Pow wows are sacred ceremonial rites and we ask that you acknowledge and respect these activities by observing all instructions provided by the Master of Ceremonies.
Here are a few pow wow etiquette tips:
• Please stand and remove all hats/caps during all ceremonial songs and dances, including the Grand Entry, flag songs, veteran songs, honour songs, and any other designated songs.
• Always ask permission before taking any photos. There are songs/dances such as the Grand Entry where the MC will ask specifically that photos are not taken.
• Do not touch dancers’ regalia without permission.
Do not pick up any pieces of regalia or feathers you find on the ground. Please alert a dancer or a pow wow committee member.
• The sacred fire is an integral part of the pow wow gathering. Only sacred medicines are offered to the fire. Please follow the directions of the fire keeper for your offering.
• Do not bring drugs or alcohol to a pow wow and do not attend intoxicated.
• Dogs are not permitted around the pow wow area.
• Bring your own chairs and not sit on someone else's chair unless you ask permission. Tents with chairs are reserved for elders, dancers and drummers.

In early 2025, Erin Lockhart opened Songbird Baby & Kids to provide high-quality essentials for new parents, babies, and young children—something she saw missing in Kenora. With over 12 years in retail and a Graduate Certificate in Retail Management from Toronto Metropolitan University, Erin desires to make it easier for families to shop local, offering clothing, books, and baby care items that can be seen and tried on in person—no guessing on sizing or quality. For added convenience, parents can order online anytime and pick up in store.
The store is inspired by the outdoor lifestyle of Northwestern Ontario, stocking lifejackets, splash suits, and beachwear for local adventures. Many products feature prints of local flora and fauna, adding a regional touch. Songbird Baby & Kids offers clothing, outerwear, wooden toys, books, craft kits, and baby essentials—all with community and quality at the heart of everything it does.

Turtle Island Cloth & Craft Company is a dream realized for owner Claudine Longboat-White, a lifelong sewer and crafter who turned her passion into a community-centered business. When the opportunity to purchase Born to Quilt arose, it came at the perfect time—offering Claudine a new chapter and a chance to meet a creative need in Kenora. Alongside her throughout the journey has been her partner and co-owner, Randy White, whose steady support and encouragement have been essential in bringing the new business to life.
Claudine brings valuable knowledge to the shop, helping customers choose the right materials and offering guidance for all kinds of projects. The store is carefully curated with quilting cotton, Indigenous print fabrics, sewing notions, and regalia supplies.
More than just a retail space, Turtle Island Cloth & Craft Company is a cozy, welcoming environment designed to inspire. Its wide selection of materials and creative energy reflects Claudine’s vision and personal connection to the craft. As an Indigenous-owned business, Claudine proudly supports local First Nations and residents with supplies for powwow regalia and quilting traditions. The store offers fabric, notions, beading supplies, regalia components like jingles and conchos, as well as craft classes and a large meeting space—making it a true creative hub in the heart of Kenora.
After a couple decades on Main Street, The Hardwear Company, a beloved Kenora institution specializing in outdoor gear, has relocated to 834 River Drive. Owned by the business since 1998, the River Drive property was always part of a long-term vision to return to the water and make full use of its unique access to Laurensons Creek.
The new location offers onsite parking and boat access. These features make it easier for people to bring in bikes or skis for repair, and more convenient for those picking up a new kayak or canoe. Customers can even try out a kayak on the water before purchasing—something not possible at the previous location.
With the move, the store has adopted a more focused approach, concentrating on bikes, watersports, and skis. This streamlined inventory allows the staff to offer deeper product knowledge and better one-on-one service in a more relaxed, welcoming environment.
While some seasonal customers may still look for the shop on Main Street, The Hardwear Company remains easy to find and will surprise new visitors with its updated space and offerings.

For the new dynamic duo—Jenny Wheatley and Danielle Trudel—behind Kenora’s long standing Ho Joe Coffee & Eatery, it’s all about combining experience with passion. With Jenny as the brains and Dani (who prefers to let Jenny take the credit for the ideas!) as the brawn, they’ve brought a unique and welcoming approach to the cafe, offering everything from quick bites to refreshing beverages.
With over 25 years of experience in the service industry, including 15 years in management and service, Dani knows exactly what it takes to make customers feel at home. Jenny, with over 15 years in government work and now a consultant, brings a wealth of business acumen to the table. Together, they make a powerful team that blends creativity and know-how.
Ho Joe serves a much-needed community spot for locals and visitors to relax, enjoy a light breakfast or lunch, and sip on some delicious drinks. The menu features favourites like lattes, cappuccinos, milk tea boba, and the popular frozen hot chocolate. For those with a sweet tooth, fresh baked goods are always available. Looking ahead, both are excited for Kenora’s busy summer season, eager to meet new faces and connect with both locals and seasonal residents.
Tucked inside the Lake of the Woods Marina & Service Centre, The Waypoint offers a convenient, welcoming stop for boaters, locals, and tourists alike. With fresh food, cold drinks, and friendly service, it’s the perfect answer to the common post-lake question: Where should we eat?
Open year-round, The Waypoint serves breakfast, lunch, drinks, and treats like ice cream and bubble tea. The kitchen also supports private events and catering, while the marina’s shared space provides access to essentials—from beachwear and snacks to ECHO tools and local food products.
Connected to Green Adventures and Kraken Golf & Game Room, The Waypoint is part of a larger community hub offering kayak rentals, boat tours, and more. Inspired by the natural beauty of Lake of the Woods, its name reflects its purpose: a waypoint, a stop on the journey, a place to relax and recharge. Though the space is cozy, the energy is high. With a passionate team and a commitment to local partnerships, The Waypoint is proud to serve Kenora’s lake-loving community—with food, service, and spirit made from scratch.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Let’s flashback to some editorial pieces from the past.

Hidden gems that only a local could tell you about…there are exactly two ways to find out what the local residents enjoy doing around here; one is to sit down in a local coffee shop for a few hours and listen to the chatter… the other is to continue reading.
TEN - Rushing River Provincial Park
If you’re camping, be sure to spend a night or two… if you’re not, a day trip is a must. This fully-serviced park and campground offers canoe rentals, fishing, nature trails (cross-country ski trails in the winter) and a few beaches to laze around on. Pack a lunch and picnic by the rapids. Long weekends are the busiest so call ahead to reserve a spot.
NINE - Be a sport
Kenora has a strong sporting heritage that stems back to 1907 when the Kenora Thistles won the Stanley Cup. Winter or summer, Kenora offers some great sporting events. Baseball, hockey, golf, soccer, skiing, judo, karate… the list goes on. Get out and watch (or play) some of the local action, you may even get to see the next Michael Smith (our own Olympian Decathlete) in action.
EIGHT - Rent a kayak
There’s nothing better than paddling along a shoreline at sunset in a sea kayak. There are thousands of lake and steams in the area to explore. Strap a few kayaks on the SUV and get out there! A great local shop to rent a kayak is Waves Kayak Adventures. Paddle on.
SEVEN - Float Plane Tours
Local bush pilots get to see the splendor of Lake of the Woods and its 14,500 islands from the air every day. We think you should too. Book a half hour or one-hour tour with a local air service.
SIX - Go fishing for the day
One thing we love to do around here is getting out on the lake to go fishing, and since you’re in the area, we invite you to do the same. There are many different guide services that will take you out for the day (summer or winter) to catch your limit and maybe even cook you a shore lunch.

FIVE - Indigenous culture
If you want to do something really cool, we suggest taking in a First Nations Pow Wow. These cultural events happen a few times during the summer and usually offer some traditional Indigenous food such as bannock.
A long-time local tradition is getting out of town and into the northern wilderness. There are many great “hard-to-find” camping spots, canoe routes and snowmobile trails in the area. Contact the local MNR office for more info and maps. An alternative to getting out on your own is to stay at a lodge or fly-in fishing camp.
If you’re looking for a scenic hike you’ll want to visit the Vernon Trails. This five-kilometre loop system lies on the diverse vegetation zones of the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes Forest region, the Boreal Forest region and the Prairie Grasslands. The site offers spectacular lookout points and an open sheltered area at the parking lot. In the winter the trails offer some great cross-country skiing. The trails are located about six kilometres down the McKenzie Portage Road.
Lake of the Woods is full of local rock paintings, you just have to know where to look. These pictographs date back a number of centuries and depict stories of the ancient hunters. Be sure to bring your camera to capture a few shots of the local wildlife.
Nestled away on nearby Coney Island, this beach is one of the best in the area. With a huge park, playground, boardwalk, concession stand and covered picnic areas, we think this is a must to visit for the day. Shuttle service is available daily from the main docks on Kenora’s harbourfront.

Up the Creek with a Paddle

Imagine a unique and wonderful place in Canada where, if you stood on that land for the last 10,000 years or so, you would see first hand the ebb and flow of virtually all the amazing people and all the great stories that have shaped our country and who we are as a nation.
… there is no need to imagine it, this place exists! A place that has been literally and intimately shared by almost every person and every enterprise that has ever crossed this nation by land or by water in the last several thousand years. An exceptional vantage point from which you could literally reach out and touch all of these stores; almost the entire span of our history. That place is here at the north end of Lake of the Woods.
You cannot visit Kenora without sharing this Common Ground. The rocky ridge that holds back the lake; across which the Anishinaabeg and later the Voyageurs portaged; the Precambrian link that, in turn gives birth to the legendary Winnipeg River, has borne the rails of the “National Dream” of the Canadian Pacific Railway, carries the Trans-Canada Highway and today’s internet across its rocky spine is just such a uniquely shared place.
As you drive or walk this amazing junction of land and water located between Keewatin and downtown Kenora you might pause to consider the millions of other travelers, each with their own story who have shared this link from time immemorial. You might want to linger along the shoreline near the entrance to Cameron Bay. Yes, you will hear the bustle and noise of today’s economic corridor, but perhaps you might also hear the distant echo of the songs of the voyageurs who carried their trans-continental freight across the same spot for over a century. At this crossroads you would have been a first-hand witness to Canadian history, from the ancient Laurel people to LaVerendrye, to John A. MacDonald to the fibre optic cables; all within easy view.
The fact that such a marvellous economic and cultural crossroads of Canada even exists is quite amazing, but that is only the beginning of something even more remarkable. Large tracts of this astounding, historic intersection are to be dedicated to a splendid vision that does justice to the

uniqueness of this place. Under agreement between the Anishinaabeg in Treaty #3 and the City of Kenora, most of this land is to be set aside in perpetuity to honour the stories of this place; to celebrate the people who have come from the four directions and who have shared this crossroads. The common vision for this area is to honor our shared connection to the Earth and, through the Earth, our connection to each other. For an intersection that has seen as many collisions as meetings, it is fitting that it should now be dedicated to peace, harmony and respectful accommodation of differing ways.
Almost every traveler who has ever journeyed by land or water across Canada has been forced to cross this geographic feature - this shared crossroads. The stories of every traveler find a common link here on this Common Ground and in so doing, become a part of our larger story. Through the lesson of this remarkable piece of land and water, we discover that we are all part of our rich history. By listening to the stories of this place we begin to appreciate how we are all interrelated - how we are connected - connected in who we have been and connected in who we might become.
From this unique junction we gain an unparalleled perspective, one from which we begin to understand how we are all connected through our common reliance on the Earth on whose beautiful green back and blue waters we are all carried and on whom we must all depend in our life’s journey together.
Across time, from east, west, north and south, four directions meet here on this unique corner of Mother Earth - on our Common Ground.
The Common Ground Stewardship Group is composed of Grand Council Treaty #3, Ochiichagwe’babigo’ining Ojibway Nation, Wauzhuskh Onigum First Nation, Obashkwanda gaang First Nation and the City of Kenora. Approximately 400 acres of heritage lands and greenspace are earmarked for dedication to ‘Common Ground’.

The legacy of Kenora Stuff is a testament to the businesses who we represent. Here is a flashback to advertisements from the first 15 years. We take no assurances anything shown is still for sale, and as some owners, names and locations have changed, please don’t trust the contact information as fact.

Experience the enchanting beauty of Lake of the Woods aboard the legendary M.S. Kenora. Embark on a scenic cruise from Kenora's harbourfront, passing by Coney Island Beach and venturing south on a captivating circle route through the lake's northern section. The ship offers both heating and air-conditioning for comfort in any weather, along with on-board dining and licensed beverage service. Schedule your cruise and purchase tickets at mskenora.com, with walk-ons warmly welcomed.

It’s like riding a bike, but on the water! The safe and stable water bikes are a non-motorized, human-powered, bicycle-like watercraft that sits on two pontoons. Pedal-motion powers a propeller in the water moving the bike forward and backwards. Ideal for everyone over eight-years-old, rent the bikes on your own or in a group from Mosswood Adventures, located at Garrow Park throughout the summer. Lifejackets are included.

Gather up to ten companions for a personalized, guided tour of Lake of the Woods. Knowledgeable guides will lead you on an informative journey, sharing landmarks, stories, and local insights. Discover the lake's rich history and explore secluded beaches and bays along the way. To arrange your tour, contact Lake of the Woods Marina. Alternatively, enjoy a relaxing pontoon boat tour departing daily from Kenora's harbourfront docks June 30 through Labour Day Weekend; available from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Its expansive campground offers over 100 sites for trailers and tents, while the public beach features a protected swimming area and a wooden walkway spanning from shore to shore. Embracing its Ojibway translation of "gathering place," Anicinabe Park invites friends and family to gather and revel in the summer festivities.
Nestled along Park Street, Central Park has received a major facelift over the past two years, highlighted by a new jungle gym, rink, clubhouse and recreation area. The bustling playground features rubberized edging creating a safer play space for children.
Nestled in the Keewatin neighbourhood along Tenth Street, Beatty Park pays tribute to Keewatin's veterans with a cenotaph and honours Dr. W. J. Beatty, the area's first doctor. Visitors can relax at picnic tables while observing boat activities at the nearby government wharf and Two Bears Marina.

A suitable place for dogs to socialize and exercise, this completely fenced-in dog park offers two separated areas for play and leashfree running - one for puppies and small breeds and the other for large dogs. The 2.5-acre park includes walking paths, benches, agility props, and lighting for evening visits. A repurposed fire hydrant dispenses fresh City water to keep canines hydrated during their increased activity at the park. Located behind the baseball fields on Fifth Street South.
Located just north of downtown, Garrow Park is linked to the Rabbit Lake Trail System, featuring a paved accessible path along the water's edge. Beyond its scenic beauty, the park offers recreational amenities including pickleball courts, outdoor exercise equipment, and a 9-hole disc golf course. Additionally, the Kenora Rowing Club frequently hosts summer rowing competitions here.

Providing captivating views of Lake of the Woods, Norman Park offers more than just scenic beauty. Visitors can delight in the Kenora Rotary Splash Park, featuring playful waterthemed attractions accessible to all. The Douglas Family Art Centre is a place of creativity, featuring exhibitions, workshops, speaker series, drop-in crafts, tours, and art shop. One young guest recently expressed that he ‘wanted to live’ here because he loved it so much.
APRIL 2 - JULY 12
Kicking off the summer exhibition season is Keep Yourself Alive by Jim Oskineegish, a second-generation Woodland artist from Eabametoong First Nation (Fort Hope). Curated by Caitlyn Bird, Jim’s paintings fuse personal stories with Woodland, Surrealism, and Pop Art.
Jim is a Sixties Scoop survivor who endured abuse and trauma. In his My Hero Series, he portrays his childhood heroes including rock stars like Jimi Hendrix and Freddie Mercury and movie stars such as Bruce Lee and Chief Dan George. His portraits also pay homage to family and friends, like his late brother, Robert Kowalow. For Jim, these heroes have qualities of strength and bravery and provide comfort and inspiration for keeping yourself alive.

MAY 3 - SEPTEMBER 5
Solastalgia explores our connections with the natural world and what we experience when our home is altered or destroyed. Climate change, invasive species, pollution, human intervention - how do these forces impact where we live, our way of life and our identity? This blockbuster exhibition presents the artwork of some of Canada's leading contemporary artists: Christi Belcourt, Lori Blondeau, Gayle Church, Maureen Gruben, Isaac Murdoch, Meryl McMaster, Bettina Matzkuhn and Laura Peturson.

For those who enjoy the classics, W.J. Phillips: A Summer Reunion, is a special feature of Walter J. Phillips' Lake of the Woods watercolours and colour woodblock prints. For those who are familiar with Phillips, this show is not one to miss as we welcome home to Lake of the Woods, one of his most beloved paintings—a national treasure.
‘This place is time travel’ was how one young visitor described their experience at the Lake of the Woods Museum. It’s easy to see their point as history of the area is documented all the way back to its first explorers and settlers. And this story extends thousands of years further into the past with the First Nation Peoples’, the original inhabitants of this region.
A visit to the Lake of the Woods Museum instantly takes you back to these earlier times through photo displays, documents and artifacts. Along with the permanent gallery, this summer we will be offering guided tours of the Lake of the Woods Cemetery, a summer speaker series and two exhibits in our temporary gallery.

JUNE 16 - JULY 13
WEDNESDAYS, 7:30 P.M. (JULY & AUGUST).
With over 14,000 burials the Lake of the Woods Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in Northwestern Ontario. Join Lake of the Woods Museum Curator Rick Brignall to explore Kenora’s history through the lens of life and death. The tour is approximately 90 minutes.

An annual exhibit of the work of the area’s quilt guild members, including full-bed quilts, wall-hangers, clothing, table runners and more.
JULY 31 - SEPTEMBER 13
This exhibition is about the beginnings of the amalgamation process for the three towns of Kenora, Keewatin and Jaffray Melick into the City of Kenora. It tells the story of the barriers and issues they needed to face in their quickly changing relationship with the provincial government. It was definitely a wild ride from its early beginnings in 1996 until the clock struck midnight with a new city being born on January 1, 2000.
