THE CLIENT’S DIRECT AND SIMPLE GOALS In the summer of 2018, our clients came to Jones Pierce after purchasing Lot 32 in the Kennebec Development at Lake Martin, AL. The lot offered good access to Auburn University for the kids and the games. Their Goals: -
Make a place that their expanding tribe of Family and Friends could gather.
-
Accommodate different scales of entertaining, from just the family to a weekend where EVERYBODY invites a friend.
-
Finish the guest house first, so they had a place to stay during the construction of the Main house.
-
Go fast! The cheerleading competitions were starting in September, 2 months later!

DESIGN INSPIRATION 1.
Asymmetrical entry using a large timber bracket.
2.
A visual idea of driving up to the house from the side.
3.
The clients wanted a wrap around porch from the parking court to the back porch areas.
4.
The idea of the look and feel of a beefy wood exterior was communicated with this sketch.
5.
The bunk room was a BIG deal with 5 children and friends. The clients like the idea of a heavy material and interesting openings to terrace level.

EIGHT ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF KENNEBEC DESIGN 1 to 1 1/2 story masses that hug the landscape Collection of building masses connected to great courtyards and outdoor spaces Lower-pitched roofs that reinforce horizontality. Outdoor living spaces that seamlessly connect to indoor rooms Native materials with a neutral color palette Large expanses of glass at prominent spaces of the home. Lakeside porches and balconies to great views Exposed structural details on interior and exterior (brackets, beams, etc.)
LAKE MARTIN, KENNEBEC When it is fully built out, Kennebec will be one of the best places to invest in a home for a long-term hold on Lake Martin. As Lake Martin develops, the homes in Kennebec will have the potential to appreciate faster than other developments that were less well-considered. Beyond the investment, the quality of life derived from being in Kennebec will pay itself back with every visit to the lake.

PORTAL TO LAKE LIFE Driving from an Auburn game or escaping from Atlanta offers a side view of the primary home and the garage guest house. The house is positioned for privacy from adjacent homes and provides a family compound feeling. The origami roof is used to create a 1.5 story look that is required by Kennebec.

THE PORCH The porch continues to wrap around the house to the large living room doors that face out to the lake. The view is framed by hanging beds. This is the “Big Water” elevation, which calls for large windows on the upper and lower level living areas.

FRONT ENTRY The front entry is asymmetrical and works with the adjacent stair tower element. Kennebec dictates that homes should use natural materials including wood roofs, stone and wood siding.

DIFFERENCE IN SCALE Then the scale explodes to the Family Hall from the portico with the six foot fireplace and chimney anchored to the interior and exterior of the house.

ENTRY LEVEL The front door is less formal on a lake house. In this case, it is part of a gang of doors that provides transparency to the lake as guests enter the house. The house design is organized around the Family Hall. The hall becomes more cozy with the use of furnishings, mezzanines and alcoves

KITCHEN The cook wall is located on the back of the fireplace using the same stone as a backsplash. The outdoor pass through bar aligns with the cook wall and island. Pecki Cyprus cabinets provide a rusticated cabinet look.

LARGE STORAGE PANTRY With an open kitchen, it is ideal to have a place for loading and unloading guest-provided provisions. Every open kitchen needs large pantry with lots of space for stuff.

DINING / LAKE CONNECTION The adjacent dining area is located between the kitchen and outdoor porch. Two sets of folding doors open the corner to bring in the view and outdoor life. The upper porch is adjacent to the dining area and bar. It showcases a timber roof, wood burning fireplace and corner views that are all about the water.

PRIMARY SPACE The primary suite located on the main level has direct access to the rear porch with stunning views of the lake and a perfect spot for watching the stars. The functional bathroom equipped with a steam shower is a great (and private) relaxation spot for the couple.

GUEST SPACES The client used some great tactics for “Hosting of the Masses”: There is a laundry on all three floors so linens do not migrate and guests have an option to help close down for the weekend. A “No Assigned Bedroom” policy keeps kids from claiming bedrooms, encouraging everyone to pack it in and pack it out for maximum flexibility.

CAMP KENNEBEC A proper lake house must have a camp-style bunk room. This lake house uses “trim carpenter created” timber frames for twin over queen sized beds with capacity for twelve campers. The room is adjacent to a “camp-style” bath. The trough sink is open to the bunk room. The shower allows people to take clothes in the shower to change. The toilet is in its own room.

THE GUEST HOUSE The Guest House is as an attached living space behind the garage to camp out in while the main house was being built. The Guest House is a self-sufficient space with a kitchen, private bedroom and a bunk room to segregate a greek chapter or guest with smaller kids that want to be separated from the house.

THE HIGH DIVE The dock was designed with similar details as the house with a wood roof and decorative cut on the rake and rafters. A pull down stair provides access to the upper jumping platform.
