In the spirit of reconciliation, The City of Kenora acknowledges that we are on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and Métis of Treaty #3. The City of Kenora was originally the land base of one collective First Nation community, which was separated into three communities now known as Wauzhushk Onigum, Niisaachewan, and Washagamis Bay First Nations. Kenora now sustains many others, all of whom have been welcomed to peacefully share and care for these ancestral lands and waters.

We’re thrilled many of our staple events are returning this summer, including Canada Day festivities, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Harbourfest and KBI. Starting June 15, the Matiowski Farmers Market continues under the Whitecap Pavilion every Wednesday and we’ve added a couple of Open Air Markets taking over Main Street with vendors, music and children’s activities. New to this year’s events calendar is Artsfest at Memorial Park, July 22-23, and Science North’s Great Northern Ontario Roadshow later in August.

During your visit, be sure to stop by the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre to explore the permanent displays and Science North activities areas. The Discovery Centre features a freshwater fish exhibit, nautical knot-tying station and northern Ontario’s largest antique outboard motor exhibit. Science North is also presenting its Indigenous Ingenuity Exhibit September 16 - October 30.

This “little cool festival” returns to beautiful Caliper Lake Provincial Park in Nestor Falls. The music festival is a little Indie, a little folk, a little rock and a whole lot of fun. Centred around professional and emerging musicians, folk bands and singer/songwriters, this year’s Moose N' Fiddle features acts from Sierra Noble, Little Miss Higgins and the Slocan Ramblers. The festival features food trucks, artisans’ village and a craft beer tent. Head south on Highway 71; turn onto Caliper Lake Road just south of Nestor Falls.

A celebration of Kenora’s diverse musical talent. A one-day showcase of local talent on the outdoor stage at beautiful Anicinabe Park on Lake of the Woods.

Northwestern Ontario’s largest market, the Matiowski Farmers’ Market, is back all summer long for your artsy, foodie and crafty pleasures. Everyone is welcome Powwows are sacred ceremonial rites and we ask that you acknowledge and respect these activities by observing all instructions provided by the Master of Ceremonies.

Here are a few powwow etiquette tips: • Please stand and remove all hats/caps during all ceremonial songs and dances, including the Grand Entry, flag songs, veteran songs, honour songs, and any other designated songs.

• Always ask permission before taking any photos.

There are songs/dances such as the Grand Entry where the MC will ask specifically that photos are not taken.

• Do not touch dancers’ regalia without permission.

• Do not pick up any pieces of regalia or feathers you find on the ground. Please alert a dancer or a powwow committee member.

• The sacred fire is an integral part of the powwow gathering. Only sacred medicines are offered to the fire. Please follow the directions of the fire keeper for your offering.

• Do not bring drugs or alcohol to a powwow and do not attend a powwow intoxicated.

• Dogs are not permitted around the powwow area.

• Bring your own chairs and not sit on someone else's chair unless you ask permission. Tents with chairs are reserved for elders, dancers and drummers.

Outdoor Spaces Kenora Trails Local trail systems are ever-evolving and weave through urban landscape, quiet wetlands and wilderness, varying structures, terrain, distances and usages.

Mink Bay Trail

Rabbit Lake Trail System

A provincially designated wetland, beautifully nestled in the neighbourhood of Keewatin. The trail includes a grassy and well-worn forest trail, coupled with sidewalks and green spaces through Keewatin’s business district. Feeder trails include the Mink Rapids Trail & Slabtown Way, which incorporate a beautiful wooden walk bridge that leads you to over 82 acres of historically significant cultural landscape.

4.3km, easy-moderate terrain. Hiking/biking.

Partially inclusive, accessible and paved, the main and feeder trails provide access to the natural beauty and quiet of the south shore of Rabbit Lake. Following the shoreline, the trail meets up with Garrow Park and Beach. 5 km, easymoderate terrain. Walking/cycling.

Rat Portage Urban Trail Meandering along flat or gently rolling paved city streets with sidewalks of wood, interlocking brick or concrete, start at McLeod Park, walk through the downtown core to Anicinabe Park and then along Laurenson's Creek and back to city centre. 8 km, easy-moderate terrain. Walking/hiking.

Waa’say’ Gaa Boo (Tunnel Island Trail) A relationship gathering place with 8,000 years of history, a place where relationships are affirmed, confirmed and maintained. Stunning views of the Winnipeg River and Norman Dam can be seen along the series of trails which make up Tunnel Island. The trail also includes several lookouts and historic points of interest along its path.

Please respect the heritage value of this sacred site while enjoying the land. 6-10 km, moderate-high terrain. Hiking/biking.

Vernon Nature Area A unique area that links three very diverse vegetation zones found within Canada. These designated trails will acquaint you with the transition between the Boreal Forest Region, the St. Lawrence-Great Lake Forest Region and the Prairie Grasslands. Access the trails by following the signs along Mackenzie Portage Road, off Highway 17 West. 5 km, easy-moderate terrain.

Rushing River Trails Rushing River Provincial Park is a family-favourite camping destination offering beaches, playground, interpretive programs, hiking trails and endless opportunities for exploring. The park features a series of trails, available for overnight and day-use guests.

Beaver Pond Trail This short loop starts next to campsite #102 and takes hikers to a quiet beaver pond full of fragrant water lilies.

It’s an excellent trail to see forest songbirds, great blue herons, a host of flowering plants and wildlife. Plan an early morning or evening stroll when the birds and shoreline wildlife are most active. 1.1 km, easy terrain.

Granite Knoll Trail

Lower Rapids Trail

This 2.7 km loop branches from the Beaver Pond Trail and meanders along the shoreline of Dogtooth Lake, over millions of years of geological history and then swings back through open jack pine forest and over gnarly granite hummocks. See a forest that burned once and will surely burn again and hear the songs of warblers, sparrows and vireos that make the forest home. 2.7 km, moderate terrain. Walking/hiking.

This scenic loop trail begins at the entrance parking lot on Highway 71.

It follows what may be an old portage around the rapids and waterfalls.

Watch for waterfowl on the river and listen for the call of the green frog and the almost constant singing of the red-eyed vireo. 2 km, moderate terrain. Walking/hiking.

Beaches, Parks & Playgrounds Kenora boasts five maintained beaches within the city. Enjoy the scenic shores of Lake of the Woods, the rippling waves on the Winnipeg River and the peaceful ease of Rabbit Lake.

Anicinabe Park & Beach

Beatty Park

Located just south of Highway 17 East, at the intersection by Canadian Tire, turn onto Mikana Way. Anicinabe Park offers a full-service campground with over 100 sites for trailers and tents.

The public beach has a protected swimming area with a wooden walkway crossing from shore to shore. Anicinabe Park loosely translated from Ojibway means ¨gathering place¨ so gather your friends and family and join in some summer fun.

Situated in the neighbourhood of Keewatin on Tenth Street and abuts Keewatin Bay on beautiful Lake of the Woods. Beatty Park has a cenotaph honouring Keewatin’s veterans and is named after Dr. W. J. Beatty who was Keewatin’s first doctor in 1897. Relax at one of many of the available picnic tables and watch the boats come and go from the government wharf and nearby Two Bears Marina.

Coney Island Beach

McLeod Park

Located in Kenora Bay, minutes from downtown, Coney Island is only accessible by water. This beach is worth the trip and one of the must-dos this summer. With a wonderful, westerly view of Lake of the Woods, Coney Island Beach offers a large field for soccer, Frisbee or games of choice.

A picturesque park home to Kenora’s mascot “Husky the Muskie” on Lakeview Drive just moments west of downtown Kenora. Husky the Muskie stands 40 feet tall and was erected in 1967. You will enjoy a tour of the McMillan Tugboat and watch the Rotary Goodwill Geyser shoot 200 feet into the air right out of the Lake of the Woods (on the hour for ten minutes).

McLeod Park has beautiful showpiece gardens and is the gateway to the Rat Portage Urban Trail.

Coney Island Shuttle service is available on the Harbourfront and Lake of the Woods Marina. $10 per person, return trip.

Keewatin Beach Located in the neighbourhood of Keewatin, the beach is just south of Highway 17 West on Keewatin Beach Road. This beach is nestled in between residential properties and offers a wonderful view of Lake of the Woods. Relax in the sunshine along the sandy beach or rest and read in the shady areas available. Peacefulness, gentle waves and fun in the sun are what Keewatin Beach offers.

Garrow Park & Beach Just north of downtown at the end of Birchwood Crescent is Garrow Park & Beach. The park is connected to the Rabbit Lake Trail System with a paved accessible path along the water’s edge. Kenora Rowing Club is situated here and regularly hosts rowing competitions throughout the summer.

Norman Park & Beach Located just south of Highway 17 West at the Lake-Vu Co-op intersection in the neighbourhood of Norman, not only do you have a wonderful view of the action on the Lake of the Woods but you also have the added pleasure of Hoopla Island water park and the Kenora Rotary Splash Park, The splash park is inclusive and accessible.

The Lake Kenora is nestled on the northern shore of famous Lake of the Woods, and while you're here you’re never a few minutes away from the lake. Getting on the water can be an unforgettable experience and visiting Kenora isn’t quite complete without a paddle or cruise on the lake. Explore the lake, its islands, landmarks and history.

Fishing Lake of the Woods is famous for its world class fishery. The vast size of the lake allows for boundless opportunities to experiment with your gear and skills. With a variety of species to fish—walleye, northern pike, muskie, small or largemouth bass or lake trout­—drop a line and enjoy the challenge.

Paddling Grab your favourite vessel, find some water and propel yourself along shorelines, through channels, into bays and onto beaches. Be it canoe, kayak or paddleboard, it doesn’t get much better than exploring our tranquil waters while dipping or dragging your toes in the water as you paddle along. In the right places you’ll likely come across more wildlife—like turtles and birds—than other people, creating a cool connection to our natural friends.

Boating Lake of the Woods is a haven to be explored; a jewel to be discovered. One day of cruising around the lake with family and friends can be the highlight of the summer. Ask around for quiet beaches to picnic or islands worth exploring. Be sure to prepare yourselves with plenty of food and drinks because it may be a long day of pleasure before making your way home. If you don’t have your own boat, grab a group of your favourite people and rent a pontoon boat to enjoy the waters and sunshine. If a jetski is more your style, a few marinas have those available to you as well.

M.S. Kenora The legendary M.S. Kenora cruises daily from Kenora’s harbourfront past Coney Island Beach then heads south on a spectacular circle route of the northern section of Lake of the Woods. For a relaxing nearby-town ride, take a guided pontoon boat tour; for more of a journey, let knowledgeable guides take you down the lake sharing landmarks, stories and lake knowledge. There is an abundance of history to learn and many secluded beaches and bays to explore. Every trip is designed for you. Some of the guides’ favourites: Scotty’s Beach, S Island and Saunders’ Beach. TAKE A WALK ON THE

Wild Side

As dusk enveloped Lookout 3, I called out. Silence.

Two, three, six more times I called in vain. Our hopes sank, but then in the distance we heard a faint reply.

It grew stronger by the minute until suddenly the giant creature swooped down onto a dead branch five metres above our heads. Moments later, its mate joined it on the opposite branch. Staring down at us with huge piercing but curious eyes, the two Great Horned Owls seemed to ask “You called”?

Where’s lookout 3? Right in the middle of the Vernon Nature Area. If you are looking for a natural adventure minutes from Kenora, this is the place to visit.

Accessible by car from Highway 17, five kilometres down McKenzie Portage Road, or by boat through Bulman Bay, Lake of the Woods. Day parking and mooring are available and access is free.

What’s so special about Vernon? It’s a unique transition zone with representative trees and plants from three distinctive vegetation regions: the Boreal Forest, St. Lawrence/ Great Lakes Forest and Prairie Grassland.

If this isn’t enough to entice you, on the eastern boundary of this 95-hectare property are wetland and shoreline habitats bordering Lake of the Woods. Depending on the season, you can hike, jog, bike, ski, snowshoe or walk your dog on over five kilometres of designated trails winding through a diversity of mature forests.

Located on crown land, the nature area is administered by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry Kenora District office. However, the property, its trails and infrastructure are maintained primarily by volunteers—Friends of the Vernon. Funds supporting the nature area are raised through fundraisers, grants and donations. Many of the structures you will see and enjoy were built by the Construction and Manufacturing Technology students of Beaver Brae Secondary School.

If you come by car, it’s a short walk to the trail head. Here you will find a beautiful timber framed picnic shelter donated by the Kenora Rotary Club and a large map with trail descriptions to help you plan your trek. Be warned this is also the site of our newest wildlife attraction—a flock of zany chickadees and nuthatches who have taken it upon themselves to be our unofficial greeters. Truth be told, they are just looking for a handout (literally) of sunflowers seeds.

Have your camera ready; these forest clowns will land on your head or hand eagerly looking for a quick snack.

The over five kilometres of trails can be easily walked in a couple of hours, but if you are rushed for time, shorter loops are possible. A must-see is the beach on the eastern edge of the property. Arguably one of the finest natural beaches in the Kenora area, its gradual slope and shallow water are ideal for children and dogs to splash in. Of course, if you come by boat, have a swim after your hike!

Each of the trails has its own distinctive attraction and story to tell. Four of them, Pine, Lookout, Aspen and Fern trails house cathedral-like stands of 80–100 year old red pines. The Aspen trail is aptly named meandering through a stand of gigantic aspen and poplar trees. Several years ago, a shear wind touched down, snapping a number of the mammoth trees like matchsticks. Not to worry, these broken giants now provide ideal habitat for cavity nesting birds and young poplars are springing up to take over from their aging parents. Scattered throughout Vernon are stands of trembling, large-tooth and balsam poplars.

The Fern trail offers a chance to wade waist deep through bracken and the occasional oak fern, but its main attraction is a towering 250 plus year old white pine.

Strategically located on the Lookout trail are Lookouts 3 and 4. After a short easy climb to Lookout 3, you will be rewarded with a bird’s eye view of the forest. Perched on the edge of a cliff, this lookout with its protective railing places you at the top of the forest canopy with the forest floor far below. Keep your eyes open for woodpeckers— pileated, downy, hairy and yellow-bellied sapsuckers can all be spotted or heard knocking on the surrounding trees. The climb to Lookout 4 is more challenging but the panoramic view of Lake of the Woods with Kenora in the background is well worth the effort.

The Wetland trail, skirting the shore of Lake of the Woods and traversing an extensive wetland via a boardwalk, is a photographer’s treasure trove. Take time at Lookout 2 for wildlife viewing. Red-necked grebes have been observed nesting on the long spit, while more than the occasional bald eagle or osprey hunts or roosts here. Look for basking turtles or muskrats working on their mud houses. Off in the distance is an osprey nesting platform erected by Hydro One. Back in the forest, the Wetland trail passes through an enchanting area with an extensive rock face on one side covered with lush mosses, lichens and ferns. These plants remain vividly green even in the depths of winter.

On the opposite side flowing through an ash stand is an intermittent stream filled with bright marsh marigolds in the spring. Crossing over the boardwalk brings you to Lookout 1 overlooking Bulman Bay. Beaver Brae Secondary School students skillfully built this lookout around a towering white pine. It’s a wonderful location to observe a nearby beaver lodge or multitude of waterfowl species, including white pelicans.

A “must do” is the Bur Oak trail. After a steep but worthwhile climb, you emerge from stands of immense aspen or red pine onto a plateau of diminutive bur oak and ironwood—the contrast is stunning. In the summer, the bur oak and ironwood provide a lush low green canopy filtering the sunlight, leaving a dappled effect on the forest floor.

Winter reveals the bur oak’s twisted, gnarly limbs creating a surreal almost eerie atmosphere. Ironwood retain their dead brown leaves making them easily distinguishable from the neighbouring oak.

Vernon is not only a popular recreational and wildlife viewing area for the residents of Kenora, Washagamis Bay First Nation and cottagers, it is important to our schools.

Vernon is an integral part of educational programming for kindergarten classes going on a nature walk, high school students studying forest ecology or competing in Envirothon, and the Construction and Manufacturing Technology students honing their building skills.

More and more groups are utilizing Vernon including youth groups practicing wilderness skills to organizations hosting staff days or supporting fundraisers for community programs. Recognizing its importance to the community, the KeewatinPatricia District School Board included Vernon in a promotional video to attract new educators to the region. Even couples are using the Vernon as a venue to exchange their vows.

Businesses and tourism associations realizing its significance to the local economy are promoting the Vernon Nature Area for eco-tourism. The trails, viewing platforms and easy access provide an ideal opportunity for guests staying at hotels, lodges, campgrounds or with friends or family to explore a natural wonderland minutes from Kenora.

The Vernon Nature Area is a real community effort offering a connection to the wild. Offering outdoor recreation, wildlife viewing, educational opportunities or just a place to “unwind” in a beautiful natural setting, Vernon is the perfect place to lace up your adventure shoes and explore. The Friends of the Vernon have erected new trail maps and signs making finding your way around easier than ever. The Vernon motto: “Explore the Vernon – It’s Wild.” 

Last autumn the City of Kenora embarked to refine its tourism marketing position and develop a new tourism brand and outward marketing strategy.

Local creative agency Wake Marketing was tasked with redefining this brand position. Utilizing visitor research, community engagement and support from the tourism stakeholders, here we present Kenora’s new tourism brand story.

SMALL TOWN CHARM

Lake of the Woods is what we are selling. Period.

Visitors love our restaurants, our shops, and our events.

But they are not coming here because of those things. They are coming here to experience the lake or visit folks who live the lake lifestyle every day.

We now know the lake is about more than boating – we tried this and it did not resonate with visitors who enjoy the lake as a swimmer, sightseer and so much more. Moving forward when we mention the lake – which will be often – we’ll be inclusive to all activities and participants.

The flagship events centralize at the Whitecap Pavilion in the peak of the summer.

Winter Stuff Mount Evergreen Skiing & Snowboarding

Tubing

Mount Evergreen Ski Club’s downhill venue boasts 11 runs, two t-bar lifts and a terrain park. The Ski Club offers equipment rentals for all ages and sizes and offers individual or group downhill skiing and snowboarding lessons. Day-use and seasonal passes are available online. The licensed chalet offers a retreat from the hills with warm drinks and snacks.

Introduced at Mount Evergreen a few years ago, the tube runs have continued to grow in popularity. A great winter activity for the entire family, now with two parallel runs, tubers can enjoy tubing by the hour or by the day. Passes are available at skikenora.com. Helmets for children are recommended.

CrossCountry Skiing At the base of Mount Evergreen, Kenora Nordic Trails consists of 20 kilometers of exceptional trails. Three kilometers are solar lit for night skiing.

Day and seasonal passes are available online or at the Mount Evergreen Ski Club chalet.

On the Ice Ice Fishing If you have the gear to get out on Lake of the Woods, take a ride south on the ice road from Kenora and find walleye on the many humps and reefs scattered around the lake. The central section of the lake has the best population of fish, in the area known as the Manitou. If you’re interested in fishing some of the smaller lakes around town you can use the Ontario Fish ON-Line website to see a listing of the fish species in each body of water.

Rabbit Lake Rink & Skating Trail The kilometre-long skating loop circles a large cleared and flooded rink. The trail is maintained all winter long and is free for all to enjoy. For a game of pick-up, bring your nets and a few pucks; likely there will be others to play with as well. Skate-tying shacks are right nearby for wind-protected seating. Access the rink and trail at the west end of the lake on Rabbit Lake Road and park on the shoreline or the plowed parking area on the lake itself.

Ice Roads Experience the stunning beauty of winterized Lake of the Woods in the comfort of your own vehicle as you can explore hundreds of kilometers of ice roads. Ice roads are plowed from town and stretch to various parts of the lake. Often used by cottagers, contractors and ice fishermen, the roads are well traveled and offer a unique perspective on life in the North. Use caution when driving on the ice and if uncertain, ask an authority.

On the Trail Walk, Hike, Fat Bike or Snowshoe Our most popular summer trails, including Tunnel Island, Vernon Nature Trails, Mink Bay and Rushing River, offer varying degrees of winter wilderness walking and hiking exploration and challenge. The tranquillity is unmatched under a fresh blanket of snow. Parking is available nearby each venue and pack a lunch for a picnic along the route.

Approximately 50 kilometers north of Kenora in Minaki are over 20 kilometers of groomed skiing and walking trails.

Dogs are welcome to run along with you off-leash. Trail fees do apply.

Since 1989, Sunset Trail Riders has been Kenora’s local Snowmobile Club.

Associated with the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC), the local club grooms hundreds of kilometres of trails in the Kenora region reaching westward to the Ontario/ Manitoba border. The club offers training programs, a trail guide and updated trail reports, as well as permit information at sunsettrailriders.ca.

Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Rushing River, south of Kenora on Highway 71. 16 kilometres of groomed trails await your discovery and range from easy to challenging. Winter day passes are purchasable at the selfserve fee station.

Museum

The award-winning Lake of the Woods Museum, one of the finest small museums in Canada, was established in 1964 and seeks to promote understanding of and respect for the cultures and heritage of the Lake of the Woods area, and to engage a diverse community in discovery and learning.

Today, this well-established museum is home to a varied and intriguing collection of artifacts and thematic displays, exhibits, special events and programming.

MARCH 13 – JUNE 4

Dakobinaawaswaan (Baby in a Cradleboard) Dakobinaawaswaan (Baby in a Cradleboard) gathers more than 100 cradleboards representing Indigenous communities from across North America. In the language of Aninishaabeg peoples, “dakobinaawaswaan” describes a baby being wrapped and placed in a cradleboard, or tikinagaan. This exhibition showcases the strong legacy and beauty of traditional baby carriers—including miniatures, toy cradles and baskets—of the many Indigenous communities across Turtle Island.

Through a wide range of imagery, beadwork, and specialized materials the cradleboard is honoured as a vessel of motherhood, cultural traditions, community, and resurgence.

COVID has prevented the presentation of this exhibit until this year­—making it poignantly timed.

Art Centre

The Douglas Family Art Centre opened in December of 2019. The creation of the Art Centre was prompted by the generous offer of two longtime lake residents, Nicki and Bryce Douglas. They have been collecting the Lake of the Woods themed colour woodcut prints, watercolours, and engravings of Canadian artist Walter J. Phillips for over 30 years. Because of their connection to, and love of, Lake of the Woods and Kenora, they have gifted their collection of 67 pieces, to the City of Kenora through the Art Centre.

Their gift presented a wonderful opportunity and initiated a process of establishing an Art Centre in Kenora, the community’s first public art gallery. Bryce Douglas put words to their vision for the Art Centre: “We would like to see a vibrant art centre that would present opportunities for students of all ages to learn about art and for the arts community to share ideas and develop their talents. As well, it would be a place to display not only the Walter J. Phillips collection but the work of local artists, Indigenous artists and aspiring artists.”

Hardship & Resilience CAME TO BE

This summer The Lake of the Woods Museum is hosting the exhibit Hardship & Resilience: The History of Ukrainians in Kenora. In the past few months it has been impossible to ignore the crisis in Ukraine.

Russian aggression toward Ukraine is responsible for thousands of deaths and the destruction of whole cities. Seeing the images on television and social media has been extremely troubling. With Ukraine in the news I’ve been asked more than once if the upcoming summer’s exhibit at the Lake of the Woods Museum was planned because of the crisis in Ukraine.

The answer is no. The story behind the exhibit is a little more involved than that.

Truth be told, it started more than 10 years ago with a roadside perogy dinner.

Flashback to November 2010; I was moving from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Kenora. I’d stopped into a roadside motel in Marathon, Ontario after a day of dodging snow and semi trucks. I’d been driving all day and was starving. I plopped down in the seat in the attached restaurant and apologized for coming in right before close.

“I know you’re about to close. I’ll take whatever is easiest for you.”

A few minutes later the server came out of the kitchen with an absolute mountain of perogies, complete with sour cream, bacon, and onions. It was heaven. Coming from the east coast I’d never had a proper perogy before, and for me this was love at first bite. On my way to Kenora, from the east coast, I’d accidentally found my new favourite food, and in the process accidentally started planning for an exhibit 12 years later.

In the summer of 2018 I curated the exhibit The Homefront 1918. It was all about what was happening in Kenora during World War I, 1914–1918. While doing the research for that exhibit I was reminded by Bill Zroback that Ukrainians had been persecuted and some even interned as enemy aliens during the war. The Ukrainians had come from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a nation that Canada was now at war with. Around the same time Cindy Melenchenko very graciously gifted the museum with some of her parents’ traditional Ukrainian clothing. The story of the Ukrainian internment and the Melenchenko’s traditional clothing both became focal points of The Homefront exhibit—this was a story that had never been told in a local context and people were very interested.

The next year I was in the midst of wedding planning. That is to say my (now) wife was planning the wedding and I was trying to be encouraging, but mostly trying to stay out of the way. I did have one request though—if my whole Maritimer family was going to come to Kenora for a wedding, then I wanted to serve them my favourite Kenora food— perogies. And, from my perspective there was only one venue choice for the wedding reception—The Ukrainian Hall.

We contacted the hall and the members were very gracious and accommodating. In the planning stages we went to the hall on Fourth Street and everything looked great. During that visit I noticed a plaque on the wall commemorating 100 years of the Kenora Ukrainian Literary Society—1915–2015.

The Kenora Ukrainian Literary Society had organized in 1915 in the middle of World War I state-sponsored persecution of Ukrainians. “How interesting,” I thought, “there must be a story there.”

The next day at the museum I dug into our files to learn more about the situation to find… nothing. Or at least very little. This incredible story that was filled with popular local people had never been properly told at the museum. In the next few months I met with representatives of the Literary Society and other community members to gauge their interest in a museum exhibit on the history of Ukrainians in Kenora. Everyone I spoke to was extremely supportive and agreed to help, including sitting on an exhibit committee.

The decision was made in October 2019 to run an exhibit on the history of Ukrainians in Kenora in the summer of 2020.

The goal was to host an exhibit, but also to research, collect information and stories about the Ukrainian community in Kenora. We are in a unique position at the moment where many of the local stories will be lost in the next few years.

This project is a vehicle to make sure we record our unique local stories and heritage for future generations.

The first meeting of the History of Ukrainians in Kenora exhibit committee was in February 2020. About two weeks later we had our first covid lockdown. The exhibit was rescheduled for 2021, but as things went with the yo-yo scheduling during covid times we had to shift things around again. The (hopefully) last rescheduling meant that the exhibit shows in the summer of 2022.

Alas, here we are. It’s a sad coincidence that Ukraine is in crisis at the same time that the museum is running an exhibit on our local history of Ukrainians in Kenora. In discussing current events at an exhibit committee meeting, an exhibit member made the point that, "we are able to meet in peace and safety in Canada because of the sacrifice of our ancestors. The best thing we can do at the moment is honour their sacrifices and tell their stories.” So that is exactly what we are doing. 

Power of Place THIS SHOW IS MY LOVE LETTER TO LAKE OF THE WOODS

About 11 years ago, I started to search for places that Walter J. Phillips painted on Lake of the Woods. It was a summer hobby I enjoyed casually while also exploring the lake for beaches and new islands.

This “treasure hunt” involved bringing prints of his artwork, lining up islands and channels, finding unique rock formations that might give a clue as to the location of a specific Walter J. painting. Once I found a treasured viewpoint, I painted at the same place, feeling a kinship to the spirits of the artists who have gone before me.

I would imagine what the lake looked like 100 years ago, and what the artist thought while painting. I considered how they set up patterns and designs on canvas, and how we all share the same experience in creating art. At one with the subtle sounds of nature, especially the quiet and mesmerizing movement of water, my heart beat and breath slowed and my eyebrows softened while a painting unfolded gently in front of me. Feeling the shift of light and the warmth of the sun, seeing curious animals, and becoming a small part of the landscape I am painting are the rewards of “the treasure hunt.”

I first discovered this island in the summer of 2011. Its distinct rock formation gave it away instantly. Since then I’ve been back many times to paint on location from various angles and different times of day from the nearest island. The first time I painted it on location, I had a good look around the island that I was on. It had a wonderful spot to sit and set up a travel easel.

I set up there and imagined my predecessors, Walter J. and my mentor and friend, Robert Genn, painting there as well. I truly felt a part of the tribe of artists and the connection to these two in this place. I found a tin can tucked between two rocks close by, all rusted out and cut down the middle, and I imagined this might have been Walter J’s lunch. Oh to have a time machine, and see what the area looked like 100 years ago! So, I tucked in a wooden brush with my initials carved in it next to the old can.

Maybe future artists will be on the same treasure hunt.

What draws me to this area is the incredible diversity and ruggedness of the landscape and the lake. A powerful force draws specific people to this area—it’s a place that holds a lot of magic. Conditions here are harsh and extreme. Winters can be beautiful and brutal at the same time. People who live here are tough, resilient, just like the pine trees that grow out of rocks. We persevere, and are rewarded by the most unexpected beautiful moments, by places that are unknown to the rest of the world, and of course, by the most incredible summers. Nothing is ever the same here from one moment to the next.

As people, we change everyday, and it affects the way we see our surroundings. Our landscape also changes every day. The foliage, the air, the way the light dances on the

water at different angles throughout the year—it’s always different from one day to the next. The ever-changing skies and the different personalities of the water make me realize that each day holds a treasure of its own.

We can get lost in these landscapes and lose track of time. We feel part of nature, and creativity overtakes us. It happened to Walter J. Phillips. It happens to me. That is the Power of this Place. 
