SMALL TOWNS, DEEP ROOTS

The communities of Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls bring northern charm and historic preservation together with cultural tourism and entrepreneurial spirit. The corduroy roads that once led prospectors, settlers and loggers to a hub of mills and mines in the 1900s now bring travelers and tourists to camps, lodges and lakefront cottages. The Township hides its treasures away on scenic back roads that transport visitors to simpler times. Tuck yourself away in a backwoods eco-friendly cabin or bring the whole family to visit a retreat style campground that is jam-packed with outdoor fun.

The streetscapes of Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls feature oldworld general stores, “mom and pop” eateries, and family-owned and operated retail shops. The towns remain the commercial hub and the legacy of community betterment can still be seen and experienced. Here in Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls, you will find arts festivals, fish fry’s and BBQs, steak nights, and community gardens. From the past to the present – a true north spirit and pride of place has been self-evident, dotting the landscape with cultural beacons and filling up personal calendars with community events. Today, tiny studios welcome visiting artists from near and far away. The Bridge & Falls Creative Residency invites artists to take a deep

dive into their artistic practices: giving them the much-needed time and space to change and to re-arrange. In Sioux Narrows, you will find a tiny floating studio, and with ON THE WATER and ON THE ROCK in Nestor Falls, artists can retreat and further develop their art form. Fueling their discoveries and experiences is a close-knit community…ready to share a story by a campfire or cook-up a shore lunch for a memorable evening, filled with food and good company. The tiny studios pay homage to the great outdoors and the earthy elements that have such a special hold, here in the Canadian Shield: the rocks, the woods, and the lakes.

Synonymous with revolutionary thinking and a throwback to small town culinary inspiration, artistic expression, and safe spaces for settlers: Fairs, festivals, farmer’s markets, and forts are behind a modern renaissance. Discover healthy foods, sparkling waters, and roller coaster rides with family and friends. Take a selfie and post it on Facebook. Or pull out the Instamatic and bring home a collection of beautiful moments – all in living colour. Relax. Rejuvenate. Recharge. Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls, here you can: Experience two small towns with deep roots.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Did you know that most of the Township of Sioux NarrowsNestor Falls is located in a dark sky area? Dark sky locations are areas where there is little to no light pollution. Why does this matter? Well, this makes for some of the best star gazing and Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) viewing!

When one is at a large town or city, building and street lights can obscure your chance of seeing these natural wonders. However, when you are at a dark sky location, such as Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls, and the conditions are right, you can observe constellations, the Milky Way, meteor showers and the dancing skies of the Aurora Borealis. And, you don’t need any special equipment to do so!

here are a few tips

1. Check the weather forecast to ensure clear skies;

2. Try to go out when there is little to no moonlight. The moon, especially when it’s full or near to, brightens the sky and can make it difficult or impossible to see the Aurora and many of the stars;

3. Similar to an outdoor adventure during the day, plan accordingly. If you are venturing away from your home, cottage or campground, tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back (and, be familiar with the area you are going so as to avoid hazards, getting lost and so you don’t trespass or disturb anyone);

4. Make sure you dress accordingly, bring extra clothing (it can get cold at night, even in the summer), bring water (or hot chocolate), a snack, a headlamp or flashlight, some insect repellent and perhaps a folding chair or blanket to sit on;

5. If you are a photography enthusiast, try to take a photo;

6. If you do see the Aurora and it appears to move slowly at first, keep watch, as it can spontaneously become very active; and,

7. The Aurora normally appears to rise above the Northern horizon, there are times of intensified activity when it can be seen in all directions, and even directly above.

Remember, Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls and the Lake of the Woods area is not only spectacular to see during the day, our outdoors are amazing at night too!

A Gathering Place

Just beyond the borders of the Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls is a place of great history. If you are visiting our small Township – make plans to extend your stay and take a step back in time. At Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung, you are about to explore over 8,000 years of recurring use of habitation through the eyes of the Ojibway people.

“The Ojibway people of Rainy River First Nations welcome you to one of the most significant centres of early habitation and ceremonial burial in Canada. Kay-NahChi-Wah-Nung, the Place of the Long Rapids, is a place of outstanding beauty and spirituality.

The Centre offers interpretive tours and galleries, a collections space, a gift

shop that showcases artwork by local Indigenous artists, and a restaurant that serves traditional Ojibway cuisine. Visitors are encouraged to learn about Ojibway history, language, geography, culture and traditions.

Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1970, its importance has been acknowledged for generations by all cultures and peoples who have lived, travelled, and admired the majestic Manidoo Ziibi or Spirit River (Rainy River), The Place of the Long Rapids has deep cultural and spiritual meaning to Indigenous peoples throughout North America. The Ojibway people of the Rainy River First Nations are the guardians of this rich heritage, a legacy that has been passed on through the

generations and will continue through our grandchildren.

Located only 65km from the headwaters of the Mississippi River, this was the centre of a vibrant continent-wide trading network. Here, people gathered to trade, share, celebrate, and mourn.” 1

Turtle Island - where’s that? Turtle Island might sound like an exotic island far away in the Caribbean Sea, but it’s actually what some Indigenous people call the continent of North America, while others, such as the Ojibway, use it to refer to the whole world.

The name Turtle Island comes from First Nations folklore. Many storytellers share a creation story and it is widely believed that the turtle is part of a story about how everything came to be.

Did you know that many folktales all over the world, feature a turtle? In African folklore, the turtle is the smartest animal. In Chinese mythology, the turtle is a very powerful symbol. And, in Tahiti, the turtle is the lord of the oceans.

Honouring and sharing stories and legends brings all of us closer together. The communities of Sioux Narrows-Nestor

Falls welcome you to the traditional territory of the Ojibway people. Here, we all follow in the footsteps of their ancestors.

“It’s good to know that Turtle Island was occupied by First Nations people since time immemorial. We’ve always been here,” says Yerxa. Allan Yerxa is the land and resources coordinator for Couchiching First Nation and was instrumental in the development and creation of the Canadian First Nations pre-European contact map of Turtle Island.

We encourage all visitors to learn more about the Indigenous people who call Canada home: discover their great traditions, language and cultural ways by attending community feasts and Pow Wows! Let your explorations bring to light the interconnectedness of all people and all things.
