Chronicling the best of our great community It all started over beer. That’s how Rob Dokuchie and Tom Thomson describe the early days of their plans to bring a homegrown, “world class” annual publication, based on the popular Where Magazine concept, to Kenora. Dokuchie, a graphic designer, and Thomson, a photographer were pretty sure they had what it would take to pull such a venture off. But they also knew it wasn’t about them. The two, both homegrown themselves, shared an unwavering passion for the local community. They were pretty sure that story would tell itself.

Once they’d toasted the concept and came up with the name – Kenora Stuff – things moved quickly.

“Rob started doing mock-ups, we began sales in January and had it out May long weekend,” Thomson recalls. That first issue in 2001 was a mere 32 pages, but set the stage for a rich legacy, brimming with the unconcealed love affair its founders (under their new entity Manitou Publishing) had with Kenora and Lake of the Woods. It featured a romantic tale of the Grace Anne II written by the late Jake MacDonald, a fond endorsement from fishing icon Gord Pyzer, fashion and food spreads showcasing local models and fare, and a gentle “Parting Shot”, by Thomson that reminded readers to respect the land and waters that Kenora and Lake of the Woods generously shares with the rest of the world.

The “Parting Shot” would be a regular feature on the last page of the magazine, providing a platform for Thomson to share his outstanding photography and occasionally, his views on a variety of topics related to lake life.

Kenora was clearly ready to share its “stuff” with its burgeoning population of tourists and seasonal residents.

Dokuchie said, “The response exceeded our expectations. We had great relationships already with a lot of the local businesses, so this was a natural evolution.” The goal was to up the game for the marketing being done in the community and to build tourism by enticing visitors through a combination of high quality photography, layout and design. “We wanted to showcase just how much was available here in the best way,” he said.

“Visitors like to go where locals go, so we wanted to share some of those secrets.” The business model rested on advertising from locally-owned companies.

For Thomson, this is where the fun came in.

“We went out into the streets of Kenora to shoot photos for the ads,” he said. “It was the talk of the town.

Local people were featured in the fashion section, retailers had their family and friends in their ads. It created a really good buzz.”

It also helped that Tourism Kenora and the city were onboard from the beginning. Dokuchie said, “We had a good group of people who came together to get it off the ground.”

The arrival of Stuff in hotels, local shops, and tourism venues quickly became the first sign of summer.

Dokuchie describes how they would personally drive out to the printers in Winnipeg and load up their vehicles with pallets of magazines to distribute early copies throughout Kenora. “The smell of ink in the vehicle, that became the first sign of spring for us!”

It was fairly smooth sailing, steadily growing year by year with new advertisers, the latest fashions, an evergrowing calendar of events, established and new places to imbibe in culinary and liquid pleasures, and positive stories about Kenora life and all that it had to offer its visitors.

The third issue in 2003, then up to 40 pages, featured a heartwarming coming of age story of boy conquers the boat, which was an excerpt from Jake MacDonald’s award-winning Houseboat Chronicles. A couple of issues later, in the 2006/2007 issue, local reporter Tim Davidson chronicled the Kenora Thistles’ short-lived Stanley Cup title in 1907.

Then in 2007, Dokuchie and Thomson pulled out all the stops with plans to bring Hollywood to Kenora (or was it Kenora to Hollywood?) featuring fashion moguls Chip and Pepper Foster, who have a long history with Lake of the Woods. Their plans to meet up with the brothers in L.A. along with actors/comedians Rob Schneider and Will Arnett, who had also spent some time in Kenora, didn’t quite pan out. But all was not lost when a rousing game of street hockey ensued with Chip and Pepper in a suburb of L.A. followed by a photo shoot and eventually a police “escort” out of town. The 2007/2008 cover featuring the Fosters hitchhiking to Lake of the Woods is a favourite.

Thomson said this “event” was a sign of how things often went. “We would always go with the flow and see what happened. We weren’t covering hard news, we wanted something upbeat.” But there was also those stories that were part of the fabric of the community of the time; downtown revitalization after the paper mill closure, the irksome roundabout, a new city brand, a number of stories about local and lake culture, and eventually, in the 2013/2014 issue, a feature story about the revival of the Lake of the Woods Brewing Company. In that issue, Thomson’s “Parting Shot” of an eagle, looking surprisingly human as it walked off the page, may have been a sign of things to come.

The final issue under Dokuchie and Thomson’s Manitou Publishing company in 2014, featured another article

by Jake MacDonald detailing his experience and that of others being struck by lightning. It had indeed been an electrifying run for the pair but the time to pass the torch had arrived.

It started with beer and would end that way. Dokuchie was now a partner in the new local brewery that was growing rapidly and needed his full attention. In addition to his thriving photography business, Thomson was undertaking a new endeavour with a startup technology company. The “Parting Shot” for that issue, a rare selfie of Thomson watching a glorious sunset, was especially fitting.

“We never realized at the time that Stuff would have as much historic significance as it does,” Thomson said.

“It truly is a record of time captured in this community with great photos and design and great writing.

We wanted it to tell the good stories of Kenora.”

They both look at their time building Kenora Stuff with pride and are continually pleased with where it’s gone under new publisher Wake Marketing and its leaders Mike Greaves and Mike Newton.

“When we felt it was time to move on, we really thought about who a good choice would be to continue with it,” Dokuchie said. “Mike and Mike are doing a great job; we’re happy to see it’s in good hands. The legacy has continued.”

Taking the reins at top speed Greaves describes the timing for his transition into the editor/publisher role as the “perfect storm.” He said, “Rob and Tom were ready to move onto other things and our business was just starting to take off.” He adds, “When opportunity knocks you open the door.” It helped that they all knew one another through Kenora’s business networks. While he was new to publishing, he had a background in marketing and advertising as well as a good

understanding of Stuff’s client base that he had worked with in other ways. Both Dokuchie and Thomson provided support as he learned about the printing and publishing process.

Taking over to publish the 2015 summer issue, it was full steam ahead. “They had established a readership and client base that was working,” he said. “Our goal was to continue the tradition, be innovative, and methodically bring in our own design and writing flavours issue after issue.” This included adding a bi-annual winter issue, highlighting businesses and attractions in the off-season.

An ongoing focus is looking for ways to continue to engage readership. “There’s always that excitement – what’s in Stuff this year? People look forward to seeing Kenora Stuff out on the stands; we always want to deliver on that anticipation,” Greaves said. “Each year there’s some kind of opportunity to piggy back some storytelling – things like 50 years of the Lake of the Woods International Sailing Association regatta, Harbourfest’s 25th anniversary, Hockey Day in Canada, the explosion of arts in the community, the list goes on.”

The goal is to loop these happenings into the fabric of Stuff as much as possible. And sometimes, Greaves says, events – like say, a global pandemic – can force your hand. “This year is a prime example of how we always have to be open to evolve and change.”

The magazine has continued to be relevant through the rise of the Internet and other developments.

How will it fare through this?

“This year is like none other in Stuff’s history. It’s never been more important for the magazine to represent what and who Kenora is all about. Helping one another is also more important than ever.” Greaves said his team had to weigh whether or not to publish this year’s edition, with many of the advertisers either considered non-essential and closed, or struggling to keep operating without the usual local and seasonal traffic.

But they decided now was not the time to abandon the magazine or its importance to the community.

“Stuff is here for the local business community and always has been,” he said.

He adds, “The magazine is only as good as the businesses that are here in Kenora. When we get acknowledgement for a great issue, we know that Kenora Stuff wouldn’t be what it is without the outstanding businesses it features, and this year is no different.”

In closing, Greaves said, “I haven’t found another community that’s done what we’ve been able to do with Kenora Stuff because of our unique size and inclusive nature. It’s an honour to be a part of it.“

Since the first issue in 2001, Kenora Stuff has been extremely fortunate to receive support from so many local businesses.

We thought it would be fun to spotlight two of these businesses, who’ve been with Stuff since that very first issue. Both of these stores have changed addresses since these ads ran back in 2001, and one of them has even changed their name from Olympia/Waves to The Hardwear Company.

Other than the rollerblades, the product lines at both stores are probably pretty similar to what they were 20 years ago.

One thing that certainly hasn’t changed though, is the friendly and knowledgeable service that Mort and Steve have been providing to Kenora locals and visitors, since well before Kenora Stuff existed.

Matiowski FarMers Market — Northwestern Ontario’s largest market, the Matiowski Farmers’ Market, is back this summer. Featuring your favourite food vendors, follow the flow to a variety of fresh meats, locally grown fresh produce and delicious baked goods, dips and spreads. The market takes place every Wednesday under the Whitecap Pavilion from July 8 until September 9.

Drive-in Movie — What’s old is new again with Kenora’s newest warmer-weather activity: Drive-in Theatre at Mount Evergreen. The 30’ x 17’ inflatable screen will be based in the Ski Club parking lot and provide hours of movie pleasure. Movies are expected to run on weekends and special dates throughout the summer, featuring a variety of genres. Food service will be available from the chalet with delivery to your vehicle.

City beaChes — Kenora boasts five maintained beaches within the city.

Enjoy the scenic shores of Lake of the Woods, the rippling waves on the Winnipeg River and the peaceful ease of Rabbit Lake.

Anicinabe Park & Beach is located just south of Highway 17 East. At the intersection by Canadian Tire, turn onto Mikana Way. Anicinabe Park offers a full-service campground with over 100 sites for trailers and tents. The public beach has a protected swimming area with a wooden walkway crossing from shore to shore. Anicinabe Park loosely translated from Ojibway means ¨gathering place¨ so gather your friends and family and join in some summer fun.

Coney Island Beach is located in Kenora Bay, minutes from downtown but is only accessible by water. This beach is worth the trip and one of the must-dos this summer. With a wonderful, westerly view of Lake of the Woods, Coney Island Beach offers a large field for soccer, Frisbee or games of choice.

Keewatin Beach is located in the neighbourhood of Keewatin, just south of Highway 17 West on Keewatin Beach Road. This beach is nestled in

between residential properties and offers a wonderful view of Lake of the Woods. Relax in the sunshine along the sandy beach or rest and read in the shady areas available. Peacefulness, gentle waves and fun in the sun are what Keewatin Beach offers.

Garrow Park & Beach is located on Rabbit Lake, just north of downtown at the end of Birchwood Crescent. The park is connected to the Rabbit Lake Trail System with a paved accessible path along the water’s edge. Kenora Rowing Club is situated here and regularly hosts rowing competitions throughout the summer.

Norman Park & Beach is located just south of Highway 17 West at the Lake-Vu Co-op intersection in the neighbourhood of Norman. Not only do you have a wonderful view of the action on the Lake of the Woods but you also have the added pleasure of having the Splash Park, Canadian Pacific Railway Museum and Dairy Queen all adjacent to the park. Enjoy a splash, an ice cream cone, a history lesson on CP Rail or watch the float planes come and go from Safety Bay.

boating — Kenora is North America’s Premier Boating Destination for good reason. Lake of the Woods is a haven to be explored; a jewel to be discovered. One day of cruising around the lake with family and friends can be the highlight of the summer.

Ask around for quiet beaches to picnic or islands worth exploring. Be sure to prepare yourselves with plenty of food and drinks because it may be a long day of pleasure before making your way home. If you don’t have your own boat, grab a group of your favourite people and rent a pontoon boat or hire a lake tour guide to enjoy the waters and sunshine.

trails — Local trail systems are ever-evolving and weave through urban landscape, quiet wetlands and wilderness, varying structures, terrain, distances and usages. Here are the five awaiting your exploration: Mink Bay Trail, Rabbit Lake Trail System, Rat Portage Urban Trail, Waa’say’ Gaa Boo (Tunnel Island Trail), Vernon Nature Area.

Fishing — Lake of the Woods is famous for its fishing. The vast size of the lake allows for boundless opportunities to experiment with your gear and skills. With a variety of species to fish walleye, northern pike, muskie, small or largemouth bass or lake trout - drop a line and enjoy the challenge. Winter aCtiVities skiing — Mount Evergreen Ski Club’s downhill venue boasts 11 runs, two t-bar lifts and a terrain park. The Ski Club offers equipment rentals for all ages and sizes and offers individual or group downhill skiing and snowboarding lessons. Day-use and seasonal passes are available on-site. The licensed chalet offers a retreat from the hills with warm drinks and snacks.

At the base of Mount Evergreen, Kenora Nordic Trails consists of 20 kilometers of exceptional trails. Three kilometers are solar lit for night skiing. Day and seasonal passes are available online or at the Mount Evergreen Ski Club chalet. skikenora.com

rabbit lake skating trail & rink — Coming off its inaugural winter in 2019, the skating trail and rink on Rabbit Lake will be back in 2020. The kilometrelong skating loop circles a large cleared and flooded rink. The trail is maintained all winter long and is free for all to enjoy. For a game of pick-up, bring your nets and a few pucks; likely there will be others to play with as well. Skate-tying shacks are right nearby for wind-protected seating. Access the rink and trail at the east end of the lake on Rabbit Lake Road and park on the shoreline or the plowed parking area on the lake itself. The Bunny Street bus stop is right across the street.

paddling — Grab your favourite vessel, find some water and propel yourself along shorelines, through channels, into bays and onto beaches.

Be it canoe, kayak or paddleboard, it doesn’t get much better than exploring our tranquil waters while dipping or dragging your toes in the water as you paddle along. In the right places you’ll likely come across more wildlife - like turtles and birds - than other people, creating a cool connection to our natural friends.

Walking & hiking — Our most popular summer trails, including Tunnel Island, Vernon Nature Trails, Mink Bay and Rushing River, offer varying degrees of winter wilderness walking and hiking exploration and challenge. The tranquillity is unmatched under a fresh blanket of snow. Parking is available nearby each venue and pack a lunch for a picnic along the route.

iCe Fishing — If you have the gear to get out on Lake of the Woods, take a ride south on the ice road from Kenora and find walleye on the many humps and reefs scattered around the lake. The central section of the lake has the best population of fish, in the area known as the Manitou. If you’re interested in fishing some of the smaller lakes around town you can use the Ontario Fish ON-Line website to see a listing of the fish species in each body of water.

splash park — The Kenora Rotary Splash Park in Norman Park features a lake theme which includes playful elements such as boats, animals, trees, fish, birds, etc. The splash park is inclusive and accessible.

tubing — Introduced at Mount Evergreen a few years ago, the tube runs have continued to grow in popularity. A great winter activity for the entire family, now with two parallel runs, tubers can enjoy tubing by the hour or by the day. Passes are available in the Mount Evergreen chalet. Helmets for children are recommended.

the Muse — The multi-award winning Lake of the Woods Museum - one of the “coolest little museums in Canada” - and the Douglas Family Art Centre seek to promote understanding of and respect for the cultures and heritage of the Lake of the Woods area, and to engage a diverse community in discovery and learning. The Muse offers inspired exhibits and exhibitions, quality programming, and enriching experiences.

On Exhibit this summer: A Dip of a Paddle & The Stroke of a Pen: Maps of Lake of the Woods - The earliest known maps of Lake of the Woods date to the 1700s when the French pushed into the wilds of northwestern Ontario in search of the Western Sea. Since then explorers, surveyors, cartographers, hydrographers, and lake residents have tried to accurately depict the wonder of the lake in the two-dimensional format of a map. Here we present a selection of maps of our Lake.

Whisky Scrip by artist Heather Shillinglaw - Edmonton-based Métis artist Heather Shillinglaw’s installation retells her family’s oral history of her great-greatgrandfather John “Old Man Jack” Norris, who, according to family stories, contracted Indigenous and Métis women to transport whiskey on Red River Carts, disguised as homesteading supplies. Shillinglaw’s beaded and quilted hide map of the Carlton Trail traces these journeys from Fort Garry to Fort Edmonton, entangled with the issuance of Métis scrip and the impacts of this smuggled alcohol. On exhibit until August 31.

Cassandra uses her personal history, as well as collective stories from her many relations in the stories she tells. Each piece is either dedicated to her loved ones or are pieces which were gifted to (and on loan from) her loved ones. On exhibit until September 5.

BUILDING DREAM S

2020 has been and will continue to be a different year for all of us. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and play. The good news is that fishing is an activity we can do safely in the beautiful outdoors. As restrictions continue to lift and our personal bubbles expand, fishing in our area can be a great source of friendly and community camaraderie. Take advantage of the fishing opportunities around us by trying some of my favourite activities throughout the year.

Try a Kayak this Summer If being outdoors and getting some exercise go hand in hand, a kayak might be a good investment for you.

Around the Kenora area there are countless smaller lakes that host excellent fishing and don’t offer launch access for traditional boats. You can travel small rivers to get to back country lakes, get under low bridges and have the ability to sneak up on fish. You are able to access water that you simply can’t with a boat.

My wife Shelby and I picked up a pair of kayaks a couple of years back and we use them quite a bit during the summer, on the small lake that we live on and on some smaller bass lakes surrounding Kenora. Many of the smaller lakes around town have excellent bass fishing, including Rabbit Lake, Morgan Lake and several others.

There are also some really good bass lakes around Lake of the Woods that are accessible by portage trail, especially on the Western Peninsula and the Aulneau Peninsula.

On most of these smaller bodies of water, bass are plentiful and see little fishing pressure. I usually pack two rods and a small assortment of tackle, including some topwater lures and soft plastics. In addition to bass, obviously there are some great walleye, trout and pike opportunities to paddle to as well.

If you own or prefer a canoe, these vessels can be used for accessing these areas as well. The main reason I mention kayaks is that they are becoming more popular with anglers because some are now being designed specifically for fishing, but a canoe can serve you the same access to great fishing.

Stocked Trout in the Fall Around Kenora we have several smaller lakes that are stocked with brook trout, rainbow trout and splake.

These are lakes that did not previously have a sportfish population but had the right habitat for trout.

Not native to the Kenora area, the fish in these lakes do not spawn but they provide a great opportunity for anglers to catch some unique and beautifully coloured fish that are also great to eat.

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has an informative website for anglers called Fish ON-Line that provides information about all of the stocked lakes in the province, including a map showing where they are and the actual stocking numbers. Fish ON-Line also includes a list of known fish species in each body of water in the province; it’s a great tool.

Fall fishing is good for these stocked trout because the cooling water attracts them into the shallow water along the shoreline. Anglers can have success fishing from shore, from a small boat or paddled vessel.

Artificial baits like small spoons, inline spinners and little Rapala lures all work well. These trout all love live bait so if you really want to get serious about catching a few, try rigging a small jig with half a night crawler about two feet below a bobber.

Ice Road Truckin’ for Perch and Walleye If you grew up in Kenora you have probably been ice fishing down the ice road on Lake of the Woods at some point. If ice fishing hasn’t been part of your winter activities in the past but you have interest in it, the ice road offers access to plenty of good fishing spots out on the lake.

Twisting and turning all the way from Kenora to the Northwest Angle and the Minnesota side of the lake, the ice road heading south from Kenora goes by some great places to catch walleye and perch throughout the winter. Anglers should be looking for main lake humps and points and focus their efforts fishing in 25 – 35 feet of water most days.

Before crossing over Treaty Island, the first island the road portages over, there are some popular spots to catch fish. As you head farther down the lake more hotspots become available, especially around Whiskey Island and Rope Island, located south of 12 Mile Portage.

The classic jig and minnow is the most popular tackle offering. It always works but if you want to get a little more creative, a 1/4 ounce Buck-Shot Spoon tipped with a minnow head is all I ever use for ice fishing walleye and perch anymore.

A few things you should know if you’re headed out on the ice road. Never drill holes in the road. It can cause it to flood and create big headaches for the folks that plow the road. If they catch you fishing on the road, you’ll hear about it. Always move off the road to fish. As far as choosing spots, there are phone apps like Navionics or Humminbird’s Fish Smart available that offer great mapping of the lake so you can easily find ideal places to fish without having to have a separate GPS unit. I pretty well just use my phone for navigation purposes out there on the ice. If you are new to the lake, it has current moving through it so there are some dangerous areas out there with bad ice. Sticking close to the road is a good way to stay safe until you learn your way around.

Shallow Spring Lake Trout Throughout most of the year, lake trout are found in deep water. They prefer cold water more than any other species of fish in our area so they are often tough to find and catch during the summer months. In the spring, when water temperatures are cool, from the time the ice goes out until into June, lake trout can be found in shallow water where they are usually aggressive and taking advantage of the opportunity to pillage the shallows for food.

While ice fishing for lake trout is good, in my opinion spring the best time to fish for them. Most of the trout lakes in the Kenora district are remote and beautiful with gin clear water and pine covered shorelines. The same can be said for most bodies of water, but trout lakes have a specialness to them.

If you have access to a boat, the options for catching lake trout are plentiful. From Whitefish Bay and Clearwater Bay on Lake of the Woods to Silver Lake, Dryberry Lake and a whole assortment of smaller waters, there are good options for catching numbers of fish or bigger trout. The bigger waters tend to hold bigger fish if that interests you. If you don’t have a boat, fishing from shore is an option in the spring on waters that permit the use of fish parts for bait.

Just be aware that bait is not permitted on all waters so check the OMNRF Fishing Regulations Summary.

One of my favourite ways to catch trout as a kid was shore fishing. We used to cast out a piece of belly meat from a sucker that we would catch in a creek on our way to the trout lake. Hook the sucker meat onto a treble hook and let it sit on the bottom. Lay your rod down on the rocks, with the spool open and then tie your line around a can or bottle that will be pulled over if a trout swims off with the bait.

My Dad used to call it “beer-canning”. He never drank beer when we went fishing but I’m sure the name came from people who enjoyed that activity; I can see the appeal.

If you get out in a boat, trolling with spoons or minnow imitating crankbaits is a great way to cover water and make contact with lake trout. Smaller trout are good eating but these unique fish are slow growing so please release the big ones.

The fishing options surrounding Kenora are world-class and every season offers different opportunities. So, don’t be afraid to get out there and be creative with different species and new places to fish. Good luck and have fun.
