TOP 10 ADVENTURES IN SUNSET COUNTRY
hunt you just don’t get around home. The animals up here also grow bigger than in many other areas due to our colder climate and rich seasonal food sources upon which they feed.
When you have an area that is 60,000 square miles with over 70,000 lakes, it is easy to come up with a top 10 adventures list—well maybe not, with so many amazing things to choose from!
Try going after a black bear that weighs 500 pounds, a 12-point whitetail buck or an adult bull moose and you’ll understand exactly what we’re saying. Along with game birds, waterfowl and even timber wolves, we offer a uniquely Canadian hunting experience we know you’ll enjoy!
Fishing reins supreme so it is number one. Our multi-species waters and our many remote, fly-in only lakes makes a visit here the trip of a lifetime. Your chance at landing that “fish of a lifetime” is better than average in Sunset Country.
Today, hunters of all ages have discovered the excitement of the chase and the exhilarating feeling when the animal first shows up and walks into their stand or responds to their call.
Combined with things like world-class flatwater paddling, houseboating, hunting, and camping, few places rival us for the quality of the outdoor experience we offer. The best part is these adventures are available year-round!
Once you get over the initial excitement and anxiety that first sighting creates, then it’s time to get down to business and wait for your best shot. Our lodges offer guided or unguided hunting packages. You can bring your rifle, shotgun or bow.
THINGS TO DO IN SUNSET COUNTRY Photo: La Place Rendez-Vous Hotel 6 | 2023 Sunset Country Guide
#1: FISHING
More people visit Sunset Country for freshwater fishing than any other part of Canada. There are several reasons for this, but size and selection would be the primary ones. Catch a multitude of species like bass, walleye, pike, lake trout, brook trout, muskie, crappie, perch and more.
#2: FLY-IN TRIPS
Imagine what it would be like to have a Canadian freshwater lake all to yourself? That is what you get when you fly in to a remote outpost cabin. In addition to outposts there are also 5-star fly-in lodges and remote, boatin lodges where you get the remote experience and are treated royally at the same time.
#3: PADDLING
It doesn’t matter if you prefer a canoe, a kayak or an SUP, the sheer vastness of the land up here and the thousands of inter-connected lakes makes for some of the continent’s best flatwater paddling routes. You can do the serious canoe trip or simply haul your kayak or SUP along with you, put it into any lake and start paddling. See page 17 for a list of canoe & kayak outfitters.

#4: RENT A CABIN
Most people renting a cabin are here to fish but that doesn’t mean that is all there is to do. When it comes to cabin rentals we offer several access options from drive-in, boat-in to fly-in. Bring your family and friends and hang out by the lake, have a drink on the dock, and relax.
#5: CAMPING
We cover all the bases when it comes to camping. Whether you own a big RV, a small camper, or you like traditional tent camping, there are many private campgrounds and Provincial Parks scattered across our vast region.
#6: HUNTING
Big game, small game, or birds and ducks, there are many hunting opportunities available in Ontario’s Sunset Country. Bear hunting is popular both in the spring and fall but as the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, your chance at a trophy deer or moose begins.

#7: HOUSEBOAT VACATIONS
In Sunset Country, you have the option of exploring Lac Seul and Lake of the Woods on a houseboat. There’s nothing quite like this experience and having a cabin that floats and can move around on a massive lake lets you enjoy our region’s great fishing, recreational activities, and scenery in a completely different way.
#9: WILDLIFE VIEWING
One of the bonuses of visiting Sunset Country is the opportunity to see many different species of birds and wildlife. Who knows, you may get lucky and see a bull moose, a lynx, or many other species that call the Boreal forest home.
#8: EVENTS/ ATTRACTIONS
Throughout Sunset Country you will discover many festivals, events, and attractions— especially in the summer months. From fishing tournaments to farmers’ markets, we have them all! Visit one of the attractions in the area: beaches, museums, scenic lookouts and more.
#10: WINTER ADVENTURES
The fun doesn’t stop once the snow arrives, in fact it opens up a whole new world of adventures, including snowmobiling, ice fishing, skiing, even dog sledding! Visit Sunset Country and experience winter like never before—you won’t regret it!

FISHING IN SUNSET COUNTRY
Whether you have fished all your life or you are new at it, Sunset Country is unrivalled as a destination for anglers. Our advantages are 70,000 freshwater lakes and rivers and a location in the heart of the Boreal forest and Canadian Shield.
This is the place where you can easily catch enough walleye for a shore lunch cooked over an open fire on an island. There is really nothing quite like it when the fish goes from the lake to the frying pan in the span of an hour.
We’re a trophy destination as well. Every cast you make presents the opportunity to reel in the “fish of a lifetime.” Some of North America’s biggest freshwater fish swim in our lakes including trophy muskie, walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout. All we ask is that you release these big fish back to be caught another day.
In Sunset Country, you can fly, drive or boat-in to your cabin. Our member outfitters are the best at what they do and have been serving up memorable vacations to anglers for over eight decades!
FISHING

CATCH MANY DIFFERENT SPECIES IN A SINGLE DAY
One of the greatest things about fishing in Ontario’s Sunset Country is the variety of fish! Nowhere else can you find as many lakes with so many species. Fish for walleye and panfish in the morning for your shore lunch, try for a trophy pike, muskie or trout in the afternoon, and feisty bass in the evening or just fish for walleye all day long, the choice is yours!
WALLEYE
Walleye are why most people come here to fish, and for good reason. They are the ultimate table fare and our thousands of lakes are loaded with them! These fish have a beautiful gold colour and in some lakes, even a green or blue tint. Jigging with live bait in 20 to 30 feet of water is the most reliable method of catching walleye but they also bite a wide variety of artificial baits.
ONTARIO WALLEYE RECORD:
Weight: 22.25lbs | Length: 36.5in | Girth: 21.0in
Caught by Patrick Noon on May 26, 1943
BASS
Sunset Country waters harbour both small and largemouth bass but smallies are much more common. Pound for pound, our bass are the best fighters in the lake so look for a wild and fun retrieve when you hook into one. You can catch bass using spinner baits, plugs, raps or plastic. Try a tube jig if the fish get finicky. The biggest smallies go up to 7 pounds with big largemouth slightly larger.
ONTARIO SMALLMOUTH BASS RECORD:
Weight: 9.84lbs | Length: 24in | Girth: 18.3in
Caught by Andy Anderson on September 26, 1954
TROUT
The vast Canadian Shield landscape is dotted with thousands of clear, deep trout lakes which offer some of this continent’s most consistent lake trout fishing. If you’re up here shortly after ice out then spin cast for lakers in 10 feet of water. Most of the time, these fish are deeper though so down rigging or drop-shotting are two methods that work well. Our northern rivers also have native brook trout.
ONTARIO LAKE TROUT RECORD:
Weight: 63.12lbs | Length: 51.5in | Girth: 32.8in
Caught by Hubert Hammers on May 25, 1952
PIKE
Big and nasty is one way of describing northern pike and they certainly have earned this reputation. The top predator in many lakes, the northern pike up here can exceed 45 inches and 30 pounds. Just about anything works with northerns but many anglers love to throw big jerk baits or spoons onto rock piles, sunken timber or along the weed lines. If you get a big one to hit, you better hope you have a good leader on!
ONTARIO NORTHERN PIKE RECORD:
Weight: 42.12lbs
Caught by Harry Bell on July 14, 1946
MUSKIE
If you’re a dedicated muskie hunter, you already know Sunset Country is the promised land of muskie fishing. We have these amazing predators not only in big numbers but of the “supersized” variety. In some lakes, you’ll be hard pressed to catch fish smaller than 45 inches and if it’s your day to shine, there are monsters over 50 inches that await your cast. There's nothing quite like catching a giant muskie in Sunset Country.
ONTARIO MUSKIE RECORD:
Weight: 65lbs | Length: 58in | Girth: 30.5in
Caught by Kenneth O'Brien on October 16, 1988
CRAPPIE & PERCH
While we are not generally known for our panfish, when it comes to crappie and perch fishing, we can compete with the best destinations out there. Our black crappie can slab out at 3 pounds and they taste delicious! Try jigging for them in the spring or fall or repeat the attempt through the ice. Once you find them you’re going to catch a bundle! Perch are everywhere and are very easy to catch!
ONTARIO CRAPPIE RECORD:
Weight: 3.78lbs | Length: 17in | Girth: 16.5in
Caught by Charles Sherrill on May 10, 1986

TRUE CANADIAN EXPERIENCE
Wake up at sunrise, head down to the dock and gather your gear for a day of fishing. After enjoying a few hours on the water catching your lunch for the day, pull up on Sunset Country’s ruggedly beautiful shoreline for the ultimate shore lunch experience.
Shore lunch isn’t just delicious, it is a valued tradition here in Ontario’s northwest. Some of your most memorable moments will be spent around an open fire along the rugged shore.
You’ll barrel over with laughter retelling the stories of that morning, possibly of someone’s stick-fish they thought was the ‘big one’. The freshly fried fish will give you the fuel you need for the day on the water and the time spent around the fire with friends will feed your soul.
SHORE LUNCH IN SUNSET COUNTRY
BY JEFF GUSTAFSON GUSSYOUTDOORS.COM
Shore lunch is an essential part of a trip for many anglers who visit Northwest Ontario each year. I started guiding on Lake of the Woods when I was 14 years old and while I had the fishing part figured out the first order of business for me before I took any guests out on my own was to tag along with some of the other guides to learn how to prepare and cook a shore lunch.
Through the years I have probably cooked over 500 shore lunches and I don’t think that I have ever left without over-eating! People love to eat fresh fish and it’s a nice way to break up a long day on the water.
SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER:
• Make sure that there are no bones in the fish!
• Make sure the oil is the right temperature. You can do a drop test and you should get some nice bubbles when the oil is hot enough.
• While it’s nice to pull a boat up on a beach, don’t cook on the beach because sand will get into everything!
When it comes to recipes for batter it’s almost hard to go wrong. I like to keep it simple with my favourite batter combination.
» Dip the fish in flour
» Coat with egg
» Cover in corn flake crumbs
» After the fish are cooked, sprinkle a little bit of lemon pepper over the fish and they are delicious.
*Other items to include in a good shore lunch are potatoes, canned beans and corn, some fresh vegetables and bread.
**It pays to make a list before you head out in the morning because you don’t want to forget anything like cooking oil, lard, utensils for cooking and eating, a garbage bag, ziplock bags, salt and pepper, etc.

LAKE LIFE
If there is one thing that defines your trip to Sunset Country, it will be the thousands of freshwater lakes that we offer. Some are large, some are small and there are literally more lakes than people. Set in the rugged Boreal forests of the Canadian Shield, these lakes provide endless opportunities to escape, play, fish, or do just about anything you want to do. The number of wilderness beaches you’ll see on many lakes will astound you! Stop at one and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you.
Better yet, on a hot day you can go for a swim, go paddling, or for a boat ride. Out on the lake you’ll see an abundance of loons and if you’re lucky, you’ll hear their call—a sound that defines Canada’s wilderness. You have the option to reserve a lake all to yourself with a trip to a remote fly-in outpost where the only cabin on the entire lake is the one you and your friends or family are staying in. There’s really nothing quite like it! For those who don’t want to fly, we recommend a houseboat vacation, it’s one of the best ways to explore the lake.
EXPLORE OUR WATERWAYS
14 | 2023 Sunset Country Guide
Photo: Lac Seul Wilderness Resort
Pictographs are rock paintings made by using red ochre and date back thousands of years. They can be seen as you explore the lakes. Many are found in Quetico Park and on Lake of the Woods, but can also be found on other lakes such as Dryberry, Lower Manitou Narrows, Wabaskang, Eagle, White Otter as well as in Wabakimi and Woodland Caribou Parks.
FISHING
Nowhere else will you find the diverse shoreline, shoals, and rocky points that make up most of our lakes. Consequently, that diversity extends to the type of fish we have to offer. On many lakes you can catch 3, 4, 5 or even 7 species of fish in one day. The sheer number of fish and the quality of our fisheries keep anglers returning year after year. Catch that trophy you’ve been dreaming about!
WATERSPORTS
Whether you are an adrenaline junkie and enjoy wake boarding or like the serenity of kayaking, Sunset Country has all sorts of watersports to keep you busy. Rent a SUP and paddle around the lake for a few hours. Many lodges will often have canoes or kayaks on-site for you to use or book a canoe outfitter who can outfit you for a longer trip into a wilderness park.
BOATING
By cruising our waterways, whether it be by motorboat, houseboat or sailboat, you get the opportunity to experience many things you don’t see on land. Head to a secluded beach where you may be the only visitors, drive by a waterfall that can only be reached by boat, or stop by historical markers made by early explorers. The bonus: none of our lakes are crowded!

FLATWATER PADDLING
When you have 70,000 lakes and rivers and a wilderness land area exceeding 100,000 square kilometres, the opportunities for paddlers are endless. With three huge wilderness Provincial Parks you get to paddle on a grand scale that few, if any other regions on the continent can match. Wabakimi Provincial Park alone is 2.3 million acres in size with over 2,000 kilometres of canoe routes inside the park. There are around 700 visitors that trek into this vast wilderness region each year.
Woodland Caribou Provincial Park west of Red Lake, Ontario covers an area of 1.2 million acres and endless routes for paddling enthusiasts. Controlled entry means few visitors and an abundance of nature. There are some great campsites along all the routes in the park.
Last but not least is world-famous Quetico Provincial Park on the Canada/US border. There are hundreds of miles of canoe routes, great camping and no motorized boats. The fishing in the park is off the charts! There are many other places to take your canoe, kayak or stand-up paddle board. In 2023, make Sunset Country your paddling destination!

WILDERNESS HUNTING HUNTING TRIP CHECKLIST
If you’ve never hunted in Ontario’s Sunset Country and you’ve now booked your trip, then here’s a checklist of things to remember and plan for to ensure you’ll have a great time:
ITEM #1 – REGISTERING YOUR FIREARM

This involves paying a registration fee and filling out the Canadian Firearms Declaration Form. Please fill out the form beforehand.
ITEM #2 – AMMUNITION
You are allowed to bring up to 200 rounds of ammunition into Ontario with you. Ammunition should be stored separately and locked up. It cannot be stored in the same locked container as the firearms.
ITEM #3 – TRANSPORTING FIREARMS
Your firearms must be properly encased and a secure locking device (such as a trigger lock or cable lock) must be attached so the firearms cannot be fired.
ITEM #4 – PROHIBITED WEAPONS
Never bring a prohibited weapon such as a handgun, modified rifle or automatic weapon into Canada.
ITEM #5 – GET ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS
For more information on importing your firearms into Canada, you can contact the Canadian Firearms Centre at 1-800-731-4000 or (506) 624-5380. You can download the firearm registration form at rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/firearms.

2022 YEAR IN REVIEW!
What’s new in Sunset Country? It has been one heck of a year and a lot has happened! If you didn’t get a chance to visit in 2022, here’s a recap of some of the more notable events.
2022 started out ‘hot!’ The weather in January was above normal in many areas throughout Sunset Country. Dryden averaged 6.8°C warmer than usual and recorded its second warmest January on record.
The twinning of the Trans Canada Highway from the Manitoba/Ontario border to Kenora also began in the new year. It will take a few years to complete, but it will be nice to have the highway divided along that stretch.
Already struggling with floodwaters, the Morson/Nestor Falls area was hit with two back-to-back storms that destroyed hundreds of trees and left widespread destruction in the region. Black Island Resort took a direct hit, as did Caliper Lake Provincial Park—resulting in the cancellation of the Moose ’n Fiddle Festival. In true northerner style, the park and area lodges worked together to get things restored quickly.
The Beyak Automotive Splash Park, a 2,800 sq ft park at the Rotary Complex in Dryden, opened in August and is a wonderful, accessible and inclusive play space.
October 1 marked the opening of the Canadian/United States land border with no restrictions! This was a welcomed announcement that many lodges and US residents had been waiting to hear.
While we had a pretty extreme year in 2022, we are tough northerners and continue to persevere. The floodwaters have come back down to normal, we’ve enjoyed many amazing night skies filled with beautiful northern lights, and we’ve had phenomenal fishing all year. We hope to see you in 2023!
HISTORIC FLOODING
With above average snowfall and Spring rains, flooding was a major problem in many areas this summer. May rainfall in Kenora is usually 88mm, but May 2022 saw 196mm of rain!
Localized flooding caused many roads and highways throughout the region to flood. In early May, we saw major highways like Highway 105, the Trans-Canada and Highway 599 close due to flooding.
Rainy Lake was the first major lake to flood, beating the second highest water level which was recorded in 2014. It just came shy of beating the all time high water in 1950.
The floods waters slowly came north, wrecking havoc on Lake of the Woods, the Winnipeg River system and many of their tributaries. In mid-May a boathouse detached from land and was seen floating on Lake of the Woods! Many other lakes and towns were flooded as well.
HUSKY THE MUSKIE
In June, Kenora’s iconic Husky the Muskie mascot was restored for the third time since it was originally built in 1967. It has been lightened a bit to help it stand out from the trees in McLeod Park.
SUPERB FISHING
The bright side of the flooding? The fishing was phenomenal this year. Some species like bass and pike were not in their usual hangouts, especially early in the season and anglers had to search for them. The walleye were biting though and they were HUGE, the muskie and lake trout fishing were also phenomenal in 2022!
THE NORSEMAN
While technically it was put back in its rightful spot in late 2021, Red Lake’s CF-DRD Norseman was perched in it’s glory for the 2022 Norseman Festival in July. It was being repaired for the last few years as it had major hail damage in 2017.
RENOVATIONS
If you were fortunate enough to visit Sunset Country last year, you will have noticed that many of the lodges and businesses in the area have made many renovations and upgrades to their establishments in their downtime over the last couple of years. Come see the renos for yourself!

WINTER
ICE FISHING
Once the water hardens into ice, the fishing really heats up here in Ontario’s Sunset Country! This includes some of the world’s best ice fishing opportunities for lake trout, walleye, pike and panfish. During winter, the fish movements are somewhat more predictable so finding a good hole is relatively easy to do. Once you are on top of the fish, the action can be fast and furious and you’ll find no time to worry about the cold since you’ll be spending most of your time trying to catch the fish!
Several of our outfitters as well as some independent ice fishing guides are available to help you find the best spots and at the same time, offer the accommodations that you’ll need after a day out on the ice.
Relax in a lodge or hotel hot tub, go to the restaurant and dine on some great tasting food or go to the bar and enjoy a few drinks with your friends. A great ice fishing trip awaits you in Sunset Country at any time between January and the end of March. Just so you know, the fish taste even better in the fry pan when they come out of the ice cold water!
SNOWMOBILING
With giant wilderness spaces, Ontario’s Sunset Country is a snowmobiler’s paradise. The region’s trails are maintained by volunteer snowmobile clubs of the OFSC – District 17 so there are many kilometers of groomed trails to ride on. Up here there’s almost no traffic so the riding experience is superior! The trails give riders a safe and quality path that you can ride in comfort for hours.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Several of the towns and cities in Sunset Country offer groomed ski trails for the novice or avid cross-country skier. Make a weekend trip of it and visit Red Lake, Kenora, Fort Frances, Atikokan or Dryden or any of the other small towns with groomed trail systems and discover just how great our skiing and hospitality are!
DOWNHILL SKIING & SNOWBOARDING
While Sunset Country isn’t known as a downhill ski destination, we do have some exceptional hills that will entertain you with hours of fun over a weekend during the winter months. Mount Evergreen Ski Hill in Kenora is a good place for skiing, snowboarding or sledding and there are also great ski hills in Dryden, Atikokan and Thunder Bay.

SEASONS
SPRING
As the days get longer and the temperatures rise, the snow and ice melt to reveal the ground not seen for four or five months. Signs of life pop up everywhere: green grass starts to peek out, the trees start to bud and the wildlife are starting to give birth. There’s nothing quite like seeing a newborn fawn starting to walk on its wobbly legs. If there’s still ice on the lakes, it can be quite a pleasant time to go ice fishing with the hot Spring sun beating down on your face. Ice-out trout fishing is some of the best you’ll ever experience!
FALL
Fall is a wonderful time to visit Sunset Country. The leaves are turning and make for spectacular views. Put on a sweater and head out for a hike or a paddle on the lake. Sitting around a campfire in the fall cool air can be exhilarating. The bugs are gone and as the temperature drops, the fish become more active and ready to feed.
Crappie, bass, walleye and muskie fishing are fantastic. During Fall, bear hunting starts mid-August and then hunters enjoy moose, grouse and whitetail deer hunting in the following months.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
While weather can fluctuate and the temperatures throughout the region vary, we've put together a general guide to help you prepare for your vacation to Ontario’s Sunset Country.
SUMMER
If you’re planning a family vacation with lots of water sports action, swimming and relaxing on the beach, summer is for you. The lakes warm up and people start to swim mid June. The fishing is still great all summer, although the fish may be found in different spots than in the spring or fall. Warm, sunny days fill most of the summer and it’s a great time to get outside and experience all Sunset Country has to offer. Go fishing, kayaking, camping, houseboating, paddle boarding or just sit on the dock and watch the sun set. Many of the biggest events happen from May-September.
WINTER
The ground is usually covered in snow by late November or early December depending on the year and how far north you are. Once the lakes freeze solid, the snowmobilers and ice anglers come out to play. Trout fishing season opens January 1st which kicks off the ice fishing season. January/ February are typically the coldest months. We don’t hibernate in the winter though. Between ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing over frozen lakes, downhill skiing, snowboarding, and sliding there’s not much time for indoors!

DINING & SHOPPING
LOCALLY MADE
There are a number of locallymade products in Sunset Country you may want to bring home with you. These include a tasty delicacy like wild rice, many locally-grown vegetables available at our Farmers' Markets and dress wear such as moccasins, mitts and many others. Egli’s Sheep Farm in Minnitaki and Moose Creek Trading Company on the corner of highways 105/17 are must-stops for locally-produced goods. These products are not available anywhere else other than in Sunset Country so if you want something truly unique, this is it!
FRESH WALLEYE
One of the biggest treats for visitors from outside the region is the opportunity to taste fresh walleye caught from one of our many thousands of lakes. While the traditional shore lunch is the ultimate experience, many of our local restaurants and lodges also offer freshly caught walleye as part of their menus. The freshness and sweet taste of this delicate fish is something you won’t believe until you actually taste it. Mouth-watering doesn’t adequately describe it!
GIFT SHOPS
There are many one-of-a-kind gift shops scattered across the many small towns in Sunset Country. Here, you can search for that all important souvenir to take back home with you. The selection is truly amazing and if you've never visited one of these gift shops, then it’s something you definitely should experience. In addition to traditional gift shops, there are many other retail shops that also have products you may be interested in purchasing. So take some time to shop, you won’t be disappointed!
CRAFT BEER
The rise in the demand (and thirst) by consumers for everything craft beer has not been over-looked in Sunset Country. We have three locations currently producing locally-made craft beer. The Lake of the Woods Brewing Company in Kenora, Quetico Brewing Company in Atikokan, and Sleeping Giant Brewery in Thunder Bay will all quench your thirst with their amazing selections of craft beer. Be sure to visit them while you’re in the region—you won’t be disappointed!

PLANNING YOUR TRIP
TRAVEL TO SUNSET COUNTRY
CANADA/US BORDER
There are currently no COVID-19 restrictions when crossing the Canada/US border
CURRENT REGULATIONS
At the time of publication there are no mandatory COVID-19 requirements within the Northwestern Health Unit (nwhu.on.ca) region. While we do not anticipate any changes to this, please visit covid-19.ontario.ca for up-to-date information.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DO I NEED A PASSPORT?

DO I NEED A FISHING LICENSE?
All non-residents of Canada need a current non-resident fishing license and a non-resident Outdoors card. Non-residents under 18 do not need a fishing license if fishing with a licensed family member. Canadian residents need a current resident fishing license and Outdoors Card. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN AMERICAN PLAN AND HOUSEKEEPING?
You’ll notice that many lodges often refer to American Plan or Housekeeping packages. In general, Housekeeping means a cabin rental with a full kitchen where you do your own cooking. American Plan is more inclusive and includes meals and often other services such as a guide service or shore lunch. Modified plans will often include dinner.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY FLY-IN?
In our area, most of the fly-in accommodations are either solitary outpost cabins on a remote lake or a full-service lodge that you fly into. There is no road access. Float planes are prevalent in our area and are often used to transport guests into fly-in outposts or lodges.
GETTING TO SUNSET COUNTRY
Sunset Country encompasses the northwest corner of the Province of Ontario, Canada and is directly north of the State of Minnesota. Beginning at the Manitoba border which is a short 1.5 hour drive from Winnipeg, MB, the travel region extends east to Thunder Bay and covers everything north of the Canada/US border.
By vehicle you are less than a day’s drive from the US Midwest or from the western provinces. If you fly into Thunder Bay or Winnipeg from anywhere in Canada or the U.S. in the morning, you can be out on the lake that evening. We’re closer than you think!
Once you’re in Sunset Country, please remember that all speed limits are posted in kilometres. Drive carefully along our paved roads and have your camera handy, you never know what kind of wildlife you may see along the road, but pull over out of harm’s way first.
