President's Message GARTH COLLIER As I write this President’s Message, we have had a few frost-covered mornings. Winter is certainly on its way and will likely be firmly “locked in” when you receive this issue of the Area News. After a warm and extended autumn season, I welcome the gifts that winter brings—the first magical snowfalls, the slow, complex freezing over of the lakes and the sun’s intense reflection off of the bejewelled snow.

However, all is not as it seems. Current research tells Garth Collier us that autumn and winter temperatures are warmer than ever. Lake ice forms later and spring thaw comes earlier thus reducing the lake ice season. The thickness of the ice is also diminished. The result is a complex chain reaction that impacts the freshwater ecosystem. Climate change is the bogeyman that brings with it warmer average water temperature, reduced oxygen levels, decreased fish habitat and, in general, a wide variety of stressors leading to algal blooms and eutrophication.

Our allies at the International Institute for Sustainability and Development/Experimental Lakes (IISD-ELA) and the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation (LOWWSF) are there to help us in our understanding of the current state of our watershed. For more detailed scientific information, feel free to access these valuable resources. The research is recognized internationally and specifically focuses on the Lake of the Woods region. information session for property owners. We are also engaged with the Ministry of Transportation to ensure we have the most current and accurate information. In a recent conversation with a representative from the Ministry, it was agreed that seasonal residents were at a disadvantage when meetings were scheduled during the “off season” and in an inconvenient location. We agreed that scheduling of future meetings will be announced well in advance and that appropriate time and location(s) for public information meetings be a prime consideration.

LOWDSA’s Board of Directors also invited the Ministry to use the Area News and social media sites to post their updates so that members and the community at large receive the most current information.

It is also important to note that routes for Phase 2 (Hwy 673 to Rush Bay Road) and Phase 3 (through Clearwater Bay to the Bypass, 17A) have not been determined. The Ministry does not have any route options for these two phases and any concrete information is at least a year away.

There are many divergent perspectives that must be taken into consideration: First Nations values (Four Winds), TransCanada pipelines, two national railroads, hydro corridors, and last but not least, property owners. The many lakes and sensitive wetlands are also first-order considerations.

Lastly, as the holiday season nears, and on behalf of LOWDSA, it is my honour to wish everyone Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! We are very excited about what is in store for 2024.

Highway Twinning Most recently, we have received questions from members regarding the Highway Twinning project. First and foremost is the clarification of the role of LOWDSA as it pertains to this very long-term and critical project. Currently, our Board has been closely monitoring the evolving planning. Our representatives have been attending meetings in Kenora and Falcon Lake (regarding the Manitoba planning). Information obtained at these meetings has been and will continue to be provided in the Area News and on our social media sites. We have also asked the engineering consulting group, WSP, that they provide an online

Wow—one full year in the books, where has the time gone? From seedling days to our first Celebrate Lake Life event, to dock talks and everything else we were a part of this summer, I’ve done so much learning and growing since joining team LOWDSA. When I reflect on the past year, I think of all we have accomplished and how far we have come. There is so much optimism for the future. I can’t wait to see where we take things. Of course, this couldn’t be done without our very strong core team.

Alena Collier, Assistant Executive Director, is behind all our social media content, eNews, and general communications. She helps to keep us in the know. She also handles all our membership matters. Thank you, Alena, for all your work and dedication to the organization.

Our environment programming wouldn’t be as strong as it is without Brie McCardle, our first Environment Program Manager.

Her leadership with our LakeSmart team this season has been invaluable. The LakeSmart team is the face of LOWDSA at most of our events. The endless positive feedback we received about this crew this year was incredible, and that is a direct reflection of Brie and her work.

Led by her craving to get outdoors with her family and her curiosity for a new environment, Vic launched Mosswood Adventures and Rentals, an eco-tourism business with people and planet in mind. Mosswood is a welcoming and inclusive space where visitors and locals can explore lakes and forests year-round using human-powered outdoor leisure rentals or learn new skills and cultivate community with their intro adventure options. Vic’s on a mission to host unique Northwestern Ontario experiences while promoting the endless four season fun that this region has to offer.

Jeff Gustafson grew up on the shores of Lake of the Woods, fishing every chance he could. Today, he pursues a career competing in bass tournaments in the U.S., where he won the Bassmaster Classic, the Superbowl of bass fishing, earlier this year in Tennessee. When he’s around home, he spends a lot of time on the water, catching bass and any other fish that will bite. In addition to competitive fishing, Jeff also stays busy as a fishing guide, outdoor writer and fishing promoter.

Municipal Property Assessment Corporation Property Reassessments The Ontario government is postponing a province-wide property reassessment while it conducts a new review of the accuracy and fairness of the system. MPAC says it will continue to maintain an inventory of all properties so that the postponement doesn’t affect annual assessment rolls.

All assessments conducted in 2024 by MPAC will continue to be based on the valuation date of January 1, 2016. MPAC, a publicly funded non-profit organization that assesses more than 5.5 million properties across Ontario, is responsible for returning an updated assessment roll each year that includes changes such as permitted additions, renovations, new structures or new construction.

Ontario investing in fire services in the north The Ontario government announced this fall they are investing close to $35 million in 17 new fire trucks, lifesaving firefighting equipment, and two new Mobile Live Fire Training Units to better protect northern communities and keep people safe. The ability to deliver training for rural communities is vital.

Funding for the new fire trucks and firefighting equipment will be delivered through the Northern Fire Protection Program which provides assistance and support for fire protection services in 47 communities that rely on more than 800 volunteer firefighters.

Ontario government bringing high-speed Internet access to remote communities The Ontario government will use a satellite internet service provider to bring highspeed internet access to approximately 43,000 unserved and underserved homes and businesses, marking another milestone in the province’s plan to help bring connectivity to every community by the end of 2025.

In partnership with Infrastructure Ontario, the province has launched a competitive process to find qualified satellite internet service providers. Interested service providers can visit merx.com to download the Request for Qualifications (RFQ).

Ontario is investing nearly $4 billion to help bring access to reliable high-speed internet for every community across the province. This is the largest single investment in high-speed internet, in any province, by any government in Canadian history.

Highway twinning A public information session was held on September 20, 2023. It was an open house format with representatives from Ministry of Transportation and WSP available to do a presentation and answer questions. During the presentation they discussed how the study is being carried out in three sections and they are currently working on section #2 (see graphics above). The public was invited to submit their feedback on the suggested routes until October 20, 2023. They will be hosting another engagement session in the spring of 2024. Why it’s so important to keep your member profile up to date

BY ALENA COLLIER, ASSISTANT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Being a member of the Lake of the Woods District Stewardship Association is incredibly important. If you have been a supporting member for a long time, you likely have heard it before, but we truly appreciate you. Your membership assists the association in so many ways that go far beyond what you may know. We have been able to staff a team of three full time positions, Ashley Hoffmeister our Executive Director, Brie McCardle our Environment Program Manager, and myself (Alena Collier) Assistant Executive Director. With these full time positions we can do more of the stewardship programming that supports the lakes that we love. It is important to us that you continue to be a supporting member but also very important for the watershed.

We hope that you take pride in being a LOWDSA member.

Our members play a critical role in helping us to understand the issues and challenges facing our lakes and our community as people who love our lakes and rivers. There’s nothing like staying connected, forming relationships, feeling understood, and being able to relate to each other. We hear so many heartwarming stories of lake neighbours pitching in to help each other.

As a cottager, community is pivotal considering the many forms of adversity you may be facing as the conditions can go from one extreme to the next.

Holding a LOWDSA membership is joining a community of people who all have something in common: loving the lake.

In turn, your association is hoping to learn more about you and what matters to you so that we can better represent our membership. “Fall” water levels

BY JEFF POLAKOFF, LOWDSA REPRESENTATIVE TO LAKE OF THE WOODS CONTROL BOARD The summer of 2023 saw a return to normal water levels for Lake of the Woods for part of the season. However, as we have seen in the past three years, the Winnipeg River Drainage Basin, including Lake of the Woods, continues to experience some dramatic changes in weather patterns. As we approached fall, conditions in the basin continued to exhibit moderate to abnormal drought conditions due to the lack of precipitation. As a result of low inflows, the Lake of the Woods Control Board Secretariat reduced outflows from the lake to the Winnipeg River throughout much of the summer. At the time of writing this article at the beginning of October, the level of Lake of the Woods was at 322.68 m (1058.6 ft), a 15th percentile level for the time of year. Flows at the Norman Dam from the lake to the river had been reduced to 100 cubic m/s. This is compared to a range of 650 – 800 cubic m/s in June.

At the end of September, the water level on the Winnipeg River was approximately the same level or slightly lower than the 10th percentile level for the drought year of 2021 in September.

With drought conditions persisting across the basin as we entered fall and in preparation for establishing targets for winter and spring, the Control Board and Secretariat have been analyzing long term forecasts and other meteorological indicators based on the best available information. One such set of indicators are related to impacts associated with El Niño and La Niña. El Niño and La Niña refer to the warming and cooling trends that develop over the Pacific Ocean, which have a significant impact on our weather in the basin. During recent years our weather has been characterized by La Niña cooling conditions, however meteorologists now indicate that the surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean has warmed indicating a switch to El Niño conditions. This signals a southern shift of the Pacific jet stream causing areas in the northern U.S. and Canada to become warmer and drier than usual. The effects in Canada are more pronounced in the winter and can also affect spring conditions particularly in western and central Canada including Lake of the Woods.

Overall, it is anticipated that the winter of 23/24 in the basin will be warmer and drier based on seasonal averages. However, other factors such as the polar vortex and its delivery of arctic air, can also affect winter weather patterns. As we have learned, variability and lack of predictability is the hallmark of current weather forecasting and the impacts of climate change.

Both Environment and Climate Change Canada as well as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. have indicated a strong likelihood that El Niño conditions will strengthen and persist and further, that these conditions could also result in low spring inflows in the basin. The Secretariat is paying close attention to storage levels in the lake in anticipation of extended drought conditions and the potential for low water levels in the spring.

New recreation opportunities in Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls

BY HEATHER GROPP, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, opened its new Four-Season Recreation Facility on October 12, 2023.

The 2.4-million-dollar facility features three covered pickle ball courts, and two basketball half-courts for use during the spring, fall and summer seasons. It also features a covered 80 by 150 ft. ice rink during the winter months. The facility is equipped with outdoor lighting, wind-protecting side walls, and has the capacity to host a wide variety of covered outdoor community events.

One week later, on October 21, the Township opened the first phase of their new bike trails in Nestor Falls. These trails, which are built off the existing Red Pine Trail, include beginner, intermediate, and advanced level options to challenge all levels of cyclists.

The opening of these facilities is exciting for the entire Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls community. They provide great new options for recreation in the region for permanent and seasonal residents as well as visitors to the region.

Located just under 100km from Kenora’s city centre in Vermilion Bay, Borealis Sled Dog Adventures (canada-dogsled.com) is a way to experience this once in a lifetime winter experience. They also do group bookings for schools, organizations, and private parties.

Make it a trail day Slow down your adventure pace by taking advantage of Kenora’s hiking trails or strap on a pair of snowshoes for trekking more snowy terrain. These activities are perfect for those who want to explore nature and enjoy the scenic beauty of winter landscapes.

Try this fun and healthy seasonal activity at an indoor facility like the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre or year-round ice rink at the Bowman Electric Keewatin Memorial Arena. Make it an outdoor adventure at the various community clubs, under the Jarnel Contracting Pavilion, or on the lake at the Rabbit Lake rink and skating trail.

Get a lift from furry friends Dog sledding is an exhilarating winter activity that has been enjoyed by humans and dogs for centuries. The sport involves using a sled, which is usually pulled by a team of dogs, to travel across snow-covered terrain. The dogs are harnessed together in front of the sled and are trained to work together to pull the sled efficiently. Dog sledding has a rich history, having been used by many Indigenous cultures for transportation and hunting. Today, it is a popular winter sport and tourist attraction in many parts of the world, particularly in the northern regions of Canada.

For more seasoned snowshoers, the Lost Lake Snowshoe Trail is a 5km stretch of picturesque boreal forest maintained and operated by the Kenora Nordic and Biathlon Club (KNBC). Just watch out not to disturb the groomed ski trails. You can pick up your snowshoe rentals, a KNBC day pass or commit to a seasonal membership by visiting the Mount Evergreen Chalet and rental shop.

Hit the ice road A winter adventure wouldn’t be complete in Kenora without a walk or drive on the ice roads during the winter months. These roads are built on frozen lakes and rivers and provide a unique one-of-a-kind experience. If you’re a beginner to ice road travel, a great place to start is on Lake of the Woods off the ministry landing at the end of First Avenue South in the city of Kenora.

While the roadways change annually, you will always find some hidden lake gems that make this region a magical winter experience.

While there is no denying that our summer months around Lake of the Woods are great, chances are if you live in central Canada throughout the year, you have some tolerance for winter and cold weather.

We are faced with ice for nearly half the year so if you’re like me and enjoy outdoor activities, you have to gear up and get outside, even during the cold winter months. In the winter issue of the Area News last year, I discussed some of the basic ice fishing options around the lake.

This year, we’re taking it a little bit further and I’m sharing more of my top options for getting out on the ice and having some fun this winter.

RENT AN ICE HUT

SNEAKY FISHING HOT SPOTS

On the Minnesota side of the lake there are a number of resorts that actually do more business during the winter months than they do during the summer. It is estimated that there are over 5,000 ice huts speckled across the south shore of the lake, ready for anglers to catch walleye and perch. The resorts rent these shelters, set up on prime fishing locations, by day or night.

Some of these huts are basic with a heater, a couple of chairs and some holes to fish out of. Others are more sophisticated with beds, kitchens and all of the comforts you can imagine.

Spending a night or two in one of these shelters has become a popular activity for people to get out with some friends or family and have a good time.

While we know Lake of the Woods is one of the best destinations for ice fishing because of the variety of species and excellent fishing opportunities, there are several smaller lakes sprinkled around the big lake that offer some good fishing options as well.

Some of these are overlooked by anglers yet still have resorts you can stay at and enjoy some top-notch fishing. The following are some of my top choices.

There are several guides who rent ice shelters on the north end of the lake. Kenora resident Jayden Symonds has taken things up a notch, renting more luxurious ice huts out on Lake of the Woods. His shelters are roomy, have kitchens and TV, are warm when you arrive and they are set up in good fishing locations where you can expect to have some luck. If you just want to get out on the ice and have a good time, consider renting an ice hut that is all ready for you to just show up and catch fish.

Crow Lake, just over the highway from Lake of the Woods in Nestor Falls is one of the most scenic, beautiful lakes we have. It is a trout lake with deep, clear water and pine-covered shorelines. Several resorts on the lake stay open throughout the winter to cater to anglers visiting to catch the plentiful lake trout that are found in the lake. Numbers are excellent, with a shot at some big trout as well. Lake trout are active throughout the winter and still bite proven baits like a white tube jig or jigging spoon really well. Excellent walleye and crappie fishing are available across the highway on Sabaskong Bay on Lake of the Woods as well.

While anglers from all over North America visit the Sioux Narrows/Whitefish Bay area of Lake of the Woods each winter to catch lake trout, there are several inland lakes that offer some great fishing for walleye, lake trout and crappie. The best lakes are only accessible by snowmobile but the fact that they are remote and receive little fishing pressure is why they are so good. Like the Nestor Falls area, several resorts around Sioux Narrows stay open through the winter to cater to ice anglers.

The resort owners will be able to direct you to some of the best places to fish, on the nearby Aulneau Peninsula and off some of the mainland back roads.

Around Kenora, the ice road makes it easy for anglers to access great fishing locations, especially if they don’t have access to snowmobiles. Excellent perch and walleye fishing can be found easily on many of the humps and points that the road passes near. Focus on 30-40 feet of water and tie up a jig tipped with a minnow or a 3/8 ounce jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head and you should be able to have some fun out there. If you fish a spot for 15-30 minutes without luck, move on to another one. The fishing is really great out there so if you aren’t catching anything, you probably aren’t on top of them.

There are fewer resorts around Kenora but several guides who can show you a good time if you want someone to show you the ropes.

Ice fishing is a fun way to stay active outdoors during the winter.

It’s a relatively easy sport to enter once you get the initial gear you need like an auger to drill holes, a rod or two and a small assortment of tackle. For me, sonar is mandatory so I can watch what’s going on beneath my hole but you can still catch fish without it. One of the perks to going with a guide is that they will be able to show you how the electronics work and how fun they are to use while ice fishing to watch your bait and how the fish react to it.

Leaving the dock at the Y Camp Stephens on a perfect July morning, little did they know that their journey would build a new connection with the Lake of the Woods and with each other.

The three cousins are each from different parts of Canada and the United States but their family connections with the Lake of the Woods run deep.

Claire Young and Rose Finlayson, both 14, and Hugo Thompson, 13, spend summers on Raspberry Island near Minaki in a cottage built by their grandparents more than two decades ago.

Claire comes to the lake from California where together with her parents and sister, Riley, they travel to visit their paternal family at Minaki, or to Lake of the Woods where their mother grew up and where her aunt and uncle still live on their island home for much of the year.

Rose lives in Vancouver and Hugo lives in Calgary and they have been coming to the lake “since forever”.

The cousins’ canoe trip took them 205 kilometres deeper into that lake experience, honed their paddling skills and developed wilderness experience.

Camp Stephens has been hosting summer programs for youths for over 120 years. Most programs provide shortterm camping experiences held on-site at Copeland Island, where campers stay in cabins, eat communally in the large dining and recreation hall, and participate in games, a climbing wall and water sports.

The canoe programs offered by the YMCA-YWCA take participants to remote areas and vary in length and difficulty according to age and experience.

“I was really happy with the advanced program, especially since I was with Claire and Hugo,” said Rose.

“All three of us were ready to take that next step and take on something more difficult.”

That next step involved a lot of paddling and 16 portages in which each participant, with the help of two Y counsellors, had to take responsibility for all of their gear and canoes over land barriers that varied in length from 50 meters to 1.6 kilometres.

Bugs, rain and wind are part of the experience too.

“You need a certain attitude going into this,” according to Rose. “Sure, you need bug nets and it’s going to be messy and dirty. But if you stay open to the experience, you can really enjoy it.”

The team took advantage of the big wind on the lake by drawing on the experience of their counsellors and devising a “sail trail”, which propelled four canoes side by side using a tarp strung between two paddles held each by a canoeist in the outer canoe.

“Our friends do not understand why we would want to do this trip,” said Claire, who acknowledges that her friends in central California would be least familiar with this type of wilderness experience. “They think I’m crazy.”

“I think I am very lucky to have been able to do this,” said Hugo. “I didn’t know that Lake of the Woods is that big. I learned a lot about wilderness and now I’m better at canoeing, that’s for sure.”

Claire, Rose and Hugo signed up for the advanced twoweek canoe trip, since all three had been involved in Y programs in the past and were experienced in canoes.

“The thing that will stay with me is the beauty of it all,” said Claire. “The trip took me out of my comfort zone but I was sharing it with all of the people in our group and especially with Rose and Hugo.”

For Rose, the best part of the trip was the remoteness of the route they took and sharing the experience with her cousins.

“The trip changed the way we appreciate the lake. Away from everything, you bond with the people you’re with, you rely on them and make real connections. At our Minaki cottage, we’re comfortable with electricity, beds and a flush toilet; out there, you’ve got a sleeping bag and how much do you really need?”

“One night there was a big thunderstorm but we were so tired from canoeing that we barely noticed it,” said Hugo.

Good food and great cooking by the counsellors ensured they were comfortable. Apparently, Hobo Stew and Klik luncheon meat are tasty when you’ve been paddling and carrying a canoe all day.

The 205-kilometre trip and 16 portages took the group into lakes east of Dogtooth Lake that are the research focus of IISD Experimental Lakes, a world-recognized facility comprised of 58 lakes where research is conducted on the impact of climate change, water management and contaminants. This natural, freshwater laboratory made a big impression on the group.

“The water was so clear! You could see to the bottom of the lake even in deep water and with the trees coming right down to the shoreline, it was very pretty,” added Claire.

The canoe trip achieved the hope of Claire, Rose and Hugo’s parents and grandparents that the cousins carry on the families’ love of the lake, respect for wilderness, and a connection and respect for each other. an

Carpenters of the forest Over 200 woodpecker species inhabit forested areas worldwide, except for Australia. Beyond being beautiful to see and fascinating to watch, woodpeckers are critical to the ecology of the forests they live in.

There are five species of non-migratory woodpeckers throughout Lake of the Woods area: Pileated, Hairy, Downey, Black-backed, and American Three-toed woodpeckers. We also have the Northern Flicker and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, both of which are migratory woodpeckers. Red-headed woodpeckers migrate to the extreme south of the Lake of the Woods area during the breeding season but are not commonly found elsewhere in this area.

Ecological benefits of woodpecker activity Together, woodpeckers dramatically enhance and protect the ecology of our forests.

Woodpeckers are cavity nesters, usually carving out new cavities in dead trees every year. Cavities of various sizes abandoned by woodpeckers are quickly adopted to serve as secure nesting sites or dens for many species of birds and mammals. These include chickadees, nuthatches, wood ducks, owls, squirrels, pine martens, and voles, contributing to the abundance of life and the biodiversity of the forest. Nothing beats woodpeckers at averting a housing crisis.

Woodpecker’s pecking activities uncover insects that provide food for other bird species. A striking example of this is provided

by Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, which rely heavily on tree sap as a high-energy food. Sapsuckers drill neat rows of holes into living trees. These holes become sap wells, which slowly leak sap

that is eagerly eaten by many other species of birds, mammals, and insects including hornets, porcupines, hummingbirds, chipmunks, bats, squirrels, hares, wasps, bees, butterflies, and other animals. Insects feeding at the sap wells provide fine dining for the sapsuckers and other animals. Sap wells are particularly important to Ruby-throated hummingbirds some of which may time their migration north each year to benefit from the sapsuckers’ sap wells.

Adaptations for life in the trees Woodpeckers have a number of special adaptations for treelife. They have strong feet with 4 toes that form an “x,” giving them a secure grip on tree trunks. Their long strong tail feathers are both a prop and a springboard for moving up tree trunks.

Woodpeckers’ stout bills are excellent for excavation and vital to getting food, creating shelter, and raising young.

Woodpecker tongues are so long they may extend several inches beyond their bill tips. Once a woodpecker exposes an edible insect, its barbed tongue, covered in sticky saliva, flicks out to capture it.

The Northern Flicker feeds primarily on ants on the ground. The “moustache” indicates this is a male.

Wood-boring insects are a threat to important forest ecosystems in Canada. Studies have shown that birds, particularly woodpeckers, are the most effective natural control agent of this threat to our forests.

Woodpeckers spread decay-inducing organisms like fungus through the forest. In doing this, they facilitate natural decay, speeding up the processes that provide them and a host of other species with homes and a food supply.

The chips fly when woodpeckers peck at a tree. Health and safety considerations include bristly feathers covering their nostrils to prevent inhalation of wood particles and a third eyelid which is translucent, protecting their eyes while allowing vigilance against predators.

Pecking at wood 8,000 to 12,000 times per day creates enormous forces that would turn human brains into Q-Anon-addled mush. Fortunately, woodpecker brains are cushioned by special structures within their skulls.

Woodpeckers peck for 4 distinct reasons: to uncover insects for food, to excavate nesting cavities, and drumming to attract mates and establish their territory. Woodpeckers also communicate with each other by singing.

Threats to woodpecker populations Like most other species, including humans, woodpeckers are threatened by climate change in a variety of ways. Changes to dominant tree species could affect the availability of suitable nesting and foraging habitats. Climate change may disrupt the insect populations upon which woodpeckers feed.

Extreme weather events such as storms and heavy rains caused by climate change might damage existing cavities or make it difficult for woodpeckers to excavate new ones. Altered habitats could also affect predator-prey dynamics, potentially exposing woodpeckers to new predators or increasing their vulnerability to existing ones.

Migratory woodpecker species rely on specific cues, such as temperature and food availability, to determine when to migrate. Climate change could disrupt these cues, leading to mistimed migrations, which could impact their survival and reproductive success.

Ongoing research is necessary to better understand these potential climate change impacts and to develop appropriate conservation strategies that can help mitigate negative effects on woodpecker and other wildlife populations.

Protecting woodpecker populations Supporting wildlife populations involves a combination of habitat conservation, responsible land management, and minimizing disturbances. Supporting environmental organizations is one effective way to achieve those ends. My favourites include the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Nature Canada and the David Suzuki Foundation but there are many other good environmental organizations to choose from.

As individuals, we can advocate for environmental protections and action on the climate emergency at the local, provincial and national levels. We can also participate in citizen science programs that track woodpecker populations and contribute valuable data for researchers and we can volunteer with organizations dedicated to bird conservation, habitat protection, and environmental education.

As individual property owners, there are steps we can take which will benefit woodpecker populations and other species, such as leaving snags (standing dead trees) to provide suitable woodpecker habitat if safety permits. We can avoid using insecticides that can harm the essential food source for

The main thrust of this article has been to stress the value of woodpeckers to the ecology of forests rather than dwell on recognition and behaviour of individual species. My favourite book for that type of information on both plants and animals is The Complete Up North by Doug Bennet and Tim Tiner. For bird identification and basic information there are many excellent bird books. Online, I go to the websites of Bird Canada and Cornell University Lab of Ornithology.

Ever wonder what happens at the world’s freshwater laboratory during the winter?

Located in a sparsely populated region of northwestern Ontario, it is no secret that IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA)— comprising 58 lakes and their watersheds—is pretty remote. In fact, its remoteness is the reason why the location was originally selected. It is only by ensuring that the lakes on which we experiment are pristine and untouched by other human activity that we can be certain the data we get from our whole-ecosystem experiments are the result of our manipulating those lakes—and nothing else.

All the images you probably recognize of the site are in glorious summer, with sun reflecting off the lakes, beautiful sunsets and our researchers out on the lakes basking in the heat. What you

may not realize is that, despite the location’s remoteness and the cold temperatures it can experience, IISD-ELA is actually open and functioning around the year—365 days a year, in fact.

And yes, that includes winter.

Allow me to paint a picture of what happens at the world’s freshwater laboratory during those winter months.

Hibernation in Winnipeg At IISD-ELA most of our researchers spend the winter working on data collected over the open-water field season. This means that many IISD-ELA scientists and researchers spend their time in our Winnipeg headquarters, analyzing results collected during the summer, writing up research and, of course, catching up on emails.

Long-Term Ecological Research Some of us still head out onto the lakes, however.

Our Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program, for example, monitors five IISD-ELA lakes throughout the year, taking various measurements (such as temperature profiles), sampling the water chemistry, assessing hydrology (inflows and outflows) and measuring population sizes and abundance of the phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish communities.

We do not experiment on these lakes, so their data provides us with reference points for the experimental lakes that are

being manipulated. This long-term data record also allows us to look at changes in the lakes over time, such as the effects of climate change.

Over the winter, we continue this monitoring, but at a reduced scale, so we focus only on temperature and oxygen profiles and water chemistry. We sample phytoplankton and zooplankton twice each winter and measure hydrology monthly.

Monitoring continues at IISD-ELA One example of the monitoring we do during the winter is the measurement of the “inflows” and “outflows” between certain lakes to explore the impacts of climate change.

When I first started working at the site, I was surprised to find that the water continues to flow between lakes over the winter months. I had assumed that the lake outflows froze solid, but I soon discovered that that was not true.

Usually, we would use data loggers at weirs between the lakes to measure these inflows and outflows, but these don’t work in the winter (unless they are heated). Instead, we take monthly trips to IISD-ELA during the winter to take manual measurements of flow at most of our weirs.

The Meteorological Site Another year-round program is our Meteorological Site, where we continue to measure temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity and solar radiation throughout the winter. We also sample

precipitation and air for the Canadian Air and Precipitation Monitoring Network (Environment and Climate Change Canada).

In the winter, precipitation is measured using a snowboard and nipher snow gauge to measure daily snowfall amounts.

It’s not all work, however. Sometimes we get a chance to appreciate the beautiful winter wonderland that is IISD-ELA in the winter.

The view from space is compelling and confirms what we have seen firsthand on Lake of the Woods at the end of September. The cyanobacterial bloom (aka bluegreen algae) on Lake of the Woods is tracking towards being one of the most severe since 2002.

Bloom severity is an index that combines bloom extent and intensity (Figure 2). Severity has not only been above average but has exceeded the 75th percentile since mid-September, with exceedance increasing dramatically by October 2. and low winds conditions continue, development of more substantial blooms throughout the lake, including at the northcentral basin is expected.

There is significant variability in bloom severity from year to year. After a few years of moderate blooms and a hint of a trend towards reduction in bloom severity since the mid 2000s, the maximum severity experienced this year so far, exceeds the worst in the satellite records (2002 – present, Figure 3).

Phosphorus is the primary nutrient fueling these cyanobacterial blooms. However, the factors contributing to bloom severity are complex and include multiple interactions between excess phosphorus with climate (temperature, wind, extreme rain events, and lake water levels). Sources of phosphorus are many but with respect to these late season blooms, elevated phosphorus concentrations building up over the summer from remobilization from the lake bottom is a key driver.

We are still paying for our sins of past decades of uncontrolled pollution that accumulated in the sediments of the lake.

There is much good news. Current phosphorus loading from point and non-point sources has declined about three-fold over the past few decades from improved regulation. Also, research has shown that the pool of legacy phosphorus in the lake bottom is declining, albeit slowly. It will be important to maintain the reductions from new sources from the watershed so that the lake will continue to flush itself. Minnesota is implementing its plan to cut phosphorus further from sources in the U.S.

When the sun goes down

BY CONNIE LARSON It is December. The lake churns, still open, still defying freezeup—promising yet another day of dense cloud. The sky is pregnant with molecules of snow ready to be released. It means that we need to conserve our solar power and propane. There will be no propane delivery to our five-acre island on Lake of the Woods until spring break-up; the sun hours per day (isolation hours per day) are half that of summer, reducing our solar energy capacity. Our battery charge controller is already reading low— diminished by four days of cloud. Time to be creative—how not to run out of utility when you are off the grid.

Making the most of propane There are only so many variables and so many uses for propane.

Our uses consisted of propane range and refrigerator, hot water tank and 3000-watt generator—back-up for the solar system.

Although we would have saved ample fuel and preferred an on demand hot-water system, we settled for a hot water tank, turned to its lowest temperature. It sat adjacent to our large granite fireplace that ran continuously during the winter months; a cozy warm spot for the tank to snuggle up to. The generator was used to top up the large deep cycle twenty bank of batteries.

While running the generator to charge solar batteries, a multiple of other tasks would be performed—vacuuming, charging battery operated tools, playing music! If we were vigilant, we would maximize both the use of the generator and the use of the propane.

A propane freezer was not necessary. Our decommissioned Serval refrigerator had become an outdoor freezer. It would serve us well until spring produced ample sunshine for our small electric freezer—and well before the black bears were awakened and tantalized.

The water for coffee was boiled on the small wood cookstove and kept hot in an insulated flask. I sipped the black brew as I made choices for dinner. We had placed an airtight insert into the old fireplace. Its top was wide and could hold more than one cast iron pot. The aroma of stew meat slowly simmering in a bed of onions, potatoes and carrots would fill the tiny cabin. Dumplings would be added in the last thirty minutes. Hot water was readily available from one of the pots on the wood heater. They also provided additional humidity for increased comfort in drier winter conditions. Those combined efforts reduced the use of the propane stove and propane hot water tank.

How can you be smart with your solar system? Avoid high amperage—coffee makers, electric gadgets of any kind, heaters, vacuums, of course ranges, refrigerators, freezers and toasters.

Use of high demand items on solar energy requires optimum conditions or real need. The design of our system was significant for off the grid requirements, but there were limitations. A large battery bank was essential. Solar panels can only operate when the sun is shining, whereas batteries provide stored energy day or night. The key was keeping them charged.

The biggest draw from our solar system was our well pump located some thirty feet below the surface of the lake. The pump required the most power—the most jam to start up and run for the longest time. The inverter was capable of the large draw of power required for the well pump on start-up. The generator was not big enough to handle that initial load. It was a planned event.

We had a 500-gallon holding tank located in a cellar under the cabin. The pressure pump that dispersed the water to faucets was a mere 0.5-amp draw. We were always conscious of water conservation to lessen demand on the system.

Lights are a minimal draw to a solar system. In the dark, black days of winter, we welcomed the brightness of our energy efficient bulbs. But this December, there had been too many

days in a row of overcast—slowly draining our energy like the drip of an intravenous bag. At 4 p.m. it was dark. The dishes would not be washed tonight. They could wait until tomorrow’s daylight. Every light was turned off except for where we sat until we turned in for the night. Our bodies had become accustomed to early nights and early rise. Anything that drew power was disconnected—a phone charger, a bag phone, a television, a modem, a receiver.

We would lay awake in the darkness listening to the ice forming on the bay—the magical tunes of chirping as small crystals unite.

We were isolated—as isolated as the sunshine days and hours. It

would be many weeks before we saw anyone. The flashing light of our control panel in our bedroom showed that there was nothing connected to the solar system.

The sun had gone down. All is well.

Thinking outside of the “box”

Treading a little wiser with our gift-giving How many of us really need more stuff? Many people are stressed by clutter and over-stuffed cupboards. The practice of gift-giving often promotes the purchase of unnecessary items that often turn into landfill waste. Before you purchase a gift, consider the resources it takes to produce and transport, and can the gift materials be recycled? Will the breakdown of the materials in the gift harm the environment?

Next time you want to acknowledge someone for a special occasion or achievement, consider giving a meaningful gift that has a low carbon footprint, uses no or minimal precious resources, and won’t strain the planet if it is discarded.

Here are some sustainable gift ideas that allow us to tread a little wiser.

• Secret Santa gifts: Many families choose names and purchase one gift at Christmas. This is a great way to cut down on purchasing, but for an added sustainable twist, have everyone re-gift an item for the gift exchange or ask that the gift must be purchased from a local business to reduce the carbon foot print or from a second-hand/thrift store.

Profits raised by thrift stores often go back to support those in need in our communities.

• Kids birthday party gifts: For a children’s birthday party, instead of guests bringing gifts, have your child choose an important organization or charity in your community and have the party-goers bring donations for the cause. This could be food and toys for an animal shelter, good used clothing or personal care products for a homeless shelter or supplies for a food bank.

• Experiential gifts: Consider buying tickets to a concert, theatre, paint night or sports event. If you can’t pin down a date, gift cards for restaurants or a movie theatre are another great option.

• Memorable gifts: Creating a handmade photo album or giving a digital photo frame gift is a wonderful way to share memories with the gift recipient.

• A gift of learning: Who doesn’t like learning something new? Consider purchasing a class or workshop for your gift recipient. Perhaps a gardening workshop, yoga class, an art class, or paddle boarding session.

• Consumable gifts: Look for local, packaging-free options for that perfect gift. Some ideas include homemade baking, jams and preserves, and perhaps a selection of delicious cheeses paired with some wine.

• Donation gifts: There is no shortage of charitable organizations undertaking important work, including those working to support vulnerable communities, and others helping create a sustainable planet for us to live in. Pick a charity that matches the interests and concerns of the recipient. The tax receipt will be an added bonus!

Consider giving an experiential gift, such as an art class or a concert, to friends and family to enjoy a night out together.

• Gifts of membership or subscriptions: There are many organizations that support their work through membership fees. Select an organization that matches the gift recipient’s interests. If they are not already Lake of the Woods District Stewardship Association members for example, a gift membership would be a perfect gift for friends and family who love lake life. Memberships to the zoo, museums and art galleries are other great options for a meaningful gift.

For avid readers, consider purchasing a subscription for a magazine, e-book or audiobook service.

• A carbon capture gift: Help the gift recipient capture greenhouse gases, by gifting them perennials plants or trees that will help offset the carbon they produce. If you are unsure what type of plants to buy, a gift card from a greenhouse is a great option.

• A gift of time: Many people struggle to keep up with jobs that need to be done around the house or cottage. Consider a gift of time that could include painting a fence, trimming trees, or organizing a yard clean-up party, including bringing the food for the clean-up crew.

If you need to wrap that sustainably purchased gift—consider all the options for environmentally friendly gift wrapping. Did you know that every year Canadians send approximately 540,000 tonnes of wrapping paper and bags to the landfill? That’s equivalent to 100,000 elephants. Some sustainable gift-wrapping ideas include reusable bags, newspaper, and colourful recycled paper that might ordinarily go into your recycling box, wrapping the gift in a tea towel, pretty fabric, a functional basket or any other interesting container you might no longer need but can be reused. Cereal boxes are another great replacement for gift boxes.

Giving more thought to the gifts we give not only makes the recipient happier. Mother Nature will thank you as well! an

BY ANITA & HENRY RASMUSSEN The average person may have trouble tossing all those lovely vegetable and fruit peels into the waste bin each and every day, perhaps with the uneasy feeling they could be put it to better use. The sad fact is that most household and industrial organic waste goes straight to the landfill where it compacts, eventually producing methane and other harmful gases.

It is estimated that at least one-third of all waste is organic and therefore has no place in a landfill. The option of composting one’s own household waste is always open, but is it realistic or just a lot of trouble?

Reams of information is available about composting, much of it rather intimidating. Nature, the great composter, teaches us to keep it simple. A walk in the forest is a lesson in layering, as leaves and other debris quietly rot underfoot, further broken down by millions of microbes. The prairies were constantly churned up by the herds of bison who were themselves a large source of rich organic matter.

Manitoba gumbo, the envy of every gardener everywhere, is the result of accumulated layers of decomposing plants and fish from Lake Agassis over millennia.

The lesson seems to be that if you amass organic matter, pile it up and It is estimated that at least leave it to itself for a time, you will end one- third of all waste is organic with no place in a landfill. up with compost.

There are many good reasons for composting, not the least of which is the aforementioned issue of diverting food waste from landfills. Adding compost to gardens will actually make the soil more fertile and may instill in our children a sense of environmental stewardship. We would do well to remember that it is the soil that feeds us.

No less a person than Franklin Delano Roosevelt warned: “The nation that destroys its soil, destroys itself”.

The organic matter should be stirred with a pitchfork at least once a week.

But where to begin?

The householder with a backyard usually has space for a compost bin of some sort, not too far from the garden and with water access. Bins can be purchased or built with wooden slats that allow for air circulation, rain and drainage. Some are “tumblers” which can be spun to mix the material inside. People with more space can simply start a compost pile in a secluded corner, though a bin does keep things neatly together.

After lining the bottom of the bin with twigs or mulch, it is ready for layering. The one important rule to remember is the two-toone ratio of organic material in the bin, meaning two layers of “brown” material (dried leaves, straw, sawdust, wood pruning, cardboard and paper) for every “green” layer (grass clippings, vegetable and fruit peels and scraps, eggshells, tea and coffee grounds, green plant or flower cuttings and weeds without seeds).

Occasionally adding a shovel full or two of soil will help keep odours from developing and add helpful microbes to the mix.

A compost heap should be kept wet or at least damp in order for decomposition to take place. Add water when needed. Ideally, the

organic material in the bin should be stirred once a week, or at least once in a while with a pitchfork or shovel for aeration. If left, decomposition will still occur but at a slower pace. Covering the bin keeps in heat and moisture. After a few months, the opening at the bottom of the bin can be opened to reveal a quantity of fine brown soil-like material: “Black Gold” to gardeners.

In the interest of even simpler composting, filling a garden trench in autumn with kitchen scraps and yard debris and then covering it with soil allows winter to speed up decomposition.

Meanwhile, what is happening around us on a larger scale?

Thunder Bay has a spring and fall pick-up of garden waste, including leaves and branches, which is turned into free compost for gardeners. City curbside pick-up of other organics is planned, possibly by 2024.

MEMBER RECIPE

Shore lunch—perch!

BY JEFF GUSTAFSON, LAKE OF THE WOODS Having grown up working at several resorts around Lake of the Woods as a guide, I’ve cooked hundreds of shore lunches over the years. These lunches have featured walleye, crappie, perch and pike. While all of these fish are excellent eating, perch are my all-time favourite. The smaller fillets cook fast and are as good as it gets.

While every resort has its own spin on the shore lunch, my favourite way to do it is to keep it simple with the fresh fish as the focus. If the conditions allow, I would prefer cooking over an open fire. Just a note a roaring fire may cause your oil to explode.

The trick is to have hot coals and a low burning fire.

Some fresh fish and sides cooked over a fire are as good as it gets!

The amount of each will depend on how many fillets you have. Go with the “flow” but this three-part breading is no fail! Vegetable oil or lard heats up the best.

Potatoes • Cut into fries or silver dollars Cook the potatoes first in your pan of oil since they don't leave any crumbs (mess) in the oil and take a little bit longer. Cook until crispy. Set aside in some foil and move on to the “star” of the show.

Batter and fry the fish To batter:

Dip the fillets into the flour, then egg, then corn flake crumbs (in separate bowls). Heat the oil until bubbly and line the fillets up one by one giving them some room to cook. Cook until the breading is golden, usually just a couple of minutes per side and sometimes less depending how hot your fire or grill is.

Can of creamed corn and beans

• Flour • Egg (or hot sauce instead of egg for something different) • Corn flake crumbs (or one of the many batter options available that you like) • Vegetable oil or lard

• Leave the lid attached when warming over fire to keep ashes out of the can.

Other things to include: • Some fresh lemon to squeeze on fish • Salt, pepper, lemon pepper • Don’t forget the utensils to cook and eat with along with some plates • Some fresh vegetables to keep it healthy (ha ha!) an

The joy of winter birding

By Drew Monkman and Jacob Rodenberg It might surprise you that the year’s chilliest months provide amazing birding opportunities. Yes, winter lacks the species diversity of spring and fall, but it has other things going for it. For beginners, the smaller number of species present causes less confusion when it comes to identification. The absence of leaves on trees and shrubs also makes spotting easier. Another bonus is that winter is often the best time of year to see highly prized birds like owls and winter finches.

As for equipment, all you really need is a field guide like Sibley Birds East (or West) and a decent pair of binoculars.

The new generation of binoculars are not only first-rate but quite affordable. Good “bins” add so much more to the birding experience. Two amazing free apps are also part of standard birding equipment these days. Download the eBird app to explore local sightings and record your observations and the Merlin Bird ID app to assist with identification. Merlin even has a Sound ID feature that instantly identifies the birds calling around you.

It's also important to know what birds to expect in winter in your region. To do so, go to ebird.org/home and click

on Explore. Scroll down and click on Bar Charts. Select a region (country and province or state) and sub-region (your county). Click Continue and set the date range to Entire Year and the years to 2012 to 2022. Click Continue and you’ll see bar charts that show what birds to expect. You should also check eBird regularly for recent sightings and birder activity in your county.

Keep in mind that the mix of species present in winter can change somewhat from year to year. This depends on factors like whether water bodies remain unfrozen and on the availability of natural foods. The most variable species are the so-called “winter finches”, most of which breed in the boreal forest. They include redpolls, siskins, grosbeaks and crossbills. To see what species are likely to turn up this year, Google “Winter finch forecast 2023-2024”.

You should also check if there is a bird or nature club in your area. These groups often host guided bird walks. In the U.S., many cities have an Audubon chapter. In Ontario, Google “Nature Network” to find a club near you. Nature Manitoba and Nature Calgary also offer regular birding outings.

Hotspots Hotspots are species-rich, public locations that birders visit regularly. Get to know the hotspots in your area. Here’s some examples: Winnipeg (Fort Whyte Alive), Toronto (Tommy Thompson Park), Calgary (Inglewood Bird Sanctuary) and Minneapolis (Minnesota Valley NWR – Bass Ponds). You can find lots more hotspots at ebird.org. Click on Explore and then Explore Hotspots. Enter your location. Click on the reverse teardrop hotspot markers to see the number of species observed. The bar charts will indicate what birds are present each month.

Finding the birds

Join a Christmas Bird Count

If you don’t do so already, setting up feeders to bring the birds to you is a great starting point. You’ll attract the most species by having a feeder each for black-oil sunflower seed, niger seed, suet, and shelled peanuts. An excellent feeder resource which includes what birds to anticipate in your area can be found at feederwatch.org.

A Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a day spent counting as many species and individuals of those species as possible. The data gathered contributes to bird research. CBCs are organized at the local level, often by a nature club, and take place over one calendar day from December 14 to January 5. Beginners are always welcome. Participating in a CBC is also a great way to meet and learn from other birders and to see species you might miss on your own. Participants in last year’s Calgary count tallied 65 species, including 7,610 bohemian waxwings! Go to birdscanada.org or audubon.org to find a count near you.

The most satisfying winter birding, however, comes from heading out into the field and finding the birds yourself. Just be sure to layer up. Try to find areas where the trees are laden with berries (most often in neighbourhoods) or with seeds and cones. Songbirds like robins, waxwings, and pine grosbeaks depend on fruit through winter. Redpolls love birch seeds and crossbills are attracted to the cones of conifers.

A great year-round birding strategy is to look and listen for chickadees. Their presence often indicates that other birds are nearby. These often include nuthatches, woodpeckers, kinglets, goldfinches, sparrows, and juncos. By pishing—softly, but rapidly repeating the word “pish”—these other species will reveal themselves as they fly in close to investigate the source of the unusual sound. To see and hear pishing in action, Google “Pishing in fall warblers” and then head outside to practice.

Another common approach to winter birding is to drive backroads and scan the trees for highly visible species such as hawks, ruffed grouse and owls. Dawn and dusk is best for the latter two. Check roadside shrubs for American tree sparrows and farm fields with grain stubble or freshly-spread manure for snow buntings and horned larks. Finches like crossbills are attracted to roadside grit, especially after a plow passes by. Finally, the open water of bays and rivers is always worth scanning for overwintering waterfowl decked out in spectacular breeding plumage.

Great Backyard Bird Count Similar to a Christmas Bird Count, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is another citizen-science bird survey.

It’s also more suitable for children than a CBC. The 2024 count will be held February 16 - 19. You simply tally the numbers and species of birds you observe over the course of 15 minutes or more, at least once over the four days. You can count from any location—a backyard feeder, for example—for as long as you wish. You then use the eBird app or website to submit your checklist(s).

The Argyle

BY LORI NELSON “It is fast, commodious and very steady and is perfectly arranged for the purpose for which she is intended. The promenade deck has an awning, and a seat extends the full length each side of the boat, so that it will be a cool place to ride in.” This description of the latest addition to Captain Clifford Lewis’ fleet of steamboats was published in the July 6, 1900, edition of the Rat Portage Miner. His new ferryboat, the Argyle, would provide service between Keewatin and Rat Portage (now Kenora).

The boat’s service for the summer started as soon as the lake was navigable, which was often in the early weeks of May, but each year was different depending on the ice melt. In 1904, Captain Lewis was sporting a new suit, hat and watch as a result of a wager he had made with three local businessmen who predicted that he would not be able to bring his steamer into its dock until April 30.

He steamed in a day early, much to the chagrin of the owners of Mackenzie & Co., Graham & Co., and G.M. Rioch Jewellers.

Captain Lewis was well acquainted with the transportation needs of those living on Lake of the Woods and Rainy River. He ran a fleet of steamboats—among them, the Swallow, a sternwheeler; the Phantom; the Highland Maid; the Shamrock, known as the Settlers’ Friend; and the Maple Leaf. Most were engaged in passenger traffic between Rainy River and Rat Portage. The Maple Leaf was the Royal mail steamer which also, on occasion, was called into service to transport passengers and freight.

Lewis operated the Argyle for five seasons before putting her up for sale. Her second owner, James Fraser, a contractor and government bridge inspector, paid approximately $10,000 for the boat. Captain Frank Brydges continued as captain, Alfred Fraser was taken on as purser, and the chief engineer was James Eldridge.

But there was one transportation route that Lewis had not been involved in until the launch of his Argyle. With no highway connecting the three communities of Rat Portage, Norman and Keewatin, there was an opportunity to provide a ferry service and Lewis was quick to get on board.

The hull, keel and ribs of the 59.5-foot boat were prefabricated in the east and brought by rail to Keewatin where the boat was assembled under the supervision of the designer Bob Morrell and builder Charles F. Smith. The Argyle began its ferry service in the summer of 1900. Its arrival on the lake was noted as a “step ahead for Rat Portage” by the writer at the Rat Portage Miner.

The steamboat did brisk business carrying passengers between the three communities. Passengers could purchase monthly or seasonal passes. The steamer could also be chartered for special excursions on the lake. One such outing was announced through the local newspaper in which all church choir members of the various congregations in the community were invited on an evening cruise around Coney Island on the Argyle, courtesy of Captain Lewis.

Improvements to the boat were made under Fraser's ownership.

During the winter of 1908/09, the Argyle was overhauled and painted, and she was converted from wood fuel to coal fuel. This tightened up the ferry’s schedule, as it no longer needed to stop for close to an hour in Norman to load wood.

Further improvements were made in 1912 when ownership expanded to include Robert Stanley Fraser in partnership with James Fraser. The boat was lengthened to 79 feet. Its draft and beam were also increased. It continued its regular schedule which by the late 1920s saw the boat running six times daily between Keewatin and Kenora on weekdays, four times daily on the weekends, with special trips to the Methodist Literary Association Camp on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The hard work schedule of the Argyle began to take its toll and by the mid-1930s, the hull was deemed past repair and unsafe.

Investing in a new boat seemed to be the more logical and prudent course of action. The first Argyle was removed from service and the Argyle II took its place in 1936.

While the Argyle II is more familiar to many of us, its ferry service was the continuing story of the decades-long career of the first Lake of the Woods Argyle. an
