If you would like to go for a hike, there are woodland trails with picture perfect outlooks in Nestor Falls and Sioux Narrows. Pack your golf clubs and take in the natural wonders at the 9-hole White Moose Golf Course, accessible by land and by water. Here you can wile away unhurried hours, throwing in your line and setting your hook – while fishing for five freshwater species…walleye, large-mouth bass, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and the ever elusive muskie!

LET’S STAND together

ADVENTURE DIFFERENTLY! For time immemorial, stands of white birch trees, old-growth canopies with white pines and red pines, along with the many fungi and flora on the forest floors have been a shelter in place for woodland creatures, birds of prey, and all of humanity. Today, the words shelter in place take on a new meaning and context as people, everywhere, navigate new uncharted waters with the coronavirus outbreak and COVID-19. In the spirit of resiliency and with all that we can muster, people have accepted the circumstances and risen to the challenges. It has not been easy.

Our small Township hides its treasures on scenic back roads that transport visitors and residents alike to simpler times. The very same corduroy roads that once led prospectors, settlers and loggers to a hub of mills in the early 1900s now bring travelers and tourists to camps, lodges and lakefront cottages. From the past to the present, a true northern spirit has prevailed. And, never has it been more important to adventure differently than it is today!

In the summer of 2020, we might not be gathering in large numbers watching fireworks illuminate the night sky but we can still stand together, while staying apart. In small numbers, we can sing Oh, Canada on July 1st from the safety and comfort of our own backyard! We can launch canoes and kayaks and enjoy an

invigorating or leisurely paddle on the many freshwater lakes, right here on the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods. If you have little people in your life, find a sandy beach, pack a picnic lunch, dip your feet in the water, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Not everything is cancelled,

How to have fun with nature photograhy FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Photography is accessible to almost everyone. You don’t need a fancy camera either. A cell phone will do just fine and in some cases rivals the quality that can be achieved with a very good camera. And, it’s an activity that can be enjoyed and fun for all ages.

Nature photography is not only vast but filled with interesting subjects. And what better place to start or continue to practice than Lake of the Woods! Teaming with beautiful landscapes, sunsets over the lake, wildlife, fish, insects and plants, the opportunities to take interesting and beautiful photos are endless. In most instances, you don’t even have to leave your own yard, resort or campsite.

Some tips to keep things interesting

Levels - try getting down or up to a different level to view something, like taking a picture of an insect from the ground level, or your dog from his/her eye level, or from above or below something, like a tree or flower.

Experiment - try different angles, play with light, take a silhouette instead of clear shot, or take close-up instead of wide angle.

Some activities to try with the kids or the whole family Colours – have the child/children look for things of a certain colour and photograph them.

ABC’s - have the child/children look for things that start with each letter of the alphabet and photograph them.

Starts with… – ask the child/children to look for objects that start with a certain letter and photograph them.

Perspective - instead of photographing something at or above the water’s edge, try photographing your subject’s reflection in the water.

Leading lines - use lines to draw the eye toward something in your composition; like a log with turtles sunning themselves on it or a power line with birds sitting on it.

Scavenger Hunt - create a list of items to search for and photograph. Be sure to add a few things that are a challenge. And, maybe have some prizes for everyone at the end of the game.

If you love the outdoors - and who doesn’t?! - photography is a great way to explore and preserve moments and memories.

Print your photos and add them to an album, create a photo book or make cards to send to your family and friends. Most of all, have fun!

LIFE’S A WALK IN THE PARK AT SIOUX NARROWS & CALIPER LAKE PROVINCIAL PARKS With fun trails, beautiful beaches, playgrounds, and BBQ pits these two gems have everything you need for a fun camping adventure. Both Parks are located within the Municipal Boundaries of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls and are close to all community amenities, yet they are far enough away to really get that camping outdoors in nature feeling. They are both smaller parks with wide-open spaces to enjoy and explore.

Caliper Lake Park is nestled beneath towering old-growth red and white pine trees, along the shores of Caliper Lake.

Shoreline Campsites provide campers with a secluded camping feeling that one would expect while back woods camping, yet they are close to all amenities. The park has its own set of trails, as well as paddleboard and kayak rentals for those who wish to explore the water.

Sioux Narrows Provincial Park is located on Lake of the Woods with a boat launch that provides direct access to the lake for those who like to paddle, boat, and fish. A long sand beach and diving platform provides campers and visitors a wonderful opportunity to swim and lounge in the lake.

Day pass permits are available for only $12.25 while camping rates start at $47.46 per night.

WHAT’S COOKING IN YOUR KITCHEN? Everyone has a story. For so many people around the world, the spring of 2020 has ushered in shelter in place orders and a multitude of new rules. The world has stayed home to protect. Seemingly overnight, we have all become foodies – cooking and baking to feed ourselves and our loved ones.

Front line workers are ensuring that grocery store shelves stay stocked. Long haul truck drivers, cashiers, cleaners, growers and farmers are working around the clock to ensure that home pantries are fully stocked. Pots and pans are being put to good use. And, in meeting the moment, cherished recipes from our Oma, Kookum and Baba have taken centre stage.

There is something special about the tendency to gather around food. The idea that food emerges from tradition is not to

be dismissed. These traditions are a way to keep us connected to our identities.

Food brings people together. Diversity is celebrated. Seasons bring foods native to a specific place to the forefront of our imaginations. Here is northwestern Ontario – you can follow the span of time and space in the foods that you forage for: from morels and fiddleheads in the spring to blueberries at the summer’s end.

It might seem that enjoying food and drink in the company of good friends, is a light year away. And, in a nod to our #truenorth, we thought it would be fun to share what puts rural and remote northwestern Ontario on the gastronomic map - bringing the bounty of our freshwaters and farmer’s fields to a table near you. In the language of the Ojibway people, who walk here now and came before the settlers to this land, I say

A Sacred Trust I AM A SETTLER I am a settler. I live, work and play in the traditional territory of the Ojibway people. As a settler, I am grateful for the opportunity to meet here and I thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land – for thousands of years. Long before immigrants came to this land, Indigenous people lived here being stewards of natural and built environs.

My personal connection to a people and a place has allowed me to grow as an individual. I recognize and support the need for larger truth telling and reconciliation efforts. In this acknowledgement, I open up space with reverence and respect. What do the words ‘A Sacred Trust’ evoke?

For me – it ignites passions and truths learned from artists across Canada. I have worked in many different spaces and I have had the privilege to be in the good company of many, who I now call friends. Memories have been created around thoughtful exchanges at kitchen tables, coffee houses and neighbourhood eateries. And, at times the conversations have been eye-opening, jaw-dropping and crushing. The most vivid of stories have led me on a path, with a solemn promise, to always listen.

A sacred trust invites the participation of more than one. How can we learn from each other? How can we move forward – seeing the world we live in and doing everything we can, as settlers, to imagine and build an even better one? I hope the idea of a sacred trust inspires you to think and to act. I encourage each and every one of us to foster new friendships and to carve out time and space to walk in someone else’s moccasin.

This summer The Northern Ontario Sport Fishing Centre had hoped to present a summer full of fun and interesting “fishing themed” workshops and seminars aimed to engage our guests with new perspectives and enhanced knowledge of fishing above and beyond the lake experience. However, with the current restrictions on gatherings we have decided to offer a more limited series of talks delivered on-line, but with the same goals in mind. CANOE ROUTES The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls has partnered with the City of Kenora in creating a series of Canoe Routes throughout the region. These fun filled paddling adventures range from single day outings to multi-day/night excursions. If paddling a new route is something you are looking for, these routes are sure to have something for every interest and skill level.

Printable Canoe Route Guides can be found at snnf.ca/canoeroutes One of these canoe routes takes you to Kakagi Lake in Nestor Falls. Kakagi is an Ojibway word meaning “blackbird” or Crow or Raven. Kakagi Lake has also come to be known as Crow Lake.

IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD WHEN EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN Are you renting a small cabin in the woods? Or perhaps you set up camp at one of our premier destinations – tucked away down dirt roads and off the beaten path. We recognize that holidaymaking might feel a bit different this summer. What our small Township has to offer unapologetically, is an abundance of space for physical distancing. It is in our nature to gather, to tell stories, and to enjoy a good belly laugh around a campfire, as the sun sets on another fun filled day, here on the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods.

So, with that in mind – we wanted to explore the wonders of the backyard. What games can a small family or group of friends play? What activities can bring us together, while still staying a safe distance apart, not socially but physically? How can we build memories to last a lifetime during COVID-19? Kitchen Party STANDING TOGETHER WHILE STAYING APART Since the first note was hummed at the Moose n’ Fiddle Music Festival, the idea that music can happen absolutely anywhere was at the heart of this “cool little festival at the lake”. Over the years, the numbers have grown from a few hundred people under a canopy of tall pines and along the water’s edge, in Nestor Falls, Ontario, Canada to more than one thousand people who celebrate the sights and sounds of the Festival at the summer’s end. And, with the green light from Mayor & Council, the stage was set to do it all over again, this year on August 21 & 22. All that changed with the outbreak of the coronavirus and the onset of a global health pandemic, the likes of which the world has not seen before.

With grace and kindness, the musical acts agreed to come back in 2021. The rental dates for tents, lights and audio equipment has been moved. Crafters, sponsors, and volunteers have been asked to come back next summer. For now, a small single lightbulb stays lit on stage, a ghost light is on, until we can all come back safely to sing, dance and hum along! What does that mean for the artists and the audiences who have put the Festival on its feet?

In ordinary times, it would mean: a very, long pause. But these are extraordinary times and we wanted to meet the moment.

So…we have assembled a small group of the who’s who of Moose n’ Fiddle past and present. We will mark COVID-19 with an abridged version of the Moose n’ Fiddle Music Festival, an online event hosted by 89.5 The Lake, with links on the moosenfiddle.ca website.

On Saturday, August 22nd, we invite you to continue to shelter in place, to stay home and be safe while enjoying the sights and sounds of an online KITCHEN PARTY. In the spirit of standing together, while staying apart, this Kitchen Party will be 90-minutes in length and it will kick off at 8pm. Say hello to Siouxperboat, Belle Plaine, Adrian Sutherland, Fu Fu Chi Chi Choir and The Slocan Ramblers! Our narrators will be Wanda Kabel and Denise Lysak. This KITCHEN PARTY will be in the cloud and we invite you to join us.

ARTSFESTIVAL Dear Sioux Narrows Arts Festival Patrons, After much deliberation and discussion, the Sioux Narrows Arts Council has made the decision to cancel the 2020 Sioux Narrows Arts Festival.

Considering the most recent government and health unit COVID-19 restrictions, our festival would not be able to meet the guidelines for social distancing for the artists or the general public. Protecting everyone’s health and safety is our primary concern.

We are saddened that we must cancel this year’s festival. The Sioux Narrows Arts Festival is a summer highlight that many look forward to. The Sioux Narrows Arts Council will strive to offer safe opportunities for local artists to create, collaborate and market their artwork, as well as for community members to continue to enjoy new arts activities. The 2020 registered artists will be featured on our website with their links, making it easy to connect and discover special handcrafted treasures. Regular updates can be followed on our social media. We will miss seeing everyone. Stay safe and healthy!

SHARING OUR STORIES IN THIS YEAR OF PAUSE DENISE JOHANSEN

Sioux Narrows Arts Council Member, Denise Johansen, has been selling cottage decor creations for the past seven years. Denise recalls her first show, when she was nervous that birch bark mirrors and picture frames would not sell. “People were buying them up so quickly. My Aunt Cory and I could not keep up with the sales,” she said. Each season Denise comes up with something new and unique. Due to the COVID-19 “stay at home” restrictions, Denise is not at her cabin in Sioux Narrows. Not only does she miss the lake life, but the lake is where her basic supplies like birch sticks are sourced. Denise is adapting her artwork this year by using cedar boards and locally sourced materials.

Since 2011, the Festival has become a cherished August long-weekend tradition for Larry Easton to showcase his rustic furniture along side the photography of his wife, Wanda Kabel-Easton. “We enjoy the opportunity to connect and reconnect with the community, event volunteers, fellow artists, returning customers, family and friends,” he reported. Larry says that taking a few days off from his busy carpentry business to participate in the festival is relaxing and rewarding. “I get the chance to shift focus to the furniture component of my business, as well as engage with fellow creators, and appreciate their work.” Covid-19 has Larryʼs creative ideas and plans in a holding pattern for now. “I will be ready and eager for the festival in 2021!”

SHEHAWEH TREASURES Jim Larson became a volunteer with the Sioux Narrows Arts Council in 1969, working as a judge, Arts Council President and instructor. He moved to an island on Whitefish Bay year round in 1994, and it was there that he collected the aged roots, knots and driftwood that inspired the formation of each detailed carving. Jim’s very first exhibition in the 1995 Sioux Narrows Festival was just the beginning of many more shows and awards from across Canada and the United States. Now Jim spends his summers on a houseboat, but until travel bans are lifted, he is at home in Missouri completing carvings for clients in Austria and Germany. “I remember the old days - our large base of volunteers, the excitement the Arts Festival generated in Sioux Narrows, and the pride that was put into the show. It is good to see that same pride continues today.”

BAHDE Connie Fadden has designed and created unique childrenʼs clothing and kitchen linens for over 30 years. A long time artisan at the Sioux Narrows Arts Festival, she and her daughters Kassandra and April have developed a regular clientele for their Bahde custom clothing and home goods line. You can’t miss their endless variety of colourful items for sale and the line up of happy customers waiting their turn to chat. The Bahde ladies enjoy the friendly and welcoming atmosphere at the Sioux Narrows show. “We love that it is local and we can connect with everyone,” Connie said. This year, Connie, Kassandra and April are missing the summer people, and the usual hustle and bustle of a busy season.
