While we may not be able to continue our normal Memorial Day remembrance ceremonies across our four Texas State Veteran Cemeteries, we will be remembering our fallen virtually this year.

observe a ceremony dedicated to those that have put their lives on the line to serve our country.

missioner Henry joined Commissioner White in a NO vote, but the item passed with a 3-2 vote in favor of the calling for an election. Both Commissioners cited the current Covid-19 situation and the uncertainty of future County budgets as a reason not to ask the taxpayer for any more money.

Other items that were voted on and passed by the Court were the adoption of new ambulance rates for services. The current price for services rendered when calling 911 have been in effect since 10/01/2011 and certainly the cost of materials, supplies, and labor has risen since then and the Court adopted rates that are in line with other services in the region that become effective on 06-01-2020. Captain Tim Whitecotton was in Court to deliver some good news in the

name of a $58,008.00 grant that came from the Department of Justice. Captain Whitecotton said that the money would be used for badly needed radios and computers. Commissioners extended the disaster declaration for the current Covid-19 situation and approved a proclamation for Hurricane Preparedness Week.

The routine items such as reports, bill paying, and minutes of previous meetings were all approved. The next regular meeting of the Walker County Commissioners Court will be Tuesday, May 26, 2020 as Monday the 25th is Memorial Day and it will be held more than likely in the District Courtroom of the Walker County Courthouse due to the current Governors orders on social distancing.

back to Huntsville, the town he loves, in 1977.

In August of 1977, Lyle opened the Facemaker, which was voted this year as the #1 salon and spa in the state of Texas

by Lux magazine! His salon has been also voted “Huntsville’s Best” 29 times in the Huntsville Item.

Lyle and his wife, Susie, played a role in the creation of Alpha Omega Academy over 20 years ago and 16

This item had come up for discussion at a previous court with no action, but this time EMS Director John Neighbors was in court to answer any questions and plead his case as to the urgency of the purchase of a new unit. The County had embarked on a plan a couple of years ago to try to purchase new units to update the aging fleet and

Neighbors told the court that if the decision was made that day, it would still be several months before the ambulance would be delivered and ready for service. Commissioner White was opposed to the purchase of the $248,505.00 vehicle stating that with the current situation of the Covid-19 shut-

down that the County was merely guessing as to their future revenues and he did not want to be in a situation of raising taxes down the road.

Commissioner White lost his argument as the court voted 4-1 to approve the purchase.

The Advocates also took time to give each other shout-outs.

“I would like to give the biggest shout-out to Sharon Dieringer!!! She has been such a great positive influence in my CASA journey from the beginning! Sharon has not only mentored me in creative ways to grow as an advocate, but she has also served as an important person in my future endeavors.

With the help of Sharon, I was accepted into Loyola University of Chicago’s Dual degree program of Social Work and Family Law. I truly cannot thank Sharon enough for the amazing work she has continued to do with CASA! She has inspired me to be the best social worker and CASA advocate that I can be! Sharon is a Rockstar,” Mariah Hardy shared.

Catharine James lauded fellow volunteer, Tonie Sikes, “I would like to say a word of appreciation for my fellow advocate, Tonie Sikes.

We worked together on the hospitality committee for the Amplifying Advocacy Conference.

Tonie had wonderful and creative ideas to bless our speakers. She was always patient and calm, especially when I felt frustrated! I appreciate how organized and timely she was.

Tonie has such a sweet spirit about her, and I can see how her lovely qualities make her an outstanding advocate.”

The attendees to this unique gathering celebrated the four people that have served the local CASA program for more than five years. Although most cases are closed within 12-18 months, Jeanmarie Murray has faithfully stayed committed to be her CASA child’s one constant for the past six years. Chris and Cindy Supan have faithfully served many CASA kids for seven years. Pat Stephenson has served this community for ten years.

The evening did not pass without praise bestowed upon the Board of Directors and their tireless efforts. Keith Ahee, Mary Charlotte Elliot, Maria Busby, and Terri Cook received recognition for the six years of service

Sadly, these four have nearly completed their terms, but we have several Board Associates who are waiting to seamlessly step into these “big shoes”.

The staff sprinkled various door prize drawings, most festive awards, and time for sharing throughout the evening, but imparting the information regarding the number of children being reunited with families or finding their “forever homes” was a priority for the evening. Since January 1, 2019, 135 children exited foster care: 19 Adoptions, 7 Aged-Out, 2 Emancipations, 41 Living with Relatives, and 66 Returned Home.

These children spent 2,198 months in foster care or almost 66,000 days.

The evening culminated with sharing the nominations for the “New Advocate of the Year” and “Ad-

vocate of the Year”. It was difficult to narrow the list to six nominees because the CASAs in this tri-county program are phenomenal.

The staff reviewed the activities of 2019 and nominated Mariah Hardy, Catharine James, Lauren Rubenstein, Judy Vandiver, Trish Wilson, and Pam Zinnante. When Catharine James won the award, she graciously accepted the accolade with joyful tears.

The staff experienced the same struggle narrowing down the “Advocate of the Year” nominees. Finally, they made a list of the top six nominees: Sharon Dieringer, Matt Jugran, Amanda Marshall, Mary Partida, Renee Spencer and Lois Stehlik. Sharon Dieringer accepted the award with humility and poise.

All in attendance nominated who on the Zoom call created the best festive atmosphere. Some had back-

drops; others dressed for the occasion. After the moderators for the evening announced the winner, everyone was encouraged to stay on the call to talk and share. The beginning of CASA training always begins by building community. It is beautiful to see people of different races, genders, socioeconomic standings, religious beliefs, etc. congregate (virtually), encourage one another, appreciate each other, and stand together under the banner of being a “Voice for the Voiceless”. The abuse and neglect of children spikes during crises like these. CASA of Walker, San Jacinto, and Trinity Counties has an army of people standing ready to fight for our most vulnerable population.

Program (PPP) loans as a much needed lifeline for small businesses during the pandemic.

The primary purpose of PPP loans is to help businesses retain their existing staff.

Businesses who use the funds to do this may be eligible for a 100% forgiveness incentive.

The funds can be used for expenses such as payroll costs and benefits, rent, utilities, and interest on mortgages. Most significantly, PPP loans can be forgiven, fully or in part, depending on if borrowers maintain head counts, keep payroll at pre-pandemic levels, and use their loan for permitted expenses.

How much is available I’m sure you can imagine how quickly the $349 billion appropriation was exhausted. Now, in less than two weeks, PPP has received a second round of funding. The new bill provides another $310 billion for PPP loans but established a key carve-out for

small and midsize lending institutions— community banks. $60 billion is being set aside so that community banks can swiftly get funds where they are most needed. The new bill also authorizes $60 billion for disaster relief loans (Economic Injury Disaster Loans), $75 billion for hospitals and $25 billion for testing.

Local action, local results Our four of banking locations that serve Southeast Texas acted quickly to get systems in place to immediately assist 83 small businesses for a total of approximately $10 million in PPP loans.

And, with a lot of late hours and dogged determination, these loans were all processed in approximately 14 days. These 83 local businesses include many industry lines: farmers, ranchers, trucking, petrochemical, electrical, home builders, landscaping, auto parts/ repair and maintenance, convenience stores,

accounting and CPA firms, attorneys, and hunting & fishing lodges. Every single one of our small business applicants got processed and funded.

Quite an accomplishment for our small staff and results that we are all enormously proud of.

Stepping up to support our local businesses in any way we can, we worked to calm the hectic, stressful process of getting a desperately needed influx of cash into the hands of our businesses to keep them running. We are here and available to assist with the second round of PPP funding and we will be here to help our business customers plan for the use of the loan funds and then the recovery that we all know will come. That’s what we do as community bankers. We are all in this together and we sincerely appreciate the trust you place in us.

• For larger branches, Scott says anvil-style shears can be a good choice, which feature one sharp blade closing against a flat, wide blade and work much like a knife cutting against a cutting board. However, he warns that they should be used selectively, as they crush plant stems

more than bypass-style pruners.

• When it comes to branches of more than 1/2inch (12.7 millimeters) in diameter, loppers are the best choice. Like hand pruning tools, there are bypass loppers, which operate much like a large, long-handled set of bypass shears, while anvil-style loppers use just one cutting blade.

“Bypass loppers generally cut with more precision, while anvil-style loppers are typically capable of generating more cutting force,” Scott said.

Sunday Observations by Christy

My daughter turned 28 this week. As any of our kids are, or should be, she is the center of my world.

Spoiled, admittedly, but aren’t all of our kids to a degree? She is sassy, and a twenty something, and all that entails. But she is a cool human being.

For that, I thank God. I think that gift came from him, with the presentation of her.

That being said, one thing she told me has stuck with me for several days. It wasnt thank you for

the gifts, the video, her lunch, or any of the monetary things she received from me. She simply said, “thank you Momma, for always making me feel thought about, 24/7”. Let that sink in. To thank someone for making them feel thought about. Sounds simple doesnt it? But is it?

When was the last time you reached out to someone just to say, I am thinking of you? To show you care? Do your loved ones KNOW you

think of them daily?

Gosh if they dont, please change that. I have family that lives miles from me, but I sure hope they know I think of them all the time. I know I will be working on it. I have friends as well, that I wonder, have I made you feel thought of?

It really is something every single one of us could work on.

I got the sweetest card in the mail the other day, from a dear friend. She just wanted me to know she was thinking of me. She missed lunch at “our” spot, and looked forward to us resuming our lunches.

Covid has certainly made us appreciate the things we used to take for granted.

We miss lunch with friends, a beer with a buddy, dinner with parents, and hugs. I miss hugs. We should seriously make a list of what we miss, right now. Then when life resumes, to whatever our new normal is, perhaps we wont take those thing for granted as easily. I have cancelled lunch with friends because it was raining.

HOW DUMB IS THAT???? Because

of rain, I missed that opportunity to connect.

As humans, we must do better. We must take this as an opportunity to change our ways. To stop being so damn busy, that we forget

We had fished several hours on a windy afternoon with no luck. Vicky had paddled into a likely looking inlet somewhat out of the wind and I was fishing about 150 yards away. She paddled toward me as if she had caught something she wanted to show off. Instead, she wanted to tell me about something that nearly caught HER. She was still hyper as she narrated her adventure. She had cast into the back of the cove and begun retrieving her lure.

As she was watching her line and lure, she heard loud splashes hastily coming her way from the other side of the cove.

Reacting instinctively, she dropped her rod in the kayak, grabbed her paddle and frantically back- paddled without looking to see what was splashing. She’s a strong paddler and her kayak glides easily across the surface – especially when the adrenalin is flowing. All that helped and to get her out into deeper water rapidly and away

from whatever it was that was threatening her.

She said it was a big alligator. I asked her how big. She replied, “You tell ME,” pointing toward the cove. An alligator, looking to be ten to 12-feet long, was menacingly floating just outside the cove.

Vicky was lucky.

When the tour boat picked us up, we told the skipper about Vicky’s frightening encounter and he motored closer to the gator to give his passengers a good look – and pictures.

The big reptile was still lingering on the surface, almost daring us to come closer. It looked even bigger and more threatening up close.

We decided it was possibly guarding a nest. I spoke this week to Jonathan Warner, TPWD’s alligator program leader on the Murphree Wildlife Management Area near Port Arthur.

Warner said that would have been a little early for a female guarding a nest. He said it could have been a male either

Lifestyle protecting its territory or perhaps interested in the lure she was casting. I once hooked a gator on a topwater lure on the Sheldon Lake State Park, near Houston).

Warner also said the alligator mating season is May-June, with the earliest nesting occurring in late May. Females become a little “edgy” after eggs are laid and will stay with the hatchlings for a while – sometimes even up to a year.

Although alligator attacks on humans are rare, it’s wise to avoid contact with them.

Several altercations have occurred over fish caught by wadefishermen and duck hunters retrieving birds.

Dogs in alligator waters can be at risk, too.

Alligators may only be hunted in Texas during prescribed seasons, and subject to stringent rules.

I still remember staring in amazement at my first grandson. He was able to lift his head up while lying on his stomach and was just over a week old! I was bragging to everyone in the room about this “superhuman” feat when my daughter-in-law, Amy said, “The book says he is supposed to be able to do that by now.”

“Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you.... be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.”(1 Timothy 4:13-15) Are we doing what the “Book” says we should be doing by now?

Ok......I want you guys and gals to know that I live a double life. Obviously, if I’m telling you about it then it can’t be too much of a secret, but I have to have something to write about this week.

I thought about this subject during the week and miraculously I remembered the topic when it came time to write my column. What prompted me to choose this week’s subject was my shoes.....I know, I know, that’s kind of a strange thing to bring a double life to the forefront, but that’s exactly how it happened. I was looking in my closet and trying to decide which shoes to wear that particular day and I realized that my shoe selection in Huntsville is the exact same thing as I have in Winnie. I actually have two pairs of the exact same shoes.....one pair at each house. I have more than two pairs of shoes..... one pair of each variety in each place. And then it hit me, not only are my shoes duplicated, but my clothes, my toothbrush, pretty much everything.

I have bluejeans in both places, shirts in both places, shoes in both places, and pretty much anything that I need to go about my everyday functions in both plac-

es. I bring a duffle bag with me as I travel between houses, but in reality the only thing that I really need to carry is my little weekly medicine pill planner. I’ve got this traveling thing down to a science and I work pretty hard to keep everything in the right place. If I go on a trip and I leave from Huntsville, then my dirty clothes come back to Huntsville, regardless if I end up returning to Winnie. I just simply keep my dirty clothes in a separate bag and bring them back to Huntsville to be washed with the Huntsville clothes and the same applies for my Winnie clothes. That way I don’t end up with everything in one place and nothing to wear in the other place. Alright, enough about my double life....I just thought that I would share.

Now, on to another topic. This past weekend was what has become known as “Topless Weekend” at Crystal Beach, Texas. Some people call it “Jeep Weekend”, but it basically is a whole bunch of folks in jeeps and jacked up trucks that invade the beach and hang out for the weekend. Some of the party goers get a little carried away and

take the topless thing to fruition, but that’s pretty limited and usually after the alcoholic beverages start flowing, but that’s another topic for another column. This thing started a few years ago and was pretty much harmless and was a group of folks with similar vehicles having a good time, but lately, as with most good things, it has gotten really out of hand and is causing all kinds of trouble. Some of the retail establishments love the weekend because of the incredible extra income, but some places just close down because the income ain’t worth the hassle. Law enforcement and EMS have gotten to where they dread the weekend because of all the trouble that it causes and this year may have just set a new record for craziness and stupidity. At last count over 127 people had been hauled off to Galveston County jail, untold numbers of medical calls including stationing a life flight helicopter at the beach, and this year during one of the fist fights that broke out, so did gunfire with two patients being transported in critical condition. As of Sunday afternoon there were about 50 vehicles that were

stranded due to slashed tires and some of the RV’s had been broken into and ransacked. Authorities simply cannot expend enough resources to cover the ten miles or so of craziness that all occurs within about a 48 hour period.

Now, I’ll put my two cents worth of opinion in here. How can these folks be so reckless and get carried away and then go crazy when the authorities don’t just drop everything that they are doing and come to their aid. You know, having a heart attack while camping on the beach is one thing, but

Walker County Press-Page 14 falling off of the cab of a truck as it’s driving down the highway and you are in a drunken stuper is something totally different. Yet, medical personnel respond regardless of the situation, as does the police and other resources. Thankfully, these folks are professionals and respond regardless of how stupid you are. THANK YOU first responders.

It all comes back to one thing.....people have to have some accountability and some responsibility for their own actions and this event needs to have a lot of both. As with most situ-

ations, a few bad apples will ruin the whole situation for everybody else and it wouldn’t surprise me if they just closed the beach next year and didn’t let anybody go and enjoy themselves.

I’m not quite sure how they can do that, but I betcha that some Galveston County officials will be looking into that possibility after this year. I just know that I’m staying as far away as possible. I don’t have a pair of flip flops at either house, anyway. Till next time, I’m..........
