Whether you are a virtual visitor or are visiting live and in person, I feel compelled to share some of the many attributes of Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls. First of all as Mayor, and on behalf of Council and staff, let me welcome you to our fair community. I have lived here for fifty years and feel qualified to expound on its uniqueness.
Our community features abundant natural beauty being situated on the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods. We are also surrounded by many other smaller lakes which are well known for their beauty and angling potential. After all, our claim to fame is sport fishing. For the avid angler we have every freshwater fish you might want to chase. For those inclined to eating
rather than catching fish, we have restaurants, just waiting to serve up the catch of the day: you will find them in the heart of our small communities and tucked away, in the backwoods, down long and winding roads. To get your beats per minute amped up, Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls is home to numerous hiking trails to explore, lakes to paddle, and places of interest to discover. Should you need to test your golfing skills, visit White Moose Golf Course where your greatest hazard might be the deer on the fairway or the thieving fox who collects golf balls.
And, when you come in from the great outdoors, there’s plenty of art to go around in Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls. Gallery openings, concerts in coffee houses, and fairs and festivals are peppered throughout the events page and can be found absolutely everywhere – from under the Big Top to repurposed curling rinks and artist studios. From poetry readings to arts and craft fairs, there is something for everyone. I encourage you to take in

We have lakefront tourist camps, two provincial parks [ Caliper Lake and Sioux Narrows ], numerous restaurants and gift shops all ready to cater to your every need. We are easily accessible with several airports within a few hours drive. If visiting, enjoy your stay. If online, come visit in person. I know our little community will capture your heart and will beckon you to come again and again and again.

The reward at the start of a vacation or weekend is to pack a bag, fuel up, and head to a destination where you leave the worry behind. No matter where you come from, your first impression of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls is one of outstanding natural beauty: oldgrowth pine forests and tumbling falls, secret coves and the promise of the lake of the woods. The granite and the Canadian Shield – is everywhere. This is what we offer…awe at the foot of the red pine tree, a gasp at the sight of an old-world muskie, a sigh of pleasure from a pint of local, handcrafted beer…and our welcome.
Whether you seek an inspiring experience in nature, a restorative retreat or a locale in which to reflect and create, The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls offers bountiful opportunities for artistic expression and connection.
The call to explore, discover, and document the natural beauty of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls has drawn people from all over the world, helping to create the unique communities on the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods. Just look around at the works of renowned local artists in many of the Township’s restaurants, lodges, and camps. The communities also host cultural events throughout the year: art fairs, music festivals, and creative residencies.
Collectors of unique arts and crafts will revel in the local shoppes and fairs, that sell these one-of-a-kind creations, some of which have been around for decades. Purchase a photograph, painting, carving or a sculpted canoe made from locally harvested birchbark to remind you of your visit or, better yet, meet a master writer, wood worker or painter at one of our many art festivals or community events. Indulge and deepen your own creativity.
Cultural resilience comes in many forms. If you have a green thumb and are here for the summer, you might want to plant some seeds and set down roots in the community garden in Sioux Narrows, right next to the 55+ Centre. Or perhaps, you are interested in diving deep into your artistic practice? We offer week long residencies, all summer long, in tiny studios – inspired by the love of this land and designed to connect people to the natural surroundings. Google the Bridge & Falls Creative Residency for an opportunity to immerse yourself in an artistic adventure of your very own making.
Spend some time here, and you’ll find that we adventure differently. Amp up or chill out. Charge or recharge. Take in big nature or a little culture. The choice is all yours.
Nestled in Regina Bay is a little, hidden gem – beautiful and lush Sioux Narrows Provincial Park. It is picturesque and peaceful. Sioux Narrows Provincial Park is ideal for the lake lover: boating, swimming, sailing, and world-class fishing eagerly await. If a quiet get-away is what you seek, look no further than the woodsy oasis on Caliper Lake. Walk among Caliper’s towering old-growth red and white pine trees. Both parks offer welcoming day-use areas: sandy beaches for swimming and open green spaces for throwing a frisbee. Playgrounds and a covered pavilion with barbecues offer amenities to help create an unforgettable experience with family and friends.

Get ready to be a happy camper! Your outdoor adventure awaits. With two incredible provincial parks, sandy beaches, hidden coves, and lonely islands, Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls is the perfect place to get away from it all.
1. After cooking a meal, fill a pan of water and leave it on the stove/ fire, so the water will be warm enough for clean up.
2. Bring a throw rug or welcome mat to place in front of your tent/ camper. A small broom and dustpan are a must-have as well.
3. A crumpled ball of foil makes an excellent scouring pad for pots and pans.
4. To save time and prep work, create a bin of essential items that you can keep packed and ready-to-go. Make sure the bin is rain and rodent proof.
5. Bring two coolers – one for drinks only and the other for food. This will help keep the food cooler from being opened and closed too many times.
6. Hang soap in a stocking or sock from a tree to keep it off the ground and clean.
7. While it’s best to cook on coals, sometimes you have to cook directly on open flames. For easier cleaning, run the outside of your pots with dish soap. Allow it to dry and then cook with them. This will make the black soot come off easier.
8. Don’t overpack. Pots and pans can be used as mixing bowls to save room, and heavy duty aluminum foil can be used to cook vegetables and meats on or in the fire.
9. Always pack duct tape. It’s useful for many things.
10. To keep marshmallows from burning dip them in water before holding them over the flame.
The plan may have been to come to Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls for a relaxing get-away. But there are many other options, so get ready for Plan B! A land of many terrains, the communities of Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls on the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods are the ideal destinations for the adventurous traveler looking to explore by land and water in a single trip. From hiking and cycling to boating and kayaking, and everything in between, there’s no shortage of adventure opportunities in the great outdoors.
With 14,522 islands and more than 100,000km of shoreline, Lake of the Woods lures canoeists and kayakers for lazy floats in quiet bays and more adrenaline-fueled outings in stretches of open water. Mountain bike riders and hikers heed the call of the old-growth pine forests with their myriad of trails and leafy landscapes.
So, however you like to enjoy the great outdoors, Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls is tailor-made for you. We dare you: just try to resist the waves and wilderness!
Expert anglers share tips on how paying attention to weather conditions and phases of the Moon can set you up for success! Fishing season is well underway for many fishermen across the country. And, Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls sports some of the best freshwater fishing spots in North America! Whether it’s fishing with night crawlers or using your favourite jig, fishing at the right time can prove to be the difference between tight and slack lines.
The weather plays a role in fishing: #airtemperature #sunorclouds #heavyrain #barometricpressure. And, rumour has it that the phases of the Moon can affect fish activity greatly. Like deer, fish are most active during the few days before and after a full and new Moon. These times can be especially productive if the Moonrise or Moonset coincides with the sunrise or sunset. One great source for exact times are the calendar pages in the Farmers’ Almanac.
Here you can find solitude and beauty around every bend, and escape from the everyday grind of the outside world. Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls is also home to many one-of-a-kind experiences, beloved by visitors old and new. Whether it’s watching the weigh-ins at a fishing derby or splurging on the perfect keepsake for a loved one, every day brings a new discovery and new memories to last a lifetime.

Decades of tradition are here to be experienced in the wilds of northwestern Ontario. Appreciated as a place where a deep respect for the land is expressed in artisanal carvings, local, fresh, handcrafted beers, and farm to fork
foods: northwestern Ontario is where the great outdoors is the gateway to explore and discover our past and present. Whether you are traveling on Highway 17, Canada’s one and only national highway, making your way
up to Vermilion Bay or touring around Highway 11 and stepping back in time as you visit the Manitou Mounds, making northwestern Ontario your next holiday will lead to a new favourite get-away destination!
The communities of Sioux NarrowsNestor Falls welcome you to the traditional territory of the Ojibway people. We follow in the footsteps of their ancestors. We invite teachings from their elders. We recognize and respect the 94 calls to action that are set out in the Truth and Reconciliation report. In the words of Justice Murray Sinclair: “Education is what got us here and education is what will get us out”. Education is the cornerstone for change.
“It’s good to know that Turtle Island was occupied by First Nations people since time immemorial. We’ve always been here,” says Yerxa. Allan Yerxa is the land and resources coordinator for Couchiching First Nation and was instrumental in the development and creation oft the Canadian First Nations pre-European contract map of Turtle Island. He worked closely with mapmaker, Aaron Carapella –a Cherokee Indian from Oklahoma. That the inspiration and makers of the map have a connection to a people and a First Nation in such close proximity, geographically, to our small community of Nestor Falls truly demonstrates the inter-connectedness of all things.
In 2017, people from all walks of life, from coast to coast to coast, celebrated 150 years and Canada’s sesquicentennial. But, that milestone is in light of thousands upon thousands of years of Indigenous history in this country, way before Confederation. The map above, may help newcomers and tourists imagine what Canada looked like before lines and borders defined provinces and territories, when it was known as Turtle Island.
Neighbouring First Nations include: Naotkamegwanning First Nation, Northwest Angle #37, Northwest Angle #33, and the Ojibways of Onigaming. We encourage you to learn more about their great traditions, language and cultural ways by attending community feasts and Pow Wows! It is a way for non-Indigenous people and Indigenous people to come together in harmony and understanding bringing hope to this generation and the many to come.
The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls enjoys regionally inspired and local foods: from farmed bison to grass-fed cattle to waters abounding with walleye and lake trout. Did someone say “Walleye”? The easiest way to find local foods from purveyors and producers is at farmers’ markets around the region. If it is a view you’re craving, there’s a multitude of lodges and restaurants, along the waters edge, with breathtaking views of our many rivers and lakes
