GLAD YOU ARE HERE
Kenora is where summer dreams come to life. Whether you're here to soak up the sun on the pristine Lake of the Woods, explore the forest, or simply unwind amidst the breathtaking beauty of northwestern Ontario, we're thrilled to have you with us. From exhilarating water sports to tranquil hiking trails, Kenora offers endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation. So dive in, explore, and make unforgettable memories in our slice of paradise. Here's to an incredible summer ahead. Glad You Are Here!
In the spirit of reconciliation, the City of Kenora acknowledges that we are on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and Métis of Treaty #3. The City of Kenora was originally the land base of one collective First Nation community, which was separated into three communities now known as Wauzhushk Onigum, Niisaachewan, and Washagamis Bay First Nations. Kenora now sustains many others, all of whom have been welcomed to peacefully share and care for these ancestral Lands and Waters. To support stewardship of the land, the City recognizes the importance of a strong relationship with our Treaty #3 partners. The City of Kenora acknowledges that our economy greatly benefits from the Anishinaabe and Métis that live in and around the City.
The bustle of summer events is centralized downtown. The Harbourfront comes to life with special events week-in and week-out. The Jarnel Contracting Pavilion hosts northwestern Ontario’s largest farmers’ market every Wednesday from June 12 – October 2 which continues to grow and provide an excellent opportunity to get your fill of fresh produce, baking, farm-raised meats and locally-made crafts. Stop by and say hi—I will be joined by Council on July 10 and 31 handing out shopping bags and greeting market-goers. The Pavilion plays host to a variety of other events including Canada Day celebrations, Lakeside Live, Shake the Lake and Kenora Bass International.
As a child, I couldn’t wait for summer to arrive. I would head to Coney Island on the Argyle or MS Kenora. It was the perfect location to spend summer days. I even took swimming lessons there just like so many other kids at the time. Today, we have the opportunity to visit Coney Island by shuttle, and I encourage families to take advantage of it to create their own wonderful summer memories. Growing up here also meant that every Sunday, my family and I would venture out onto Lake of the Woods to explore beaches and islands and stop for a BBQ and a swim. This family time was the highlight of our week. These days, I try to get out on the lake with my family as often as I can to soak up the natural beauty. I hope you too will embrace all that Lake of the Woods and Kenora has to offer this summer.
I am excited to welcome you to our beaches, trails, attractions and most importantly our locally-owned businesses. The presence and activities of our visitors, seasonal residents and of course locals is important to the vibrancy of our community. Glad You Are Here!
— Mayor Andrew Poirier, City of Kenora

Kiefer Floreal is a rising star in the world of pottery, weaving narratives of nature and nostalgia into exquisite creations. Kiefer’s signature pieces masterfully blend the ancient Japanese art of Gyotaku with his pottery, immortalizing locally caught fish upon his creations. This unique fusion of tradition and innovation not only pays homage to his love for the outdoors but also seeks to animate and immortalize the bounty bestowed by the land.
This past winter Kiefer competed on CBC’s The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down, a reality TV series in search of Canada’s top potter. Kiefer was a finalist, competing until the end and ultimately finishing in the top three contestants.
how did you get started in pottery?
I started in high school when I moved out to Seattle. My sister took a ceramics course one semester and introduced me to the ceramics teacher. He really had an impact on me and I’ve been throwing pots ever since.
what is your favourite pottery piece to make?
That’s a tough one! I really enjoy making Gyotaku (fish printed) platters. But ever since the Great Canadian Pottery Throwdown, I’ve really enjoyed drawing and sculpting on pots.
how does lake of the woods influence your design work?
LOW influences me in so many ways, consciously and I’m sure subconsciously. I grew up fishing with my grandfather and my uncle in the summers and that definitely has had an effect on my work.
what was your favourite experience or memory from the great canadian pottery throwdown?
My favourite part had to be just meeting and spending time with my fellow contestants. We all truly care about each other.
when will farmers market visitors see you this summer?
I’m signed up for 3 Farmers market dates this summer in July and August, and I’ll try to do some online sales as well!

Sportfish of Lake of the Woods
BY BARRY CORBETT
Lake of the Woods covers 4,472 km2, providing a diversity of habitats to over 50 fish species ranging from tiny minnows to giant lake sturgeon. Here’s a sampler of the most important sport and commercial species swimming in the Lake.
WALLEYE
Sometimes called yellow pickerel, pike-perch or in French, doré, walleye is the most sought-after sport and commercial fish because of its mild flavour. The walleye shore lunch is the iconic image of Lake of the Woods. It derives its name from a special layer in the eye called the tapetum lucidum. Much like a cat’s eye, it reflects light allowing walleye to hunt in low light conditions at dusk or dawn but makes them adverse to bright daylight. Walleyes are top predators with an appetite for other fish especially young of the year perch or ciscos, but are not averse to gorging on mayflies during their hatch.
SAUGER
Sand pickerel or sand pike-perch are almost identical to walleye, a close cousin, but can be distinguished by two features. Walleyes have a white tip on their lower tail that saugers lack. Saugers have rows of black spots on their first dorsal fin whereas walleyes have a prominent black spot at the base of this fin. Diet is similar to walleye, but with a greater emphasis on aquatic invertebrates such as mayflies, crayfish, and leeches.
YELLOW PERCH
Although walleye, sauger, and yellow perch are members of the same family—percidae—perch lack their reflective eyes and are daytime feeders. One of Lake of the Woods most colourful fish, its compressed body has a simmering yellow to green hue, with five to nine olive green vertical bars and orange fins. Its scientific name, Perca flavesens means “perch becoming gold.” Perch feed on a variety of aquatic invertebrates including mayfly and dragonfly nymphs, midge larvae, crayfish and small fish.
37 Kenora Stuff 2024
NORTHERN PIKE
Nicknames include jack, northern, water wolf. The last comes from its scientific name lucius, which means wolf. Northern pike are admired by anglers for their large size and brute strength. Although its flesh is mild, white and flaky, it gets a bad rap as difficult to fillet because of pesky “y” bones. A quick search of the internet reveals easy techniques to overcome this and add a delicious fish to your menu. Pike are ambush predators, lurking amongst weeds or sunken logs, capturing their prey with explosive strikes. Adult pike will eat virtually anything that fits into their mouth, including fish, frogs, mice, muskrats, and ducklings.
MUSKELLUNGE
Musky, lunge, is also called the “ugly fish” by the Ojibway, possibly referring to its disposition and not looks. In Lake of the Woods, muskellunge is second only to sturgeon in size. So highly regarded by anglers, the City of Kenora erected a statue in its honour—“Husky the Musky”. Die-hard musky anglers are the last ones off the lake in the fall, braving the elements hoping to catch the “Big One”. Similar to pike, they often hold their fish sideways in their mouth before rotating, swallowing head first, ensuring the fish’s fins compress as they swallow.
LAKE TROUT
Laker or leaner refers to the variety of lake trout found in Lake of the woods. Its scientific name namaycush is derived from an Algonquin word. Lake trout require cold well oxygenated water to survive. As a result during the summer, they are restricted to the deep basins in Lake of the Woods (eg. Whitefish Bay, Clearwater Bay). However, in the winter they are free to roam the entire lake and are sometimes caught near Kenora. You can tell what a lake trout is feeding on by the colour of their flesh. Orange coloured lake trout feed primarily on aquatic invertebrates while white fleshed trout are fish eaters. The best tasting trout have orange flesh.
BURBOT
Also known as ling cod, eel pout, freshwater cod, maria or lawyer fish are part of the cod family. Although delicious boiled (poor man’s lobster) or batter fried, few anglers target or keep them. Most are caught accidentally in the winter by anglers fishing for lake trout. Filleting a burbot takes a bit of practice, but the taste experience is worth it. Summer finds the burbot sharing the deep cold water with lake trout and lake whitefish. Burbot are voracious night predators feeding on whatever prey fish is abundant and available. An individual burbot was found to have 179 fish in its stomach.
38 Kenora Stuff 2024
SMALLMOUTH BASS
Smallies or bronzebacks, along with largemouth bass and black crappie are members of the centrarchidae or sunfish family. Smallmouth bass are not native to Lake of the Woods, but were introduced in 1920 by Lands and Forest (MNRF) to diversify angling opportunities. Today, they are one of the most sought-after game fish in Lake of the Woods. Smallmouth bass overwinter on humps in almost 25 feet of water and are semi-dormant. While good eating, smallies are valued primarily for their tenacity at the end of a fishing line. Smallmouth bass love feeding on crayfish but grow faster and larger if they prey on fish.
LARGEMOUTH BASS
Nicknames include largie, bigmouth bass, bucketmouth bass. Collectively, smallmouth and largemouth bass are called black bass because their fry are black and like smallmouth were introduced into Lake of the Woods in 1930 by the MNRF. As striking as smallmouth are, largemouth are the true beauties of this family—coloured bright green to olive, hues of yellow, prominent black band running the length of its body and a massive menacing mouth. Largemouth bass also move to overwintering habitats seeking out shallow weedy bays, similar to their spawning areas. They tend to be more active than smallmouths, roaming the bay. Diet depends on size—young largemouth feed on aquatic insects but it isn’t long before fish, crayfish and frogs dominate the diet.
BLACK CRAPPIE
The other member of the centracid triad. While anglers practise catch and release with smallmouth and largemouth bass, black crappie are caught for consumption. Crappies are much smaller than their black bass relatives. Black crappie was introduced into USA waters of Lake of the Woods in 1923 and has spread throughout the lake. Large groups of crappies can be found overwintering in depths between 20 - 40 feet. Usually suspended a few feet off the bottom, they will readily take an angler’s bait and can be easily overfished. Black crappie will feed on small fish but their diet is mostly aquatic invertebrates.
LAKE STURGEON
The largest and longest living fish in Lake of the Woods. A 154 year-old, 94-kg sturgeon was caught in Lake of the Woods, while the largest ever recorded was 4.6-metre, 185-kg caught in the Roseau River, Manitoba. Sometimes called the “living fossil” they’ve roamed freshwater water for over 200 million years. In Ojibway, sturgeon is called name or namay (pronounced naa-mae). This fish was and continues to be significant to Anishinaabe people not only as a food source but an integral part of their cultural and spiritual identity. Sturgeon was considered “buffalo of the water”, representing the same relationship western plains people shared with the bison. Historically, lake sturgeon and lake whitefish were the dominant species in Lake of the Woods. In fact, Lake of the Woods was called the greatest sturgeon pond in the world. However, a combination of overfishing and habitat loss caused by dams and pulp and paper mills caused the population to collapse. Today, they are protected from commercial and sportfishing (on the Ontario side of Lake of the Woods) and are showing signs of recovery. Sturgeon are mainly bottom feeders eating aquatic insects, molluscs, crayfish and small fish.

POWs: German Prisoners of War on Lake of The Woods 1943 - 1946
During the Second World War, with many of Canada’s labour force overseas, the agricultural and natural resource industries of the country were suffering. By 1943, the production of pulp wood, lumber, and wood fuel had been so reduced that words like ‘crisis’ and ‘wood fuel famine’ were being used to describe the situation. The Canadian government, in seeking ways to alleviate the labour shortages, looked to the growing population of prisoners of war (POWs) for a solution. Axis prisoners being housed in Canada who volunteered began being shipped across the country to work in these labour camps.
Ontario-Minnesota Pulp and Paper, owner of the Kenora mill, was one of the businesses that received labour assistance through these programs, and in the fall of 1943, as the lumber camps were beginning their winter work, trainloads of prisoners arrived in Kenora. Six camps existed on Lake of The Woods, each having 50-100 POWs. There were several jobs and responsibilities at the camps. For those who were cutting pulpwood, they had to meet a daily quota before supper time. Other jobs included building and maintaining roads on which the wood could be hauled out in the spring, caring for horses, helping in the kitchen or doing daily chores. However, there was lots of leisure time as well. The lumber camps were extremely different from your average POW camp, as there was no barbed wire, no chains or fences. The men were canoeing, swimming, hiking and exploring Lake of The Woods. For many POWs their experience in Canada was very positive. After the war, many former POWs returned to live in Canada, including many on Lake of the Woods.
This exhibit features photographs, artifacts, stories and personal accounts regarding POWs on Lake of The Woods during World War II.

Symbols to the Stars
Art and science help us to understand and describe the world and our universe. Symbols to the Stars is an exhibition of personal and crew mission patches and flight suits designed and worn by Canadian astronauts that exemplify this connection between art and science. The patches highlight the history of symbolism in art and its relevance today, as well as embodying Canada’s contribution to space exploration.
From medieval knights’ crests to astronauts’ mission patches, symbolism is a centuriesold art methodology. Symbols are easy to recognize and remember, and can convey meaning that transcends language barriers. Today symbolism plays a crucial role in collaborative sports, group ventures, and marketing. In the field of space science, mission patches serve as symbolist documentation of progress. Viewers from all over the world can learn about missions and astronauts from their patches alone.
In addition to patches this exhibition features flight suits, personal items from Canadian astronauts as well as descriptions of astronauts, missions and other symbols found in Canadian Space Aviation.

Mino Bimaadiziwin: E.J. Kwandibens
Each Sunday afternoon through July and August we’ll be hosting a special speaker. Topics range from aspects of our history to the arts.
Multi-disciplinary artist E.J. Kwandibens, from the Northern Woodland Anishinaabek Loon Clan, takes us on his journey in creating this multidisciplinary art exhibition called Mino Bimaadiziwin. Reclaiming stories through an intergenerational connection on his family’s traditional territory, Waahbiidaahgaah Ontario, is how he chooses to honour the past, present, and future.
“Mino Bimaadiziwin” is an Anishnaabek philosophy that means “Balanced Good Life.” The artists’ vision in advancing reconciliation between the past and the present and contributing to his family’s cultural legacy for the future is at the heart of his practice. The Elders in this project are his family members, and residential school survivors, whose teachings and artistry are passed down to him, his daughter and granddaughter.
Featured in this exhibition are regalia, beadwork, dresses, traditional as well as ceremonial items including those made from birchbark.

KENORA DISTRICT FESTIVAL of the ARTS A long, proud history
BY LEANNE FOURNIER
In 1931, the Kenora Women’s Institute organized and financed the very first Kenora Musical Competition Festival. It featured performances in piano, violin and voice by individuals, choirs and orchestras. Events were held on May 14 at the Tourist Hotel and on May 15 at Derry’s Palace Theatre. The evening concluded with the Grand Concert.
To encourage competition, local citizens donated cups and awards. Many names will still be familiar today—Drewry, McLeod, Gunne, Cox, Cameron, Rioch, Silverman, Johnson, Dewdney and the Kenora Women’s Institute. The Institute and the school board donated silver medals for girls’ and boys’ individual classes.
It was renamed the Kenora District Festival of the Arts (KDFA) in 1962 in recognition of the large part played by the Speech Arts, Drama and Dancing sections. As a “District” event it also drew participants from communities outside of Kenora.
The Festival would see many great moments during the past 80 years. It would also be riddled with some of the usual challenges such as funding and volunteers and less usual, two world wars and a global pandemic.
Despite this, current Festival president Edward Franko said it has consistently celebrated the community’s love and interest in the arts as well as the rich and diverse population of artists who live and create here.
“What differentiates KDFA is that it has evolved to be less about winning trophies and more about artists getting better at what they do through adjudication and feedback from professionals.” This, he said, is invaluable. “The Masterclass approach of working with the young artist focuses on what they are doing well and how they can improve and advance further. It’s a super positive experience for participants in a variety of different art forms.”
The Festival currently offers adjudication for performers of all ages in Dance, Piano, Instrumental, Drama Speech, Vocal, and Visual Arts.

A WAY OF LIFE
If you grew up in Kenora, you were likely involved in the Festival in some way. Len Mark, who has volunteered with KDFA in several roles for over 20 years, posed a question at a Common Grounds event in town a few years ago. “I asked how many people in the audience had participated in KDFA and 98 per cent of the hands went up!”
Kerri Favreau is one such person. Born and raised in Kenora, Favreau brought up her own family here and teaches Kindergarten at St. Louis Living Arts School. She has been involved with KDFA for each of these parts of her life.
“I came to the Festival as a student myself performing “Hoppity Toad” in Junior Kindergarten,” she laughs. Her own three children were also heavily involved over the years. “It offered them a chance to learn about themselves and develop personally while connecting with the community.”
She adds, “I was very excited when visual art was expanded and brought to The Muse. I really love that there’s a reception at the Muse and families can visit and see the different art projects professionally displayed at the Art Centre.”
She says she has snapshots of so many memories of the years watching her own children and students perform.
“I love at the end of adjudication seeing kids go to their parents and that big hug. They’ve worked so hard and it’s a big moment when they’re done.”
She talks about how it’s so exciting to see how the professional adjudication brings in other perspectives. “You can’t have growth without challenge, the adjudication piece invites that growth.” She says it’s especially exciting to see a student do a second performance of their piece at the Festival Hi-Lites closing concert where they’ve incorporated the adjudicator’s feedback to make it even better.
Matt Kennedy, a professional filmmaker, is also a KDFA “lifer” and like Favreau, the Festival experience is definitely something he wants to pass on to his daughter, River.

“Every spring you look forward to Festival.” He likens it to sports where you’re always practicing for the big game. “It can be nerve wracking, the thrills and chills of performing on that stage—even if it’s for the most forgiving crowd. It’s character building. All of life is a performance and you have to put yourself out there.”
While he honours and respects the Festival’s long history, he too is happy to see the Festival adapting with the times with updates like the newly introduced KDFA Kafé—an opportunity for musicians in both ‘Akoustic’ and ‘Elektric Jam’ to come together, create music and get feedback from esteemed local musician and songwriter Alex Call - and other new approaches. “Hip hop dance, visual arts – it’s continuing forward with adaptations to support the modern artistic interests of people, which is really cool.”
Sue McIntosh is another “lifer” who has made a life in music.
“I started singing in the Festival as a 5- or 6-year-old and have continued for almost 60 years.” She has participated as a teacher of guitar, band and vocal programs at Beaver Brae Secondary School and as a director and vocalist for numerous local choirs and ensembles.
“For singers, there aren’t a lot of venues to perform. This is a fantastic way to practice being onstage and having an audience.”
Like others, she credits the long-time Festival for building bridges and making connections in the arts community. “People are always surprised by the talent that we have when we hear the kids or see the artwork or watch them dance.”
While McIntosh participates in the Vocal and Choir sections, she’s especially gratified watching and coaching many students who have performed at the Festival during her career. “Ultimately, I can open the door, but they have to go through it.”
McIntosh credits the success of today’s Festival to the hard work of many volunteers over the years, most notably the late Lucia Melnick. “She wouldn’t take no for an answer, and if she thought the Festival needed something, she got it!” McIntosh hopes KDFA can continue to be successful with the same kind of energy.
Erin McCuaig, owner and operator of Danceworks in Kenora, was involved in bringing dance back to the Festival about a decade ago when she returned to Kenora.
“I participated growing up and my grandma, Edna Kidd was chair for a while.” The arts were always part of Erin’s life.
“You learn so much through the arts, how to persevere through challenges, and be brave enough to get up on stage.” She sees the professional feedback that dancers receive during adjudication as hugely positive. “People learn how dancers can be coached to improve and what the industry is looking for if pursuing dance at a higher level.”
KDFA HISTORY
1931-1938
The Women’s Institute of Kenora began and ran the Kenora Music Festival Competition. By 1938, the Festival, had expanded to four days (April 11 to 14) and included spoken poetry, one act plays, folk dancing and a poster contest.
1952
The Registered Teachers of Kenora supported the revival of a music Festival.
1939-1951
Thirteen-year hiatus during WWII and the post war recovery period.
1958
The Festival was split into two sections: Instrumental and vocal music; drama and dancing.
1957
The Festival reached 1,000 entries involving over 5,000 people. Some participants arrived by train from Dryden and surrounding areas.
1969 French verse was offered.
1962
Name was changed to the Kenora District Festival of the Arts.
1972
The Festival was struggling to find funding and was forced to take out a personal loan to carry on. Fundraising efforts including two Benefit Balls and a “Friends of the Festival” campaign were undertaken.
1974
The modified workshop (self-improvement concept) was introduced whereby adjudicators would evaluate and make suggestions to the participants. Trophy competition was continued.

She’s particularly fond of the category where dancers can enter their own choreography. “It’s really fabulous, and the school has at least two to three entries a year. It can be a scary thing to do, not just performing someone else’s work, but conveying a story you want to tell; it’s a whole different level.”
She also sees the value to the community as a whole but recognizes the challenges of having a Festival of this size in a smaller town. “Continuing to get the buy in and the entries from the community, support of local educators, and for teachers to be supportive of the Festival and promoting it with students and families—building all of those relationships and the community support— are essential.”
Mark agrees. As both a long-time volunteer and past KDFA president, he recognizes that the Festival has gone through some “growing pains” as have other similar organizations but its
importance to the community is immeasurable.
“It’s everybody’s responsibility to encourage it.”
He also sees it as everybody’s opportunity to participate. “Get up and do your thing, the rewards are great and that has a huge effect on the community over time.
We’ve survived this long; we should be good for another 80 years!”
Kenora District Festival of Arts runs each April. Artistic disciplines are performed at a variety of venues around the community. For information, historic results and up-to-date schedules and syllabi, visit kdfa.ca.
