Distinguished Speaker: Judge Richard Dietz (JD ʼ02) The Honorable Richard Dietz serves as a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. The first person in his family to attend college, Judge Dietz earned a bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2002.

After law school, he served as a judicial law clerk before working as a research fellow at Kyushu University in Japan, studying comparative and international law issues. Judge Dietz developed his appellate practice at two large law firms, one in Washington, D.C., and another in North Carolina. He has been active in the North Carolina Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Section.

Governor Pat McCrory appointed Judge Dietz to the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 2014.

Two features of Judge Dietz’s career may hold particular interest for the graduating classes of 2020 and 2021. First, he walks the walk in pro bono practice, providing free appellate work to low-income families, indigent criminal defendants, and nonprofits that assist the less fortunate.

Second, he is a superlative writer. From crystal clear appellate opinions to innovative “animated treatises” on social media, Judge Dietz has a gift for explaining the law to a wide range of readers.
