Station upgrades almost complete

The new Featherston and Greytown ÿ re stations are getting closer to completion, with Minister of Internal Affairs Jan Tinetti recently announcing opening schedules for the two bases. JOHN LAZO-RON reports.

If you haven’t made your way to Greytown in a while, you may be surprised to see the former fire station no longer standing where it was but replaced with a much bigger and nearly complete facility.

The Greytown fire station is part of 26 fire stations around New Zealand, including Featherston, currently on a priority upgrading list, mainly for seismic and earthquake strengthening.

Construction started on both stations early this year.

They may be the stars of upcoming musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but a group of Wairarapa actors were the ones left with stars in their eyes after spending time with the original famous magical flying vehicle.

The starstruck cast from the Masterton Theatre Company travelled down to Wellington for a photo shoot with the famous car in the leadup to the show’s opening night at the Majestic Theatre on June 24.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a children’s movie made back in 1968, which featured the Pott’s family and their car, which could drive, float and fly.

New Zealand film director Sir Peter Jackson, bought the car in 2011, and was known to take the vintage car to air displays, such as Masterton’s Hood Aerodrome, and allowing children and charitable groups’ have time with it.

Show director Marilyn Bouzaid was simply lost for words when she had her first glimpse of the

“Absolutely fabulous, just marvellous,” she said.

“The crew have been so excited for today – they haven’t stopped talking about it.

Bouzaid wasn’t the only one gobsmacked by the car.

Trish Edwards, who was part of the show’s chorus, likened seeing the car to meeting an A-list Hollywood actor.

“I’m immensely excited right now,” Edwards told Times-Age as she looked upon the car.

“I’m actually completely starstruck by it. I watched it a lot as a child, so to me

this is like seeing a famous film star, not just a car.”

Edwards’ daughter Ruby was also at the photo shoot as she was cast as Jemima, one of two children in the play who help father and eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts restore an old race car from a scrap heap that becomes the flying vehicle.

Bouzaid said this was the first time the Masterton Theatre Company had put on the well-renowned show.

They had originally planned for it to go ahead last year before covid-19 disrupted those plans.

She said the play had generated a lot of interest since they announced they would be staging the famous production, with tickets selling well.

“Every time I’ve said Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to people, their eyes light up,” she said.

“This production is going to appeal to people young and old. I think with the older generation it’s going to bring back a lot of memories for them, so it’s great.

While celebrating International Firefighters’ Day last month, Tinetti said that work was progressing on the stations due to Government funding through the covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund to rebuild or upgrade the stations.

Featherston was funded $499,000 mainly for a new BA [Breathing Apparatus] room, while Greytown was funded $4.48 million for a complete rebuild.

She said the upgrades were vital for firefighters’

“I’m incredibly proud of the fact we are able to give these wonderful people such up-to-date facilities,” she said.

“I’ve been going around the country, and Wairarapa is similar to other areas where I’ve been opening new stations, and the difference a new facility makes to [the volunteer firefighters] role and to what they’re able to do is just incredible.

“Being a volunteer often means missing family events or having to leave work to respond to calls for help, so I am very pleased

this funding will provide our firefighters with the fit-for-purpose fire stations they need.”

If anyone knew the Greytown Fire Station was due an upgrade, it was Wairarapa MP Kieran McAnulty.

Before McAnulty put on the suits for parliament, he donned a firefighter’s kit as a volunteer firefighter with the Greytown brigade.

McAnulty said he was passionate about seeing improvements being made to both stations and even asked Tinetti about it in parliament.

“As a former volunteer myself, I’m passionate about the fire service.

And so, I’m delighted the stations at Greytown and Featherston are receiving an upgrade,” he said.

“The Greytown brigade, where I first joined the service, are specialists in crash rescue and service much of the Wairarapa Valley.

“Their station was overdue an upgrade when I joined 11 years ago. I remember it had a drain running underneath it, which would often get blocked.”

He said the Featherston crew have a vast area to cover, often heading down to assist the southern coast and incidents on the Remutaka

Hill or the rail line.

“Every town and rural area in Wairarapa is serviced by volunteers, and as our region grows, it becomes even more crucial that our brigades are adequately resourced.

“Their station [Featherston] is of a similar vintage to Greytown, and the improvements will be welcome in the close-knit community.”

Tinetti said McAnulty always reminded her of the service Wairarapa firefighters bring to the region.

“Kieran McAnulty makes certain I’m always keeping the firefighters in the

Wairarapa right at the top of my mind,” she said.

“I sit near him in the house and I must have heard it maybe 30 times this year,” she quipped.

“He’s a very good advocate for them.”

Tinetti said she planned to be there for both openings and reiterated her thanks towards Wairarapa firefighters and their families.

“Thank you for your gift of service to the Wairarapa, but I also want to give a big shout out to their whanau and their friends as well because they walk this journey very much alongside the fire personnel.”

When Rachel Millar’s best friend’s daughter Brady was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma cancer and sent immediately into intensive care, she wanted to show her full support by shaving her hair off while raising money for the Cancer Society.

After discussing doing the cut at Greytown School, where Millar is a teachers aide, a June 4 date was agreed to, with a couple of students also putting their hand up to get their locks chopped.

Sadly, Brady passed away in April, just a couple of weeks off her 17th birthday and well before the haircut date had come to pass.

However, despite Brady’s passing, Millar still went ahead with the chop to raise funds for cancer and remember Brady.

“It felt like unfinished business,” Millar told Midweek.

“When it comes to cancer, there’s nothing you can do [physically] that’s going to help them, but I felt at the time like this was something I could do that

might make Brady feel a bit better.

“The Cancer Society did so much for [Brady’s family], and do so much for people who have cancer and for families who have children with cancer that we don’t know about. So it just felt like the right thing to do.

“Doing this seemed like a great way to make money for them and to remember Brady.”

Millar said Brady had given her full support for the idea, telling her to be brave and strong.

Millar’s eight-year-old daughter, Amelia, and fellow Greytown School students Violet Morison and Hunter Tobin jumped in on the act with their own solid reasons as to why they wanted to show their support.

Violet, 8, had grandparents who went

through cancer. She said seeing them lose their hair was difficult for her.

“My Grandma and grandpa both had cancer, and I think it’s really hard for people who have cancer when they lose their hair,” she said.

“So I shaved my hair to donate it and help with cancer.

“The fact that lots of children who are younger than us have cancer just

isn’t fair because they didn’t do anything to deserve it.”

Hunter, 9, had similar motives.

“The main reason for me was people are losing their hair and getting sick and stuff,” he said.

“These people don’t deserve to have cancer, so shaving my head is showing that they’re not alone and they’re going to be ok.

You’re going to be fixed.”

Amelia said she wanted to support her mum but also Brady, who she knew well.

“I wanted to shave my hair for cancer because my mum was doing it,” she said.

“And because it was

really sad that Brady died.

I wanted to do this for her too.”

Greytown School staged a mufti-day [non-uniform] for the school kids in support of the day and collected $500 for the cause.

Hairdressers from the SR hair salon in Greytown came in to do the cutting free of charge.

All four said they were happy they went through with it, raising more than $6000 for the cause in the meantime.

“It’s just unthinkable to see one of your friends go through something like that, so I’m glad I did it,” Millar said.

“Raising money for organisations like the Cancer Society, Ronald McDonald House, Child Cancer, and Leukemia Foundation is something we should all look into.”

“I’m happy somebody will get a wig from my hair,” Violet said.

Asked what their initial reaction was to see their heads shaved, Hunter quipped, “Um, we have no hair.”

A Wairarapa primary school has become a trailblazer in the creative learning movement after a three-year project led to a shift in its teaching.

Douglas Park School in Masterton was the only primary school in the region and one of only about 35 schools nationwide to be selected by the Ministry of Education [MoE] to complete a Teacher-led Innovation Fund [TLIF] project.

Beginning in 2018, the TLIF project looked at the concept of ‘maker pedagogy’, a system of teaching that helped students to develop critical and creative thinking skills.

Douglas Park School principal Gareth Sinton said the project had confirmed his school’s hunch that including more hands-on components in lessons would aid students’ understanding of the subjects.

He said before the introduction of National Standards at the beginning of the 2010 school year, creative elements had been more commonplace in classrooms.

“It would have been more common, but maybe not to the skilled degree that we’re seeing the kids at now,” he said.

“We’ve got kids who are very capable at 3D design and printing, coding robots, making mini-games from scratch.”

“The National Standards era really meant that schools focussed in on reading, writing, and maths, and a lot of the other stuff disappeared,” Sinton said.

However, the TLIF project demonstrated that more creative classes could coexist alongside the core subjects of literacy and maths.

“Our results are the same now as during the Standards era in terms of reading, writing, and maths, but we would say that we have far richer kids now in terms of their ability as an academic person and as a creative person.”

Rather than living solely as consumers – watching TV shows or playing computer games – students could create the world they lived in.

“It’s the idea that we can teach kids the return of the number 8 wire mentality, and the idea that we can help our kids bring their ideas to life – entrepreneurship. You don’t just have to buy a thing; you could make your own thing.”

Teachers for different year levels had different approaches to implementing creative learning in their classes.

Years 0-2 focus on

establishing a play-based environment in which students could decide how to use tools for making and creating.

In one example, students used popsicle sticks and rubber bands to make a propellor for a Jolly Rogers toy boat.

In Years 3 and 4, students built on their play-based learning, expanding their use of creativity to solve problems such as how to strengthen a model whare.

In Years 5 and 6, the maker pedagogy was integrated into the school’s literacy programme.

Students would use their Chapter Chat reading programme as a launchpad to then design something based on what they had read.

“I would love it if all of our kids viewed themselves as content creators,” Sinton said. “That would be a really excellent outcome”.

The MoE provided about $70,000 in funding for the project, with the caveat that a report would be presented online for other schools to use as a resource.

The findings of Douglas Park’s project were written up in 2020 and formed the basis for the report, called “Developing key competencies and digital capabilities through maker spaces: preparing future capable learners”.

It was a homecoming for Inspector Rob Rutene as he walked onto Te Rangimarie Marae last week.

Rangitane o Wairarapa and Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa welcomed Rutene onto the marae and into his new role as Wellington District’s Maori Responsiveness Manager [MRM].

The powhiri marked Rutene’s return to the Wellington region and to Wairarapa after being away for 13 years.

“I’m just happy to be home,” Rutene said.

“I’m working in Wellington, based in Wellington, but I’ll be over here regularly. I want to be part of the community again – because when you go away, things change a little bit. It’s just good to be home.”

Rutene started his career in Masterton in 1996 after Maori police officers he played rugby with convinced him to attend an information seminar.

While working the beat in Masterton, Rutene soon realised his passion for working

alongside Maori communities.

From 2001, he delivered a drug education programme within kura kaupapa Maori [Maori language immersion schools] across the Wellington District, which enhanced his knowledge of Te Ao Maori, the Maori worldview.

For seven years after that, he worked as an iwi liaison coordinator in

Wairarapa, followed by six years in Hawke’s Bay. In 2014, Rutene had been pivotal in establishing one of the first Te Pae Oranga Iwi Community panels while based in Gisborne.

The panels served as a way for police and iwi to work together to prevent offenders from reoffending.

A 2019 evaluation of Te Pae Oranga indicated the success of these panels, showing they

reduced harm from reoffending by 22 per cent.

For the past two years, Rutene had served as practice leader for Maori responsiveness at the Royal New Zealand Police College [RNZPC].

At yesterday’s powhiri, he joked that the RNZPC had been a good place to pick up a promotion. He would now wear three stars on his epaulette in recognition of his new title.

Despite the recognition, Rutene would continue in the theme of his career in his new role as MRM: working together with Maori communities.

The role would also involve working alongside Pacific and ethnic communities.

The Wellington District which Rutene would cover included 22 police stations, about 900 staff, and an area extending from Wellington City almost up to Eketahuna and including the Chatham Islands.

He would take up a guardianship role for the district, working with a long-term goal in mind.

“Guardianship is really about ensuring that we do good things, not just for us but for future generations – those who are coming behind us,” Rutene said.

Such guardianship involved the movement within police to include more of the values of tikanga Maori [values and customs].

The role had a focus on preparing for the future and any unexpected events it might hold.

“Covid is a good example – preparing for another outbreak, perhaps, or another pandemic. Or a disaster like an earthquake.”

Many of Rutene’s friends and colleagues spoke at the powhiri, with Rangitane o Wairarapa cultural advisor Mike Kawana leading proceedings.

Rutene’s friend Mohi Apou lightened the mood by drawing attention to the fact that four of the speakers came from the same school: Hato Paora.

Wellington District Commander Corrie Parnell welcomed Rutene to his team, saying he already enacted positive change within the role.

UCOL and WorkSafe pilot a risk-assessment project WorkSafe New Zealand and UCOL are teaming up with a new learning initiative that will help construction students further develop their skills in assessing and managing work risks.

The Kia Oho Ake pilot is a health and safety education initiative by WorkSafe.

WorkSafe inspectors will join UCOL students in the classroom to help them learn how to safely identify, assess, and manage work risks, as well as strategies for communicating concerns onsite.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for UCOL, and we’re thrilled for our students to learn directly from the experts at Worksafe,” UCOL’s Health and Safety manager, Sylvie Hickton, said.

“This pilot will enable our students to be more knowledgeable and prepared, and these additional learning experiences are going to be helpful when they’re applying for jobs.

“In turn, our local employers will benefit by getting graduates who already have these skills and are ready to get stuck in and contribute to any

Wairarapa’s first workshop kicked off two weeks ago, with 19 students taking part.

Student Daniel Ries, who is hoping to make tiny homes in future, enjoyed the session.

“I think it was a good session,” he said.

“It was good to take the time to focus on safety, to reflect on how we can do it better. We did lots of tasks and games then worked in groups to discuss it all.

I think it will help us be more conscious and think more thoroughly.”

Seventy-four construction students across three UCOL campuses would participate, with programmes in Horowhenua and Manawatu also.

Workshops would be held throughout the year.

learners the skills this industry is demanding,” UCOL’s Executive Dean Engineering and Applied Technologies, Danny Reilly, said.

“WorkSafe have said that the construction sector is a key focus for them, and our graduates will be helping make sites safer.”

Mauriceville School students and teachers recently had a fun day learning about and creating mosaic artwork pieces when they took a day trip to the Yebo Art Studio in Featherston.

The school students learned about recycling by using broken china plates which would usually have landed in the rubbish bin.

Once they had

chosen and decided on a design, they glued the pieces down and filled up the spaces they had.

Creating the mosaics engaged the students, who enjoyed choosing from the wide range of colours and textures of tile and china available for them.

Mosaic is an artistic way for children to learn brain-hand coordination.

health. The increase in types & varieties has also opened the door to many more landscaping options. Roses don’t have to be placed out of sight anymore – their winter bareness can be disguised by many other trees & shrubs and they can be incorporated into home gardens in many ways.

WINTER DORMANCY Roses are deciduous – they go into dormancy in winter, which basically means they shed their leaves and go into rest mode. The timing of this can be weather dependent – if the weather is mild it may be delayed. Although a short winter sounds good for us, the longer it takes the plant to shut down for winter, the shorter the resting time. Having a dormant period every year boosts their health and you will be rewarded with strong healthy plants that find it easier to fight pests & diseases.

At this early stage of winter there is quite likely lots of rose bushes that are still covered in foliage, and maybe even flowers, and it may be tempting to just leave them be and let nature run its course. Often that is no problem, and a spray with copper and oil will suffice.

However, if your plants have had any problems with fungus, disease or pests during the growing season, then a cleanup spray with Lime Sulphur is recommended.

Lime Sulphur is both a fungicide and an insecticide. It helps control many over-wintering pests such as mites, insects & eggs. It’s the most effective treatment to combat fungal diseases and it removes lichen

Carterton’s annual midwinter festival returns next month with an eclectic schedule of heartand stomach-warming activities.

This year’s Carterton Heart of Winter Festival would align with the start of school holidays, running from July 9-18.

The dates would also cross over with Greytown’s month-long Festival of Christmas.

Destination Wairarapa marketing manager Barbara Hyde said the events would ensure the region had another bumper July.

“Like marquee events such as Wings Over Wairarapa, the Carterton Heart of Winter Festival and Greytown’s Festival of Christmas are hugely significant in helping position the region as an interesting and exciting place to come and stay,” Hyde said.

“Most important, I think, is that they engender a sense of community because they provide wonderful opportunities for local families and friends to enjoy being together.”

A rink had been a feature of the festival programme in 2018, although that rink had been constructed from plastic.

Carterton Events Centre sales and marketing coordinator Jenni Hall likened the surface of the former rink to the spongy crashmats at a playground for kids.

“It was like that but with a coat on it that meant you could sort of pretend to ice-

skate on it,” Hall said.

Former Carterton District Council [CDC] community services and facilities manager Carrie Mckenzie had likened the fake snow in an adjoining snow dome to “the insides of nappies when wet”.

However, Hall said this year’s rink would be nothing like its predecessor.

“We heard what everyone said. We know where the mistakes were made, and we’re more than making up for it this year.”

Whereas the 2018 synthetic ice rink was about 80m2, this year’s real ice rink was about 160m2.

Patrons would also be able to purchase tickets to all events online well in advance of the festival to avoid the frustration of missing out on tickets at the door. Tickets for a session on the rink were available for $15 per adult, $10 per child, or $50 for a family pass of two adults and three children.

Hall said the tickets were priced to break even with the cost of hiring the rink.

CDC would coordinate the festival in partnership with Wairarapa Building Society [WBS]. Staff from WBS would be on hand to help at the ice-skating rink,

as well as many of the other community events.

“We love the fact that CDC has listened to the community and brought back the festival bigger and better than ever,” WBS chief executive officer Paul Bywater said.

“It’s something that resonates strongly with us at WBS and we know the event is going to be something special for our community, which is why we are excited to be involved.”

Other events within the 10-day festival included night markets, a minicraft beer festival, and an immersive theatre experience.

More daring festivalgoers could show their solidarity with Mayor Greg Lang as he took a midwinter dip in the Ruamahunga River.

Fellow plungers could then warm themselves up with a complimentary mulled wine and discounted pizza at the Gladstone Inn. “Poor Greg,” Hall said.

“We’re tossing up the idea of a mankini versus a bikini versus a wetsuit. I’m not sure how we’re going to decide what way we’re going to go with that.”

Hall suggested the crowd could decide Lang’s fate.

Keep your distance This isn’t the first time I’ve written about this, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

The endless tailgating on Wairarapa roads is beyond ridiculous.

Considering I’ve been making the 90-pluskilometre commute from Wellington to Masterton almost on a daily basis, I believe I am well-equipped to give my opinion on this.

I can’t recall ever going one trip without seeing someone riding up extremely close to the backside of another vehicle, or even my own.

It’s a never-ending nuisance, which means that despite the number of times I have seen it, the annoyance of it doesn’t wear off.

And in the past fortnight, I believe the tailgaters have come out in abundance, and considering the weather has started to change with more rain coming in, I thought it was a good time to address it.

There isn’t a law to my knowledge regarding how far you should keep yourself from a vehicle in front of you, but the New Zealand Transport Agency [NZTA] does have a recommended safe

The two-second rule [under normal conditions] is an easy way to ensure you have allowed enough following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front, no matter what speed you’re travelling at.

The thing is, under worse conditions, when a road is wet or slippery, there is even a ‘foursecond’ rule.

If drivers struggle with the two-second rule, how do you think people go with that rule?

I’m not 100 per cent sure why people choose to tailgate, but I’m guessing it’s mainly a way of saying to the driver in front of them to hurry up.

Don’t get me wrong, it is very frustrating when you have a car or truck slowing you down on the road, especially when you are trying to get somewhere at a specific time.

But there’s nothing you can do about it unless the car pulls over or there is a passing lane.

So why make matters worse. If a vehicle is driving specifically slow, there will always be a strong chance they’ll have a heavy foot and brake faster, potentially putting you both in danger. And if something unfortunate did happen in this instance, well, who’s fault is it that you are so close behind that vehicle?

In another scenario, a tailgater tends to be in a hurry. So the moment they get a chance to take over, they take off, bringing more possible dangers related to speed.

Do I believe tailgating will stop or slow down?

Unfortunately, no.

However, I’ll do my part and let people know of the damage it can cause.

Keep your distance, even in a hurry, especially with winter here.

We celebrate the opening of Pukana We hurried from Aratoi’s main door around the corner into Dixon St to join the crowd waiting at the waharoa. We had been busily preparing for the refreshments to be served after Pūkana’s opening ceremony. We knew we would be joining the back of the crowd, but we were surprised by the number of people in front of us in the small courtyard, over 200 at least, and all ages: a sleeping weeks-old baby in her carry capsule, rangatahi and those somewhat older.

Jo Torr, registrar at Aratoi, along with Susanna Shadbolt, the director, developed the National Library’s exhibition that had already been devised by three curators from the Alexander Turnbull Library.

“We decided to augment the mainly paper-based Pūkana with objects from Aratoi’s collection and some items borrowed from other museums such as Te Papa,” Jo said, ‘so our first step was to make loan requests six months or more before the exhibition opened in Masterton.”

The work continued through that six months, including overseeing the design, as Aratoi, being a small museum and gallery, has no spatial designers. In May, the exhibition was hung, two weeks before the opening.

As the sky above the courtyard darkened, the crowd hushed as kaumātua Mike Kawana,

leading us on the journey through the gallery, punctured the silence with his blessing of the taonga.

This was accompanied by the strident sound of a pūkāea, played by Shane James from Te Papa.

Speeches of welcome and thanks show the range of people who had contributed to this opening. Among those

thanked by Susanna Shadbolt were the staff of the Alexander Turnbull Library and Aratoi, Aratoi’s sponsors, particularly Forsyth Barr as the opening event sponsors, and those, including Masterton District Creative Communities and REAP Wairarapa, whose support has meant that workshops

and events will enhance the exhibition.

She concluded by thanking our two iwi, “with a special thank you to Mike Kawana, Haami Te Whaiti and Makuini Kerehi for all their hard mahi.”

“In addition, she said, “Mike has also composed a waiata and gifted it to Aratoi for this occasion.”

The Aratoi staff then proudly sang it.

Te Kura Kaupapa o Wairarapa Kapa Haka group’s performance during the evening was a highlight. They continued their performance in the gallery after the official part of the evening, as the crowd mingled in the gallery to have a closer look at the taonga.

As the formalities concluded, we, Friends of Aratoi committee members, the ringawera for the evening, dashed off to make our small contribution to the celebration of Pūkana, an exhibition that has been made possible by the mahi of so many.

Thank you, Ro Worley It was a surprise and a delight to be told that Ro Worley, one of Aratoi’s long-term supporters and often to be seen lunching in Entice Café with her friends, had left us a generous bequest in her will.

Ro [Rosemary] was born in Auckland in 1932 and moved to Wairarapa when she married John Worley.

They farmed at Otahome, near Whareama on the coast, for many years before retiring to Little Otahome at Homebush where Ro designed and

planted a spectacular garden, scene of many garden tours.

She taught home economics at St Matthews Collegiate and had a décor shop in Centrepoint for a time.

It would not have been possible to establish a regional museum like Aratoi without the support of people like Ro. She was very interested in the arts and for many years attended exhibition openings and floor talks at Aratoi, often with her closest friend, Helen Dashfield. Aratoi

is lucky to have a very active and loyal Friends Association, who, like Ro, donate time and energy to fundraising and volunteer help. We at Aratoi are profoundly grateful for these acts of generosity.

We plan to apply Ro’s generous gift to our education programme and to our new initiative of installing solar panels for long term energy sustainability. Ro’s name will be permanently commemorated as one of these donors.

June UPDATE MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Despite 1 June being the first day of winter, you would be forgiven for thinking it was still autumn – these early days of June have been relatively cooler, yet sunny and still. I hope you’re making the most of it while you can.

Not everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand has fared the same - our thoughts are with the people of Canterbury, many of whom were affected by the slow-moving storm that passed through in the first week of June.

Locally, we have just completed a rather intense period of consultation with South Wairarapa residents, reading and hearing nearly a thousand submissions to the Long Term and Spatial Plans. Council deliberation took 3 days and we have now agreed our priorities.

Budgets are being calculated and once complete, it will be audited, after which we can communicate the plan and the rate settings for the next 12 months. Thank you again for taking the time to let us know what you think about the plans. Our challenges are many despite being a small region, and we have to walk a fine balance meeting essential community needs, infrastructure upgrades and the cost to the public.

By the time you read this we would have also commemorated the Battle of Messines with

Featherston’s sister city Messines in Belgium.

Although our efforts liberated Messines, 7-9 June 1917 was a particularly dark moment in New Zealand’s history as we suffered 3700 casualties of whom 700 were killed – lest we forget.

The Innovating Streets project is in the final planning stage.

Innovating Streets Martinborough is a Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency funded programme.

This is a temporary installation designed to improve safety and accessibility for a broader spectrum of the public. We heard through our feedback process that residents love their Square – we do too! Similar installations around the country have shown a myriad of direct and indirect positive effects, particularly for young people. Yes, it’s change.

Yes, it’s modern thinking in a classical setting, but the Wairarapa is changing and needs to remain relevant to traditional and new thinking. Preparing and

being open to change, particularly those that improve spaces for the next generation, will improve the town’s resilience in the long term.

Over the past month Martinborough-based Ventana Collective have engaged and inspired local school children to assist with the design work. Local artist Andy Shaw has incorporated the children’s artworks into three fantastic designs for the road works. The community

Will you help save them?

Dear friends, Last week we shared an example of what extinction can really look like – stuffed huia birds behind thick cabinetry glass. A brutal reminder of the reality. Extinction is forever.

Today our native species face huge threats from introduced predators such as rats, stoats, ferrets and possums. They attack nest sites and kill what they find there; native birds, young chicks and eggs.

Already this year in the Pūkaha reserve and surrounding buffer zone – as at the end of April – trappers have caught 59 ferrets, 38 stoats, 1 weasel, 151 wild cats, 397 rats and 393 hedgehogs from over 1000 traps.

If that sounds like a lot, imagine the numbers that exist in areas outside our reserve and buffer zone where trapping is

not active.

What destruction are those predators unleashing on native populations?

Or closer to home, on the native bird species in your very own gardens? And what can you possibly do about it?

Answer: trap and remove those pest species. On June 20 we’re running a predator hunting hui at Pūkaha called Chasing ZERO, which will teach beginners and experienced trappers alike how to be more successful with their trapping.

It will be run by John Bissell our resident trapping expert. He’ll take you into the headspace of target predator species and impart valuable insights to help with your community or backyard trapping programme.

point? How can I possibly make a difference?

Well think of it like this.

Every individual from a target pest species that is caught and removed from the population is one less that can attack and kill a native bird. Your trapping efforts will help.

If you’re still unsure, here’s a quote from Bruce Kyle, the Operations Manager for the Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Group commenting on their trapping efforts to help Aotearoa be predator free by 2050.

“It’s easy to sit back and say oh nah it’s a waste of time, it’s gonna be too hard. Let’s give it a go anyway and see how far we get,

because if we don’t do that we’ll never know.”

Inspector welcomed home Tom Taylor

It was a homecoming for Inspector Rob Rutene as he walked on to Te Rangimarie Marae last week.

Rangitane o Wairarapa and Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa welcomed Rutene on to the marae and into his new role as Wellington District’s Maori Responsiveness Manager [MRM].

The powhiri marked Rutene’s return to the Wellington region and to Wairarapa after being away for 13 years.

“I’m just happy to be home,” Rutene said.

“I’m working in Wellington, based in Wellington, but I’ll be over here regularly. I want to be part of the community again – because when you go away, things change a little bit. It’s just good to be home.”

Rutene started his career in Masterton in 1996 after Maori police officers he played rugby with convinced him to attend an information seminar.

While working the beat in Masterton, Rutene soon realised his passion for working alongside Maori communities.

a drug education programme within kura kaupapa Maori [Maori language immersion schools] across the Wellington district, which enhanced his knowledge of Te Ao Maori, the Maori worldview.

For seven years after that, he worked as an iwi liaison co-ordinator in Wairarapa, followed by six years in Hawke’s Bay. In 2014, Rutene had been pivotal in establishing one of the first Te Pae Oranga Iwi Community panels while based in

Gisborne. The panels served as a way for police and iwi to work together to prevent offenders from reoffending.

A 2019 evaluation of Te Pae Oranga indicated the success of these panels, showing they reduced harm from reoffending by 22 per cent.

For the past two years, Rutene had served as practice leader for Maori responsiveness at the Royal New Zealand Police College [RNZPC].

At the powhiri, he said the RNZPC had been a good place to pick up a

promotion. He would now wear three stars on his epaulette in recognition of his new title.

Despite the recognition, Rutene would continue in the theme of his career in his new role as MRM: working together with Maori communities.

The role would also involve working alongside Pacific and ethnic communities.

The Wellington district which Rutene would cover included 22 police stations, about 900 staff, and an area extending from Wellington City almost up

to Eketahuna and including the Chatham Islands.

He would take up a guardianship role for the district, working with a long-term goal in mind.

“Guardianship is really about ensuring that we do good things, not just for us but for future generations – those who are coming behind us,” Rutene said.

Such guardianship involved the movement within police to include more of the values of tikanga Maori [values and customs].

The role had a focus on preparing for the future and any unexpected events it might hold.

“Covid is a good example – preparing for another outbreak, perhaps, or another pandemic.

Or a disaster like an earthquake.”

Many of Rutene’s friends and colleagues spoke at the powhiri, with Rangitane o Wairarapa cultural adviser Mike Kawana leading proceedings.

Rutene’s friend Mohi Apou lightened the mood by drawing attention to the fact that four of the speakers came from the same school: Hato Paora.

Wellington District Commander Corrie Parnell welcomed Rutene to his team, saying he already enacted positive change within the role.

It’s so great to see two things that have been seen to be poles apart, reading and social media, can in fact be mutually beneficial. Books are wonderful, and tik tok can be too.

A key strategy is to be prepared to seek independent advice from experts, those with a proven record in the field or area upon which key decisions are based. to share positive messages with other people; the other is to ensure I’m always looking for positive messages myself.

Take today, for example; it has been a very challenging and frustrating one. However, I will finish the day looking for a story of

positivity. Despite the challenges I have faced, I know that there are so many incredible things that are just a read away that will bookend my day with a feeling of empowerment.

Regardless of what has happened earlier, we can choose to respond in a

constructive way. The choice is ours.

Tik tok loves books!

We so often read and hear about how social media is destroying the ability of children to enjoy and love books. However, this doesn’t have to be the case, as tik tok can be used as a means of promoting

the love of books and reading for pleasure.

I have just seen a wonderful story on the evening news about how tik tok is being used by a group of young readers to promote, review and share about the books they have read. What an awesome thing to do. Already there

I’m reading Tim Hartford’s book How to Make the World Add Up. The book is all about the power of statistics and how they can be used and interpreted to influence us in many of the decisions that impact on our daily lives.

Take, for example, figures on a political poll.

It would be easy to feel that an early poll would represent how things will often eventuate, giving the impression that a candidate is out of the race early on, even when there are a large number of undecided voters who could swing things considerably.

It’s so important to consider ‘facts’ as they are presented to you. Are they presented in a way that is deliberately done to influence a decision you are about to make, or are they a true reflection on reality?

Always look to take a bird’s eye rather than a worm’s eye view

When you break the chain

Jerry Seinfeld once told an aspiring comedian that the best way to become a better comedian was to write a joke every day and not break the chain.

To keep a record Seinfeld suggested marking an X on a calendar for every day a joke was written, with this eventually becoming a chain of Xs. This is great advice, as I believe that nothing is more effective as a means of achieving anything that consistently applying a new skill or habit.

However, what should you do if, for whatever reason, the chain is broken?

My view is to simply start again. Too often when we slip up, the slip up then proves to be the beginning of the downward slide, taking us back to where we were [or worse] before the habit started in the first place.

I broke my own chain today that I have had in place for over a year, doing so by purchasing an item [aside from books, food and drinks] from a store outside the province I live in. However, rather than letting go of the habit that has been in place now for over a year, I will instead start a new chain from tomorrow and will aim to go for even longer than the last one.

I have just started reading The Great Thinkers, a compilation of ideas from many of the greatest thinkers in the history of humanity. I’m looking forward to learning about the ideas of those whose names we so often hear, but, to be honest, we have no real understanding of what they said or did to make them still remembered and referred to so often hundreds or thousands of years later.

While reading the introduction I came across words that I could read in terms of pronouncing them, but I didn’t know the meaning of. Usually I would just carry on, but this time I looked them up in a dictionary when the meaning didn’t come to me through the sentence of the paragraph they appeared in. Although it took me a little longer to read the section, it gave me far greater clarity and has also increased both my knowledge and vocabulary: I’ll now be able to use reverence, sanguine, and canon in my own written and oral speech, as well as knowing what others are talking about when they use the same words.

How to be successful Radio New Zealand featured a story on how to be successful with resolutions over the course of a year, or with

more than one goal over any period of time.

The reason why many do slip up then give up is because too many goals are set and all are attempted at the same time. A much better approach is to do the easier one first and don’t even think about the others until the first one has been achieved. Once this is done, then work on the next easiest. What this approach does is it builds momentum based on the successes you have.

I once heard of the same approach being used to pay off debt. Rather than looking at total debt, instead focus first on the smallest one and pay that off, then the next smallest, and so on. Once again the momentum of success will increase motivation to work on the increasingly bigger goals, knocking one off at a time.

Like so many things the approach here is based on taking small and manageable steps to reach the destination you are striving for.

Technology is the way of the future I like to read the Richard Prebble opinion pieces in the Times-Age to find out how much he’s going to annoy me.

A Facebook meme showed a daughter telling her father she had decided to major in philosophy and him replying how fortunate that was since a huge philosophy factory was being built in their town.

Some junk mail had pages of ads for 3D printers, Arduino and Raspberry Pi kits – these are comparatively low-cost entry tools into digital technology that can be applied to real-world problems.

YouTube is awash with “How to” videos for all sorts of projects using these devices.

The future [and present] is digital. For over a decade it has been cheaper to produce a transistor than a grain of rice. A lower energy future that conserves water and other precious resources will best be controlled by smart

How do we build a community that is tech savvy enough to do that?

A current issue is that despite apparent easy access to the burgeoning of digital technology and its accessibility for learning and experimentation, a report [cutt.ly/ITDrop] shows a decline in participation in digital technology in secondary and tertiary education.

Technology done right has huge potential in a worldwide market.

Despite my usual aversion to things Prebble I had to agree with him that ensuring primary school children have a strong grounding

It has been heartening to read that Douglas Park School has taken up a project with the Teacher-led Innovation Fund [TLIF] that not only adopts new technology and maker culture but allows the kids to own and manage their own learning [cutt. ly/DPark - an inspiring read].

The now, apparently moribund, Wairarapa Economic Development Strategy [growwairarapa.nz] identified “School Technology Curriculum” as part of the People, Knowledge and Skills sector.

With Douglas Park School having shown the way, what is the possibility that this could be replicated throughout all Wairarapa primary schools?

Back when the WaiConnect working group was looking at how to maximise the benefits of broadband rollout in Wairarapa, one of the conversations was about how to enable our community to be content creators and users not simply be passive sponges for Netflix, YouTube etc.

Kevin Ball George Fink is a happy man. Most days you’ll find him in a corner of the Masterton Henley Men’s Shed, grinding a surgical edge to a vast collection of blades and chisels the men use on a daily basis.

Or maybe he’ll be stirring a pot of the saveloys he occasionally shouts for smoko. Or swapping insults with a group of new friends.

And talking: There’s some who’ll say George could talk for New Zealand, not surprising in a man who has been on this planet for nearly 85 years — he was born on Labour Day, 1936 – and who has lived a busy and fulfilling life.

George’s world collapsed when Jennifer, his wife of 64 years and mother of their two sons, died in March 2020. The couple had moved to Masterton from Upper Hutt five years before, when Jennifer required palliative care, and lived with their adopted daughter.

began when George undertook a 10,000-hour (five years) apprenticeship in 1953, working mainly on state houses plus some commercial buildings.

From 1960-1963 he built his own four-bedroom house.

He worked first with other builders and then with his father and brother-in-law, before becoming a grocer, taking over the Trentham 4-Square shop, Jennifer had a heart attack in 1976 so George sold up and

went back to building, taking on small jobs and becoming a Ministry of Works building overseer.

From there he became a police property officer and then a jailer for 28 years, off and on.

“I was responsible for up to 15 prisoners. It was a sworn position, although I had no powers outside the station,” he said.

George also sold houses for a while, “until Muldoon stuffed the country up”.

George joined the Men’s Shed “because it seemed

like a good idea”. He got more than he expected.

“The guys helped me to grieve. I’m still grieving.

But I’ve learned you’ve got to talk about it”.

George says he loves Masterton, where the people are friendly, not like Upper Hutt. “And the climate is better.” Jennifer thought Masterton was fabulous, he says.

“I’m as happy as Larry, doing my chisels and talking,” says George.

by XploratioNZ – Masterton.

She will be presenting two talks: • 2pm Silent Women – Leadership in the Churches of Paul • 4pm Mary Magdalene: Memory and Mystery.

Taylor, born in Lower Hutt, after a BA degree at Auckland University, completed post-graduate studies at the University of Otago, majoring in New Testament, and then went to the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem [Kenyon Institute] as Annual Scholar in 1986.

Taylor is now the Professor of Christian Origins and Second Temple Judaism at King’s College, London, and is presently the Visiting Research Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington.

Pizza boss backs health centre Since it opened over six months ago First Health & Wellness Centre has been embraced by the community with over 240 people walking through the doors of this nurse-led health service, but with no funding provided by the District Health Board or Primary Health Organisation this vital community service must still rely on donations to help cover costs.

It took Trish Wilkinson three years to get the doors of the Wellness Centre open.

Initially opening from 5-9pm the centre quickly extended those hours to noon8pm due to demand.

“Our area was suffering from a doctor shortage and many people were relying on our local emergency department for their health needs. I knew that our community needed something innovative to help take the pressure off those services while still providing a high standard of health care,” says clinical services director Trish Wilkinson.

“Although we receive funds through patient fees we do not receive any funding from the area PHO or DHB so we still rely heavily on community donations. Without them we would struggle to pay for the operational infrastructure that we need.”

When Domino’s Masterton store owner Amandeep Singh heard that First Health & Wellness Centre needed to raise money he didn’t hesitate to help.

He has set out to raise a whopping $10,000 for the centre over 26 weeks through the Domino’s Doughraiser programme, money which will pay for the vital management software that helps the centre to operate.

“When I found out that the centre needed to raise money I thought we could run a Doughraiser for just one night which is what we would normally do.

“The more I thought about it, the more I realised that I wanted to raise as much

money as I could so that I could really make a difference for this organisation and for the community.

“That’s when I decided to run the doughraiser, not for one night but to run it every Thursday for six months,” said Singh.

“My target is to be able to give First Health & Wellness Centre $10,000 and we’re well on our way having already raised $2333 over the past nine weeks and we’ve still got another 17 weeks to go.”

A young Horace Falloon.

Horace Falloon Horace Falloon was born in 1900, the son of John “Jack” Falloon and his wife Sarah Ann ‘Alice’ Rayner.

His father was one of a family of Irish immigrants to Wairarapa, his mother part of a large Carterton family. His father’s brother married his mother’s cousin.

Jack Falloon died in 1908, and his mother shifted her small family to Pahiatua.

Horace is mentioned in the newspaper of the time as a young performer, giving a recitation at one concert, and singing at another.

He was also very unlucky, particularly when it came to horses.

He injured himself quite badly in two separate incidents involving ponies when he was a young teenager.

He was educated at the Pahiatua District High School and Wellington College, before studying at Victoria University.

In 1922, he left New Zealand, bound for the United States, where he wanted to pursue an acting career.

He obviously decided that “Horace Falloon” did not have the right ring for a movie star and changed his name to Jack Glendower.

The change was so

complete that his mother, who moved to America with him, became known as Mrs Glendower.

Naturalised under the Falloon name in the 1930s, he officially changed his name to Glendower in 1951.

As Jack Glendower, he appeared in several films with notable stars, especially Doris Keane and the renowned vaudeville performer and female impersonator Julian Effinge.

He was also reported to be a “scenario writer”.

He later moved his attention back to the stage and worked with Doris Keane once again, this time as her son in ‘The Czarina’.

He was also working as a nurse and chauffeur to a wealthy art critic for whom his mother was a housekeeper.

In 1929, he and his mother were left $4000 cash and about $150,000 in Californian property when his employee died.

The gift was disputed in court by other beneficiaries, but the courts found in favour of the Glendowers.

Later that year, he was reported to be acting in a single reel talkie being produced as part of a series.

hometown in 1930, he spoke of some of the stars he knew.

He said Al Jonson, the highest salaried talkie artist was the greatest drawing card, and Maurice Chevalier was a man with

more personality than any other he had ever met.

Among the female actors, Bessie Love and Betty Compson have made the most sensational leap to fame, and Bebe Daniels as a talkie artist was “a

greater rage than ever”.

By this time, the Ballance boy was becoming well known in Hollywood, described as an “ambitious producer”, and gaining a reputation as an impresario.

In 1933, still living with his mother, his house in Highland Avenue was described as the most popular.

A Californian Jewish newspaper reported: “Here colourful Bohemia from

all ends of the earth finds itself chatting on friendly terms. It is a Bohemia presided over by Jack’s delightful mother who smilingly dispenses tea and cakes to all comers – and here the Bohemia pattern alters – Bohemia never tasted cakes like these!”.

“Mr Glendower, who is Hollywood’s youngest impresario is to present the first of his concert series at the Hollywood Concert Hall.”

In late 1935, Jack Glendower, described in the newspapers as a “socialite”, married Gladys Grinstead, previously Safford.

She was 11 years older than him, and although she already had a daughter to her first husband, the screenwriter Durward Grinstead, they were to have no children.

His stepdaughter, Ann Grinstead, was also a juvenile performer, and later an opera singer.

The following year, Alice Falloon, now calling herself Glendower, revisited Pahiatua.

Among other topics, she told the reporter she knew

“Yes, she replied, I live only a few doors from Shirley’s home. She is a very pretty little girl and is not in any way spoilt. She is a grand little artist, but she does not yet understand the significance of the pictures she takes part in, but thinks she is only playing a game.”

She also talked of her son’s friendship with the silent movie star Mary Pickford, saying she frequently appears at his concerts and socials.

By 1942, the Glendowers had moved north to San Mateo, in the San Francisco Bay area, where Jack registered for World War II purposes.

He described himself as being self-employed.

His acting days seemed to be behind him, but he was following another line of business. Somewhat surprisingly, considering his accidents back in Pahiatua, he became heavily involved in the horse racing industry, both as an owner and as a prominent administrator.

He acted as the racing manager for the California State Fair for several years.

Jack Glendower suffered a bad stroke in 1962 and died in 1974. He and Gladys are buried in Los Angeles.

He said South Wairarapa and Carterton councils had a setup where residents paid for water within rates, but they’d pay more if they were high users or exceeded a set cap.

“This council has an option of adopting that method, or another, that’s a discussion still to be had,” Hopman said.

Mayor Lyn Patterson said council should start encouraging people to check their water meters now.

She hoped people would check their meter once a month and see what their usage was.

She wanted council staff to approximate

how much water certain households should be using for residents to gauge where they sat with consumption.

Hopman said that meter installation would encourage a behavioural change in Masterton residents.

“You have to think about the water for your gardening; you think about leaving the tap on when you’re brushing your teeth.”

Hopman reminded council that they didn’t profit from water.

“We will be recouping the costs of delivering the service. That includes pipework renewals. That’s all funded from our

water rates.”

A council spokesperson said households with water meters could check them now – simply by lifting the lid on the meter.

“If all taps are turned off, and nothing like washing machines/ dishwashers are running, no water is being intentionally used, the numbers on the meter shouldn’t move. If they do, it may indicate a leak that needs investigation.”

The spokesperson said there would not be any charging using meters until the 2022-23 financial year.

Grace Prior Masterton’s water meter rollout is nine months behind schedule, and council staff have discovered water leaks at up to 15 per cent of households where meters had been installed.

Masterton District Council discussed its behind-schedule rollout of water meters at Wednesday’s infrastructure and services meeting.

Assets and services manager David Hopman said the council had run into some resourcing issues, pushing the project back.

“Eighty per cent are in, but 80 per cent isn’t 100 per cent,” he said.

The water meter install was planned to be finished

by October 2020.

Hopman said the council would be undertaking a rates review later this year, and water meter charges would be part of that discussion.

A council spokesperson said just over 75 per cent of urban residential properties have had water meters installed, totalling 6769 properties.

Hopman said from the meters that had been put in, council found that up to 15 per cent of households had leaks on

Secret recipe to success Since its founding, Masterton always made do with small-time food outlets. In 1983 that all changed.

In October 1982 came the news that many had been looking forward to.

American fast food giant Kentucky Fried Chicken was to set up in Masterton.

Then began the long process of securing a site and getting the build underway.

The site chosen was on the corner of Crayne and Chapel streets, which then had a fashion store and the Ministry of Transport vehicle testing station.

An agreement was made with the Masterton Trust Lands Trust to build the new restaurant.

It was said that the new restaurant would seat 52 patrons, have parking for 21 cars and would create six fulltime and 15 part-time jobs for a region that was struggling with unemployment.

It was not a decision that was met with universal approval.

There were six objections raised at the Masterton Borough Council town planning

committee meeting held in June.

The council upheld the decision to allow the build to go ahead.

Masterton firm Dixon and McKinlay Limited landed the $302,000 tender to construct the new eatery and work began on February 21.

It would be owned by the Masterton Trust Lands Trust and was to be leased to Kentucky Fried Chicken for a 20-year period.

The concrete foundations were poured in the second week of March and the build progressed according to schedule.

In May, the fast food franchise began to advertise for the jobs they needed to fill when the restaurant opened.

A five-piece pack was $4.50 and a 15-piece family box was $12.20.

For those a bit hungrier, a 25-piece bumper box was $16.35 and for the truly starving a 50-piece party hamper was $47.50.

The sides included

chips, starting at 75 cents, bread rolls, which were 32 cents, a reminder of when we still had one and two cent coins, potato and gravy was 50 cents, and for dessert a cheese cake for 65 cents.

For those who were more healthily inclined,

coleslaw and bean salads were 50 cents each, and something that was once common on the menu, corn, was 80 cents.

The restaurant prospered and was

the only large American fast food giant for nearly nine years until the golden arches set up in town in 1992.

For nearly four decades, people have been able to get their fix of fried chicken and chips from the same location.

The numbers of its customers have remained strong, proving their hunger for Colonel Sanders’ 11 herbs and spices recipe remains finger lickin’ good.

they added “people afraid of hard work need not apply”.

It did not deter people wanting a job. More than 200 people turned up for an interview.

There were 30 jobs up for grabs, just five being fulltime.

Official numbers at the time showed there were 1105 unemployed persons in Wairarapa, the highest number since statistics were first taken in 1977.

The big day came on Tuesday June 28, 1983.

Masterton’s Kentucky Fried Chicken was officially open for business.

And business was good.

The paper ran a captioned photograph that stated that the new restaurant “opened quietly in Masterton with no fanfare of trumpets, but steady demand for its products”.

The products that were on offer were a little bit different to what we have today. The prices certainly were.

Tora’s forgotten shipwreck Yann Kohout An old shipwreck has skipped the history books and is rotting away in the sea breeze off Te Kaukau Point.

The wreck of the Magnet, a fishing boat from Wellington which went aground 32 years ago, is a 30-minute

WAIRARAPA SHIPWRECK walk from White Rock Station and a three-hour walk from Tora Bay. Its hull is mostly remained intact, rusting among a colony of seals, but the wreck is little known outside Tora.

The Magnet set sail from Wellington on the morning of March 7,

1989, with the intention of fishing off the South Wairarapa coast. The crew included a master and a crew member.

The boat spent the day fishing about 6km to the south of Te Kaukau Point.

The weather was expected to change the next day, but a bad southerly came through much sooner and as the crew slept. Throughout the night, the boat drifted toward land until the crew were awoken by a large crash at 3am as the boat struck a rock off Te Kaukau Point.

The crew, a farmer and a marine surveyor appointed by the company, tried to salvage as much from the boat as possible

but it was declared a write-off.

The skipper of the Magnet did not want to be named to the press and the crew was never known.

Tora farmer David Tyler said the boat was pulled out with bulldozers.

Masterton archivist shipwrecks expert Mark Pacey said he was

not surprised the wreck had remained relatively unknown.

“Quite often, historians tend to miss recent shipwrecks and focus on the older ones.

“There could be many other shipwrecks still undiscovered or labelled.”

Pacey is tracking down as many shipwrecks as he can and is writing a book on Wairarapa shipwrecks.

It acknowledges and celebrates the swathe of volunteers in our community who generously give of their �me to help others and keep a mul�tude of organisa�ons afloat. This year’s theme is ‘Recognise, Connect, Reimagine’.

Na�onal Volunteer Week Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu honours the collec�ve energies and mana of all volunteers in Aotearoa New Zealand. More than one million people across the country volunteer for an organisa�on, contribu�ng $4 billion to the economy.

The landscape of volunteering is changing, reflec�ng changes in society.

Change presents different challenges across the sector, but also highlights unique opportuni�es for reshaping and improving the prac�ce of volunteering.

Volunteering New Zealand, as the support organisa�on, con�nues to develop its exper�se in ac�ng as the champion of

mahi aroha.

Volunteering Wairarapa was founded in 2014, as a part of the Wairarapa Community Centre Trust. In 2017, it became an independent organisa�on, and is now a registered charity. It was the 19th Volunteer Centre established throughout New Zealand and is a member of the Volunteer Centre Network Aotearoa and Volunteering New Zealand.

It supports volunteers and volunteerinvolving groups throughout Wairarapa.

Aiming to make volunteering easy, it is a central go-to point where volunteers can connect with mul�ple groups and see the diverse range of opportuni�es available.

Co-ordinator, Donna Robinson, came to the organisa�on as a volunteer and fell in love with the strong support network.

She grabbed at the chance to take on the co-ordinator’s role and reports to a nine-member board – yes, you guessed it, made up of volunteers! The office is based in the Community Centre, 41 Perry Street, Masterton.

Hospice Wairarapa Community Trust Volunteers fulfil many important roles in organisa�ons throughout Wairarapa. Hospice Wairarapa is no excep�on and is supported by over 150 volunteers carrying out a myriad of tasks and services.

Hospice Wairarapa Community Trust supports people and their whanau with any kind of terminal illness during the last stages of life. Tracey Harris is the Volunteer and Fundraising Manager and is based at Te Kowhai House in Renall Street, Masterton. The expansive and welcoming 1930s villa offers space for pa�ent programmes, wellness therapy and counselling, and in the future the plan is to provide pallia�ve beds. Tracey is keen to point out that Hospice is not just a building, it is a holis�c philosophy of care, and the focus is not on death and dying,

Providing vital revenue to support the free services Hospice offers are their shops in Masterton and Greytown and the Saturday Garage Sale at Te Kowhai (9am-11am). Sue Cochrane, Retail Manager, leads a small paid staff and a team of invaluable volunteers who cover a variety of retail roles including sor�ng donated goods, customer services and delivery/pick up service.

Thanking Carterton’s dedicated volunteers for their contribution Carterton District Council is really thankful for the amazing volunteers it has, tirelessly giving their time for the benefit of the Carterton community. We have so many great volunteer organisations.

For example, we have the Carterton Foodbank, which delivers parcels yearround to those in need. Just recently, the Foodbank’s chair and co-ordinator Yvonne retired after more than five years of outstanding service to the community. This has been recognised with her being named a finalist for the Charles Rooking Carter Civic Award.

We are also fortunate to now have John Vallely step into the role of co-ordinator and we are very grateful for the work he and his team continue to do. Working alongside Foodbank is the fantastic group of volunteers for Waiwaste, who collect food that is good enough to eat but not good enough to sell and redistribute to community organisations for use.

Seen some newly-painted fitness equipment at Carrington Park? Or maybe you noticed the autumn leaves are removed each year at the Clareville Cemetery? What about the words ‘Carterton’ on the south end entrance grass bank that gets repainted all the time? That’s thanks to the Keep Carterton Beautiful Group, who give up their free

time to do many jobs that the Council cannot fit in, or don’t have the budget for.

And let’s not forget our Carterton Volunteer firefighters who put their lives on the line every day to protect our community.

We know there are many other organisations and individuals who generously give up their time and resources. There are sure to be many we don’t know about too! We are grateful to each and every one of you for your support and commitment to our community.

Benefits of Volunteering for your mental well-being Being a volunteer has lots of benefits both to you, your community, and the organisation you give your time to.

It can bring meaning and purpose to your life, while increasing your self-esteem and well-being. As well as helping your community, volunteering can improve your own inter-personal relationships. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person.

Some of the attributes to keep in mind when you decide to volunteer are to have patience when dealing with others, be eager to take on new tasks, stay humble, show enthusiasm, think creatively and be able to work in a team.

So, when you decide you’d like to volunteer for someone or somewhere, look within yourself and decide what you feel strongly about, check out what organisations work in that area, approach them, and ask if they need help. More often than not, it will be a resounding YES, and the rest is up to you.

Hospital volunteer?

Several roles are available at the hospital. Meet and greet, give direc�ons, visit the wards, and provide a friendly face. It can make all the difference to a person’s healing and recupera�on.

Knit and natter?

There are kni�ng groups who meet regularly and knit while they chat. Products created are donated to many organisa�ons and people in need.

Meals on Wheels driver?

This service provides meals to the ill, elderly and disabled in their homes. Volunteers deliver the meals and have a chat with the person. Volunteers need their own vehicle and be available around meal�mes.

Refugee Support?

Tasks may include helping new refugees set up home, helping them enrol children at schools, budge�ng help and advice on shopping. Showing how to use public transport and generally explaining how things operate in New Zealand and your community.

Event Volunteer?

Becoming a Red Cross event volunteer is a great way to meet new people and get event experience.

Assis�ng Red Cross staff at all sorts of events with things like handing out flyers and give-aways, se�ng up stalls, venue decora�on, taking photos, organising refreshments, holding buckets, and cha�ng to event par�cipants. Great fun!

Kandahar Home’s Enliven volunteers get back more than they give Even an hour a week can make a difference in an older person’s life.

Volunteers at Kandahar Home interact with residents doing cra�s, playing games, serving morning and a�ernoon teas, gardening and music. Some volunteers bring pets for a visit, which always gets smiles.

But Kandahar Home manager Peter Newman says one-on-one �me with residents can be the most valuable.

“Whether it’s reading the paper to residents or simply talking and engaging with them it really brightens up their day. It would be awesome to get more volunteers like that on board,” he says.

Largest volunteer group in NZ

Conservation volunteering

When their pager alarm sounds, fire and emergency volunteers are the ones who leap out of bed, drop whatever they are doing at work, or rush from a family meal to protect you and/or property in times of emergency.

It seeks long and short-term volunteers who want to get involved with some of New Zealand’s rarest wildlife with these activities: It’s also a chance to learn more about the conservation of wildlife.

In the Wairarapa/Tararua regions there are around 500 men and women, out of 25 brigades from Ngawi to Norsewood, who give their time willingly to help others. Phill Wishnowsky is the Principal Rural Fire Officer for the region and says Fire and Emergency New Zealand would not operate without these generous souls. Phill values getting thank you messages from grateful people who have been helped by the volunteers.

Travel to another time A coastal venture has weathered the storms of a covid-hit tourism sector better than most, SHEA TURNER writes.

At the end of Ica Rd, as you drive through a tunnel of trees to Ica Homestead, you could be forgiven for thinking you had arrived at 1866.

The front of the homestead will leave you in awe as you stand face to face with a sprawling lawn lined by immaculately kept gardens and brick steps that carry you up to the historic house.

Showing little signs of wear, it is hard not to get the feeling of being a lot further than 40 minutes from the Masterton town centre.

The Ica homestead and station were originally owned by John Chapman Andrew, a Church of England priest, one time Oxford Don, educationist, pastoralist and Member of Parliament for Wairarapa.

It was rebuilt in 1901

to the same design after the original, built in 1866, burnt down in 1895.

The term Ica comes from Chapman’s initials; as a lecturer in ancient Greek, he changed the first letter of his initials to refer to Ioannis, the Greek name for John.

The station has long been split up and the homestead 20-acre block was split off seven years ago when Carmen and Dick Tredwell bought it.

The former farmers started the Whareama Coastal Walk 10 years ago, when they were just around the corner from Ica station at their own little farm.

The idea came from the Tora Coastal Walk, another walk and accommodation operation nearby.

saw their chance to move to a more convenient location and expand their venture.

Dick Tredwell said it was the perfect opportunity because they wanted to get out of farming.

The owners of the homestead were happy to remove the homestead from the remaining land they had.

The Whareama Coastal

KA NUI TE MIHI!

Walk runs on a seasonal basis from October to April and offers a one-day walk or two-day and two-night walk package.

The two-day two-night package comprises of a stay overnight at the homestead before heading off on a 14km walk the next day to the Wai Ngaio retreat, where they stay overnight before heading back on a 10km walk the next day.

Don’t be alarmed by the length of the walk – the homestead boasts a pool and spa facility to ease any achy legs.

The walk goes over four different farms and has evolved since it first started.

It showcases and gives access to some of the most beautiful Wairarapa coastline views on wellmarked farm tracks.

The package is a fullycatered walk, including all breakfast, lunch, and dinners, accommodation, and transportation of gear.

The Tredwells say the walk is a bit of a bucket list adventure for many, and often they come to tick it off along with some of the other walks in Wairarapa.

Carmen says their slogan fits in with what Kiwis are looking for; something “off

the beaten track”.

Whareama Coastal Walk can cater for a group as small as two to a group as large as 16.

Carmen says it is largely used for friends or work colleagues to catch up for weekends away.

They serve mostly domestic-based clients, so have not seen the covideffect other tourism areas have.

They experienced one of their busiest seasons during the 2020-21 peak season and had to turn people away because they were fully booked.

During the offseason, the homestead and cottages are still available as a bed and breakfast or rental, but the walks are not accessible during the farming season.

Farmers surveyed on banking satisfaction

Concern about branch closures can be added to the continued slide in farmers’ satisfaction with their banks, the latest Federated Farmers Banking Survey shows.

More than 1100 farmers responded to the May survey and 71 per cent of them said they were concerned about bank branch closures. Of those who were concerned, 42 per cent said they needed branches to carry out their business and 56 per cent were worried about the impact of closures on their local communities.

“Provincial towns are under all sorts of pressures, with workforce gaps, farms jobs disappearing as productive land is planted out in pines for carbon credits, competition from online sales trends that all traditional retailers face, to name some of the factors,” Federated Farmers president and commerce spokesman Andrew Hoggard said.

“Bank branch closures are just another hit on confidence, making doing business in rural areas that much harder, and another reason for young people to look to cities for their future when agriculture is

the main way New Zealand earns its living in the world.”

The six-monthly survey, run with the help of Research First, found 62 per cent of farmers are satisfied with their bank relationship, down four points on November and a continuation of steady erosion in satisfaction over the past five years, when it was over 80 per cent. Meat and wool and arable farms are the most satisfied, ‘other industry groups’ least satisfied.

“Just on 18 per cent of farmers said they’d been feeling under pressure from their banks – down half a point on six months ago, so that’s stable.

Arable farmers are feeling the most pressure, when in earlier surveys of late it has been dairy farmers,” Hoggard said.

Some 58 per cent of farmers said communication with their bank has been good or very good, down four

points on November. As with overall relationship satisfaction, that sentiment has been eroding steadily over recent years.

The May survey also threw in a question about banks phasing out cheques. Five per cent of respondents said they use cheques and don’t have easy access to alternatives; “I would suspect a reflection of poor internet connectivity in their locality,” Hoggard said.

Another 61 per cent said they don’t use cheques but are concerned about people who don’t have easy alternatives; 34 per cent are ‘not concerned’.
