CATCH MANY DIFFERENT SPECIES IN A SINGLE DAY One of the best things about fishing in Sunset Country is the variety. Start your day with walleye or panfish for a shore lunch, then chase trophy pike, muskie, or trout in the afternoon, and finish with feisty bass in the evening. Or stick to walleye all day— the choice is yours!
WALLEYE
PIKE
Walleye are the main draw for many anglers, known for their excellent taste and abundance in our lakes. These fish have a striking gold color, sometimes with a green or blue tint. Jigging with live bait at 20 to 30 feet is a reliable method, though they also go for a variety of artificial lures.
Northern pike are known for being big and fierce, earning their reputation as top predators in many lakes. Some can reach over 45 inches and 30 pounds. Anglers love using large jerk baits or spoons near rock piles, sunken timber, or weed lines. When a big one strikes, make sure you’ve got a strong leader!

MUSKIE
Sunset Country is home to both smallmouth and largemouth bass, though smallies are more common. Known for their fight, they offer a wild and exciting catch. Use spinner baits, plugs, raps, or plastic lures. If they’re finicky, try a tube jig. Smallmouth can reach up to 6 pounds, with largemouth growing even larger.
For dedicated muskie hunters, Sunset Country is the ultimate destination. These top predators are not only abundant, but super-sized. In some lakes, it’s rare to catch one under 45 inches, and on a good day, you might reel in a monster over 50 inches. There’s nothing like landing a giant muskie here!

CRAPPIE & PERCH
Sunset Country’s clear, deep lakes in the Canadian Shield provide some of the best lake trout fishing in North America. After ice-out, you can spin cast for trout in shallow water, but most of the time, they’re deeper. Down rigging or drop-shotting are effective techniques. Northern rivers here also offer native brook trout.
Though Sunset Country isn’t widely known for panfish, our crappie and perch fishing rivals the best. Black crappie can reach up to 3 pounds and are excellent eating. Try jigging for them in spring, fall, or even through the ice—once you find them, you’ll catch plenty! Perch are abundant and easy to catch.

SHORE LUNCH IN SUNSET COUNTRY BY JEFF GUSTAFSON GUSSYOUTDOORS.COM In Northwest Ontario, shore lunch is a must for many anglers. After catching fresh fish, pulling up to a scenic shoreline for a meal is a tradition everyone loves. As someone who’s cooked over 500 shore lunches since I started guiding on Lake of the Woods at 14, I can say it’s always a hit—and I’ve never left without overeating!
KEY TIPS FOR A GREAT SHORE LUNCH: • Make sure there are no bones in the fish. • Ensure the oil is hot enough by doing a drop test—look for nice bubbles. • Avoid cooking directly on the beach to keep sand out of your meal.
For a simple, tasty batter: 1. Dip the fish in flour. 2. Coat it with egg. 3. Cover it in cornflake crumbs. 4. After frying, sprinkle lemon pepper for extra flavour.
Round out the meal with potatoes, beans, corn, fresh veggies, and bread. Pro tip: Make a checklist before heading out—don’t forget essentials like oil, utensils, and seasonings!

HUNTING TRIP CHECKLIST If you’ve booked your first hunting trip to Ontario’s Sunset Country, here’s what you need to know to ensure a smooth experience: #1 – REGISTERING YOUR FIREARM

You must register your firearm with Canada Customs. Fill out the Canadian Firearms Declaration Form in advance, but remember to sign it in front of a CBSA officer at the border. A registration fee applies.

With vast wilderness and well-maintained trails, Sunset Country is a snowmobiler’s dream. OFSC District 17 volunteer clubs groom kilometers of trails with minimal traffic, offering a smooth and peaceful ride through beautiful landscapes.

SKIING & SNOWBOARDING When the lakes freeze, the fishing heats up in Sunset Country! Enjoy world-class ice fishing for lake trout, walleye, pike, and panfish. Winter fish movements are predictable, making it easier to find a good spot. Once you’re on the fish, the action is nonstop, and you’ll hardly notice the cold! Local outfitters and guides are available to help you find the best spots and provide cozy accommodations after a day on the ice. While Sunset Country isn’t a major downhill destination, it has fun hills for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding. Mount Evergreen Ski Hill in Kenora, along with slopes in Dryden, Atikokan, and Thunder Bay, offer hours of winter fun.

SUMMER
As snow and ice melt, green grass and budding trees signal the arrival of spring. Wildlife, like newborn fawns, start to appear. Late-season ice fishing is a great way to enjoy the warmth of the spring sun, and ice-out trout fishing is some of the best you’ll find.
Summer is perfect for water sports, swimming, and relaxing on the beach. The lakes warm up by mid-June, and the fishing remains excellent, though the fish move to different spots. Enjoy long, sunny days filled with fishing, kayaking, camping, and beautiful sunsets. Many major events happen between May and September.

WINTER
Fall brings stunning colours as the leaves turn. Cooler temperatures make it ideal for hiking, paddling, and sitting around a campfire. The fish become more active, with crappie, bass, walleye, and muskie fishing at its peak. Fall is also prime time for bear, moose, grouse, and deer hunting.
By late November or early December, snow blankets the ground, and once the lakes freeze, it’s time for snowmobiling and ice fishing. Trout season kicks off in January, and despite the cold, winter is packed with activities like ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and more.

DO I NEED A PASSPORT?
Sunset Country spans the northwest corner of Ontario, directly north of Minnesota.
