On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for your enduring support that enhances Waldron’s outstanding academics, competitive athletics program, meaningful service projects and engaging extracurricular activities. No matter the size of the gift, your support makes a direct impact on the lives and educational experiences of our students. The fiscal year 2015-16 commemorated our 92nd year in Mercy. Through last year’s school theme “We are a Family in Mercy,” students, parents and alumni celebrated the many ways that the Waldron Mercy community continues to grow and thrive as a “family.” Especially through the spirit of volunteerism, the Waldron family continually demonstrates that we are a strong community that enjoys working together for our children and our wider community. Over the past year our families prepared over 1,000 H.O.P.E. lunches for the homeless in Kensington, donated 402 Giving Tree presents for families in need, and sewed dozens of pillowcases for Case for Smiles as part of the MLK Day of Service. These are just a few of the many service projects that were completed by our community. School-wide spirit was shown, despite the cold weather, during Homecoming as members of the Waldron family cheered on its teams and contributed hours of volunteer support to the event. Volunteerism through Parent Association events, Math Explorations, the annual fund and presence at Tigerfest rounded out a year for which we can all be proud.

We are also extremely delighted by the accomplishments of our students and faculty. Waldron Mercy students continue to excel in competitions like the Toshiba ExploraVision program (twice recognized through national and regional wins and 12 consecutive years of receiving honorable mention recognition) and the St. Joseph’s Preparatory Forensics Tournament (winning first place this year.) We also celebrate the commitment and excellence of our faculty, many of whom have received years of service recognition this year. We would also like to acknowledge the excellent work in continued professional development. A number of our faculty participated in the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo and Conference and presented ways to enhance learning through the use of new technology. Waldron has a unique and precious mission where a diverse, faith-filled community demonstrates its commitment to the gospel values of mercy and justice. Every day our students show the joy of discovery through their approach to academics, service and faith. Each of you plays a role in providing these wonderful opportunities and in advancing our mission. Throughout this Report of Gifts you will see the names of our contributors and read the stories about why they made Waldron a philanthropic priority. You will understand more deeply how we put their support to work to serve our future leaders.

he Monroy family joined the Waldron Mercy community when daughters, Isabella and Regina, were entering third grade. Almost immediately, Ivette and Gerardo became involved with the parents campaign for the Waldron Annual Fund, serving as homeroom chairs. Their commitment to Waldron’s success as a community and as a school cannot be described any better than how they themselves said it, “We as parents must have a special bond with our children's school. This is the place where they acquire the necessary tools to live an independent and prosperous future. We provide the best we can for their lives at home so it should be the same at school. When we donate to the annual fund we are making sure our kids have the best place to reach their full potential. Any amount is important and our effort will be compensated with a bright and happy life for our kids.”
Ivette Monroy visited the grade 6 Spanish class and taught about the Spanish Christmas custom of Posada, the dramatized search of Mary and Joseph for housing for the night. After explaining the customs, Mrs. Monroy and the students traveled classroom to classroom singing and celebrating this tradition.

r. Michael Scott, a pediatric neurosurgeon and professor of medicine in Boston, has a deep commitment to Mercy education. “I continue to feel to this day that my eight years at Waldron gave me a tremendous head start for my eventual career in medicine. Our English, French and Latin language preparation, and our history and geography education were far superior to anything my other high school classmates had experienced in their primary schools.” Over the years, Dr. Scott has contributed generously and continuously to the Waldron Annual Fund with gratitude for the educators who encouraged his love of learning and his discipline. He shared a story about how this encouragement really was a gift in itself. “I owe what has become a life-long love of the piano to devoted and gifted music teachers, in particular Sister Aimee Marie, who gave me piano lessons for months before my parents knew about it.”

Dr. Scott remains a loyal and generous contributor because, to this day, he values the education he received at Waldron Academy for Boys. “The rigors of the Sisters’ educational model, although probably not in fashion today, taught us to be disciplined learners. I will always be grateful to the Sisters of Mercy for my Waldron Academy education.”
Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) projects spark creativity and provide model opportunities for team work. These grade 6 students are programming a robot to travel through a model replicating a scene from “The City of Ember.”

PHILANTHROPY AND SERVICE AT HOME AND SCHOOL Drs. Alyn and Ellen Jo Waller P’05 P’06 Morgan ’05 and Eryka ’06

haritas Foundation, established in 2011, seeks to positively impact the lives of individuals through sowing financial seeds into organizations that have life-changing missions. Founded by Drs. Alyn and Ellen Jo Waller, Charitas Foundation is truly a family effort with both Morgan and Eryka serving on the board. When it came time to select recipients of their foundation gifts, the Waller family was unanimous in picking Waldron. “Waldron has everything we look for: education, arts, community.” Waldron has received generous gifts in support of student scholarships for the last three years from Charitas Foundation. When the Waller’s established the Foundation, their intention was to continue to make philanthropy a significant part of their family’s lives and to create a legacy for their daughters. “The girls learned service at home first, and it was wonderful for that to be reinforced at school at Waldron.” Mrs. Waller remembers fondly many service trips to St. Columba or visits to Waldron from the Clymer School, one of their outreach partners.

From a young age, the girls picked up on the family’s commitment to serve others. Eryka, at age 9, asked to adopt a child from Africa for Christmas and to this day continues to support the child. Both girls took the commitment one step farther and both, after college and graduate school, landed in service fields. Morgan is a family therapist in Baltimore. She graduated from Auburn University with an B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies and from Johns Hopkins University with an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling. Eryka is a social worker in the NICU at Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia. Eryka attended Temple University and went onto to earn her master’s degree in Social Work from Bryn Mawr College. “We have been tremendously blessed. That’s not everyone’s story and that’s why we started the foundation. We believe that ‘those that have’ have to step up and it has been the biggest gift to us to give back.”
WMA students raised funds through the annual Mercy Day Walk-a-thon to buy supplies to make 20,000 meals with STOP Hunger Now. This is the second year the entire school participated in this student-led initiative.

The 2016 Sister Suzanne Gallagher Award for Distinguished Teaching was presented to Mrs. Liz Meyer, science specialist. This award is given each year to a Waldron educator whose commitment and performance clearly represent the educational philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy. It was established by brothers Peter J. Farnese '95 and Thomas P. Farnese '98 to recognize the love, concern and leadership that Sister Suzanne displayed during her tenure at Waldron Academy for Boys and Waldron Mercy Academy.

Thanks to the generous support of Waldron’s vendors, corporate sponsors, and local businesses through the Pennsylvania Tax Credit Programs, dozens of qualified families have received tuition assistance. Waldron Mercy Academy has participated in the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs since 2006 and received over $742,096 in contributions. ot much time passes between sightings of Michael or Kristen in the hallways at Waldron. Whether volunteering for Parent Association functions, serving on the Tigerfest planning committee, lending a hand in their children’s classrooms, or making calls to fellow parents on behalf of the Waldron Annual Fund, the Gormans can be counted on to offer their support. They have been dedicated volunteers and contributors each year, and their role as chairs of the Tiger Pride Society is yet another example of how they are always there for Waldron.

WMA students celebrated 5 Catholic Academy League championships this year including boys varsity basketball, boys JV basketball, JC girls basketball, varsity baseball, and coed JV soccer.
2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS
TIGERFEST 2016 WMA celebrated its 15th annual Tigerfest Auction on March 19. The theme, “Horses, Hats and Hospitality” was a play on the activities and attire at derby races. More than 300 parents, alumni, and friends joined in the fun of games and silent and live auctions raising nearly $150,000. Jim and Ann King and Lou and Lisa Marchese co-chaired the event. Al and Kristine Perry were honored as dedicated contributors and volunteers, having co-chaired past Tigerfest Auctions. Funds from the event advance the mission of WMA and ten percent of annual proceeds are donated to a number of WMA’s long-standing outreach partners.

“IT’S LIKE COMING HOME” Bob Barnes ’58 Tiger Pride Society, Alumni Chair
“I
continue to use the values I was taught at Waldron in my everyday life,” remarked Bob Barnes when asked what impact Waldron had on him. Bob has been a devoted alumnus and enjoys visiting the campus and Sr. Natalie, his former teacher, whenever he is able. He added, “When I visit Waldron, it’s like coming home.” Originally from Overbrook, Bob’s family moved out to Chester County while he was a student at Waldron. His mother drove the long trek to and from school every day from the West Chester area as Bob did not want to leave Waldron to enroll in a school closer to home. Bob is pictured on the left with Jack Devlin '56 and Matthew McCloskey '55.
Part of a long tradition of Mercy education, Bob's uncles, Rev. Anthony Zeits, S.J. '26 and Joseph Zeits '28, were members of Waldron's earliest graduating classes, and Bob's mother, Louise Zeits Barnes, graduated from Mater Misericordia (Merion Mercy) in 1938. The best testimonial to Bob’s feelings about Waldron came from his wife Barbara at the Annual All-Class Reunion they attended in November. “Today is Bob’s birthday and he remarked that there is no place he’d rather be than at Waldron on his birthday.”

hen it was decided to re-launch our leadership donor society, we wanted to spend careful attention on our young alumni. Waldron has so many talented young professionals in a diverse number of fields. What holds common through all of them is their commitment to serving others just as they did when students at Waldron. Greg was no exception to this; in fact, his commitment to service was the driving force in making a leadership gift to Waldron. While far from home and living on the West Coast, Greg remains committed to serving the next generation of Waldron students. “I cannot easily summarize why it is so important to me to support WMA. I spent 11 years there; the most formative early years. To this day I love learning, and feel a tremendous gratitude to those in my life that helped grow that seed. I give to honor that gratitude and, more importantly, to help spread high quality education to the following generation.”

J
ackie Gondek Giovanoni is a member of one of the first co-ed classes resulting from the merger of Merion Mercy and Waldron Academy. To say that this class bonded seamlessly is an understatement, as many of the members of the class of 1990 have become life-long friends. As a student, Jackie always took her studies seriously while actively participating in the many extracurricular activities offered. Jackie graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame and Villanova University. Always confident and poised, Jackie is now the Director of Lilly Diabetes, Advocacy and Professional Relations for Eli Lilly and Company. She resided for many years in Indiana with her husband and two sons and has recently returned to the area. When asked why Jackie has continued to support WMA over the years, she stated, “Waldron is a second home to me. Many of my fondest memories and lifelong friends were made at Merion Mercy Lower School and then Waldron Mercy Academy. Waldron gave me so much and I’m happy to give back so others may experience the Mercy tradition. That tradition of compassion, kindness and friendship inspire me every day.”

2015 GOLF AND TENNIS CLASSIC The 22nd annual Golf & Tennis Classic was a success with over 150 guests participating and attending the special evening reception. The Classic, hosted again by our generous sponsor Williamson Hospitality at Llanerch Country Club, raised over $30,000 for our technology program.
