I turned North to head towards Livingston, red and blue lights appeared in my rear view mirror. I pulled over, thinking that I had not completely stopped at the stop sign. As a very

young Liberty County Officer approached the truck, he identified himself and told me that I had failed to signal my intentions at the stop sign as I was making a right turn.

The first words out of my mouth were “Really”. I was stunned and I immediately regretted saying that word. However, it was 9:30 pm. and he and I were the only two vehicles within miles. I had arrived at the four way before him and I felt like I had the right of way and it really should not have mattered to him which way I was going to go because he had to wait on me, but the law is the law and I was wrong. The point is that besides the rude comment, I obeyed his request and didn’t get out of the truck and run or pull a gun or a knife on him or in any other way disobey his request and miraculously, my roadside visit turned out okay.

He returned shortly and he only issued a written warning and I was thankful for that and I apologized profusely for my rude comment. He was a nice young officer and maybe he had information that they were looking for a truck like mine and he had other reasons for stopping me and the signal was just probable cause. I will never know,

but nonetheless, I was wrong, I was rude, and I am thankful that I didn’t go to jail. Poor guy was probably so confused when he asked me to roll down my back window and he saw a backseat full of newspapers, that he really didn’t know what to do. Anyway, that was only a small delay in my travels and that’s not what I’m pissed about.

What has got me fired up is a news clip that I saw on Fox News about this savage that walked up to a Police cruiser and shot two Los Angeles Police Officers. Both Officers were shot in the head and are in critical condition.

To make matters worse, protesters showed up at the Emergency Room and were blocking the entrance so that other Emergency Vehicles could not get to the entrance. They were chanting “We Hope They Die” as police tried to clear the roadway.

Now, here’s where the politics come in. I’m pretty sure that blocking an Emergency vehicle is a crime and all of those protesters should have been arrested and given three hots and a cot for about a week. At the very least they should have been ticketed and then arrested when they didn’t show up for their court date and then they could have had

three hots and a cot for about a month. Unfortunately, some of these liberal Mayor’s, City Councils, and Governor’s won’t back their Police Departments and let the Officer’s do their job.

And, then the liberal prosecutor won’t prosecute and the liberal Judge’s won’t impose sentences that would make a fellow(or a gal) think twice about breaking the law.

Dan Bongino, a retired New York City Police Officer, told about the time when Rudy Guliani was Mayor and they arrested 700 protestors who were blocking a bridge, now under a liberal Mayor, you have business owners in New York who are afraid to open their business because of rioter’s and violent damaging protests. This mess has

It’s been over 100 days since the incident with George Floyd and probably most of these rioter’s have forgotten his name and where he called home. These folks are simply acting like criminals because that’s what they are and need to be locked up. Some people say that we can’t put them in jail because of Covid-19.....Oh well, you shouldn’t have started fires and broken into places and shot and stabbed people and then you could be choosing where you wanted to avoid the pandemic instead of being incarcerated. In addition to that, George Floyd’s Go Fund Me page has raised over $14 Million, and I wonder how much the Go Fund Me page will be

for these Police Officers who have been killed or severely wounded. Okay, I’ll get off of my soapbox, but I am glad to be associated with communities that have had peaceful protests and good law enforcement. God bless Texas, God bless Chambers County, God bless Walker County, and God bless all of our law enforcement and first responders.
