Students Sort and Package Items for Cradles to Crayons

Students in grades three, four and five sorted and packaged donations from WMA families for Cradles to Crayons this winter. A call went out to the WMA community, and families responded, filling almost 200 bags of donations. This was the Harvey family’s second trip to Guatemala, where they built stoves for two families who previously had to cook their meals over an open fire.

WMA Students Again Named National Winners in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Competition Third grade students Lela Miller, Lola Hewitt and Emma Braun were named as National Winners in the 2015 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Competition for their Sea Turtle Assistant Rod (S.T.A.R.) technology, which uses a system of sea turtle “rescue packs” that are powered by solar cells. This is the second year that WMA students have been named as National Winners. The winners, along with Liz Meyer, science specialist, and Lucille Morinelli, librarian, will head to Washington, D.C., for a gala awards weekend in June!

The S.T.A.R. technology of the future uses a system of sea turtle “rescue packs” that incorporate night vision cameras to track the mother turtle as she builds her nest on the beach. The packs are also equipped with temperature and motion sensors that monitor the temperature of the nest and the motion of the hatchlings, and a light beacon to mimic moonlight on the horizon and guide the hatchlings as they journey to the sea.

To participate in the national phase of competition, students designed a website, including a one to two minute video, and built a prototype of the S.T.A.R. technology.

Congratulations to our Honors Chorale and Women’s Choir for their Gold Awards at the Heritage Music Festival, held in Williamsburg, Va., this year.

First grade teachers Valerie Corrado and Eileen Aurand attended “New resources and strategies for your first grade classroom program.”

Liz Meyer, science specialist, completed an intensive 90-hour online course, “Google Tools for Educators.” She is also enrolled in a 30-hour online professional development course titled “Effective Strategies Supporting Science Instruction.”

Sam Sheng, grade four teacher, attended “60 in 60: The Conference.”

Trish Lockett, director of marketing and communication, completed a sevenweek certification course on Social Media Strategy. She also completed a six-week online course on branding.

Tiger’s Postgame Update

Our JV boys basketball team followed up on a 2013-2014 Catholic Academy League (CAL) Championship season by winning the St. Margaret’s Thanksgiving Tournament, this season. The JV boys, with another championship within reach, finished in second place in the CAL after losing a heartbreaking two-point game in their final league game of the season. Overall, the team lost just three games on the season. Our JV girls basketball team was comprised of all new girls with no returning players from the previous season. The team won several CAL games despite their inexperience and many may receive varsity experience next season. Our varsity boys team lost in a very exciting semifinal game in the CAL playoffs to cap off a nice season. The 2015-2016 season could be the year WMA reclaims the Boys Championship as our JV teams have been excellent the past two seasons.

Our swim team capped off its most competitive season in years with many swimmers receiving awards at the Catholic Academy League Championship Meet. Below is a list of our award winners:

The Class of 1967 Scholarship Fund WE HAVE EXCITING NEWS TO SHARE! Through the generosity of Bill Kuharich ’67, The Class of 1967 Scholarship Fund has been established. “Waldron made a difference in my life and I now want to help make a difference for others,” says Bill. The Class of 1967 scholarship will provide tuition assistance to a deserving sixth, seventh or eighth grader for whom a Waldron education would not otherwise be possible.

Tigerfest 2015: Blue (and Gold) Hawaii Nearly 300 WMA parents, faculty, staff and friends had a paradisiacal evening of socializing, playing games, winning prizes and bidding on auction items, all to support our school and our children, at Tigerfest 2015: Blue (and Gold) Hawaii, presented by Kairos Real Estate Partners, on March 28.

Thank you to all who sponsored, volunteered, bought ads and raffles, underwrote, donated and attended. Mahalo especially to co-chairs Christine and Tim Conners, and the dedicated committee that made the evening one lovely luau.

We raised more than $190,000 to help fund capital improvements, financial aid, outreach, and teacher and staff benefits. A highlight of the evening was the Fund-a-Cause for new bleachers in the Dixon Gym. This portion of the evening alone raised $22,000.

Another highlight of the evening was honoring Matt and Donna Phillips, who co-chaired in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Moving to the West Coast, Maisha continued to volunteer.

“While my volunteer efforts here were helpful and fulfilling, there was a stronger desire tugging at my heart. I wanted to be a part of the ‘Global Village,’” says Maisha. “So I set out on a two-month journey to South Africa and Indonesia.”

Spending most of her time in South Africa, her eyes were opened to the remnants of apartheid. The continued separation and drastic gap between social classes (in terms of education and opportunity), many times determined by the color of one’s skin, was saddening. “As an African American woman this hit my heart very hard. I thought to myself many times, ‘How are you not free in your own country?’” Maisha says.

Her journey began with a missionary trip to Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Swaziland, where she was able to travel with a mature group of individuals with strong, faith-filled roots where they interacted, assisted and prayed with the amazing people of South Africa.

Next stop was Muizenburg, Cape Town. Each day the group was bussed to the school placement located in an area called Capricorn, one of the roughest poverty-stricken areas. The children are placed at this particular school because “no one wants them.” They are seen as trouble

makers who come from homes where abuse, alcoholism, drug addiction and gang involvement is prevalent. “When I tell you that these children are amazing, I truly mean amazing! Yes, they are rough around the edges, but when shown boundaries they are extremely respectful,” Maisha recalls. “There is unbelievable potential here but no one gives them the time of day.” Her children got the “leftovers” when it came to books, uniforms, shoes and, on a deeper level, opportunity.

Maisha’s final stop was Bali, Indonesia, where she taught the children of Ubud. She found the children were so willing and excited to learn the language so that they could communicate with tourists. The differences in poverty in both countries were apparent. Although the people of Bali were poor, she felt they had a stronger support throughout the community, which made them all the richer.

“I have nothing but praise and thanks to give to my God for blessing me with the opportunity to travel and volunteer abroad. This has been a dream of mine and after this journey I’ve realized that God has so much more work to do through me when it comes to supporting the ‘Global Village,’” Maisha says.

Upon her return to the United States, Maisha saw a Facebook post on the Waldron Mercy Alumni page sharing that the children were preparing lunches for underprivileged children around the world. “I was so proud of them! That article made my heart smile,” she beams.

“This is what Waldron is about, this is what the Sisters of Mercy are about. This is the proverb, ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child,’ in action.”

...but doesn’t end here

and her sister, Amber ’98, were guided by one of their parents’ favorite African proverbs, “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child.” They have always been taught to give back and help those in need. This value was further instilled as they began their education at Waldron Mercy Academy.

Jack Zeller ’68 began his service to WMA in March 2003, when he served on the Advancement Committee.

Then and Now Sr. Catherine Kealy

Sr. Catherine Kealy was a kind-hearted Waldron Academy staff member in the 1970s and early 1980s. The daughter of Catherine and Francis Kealy, she was born at home in West Philadelphia.

She joined a brother and a sister, who also entered the religious life as a Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Sister Catherine attended St. Rose of Lima School and graduated from West Catholic Girls High School. She went on to earn her bachelor of arts from Villanova University and a master’s degree in theology from St. Bonaventure.

“My parents were my greatest inspiration to become a religious Sister of Mercy,” says Sr. Catherine. “The sisters who taught me throughout elementary and high school, Sr. Mary Virginia in particular, were also instrumental in cultivating my religious vocation.”

“My memories of my time at Waldron are vivid and lasting. I remember well an alum in later years who came back to tell me how much he appreciated something I said in class years earlier. Drawing a circle on the board and placing a small dot inside, I said, ‘God knows the big picture…we only know a little piece.’ He mentioned he has tried to live by this belief daily,” she recalls. Another graduate commented to Sister that he “never knew there was so much power in a little bell.” The bell in question was used to monitor students in the Cafeteria in the morning.

Sister taught first to fourth grades in elementary schools from 1950 to 1962. For the next two years, Sister served as assistant postulant director for the Sisters of Mercy. In 1964, Sr. Catherine became principal at St. Malachy School in Philadelphia, where she also taught fifth grade, and remained there until 1970. For the next two years, Sister assumed the role of principal at St. Katherine’s Day School.

Today, Sister serves as a house driver for the Sisters of Mercy, which involves taking senior sisters to doctor’s appointments and on other trips as needed.

In 1971, Sr. Catherine made her way to Waldron Academy for Boys as vice principal, until 1984. Coordinating the seminarians from St. Charles Borromeo for their service experiences was a job Sister handled at Waldron. She also initiated the Student Service Club, in which the students would visit St. John’s Hospice and

Several Waldron alums have gone on to pursue dreams that place them in front of the camera. We are so excited to learn that many of them credit their early years at WMA with cultivating their interest in the media.

Andrew Doud ’99 According to Andrew Doud, “The first time I ever thought that a career in television would be fun was during the Blizzard of '93 and Waldron was closed. I was watching 6 ABC and I remember thinking how cool it was that reporters got to work in the snow!”

Andrew began his new career at Fox Sports 1 in Charlotte, N.C., in February, as a reporter for NASCAR “Race Hub,” a NASCAR news and information show. This season Andrew will also be working on another show on FS1, “NASCAR Race Day,” which is the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series prerace show. After graduating from Waldron, Andrew went to Holy Ghost Prep and later earned a BA in broadcast journalism from Elon University.

“Turns out hours of live shots in winter weather are not as fun as my nine-year-old self originally thought back in 1993. But the passion progressed in college and here I am!,” he says.

Ashley Johnson ’99 Ashley has been a general assignment reporter with FOX 26 in Houston for close to a year. Before moving to the Lone Star State, she reported for two years at home in Philadelphia with PHL 17 where she worked on the morning show, “Eye Opener,” even doing a report at Waldron about how to avoid the flu. Ashley’s first onair job was in Burlington, Vt. Ashley got her first taste for the news business with the Emma Bowen Foundation, which was a six-week summer paid internship.

A graduate of Episcopal Academy and the University of Pennsylvania, Ashley majored in both political science and communications.

“I credit becoming a broadcast journalist to my third grade teacher, Sister Barbara MacWilliams,” Ashley says. “She told my mom that I spoke well and presented well, so Sister’s insight always stuck with me.”

“This has been my dream for as long as I can remember. In third Grade at Waldron, I was voted ‘Most Curious’ and it was true!

I have always loved asking questions and wanted to know more about everything,” says Kelly. “As my education at Waldron progressed, I became more and more interested in writing, and I credit my amazing teachers with helping me develop great writing skills that I use every single day. My first big break was writing a sports column for Waldron's weekly newsletter in seventh grade.”

Kelly is a graduate of Merion Mercy and earned her degree in communication and media studies from Fordham.

These days, Kelly is an associate producer for “Good Morning America.”

“Each day is so incredibly different, and that's what I love most about my job,” she says.

Monica Tassoni Cryan ’02 Monica is currently an onair meteorologist for NBC in Connecticut. Before that, she worked as a meteorologist and occasional reporter in Texas and Alabama.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I was interested in the news and media. However, I loved math and science much more than reading and writing. I found a way to combine my strengths and interests after taking an environmental science class at Merion and realizing my passion for the atmosphere,” says Monica.

A graduate of Merion Mercy, Monica interned at Fox 29 News in Philadelphia and earned a B.S in meteorology, forecasting and communications from Penn State University.

Since then she has worn many hats at various news stations. Monica is quick to say, “The industry is fastpaced and has tough, long hours but I love how fulfilled I feel at the end of the day.”

Perry Russom ’05 The past few months have been a rush for Perry as he’s covered major news story after major news story for WPRI-TV in Providence, R.I. “There were times when I would wake up from a nap and didn't know what day it was!” he jokes. “One of my reports was on ‘CBS This Morning,’ my network debut at the age of 23.”

Perry credits Waldron and St. Joe’s Prep for where he is today. At an early age, he saw how cruel life would be when visiting the soup kitchens in Philadelphia, and he experienced the fragility of life when talking with nuns at McAuley Convent whose years were numbered, which he thinks allowed him to mature quicker. Perry attended Syracuse University where he double majored in broadcast journalism and political science. He graduated magna cum laude from the Honors College and was named a Remembrance Scholar, a distinction 35 SU seniors receive in honor of the 35 Syracuse students who died in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing in 1988.

The rewarding part about this job according to Perry is talking to people in all walks of life. “You see all of the terrible and great things life has to offer, and it puts everything into perspective,” he says. “I've seen how destructive a few seconds could be where a fire takes away someone's home and they're left with nothing. It pushes me to work even harder to tell their story the best way I possibly can.”

Nick Centrella, a student at Boston College, was awarded an Atlantic Coast Conference International Academic Collaborative grant and has been designated as an ACCIAC Thesis Research Fellow. This award enabled Nick to access primary sources for his senior thesis, “Rifles & Rhetoric: Paramilitary Anti-Semitism in New Deal America”. Nick is writing his thesis about several right-wing paramilitary

organizations active during the Roosevelt Administration, some of which developed sophisticated terrorist plots against the United States government.

Nick traveled to Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Virginia to work in their rare manuscript archives. Their collections included limited print magazines published by Silver Legion leader William Dudley Pelley, as well as radio transcripts from Roman Catholic priest Charles Coughlin. Nick plans to use these documents along with various other sources to produce a detailed study of a relatively forgotten piece of American history. The project will be published through Boston College.

Andrew Stetser was named Main Line Student of the Week in the Main Line Times in December 2014. A member of the All-Catholic Chorus for four years, Andrew is involved with the Malvern Theatre Society and is active in Christian Service. He did his senior project last summer in Peru.

Andrew is vice president of the Diversity Awareness Club at Malvern. He will attend Ursinus College in the fall.

Ways to Give The Waldron Annual Fund Our annual campaign helps provide support for general operating expenses such as student and faculty programs, curriculum, technology, and building and grounds enhancement. The campaign runs from July 1 through June 30 of each year.

The United Way WMA is approved to receive donations through the United Way’s Giving Program. If you already use this as a way to give, please consider naming WMA as a recipient. Our designation is: Waldron Mercy Academy #14245.

Special Tax Incentives for PA Business Owners – Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Programs You can help WMA provide financial aid by participating in these special programs offered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Last year alone, Pennsylvania budgeted $100 million in EITC funds and $50 million in OSTC Funds for approved academic institutions. WMA is approved to receive both. If your company pays state tax in Pennsylvania, it may be possible to distribute the funds to WMA instead. Through the EITC and OSTC programs, your company can receive a substantial tax credit - as much as 90 percent of the value of the gift - while supporting Waldron Mercy Academy’s Student Aid Fund. The program allows C-Corps, SCorps, Partnerships, and LLCs to contribute. Over 50 of our students have benefited from these funds.
