Greetings FROM THE BOARD

Welcome back to the ZZYC docks and to our beloved club! The Board of Directors has eagerly awaited the moment when we can, once again, open our doors wide to serve you. We are thrilled to have Bretton Salent continue as our Club Director for 2024, and to be joined on the island by his family.

In the off-season, Bretton, his staff, and the Board have continued to work on delivering a fun filled summer line-up with amped up Happy Hours, an unforgettable Dinner Dance, tennis lessons and Summer Fun theme weeks like LARP and Hollywood week. Come by the club on Monday mornings for complimentary coffee on the docks as we start each week soaking in the morning bliss. We encourage you to explore the full range of experiences we have to offer. Our programs and services are thoughtfully curated to cater to individuals of all ages.

With Bretton on board for the next three years, the Board’s focus has shifted towards revitalizing ZZYC and updating our club for the future. The Board has initiated a capital campaign to generate ideas, cost estimates, permits and renderings for what the club could soon become. We look forward to hearing from all members on ideas and changes they feel are necessary for the club. Please send your comments to chair@zzyc.ca. We are very excited about the opportunity to update the club, so watch out for more information as we go forward!

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our community, volunteers, employees, and the generous support of our donors and advertisers. Your unwavering support is truly appreciated.

Meet you at the docks!

Board of Directors, ZZYC

From boats to sunsets, from tennis to poker nights at the club, from saunas to sipping wine on the dock, Tico loved every minute of being at Lake of the Woods. It was Tico’s passion to share the experience of wine with everyone he encountered, especially wines from his birthplace – Chile’s Colchagua Valley. Last fall, Karen gathered Tico’s friends, family and coworkers at the winehouse and, in partnership with Ventisquero Wines, selected two fabulous wines to honour Tico and his legacy. If you close your eyes, you can hear Tico’s booming laugh – and now you can share a glass of Tico on your dock.

The first wine is the Gran Reserva Carménère from the Trinidad Vineyard in Chile's Maipo Valley - a wine for every day, a wine for sharing - notes of red cherry & plum with hints of dark chocolate & coffee. Delicious!

The second wine is the Especial, a red blend from Colchagua - everyone smiled - this wine is a perfect expression of the terroir of Colchagua Tico led us there by sharing with us the wines & stories of Colchagua - there was absolutely no mistaking the wine in the bottle. Especial is a bold wine with a tale to tell - deep ruby in colour, expressing black cherry, cassis, dark chocolate, anise & roasted hazelnut on the palate.

LAKE LIFE

2023 Dinner Dance

“ISLAND PARADISE” RE-CAP

The “Island Paradise” themed 2023 dinner dance was a soldout smash success and undeniably, an enchanting evening. Everyone dressed in vibrant colors, danced to lively music and soaked in the tropical atmosphere. Adding to the excitement were captivating Polynesian Dancing performances by Island Breeze, and our own Bretton Salent, as DJ, that kept the dance floor alive until 1am!

A highlight of the evening was honouring Ivy Namanka with the 2023 Ferguson Cup award. The Ferguson Cup recognizes outstanding individuals who have made an impactful contribution to our ZZYC community through volunteerism. This was a touching moment that underscored the spirit of generosity and selflessness that permeated the event.

Ivy is a deserving and dedicated member of the ZZYC community, and past ZZYC Commodore (2019, 2020, 2021). Ivy’s leadership was integral in keeping the club running throughout the pandemic. As Commodore, Ivy also accomplished the acquisition of a long-sought-after liquor licence for ZZYC. We have these foundations to thank for our much-loved ZZYC happy hours! Before her role as Commodore, Ivy served for many years on the Board of Directors as the Social Chair, organizing countless events, including dinner dances.

The live auction was electric as bids soared and hearts raced, all in support of our much loved Club. Much thanks to the evening’s auctioneer, Jim Ferguson. And of course, the auction was only made possible by the generosity and support of our prize sponsors:

Waste Not Want Not

THE UNREALIZED POTENTIAL OF WOOD ASH

As cozy nights by the fireplace come to an end, you might be wondering what to do with all that leftover ash. Before you sweep it away, consider this:fireplace ash is a treasure trove of potential! Yep, that’s right. That powdery residue can do wonders around the cottage, and it’s all about being creative and environmentally conscious. Let’s dive into some unique ways to put that ash to good use.

• Natural Fertilizer: Did you know that fireplace ash is packed with nutrients like potassium and calcium? Sprinkle a thin layer of ash around your planters or garden beds to give your plants a nutrient boost.

• Some plants that will love wood ash are: Strawberries, beans, onions and garlic, root vegetables, leafy greens, basil, sage, catmint and many other herbs.

• Just be sure to avoid using ash around acid-loving plants like rhubarb, potatoes, blueberries, raspberries, roses and rhododendrons.

• Pest Repellent: Keep pesky critters away by creating a barrier of ash around the perimeter of your garden or yard. The abrasive texture of ash can deter slugs, snails, moths, and many crawling insects. Or, sprinkle a small amount onto an ant hill to force them to relocate, without causing harm. It’s a clean alternative to chemical pest control methods.

• De-Icer: Say goodbye to slippery walkways and driveways! Scatter a bit of ash on icy surfaces to provide traction and melt away the ice. Just remember to use ash sparingly to avoid damaging nearby plants or surfaces.

• Odor Absorber: Got a funky smell lingering in your fridge or pantry? Place a small bowl of ash in the offending area to absorb odours naturally. It works like a charm without the need for chemical fragrances.

• Kitty Litter Booster: Add larger chunks of ash to the litter box to help with moisture and odour absorption, naturally.

• Skunky Situations: If your pet gets sprayed in a skunk encounter - time is of the essence! Apply a sprinkling of wood ash on the fur and rub it in, to absorb the odour-causing oil. Follow with a thorough bath and rinse.

• Compost Accelerator: Speed up the composting process by adding a sprinkling of ash to your compost pile. The alkaline properties of ash can help balance the pH levels, making better conditions for composting worms and breaking down organic matter more efficiently.

• Cleaning Agent: Mix ash with a bit of water to create a paste-like substance that works wonders as a natural cleaning agent. Use it to scrub pots and pans, shine silverware, clean grout, or glass surfaces - especially inside of your wood stove. It’s eco-friendly and budget-friendly!

• Dehumidifier: Wood ash is effective at removing humidity in damp places. Put some in an open container under the sink, in the bathroom, or around your basement. Swap it out regularly to continuously remove moisture from the air.

• Fire Extinguisher: Ironically, ash can be used to put out your next bonfire. Keep a bucket of ash fireside to help out the fire at the end of the night.

Keep in mind - all of these tips are for wood ash from clean, natural wood. Not chemically treated, such as stained, painted, or pressure treated lumber. And of course, all ash should be completely cooled before using.

So, before you toss that ash, think about the endless possibilities it holds for enhancing life around the cottage. From fertilizing your garden to repelling pests, there’s no shortage of creative ways to use fireplace ash. Who knew it could be so versatile?

• 6 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 4 oz cream cheese, softened

• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan or shredded mozzarella cheese

• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley for garnish

• 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)

4. In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, crumbled bacon, cooked garlic and thyme mixture, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

5. Using a spoon, stuff each mushroom cap with the cream cheese mixture, pressing gently to fill the cavity and mound slightly on top.

6. Place the stuffed mushroom caps on the prepared baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.

7. Brush the tops of the stuffed mushrooms lightly with olive oil then top with grated Parmesan or shredded mozzarella cheese.

8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender and the filling is hot and bubbly.
