IN SIOUX NARROWSNESTOR FALLS

ARTISTS IN THE PARK

Artists in the Park is a great little event when art and nature blend uniquely together. While it started in 2021 as a way to safely put on a distances art show, it has continued to grow and has become an annual tradition.

Artists in the Park features a 1.2 kilometer easy walking loop throughout the beautiful Sioux Narrows Provincial Park with artists set up intermittently along the way.

It is a great opportunity to check out some amazing local talent, in an inspiring venue.

This event coincides with the Bassin’ For Bucks fishing tournament, which makes for an action-packed fun weekend in Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls.

MOOSE N' FIDDLE MUSIC FESTIVAL

NESTOR FALLS

And, 2-3-4… The first known music festival was the Pythian Games, a precursor of the Olympics, which was held from the late sixth century BC at the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. A general celebration of all things beautiful, it included a day of musical competitions. Fast forward to more modern times and music festivals can be found in small and large centres across the globe – from Glastonbury in Pilton, Somerset to SXSW in Austin, Texas to Osheaga in Montreal, Quebec.

A little closer to home, the Moose N’ Fiddle Music Festival showcases singer-songwriters, fiddlers, and live performances from some of Canada’s finest musicians; alongside of good eats from regional food trucks, simple pleasures made by artisans, crafters and growers (think jars of pickles & preserves), and fresh handcrafted ales and lagers from Lake of the Woods Brewing Company.

This “cool little festival at the lake” offers a chance to hear and hum along to well-known covers and lesser-known pieces that might join the roster of your favourites. Festivals are

synonymous with summertime traditions that draw on music from numerous cultures, time periods and styles. Save the date, mark August 23 & 24 on your calendar and make your way to Nestor Falls to listen and tap your toes to the sounds of Chekhov’s Dog by the always fun and irreverent Fu Fu Chi Chi Choir: “I’m going to ramble, I’m going to ramble, gamble upon this weathered sky, this weathered sky… oh, yes I’m going.”

Perhaps in part because of history and happenstance, festivals have joined people in music-making across time and place for hundreds of years. And, after a very long intermission with a two-year pandemic-caused hiatus and then a crushing summer storm in 2022 – what a joy it is to be able to be a part of a community, once again! Let’s keep the history and herstory of hootenanny’s alive – with the hootin’ and hollerin’ that is sure to be found at this “cool little festival at the lake”. It all happens under a canopy of tall pines and along the water’s edge. We hope to see you at the Moose N’ Fiddle in 2024… and, 5-6-7-8.

These historic routes have been contributing to paddling memory-making for years, and have recently been travelled by a professional to ensure they are accurate and up to date. For anyone who is hoping to paddle this summer or looking to try out a new route, these maps are available at all of the regional visitor information centres, as well as online at snnf.ca.

SIOUX NARROWS

ASPEN TRAIL 

This 4.5km trail runs deep into the Ontario forest where the sound of traffic stops and the gentle sounds of the forest awaken your senses. The gentle slopes of this path make for an easier journey, but the distance traveled makes you feel detached from it all.

FERN VALLEY/LOOKOUT POINT 

This relaxed 4km trail has an optional lookout loop overlooking the lake and beach. The summer ferns, gentle hills, and tall trees help you create a great memory no matter the season, and the lake itself is perfect for swimming! You may want to grab a day pass and go for a swim at the sandy beach!

NESTOR

FALLS

RED PINE 

This maze of trails takes you through such varying landscapes and views from thick red pines, massive boulders, and lake views. The optional long 3km loop around the perimeter is lets you see every view, and takes you deep into the forest. You will get back to the trailhead with many memories and a smile.

BOREAL 

This trail’s long distance, steep hills, and obstacles make for a very challenging hike or ride but with incredible vistas. There is a shortcut that makes a smaller loop, but it still carries the signature difficulties. Either way you choose, it’s a memorable and beautiful trail any season.

For more information on Trails in Sioux NarrowsNestor Falls please visit: snnf.ca/trails

Our trails are great… but don’t just take it from us. Here are what some of local resident trail users have to say.

SIOUX NARROWS: KAREN TABOR

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE TRAILS?

Four generations of my family have enjoyed the Sioux Narrows trails since their inception. The trails provide an opportunity to get some exercise and appreciate nature. Trail walks have made me more observant of seasonal changes and the life cycles of plants and animals (especially insects) that respond to these changes.

NESTOR FALLS: BILL POPE

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE TRAILS?

The hiking and walking trails are a beautiful way to get your daily exercise. The fact that they're off the highway and sheltered from the wind is a huge bonus.

Its displays house a variety of ecological and cultural information about Sportfishing on Lake of the Woods and how it has shaped a strong element of our community culture. While here you won’t want to miss the summer speakers series of events, and the fun and interactive Northern Nature Exchange program space in conjunction with Science North. Once you have explored the Centre, we encourage you to enjoy the recently upgraded park space that surround it at Sioux Narrows Government Dock.

4 SEASON COMMUNITY RECREATION FACILITY
