Eugene John DeMarco, 57, appeared in the High Court at Wellington last week for sentencing on six counts of fraud, which he committed while working for a company owned by Sir Peter and his wife, Dame Fran Walsh.

DeMarco was convicted of fraud after selling off some of vintage planes. He was sentenced to jail for two years and five months.

“There’s a full spectrum of living styles.

“In Buka, the capital, you can stay in a 3.5-star hotel and sit in an airconditioned cafe, then it stems all the way down the island to the south where the majority of the people live in remote, very basic villages with minimal healthcare, difficult access to education, and isolation from communications.

“In Buin where I was there was no newspaper, no radio, no television, but there was intermittent internet.”

Bron said many of the people she mingled with didn’t have much more than what they stood in.

“Most huts were grass, they may have owned a cooking pot, they would have had a fire and they fished.

“They did their washing in the river.”

She saw many hungry children and said while hearing of rapes and murders was not uncommon, Bron felt safe all the time.

She said the residents of Bougainville were still recovering from their violent past. Tensions over the Panguna mine led to the Bougainville Civil War in the 1980s and 1990s that left up to an estimated 20,000 Bougainvilleans dead.

“People still talk about it, there’s lots of PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) and depression, lots of uneducated adults because they couldn’t go to school during those years, so it’s full of challenges.”

Celia had been the first woman to be promoted into the top position at the Buin Medical Centre.

“The level of social resistance of her appointment was high, to the point that she was side-lined two weeks before I arrived.”

Bron said she treaded water gently so as not to “alienate and offend” anyone, and within a month she had helped Celia reclaim her position at the top.

“Women were certainly at the bottom of the pile,” she said.

“But they are trying to address that because they are realising that, to have a functional society, there has to be an equal holding of power, but it might take a generation to make the change.”

“Anyone who comes into the Buin Health Centre who is seriously unwell or who we have got concerns for, they are referred out to the next town, Arawa, which is three hours north.

“Sometimes they make it, and sometimes they don’t.”

She said in most places, vaccination levels were low; diseases almost now forgotten in New Zealand were common or making a comeback in PNG. Two years ago, there was an outbreak of polio, and there are high levels of tuberculosis (TB) – “but not just TB,

drug-resistant TB”.

She said this was down to people not finishing their course of antibiotics, instead sharing the dose with family members, or there being no drugs available for a second course of treatment.

Bron said earthquakes were frequent, and she was dealing with heats of “32C-38C with 90-100 per cent humidity”.

“I got sunburnt through my umbrella and through all my clothes, that’s how hot it was.”

She said there were “crystal-clear water white beaches” with amazing snorkelling opportunities, but also crocodile infested waters.

Bron witnessed one woman’s “extensive” wounds after being attacked by a croc.

The woman had held on to a mangrove while her friends beat the crocodile off with a stick.

“About two weeks after that, a 16-year-old boy got taken.”

During her stint away, it was her grandchildren and her garden that Bron missed most. When she left PNG, it had rained continually for three months, and as a result, many of the garden crops had failed.

Bron said the experience was like being in another world and gave perspective to her life in New Zealand.

“I was acutely aware of what a privileged life we live here.”

VSA paid for Bron’s flights, vaccinations, and accommodation in PNG. The organisation also gave her a weekly allowance equivalent of PNG’s average wage.

DHB invites community to make a patient’s day Because no one chooses to be in hospital during the festive season, the Wairarapa District Health Board (DHB) is inviting donations of presents to go under the Patient Tree at Wairarapa Hospital.

These gifts will be wrapped by staff for distribution on Christmas Day to those who can’t be at home celebrating with their families.

to wrap the gifts, after staff take note of each present to make sure the best patient match can be made. The DHB says even the smallest gift can bring a smile to someone in hospital. People can

drop off a patient gift, with an optional kind note, to Wairarapa Hospital’s main reception from 8am to 7pm up until Friday, December 20. The DHB requests that donated gifts are brought in unwrapped.

People intending to visit the hospital to deliver other Christmas goodies are asked that they do so before midday on Christmas Eve, as staff numbers will be limited on Christmas Day.

Town hall ‘must haves’

Karen Coltman Masterton District Council (MDC) wants to be sure that current and future ratepayers have a say on spending when it comes to the Masterton Town Hall.

The town hall survey to find out the ballpark amount that ratepayers would be prepared to pay to earthquake strengthening the whole building, fix parts of it, or to demolish it and replace it, went live on the weekend. To demolish it will cost about $2 million and to build a new civic centre will cost from $15.5m to $16.5m. To retain the 1950s façade and build a facility connected to it will cost from $15m to $16m. Mayor Lyn Patterson said the closure of the town hall was significant for the community and it has been “a long process trying to decide on next steps”.

“On one hand many think a shared community facility like a town hall or civic centre is the heart of a community. On the other, we need to consider the financial impact this investment would have on our community.”

Patterson said information gathered through engagement would help identify a preferred option, which would be consulted on early next year. From this week, the council will have a “Have your say hub” at the Queen St council office and will be at some summer community events, including school holiday programmes.

Communications manager Shanna Crispin said this was because what would be done would be paid for over generations. “It’s important we hear from our younger residents.”

Council engagement and the survey will continue until mid-February.

Kids polish up on school history Hayley Gastmeier The Catholic area of Archer St Cemetery in Masterton is spick-and-span thanks to the efforts of school children who, through their hard work, learned about respect and the history of their school.

Seventy-three pupils aged 7-9 from St Patrick’s School’s middle “McKenna” syndicate were on site with rakes, soapy water, and cloths last Thursday, polishing gravestones, pulling weeds, picking up rubbish, and tidying the grounds.

It was the school’s first working bee at the cemetery, which has a strong link to the school.

Teacher Kim Teahan told the pupils that the nuns and priests buried in the part of the cemetery that they would be tidying were responsible for opening St Patrick’s School in 1898.

The Brigidine Sisters from Ireland started and ran the Masterton school until 1986 when the last religious sister, Sister JeanMarie, retired from her position as principal.

“So, without them, we wouldn’t have the school that we have now,” Kim said.

“These graves belong to

some of those nuns … so this is part of our history.

“We want to make sure [this area] is looked after because, as you can see, many of these graves are very, very old.”

Kim said she had been wanting to launch the

project with school pupils for some time, and she hoped the working bees became a regular fixture on St Patrick’s School’s calendar.

She said she hoped the pupils would “feel a real sense of pride” for the

cemetery through the exercise.

Answering a pupil’s question, teacher Alyson Potter explained that the Catholic priests and nuns buried in the cemetery were married to God, and therefore did not have

family or descendants to keep their gravesites tidy.

“That’s why we’re coming to clean up, because they don’t have any children to do it for them.”

Alyson said the exercise would teach the pupils about being respectful

and would also help them understand that death was a natural part of life.

Deputy principal Chris Day said outdoor education was crucial and the work in the cemetery would push pupils outside their comfort zone while reconnecting them with their history.

Pupils piped up with ideas about how they could keep the area tidy – polish head stones, remove litter, bring fresh flowers, and touch up names with paint.

Former St Patrick’s School teacher, Brendan Connor turned up prepared with all the tools needed for the working bee.

He has been responsible for keeping the area tidy in recent years.

Prior to him, it was tidied

by Sister Monica Landy, who is the only Brigidine nun left in Masterton.

Brendan said Father John McKenna, who was appointed parish priest of Masterton in January 1887, was responsible for bringing the Brigidine Sisters to Wairarapa.

Prior to the working bee, New Zealand Remembrance Army Wairarapa coordinator Jack Hayes met with the teachers to share with them restoration techniques and on-site protocol.

Vyktah picked for netball world champs Chris Cogdale Vyktah Tamihana started playing netball when has was five years old.

Eight years later, the Wairarapa College student has been named in the national men’s Under-20 team to play at the 2020 world championships in Perth, Western Australia.

Vyktah’s selection has caused a bit of a stir and has attracted the attention of television.

Vyktah, the youngest player in the team, was interviewed for the TVNZ ‘Seven Sharp’ current affairs show, which aired last week.

Vyktah came to the attention of the national selectors through his solid performances for the Wellington Under-23 men’s team in the national league.

Vyktah said he was “pretty excited” about his selection.

“It was good, I had been playing well for Wellington in the national league and I’m now in the playing 12, so I’ll keep working hard.”

Vyktah is sure to play a prominent role in the team.

He normally plays in one of two of the most demanding positions.

“I can play centre or wing

attack, but I prefer to play wing attack.”

He said he wasn’t daunted about playing against older players, as he had done so throughout his playing career.

Locally, Vyktah played for the Wairarapa College junior A side that competed in this year’s Wairarapa premier two championship.

He took up the sport when he saw his parents, Jacqueline ‘Jax’ Ropiha and Himiona Tamihana, playing at the former indoor sports centre in Ngaumutawa Rd. “It was just that my parents were playing indoor netball and it

looked like fun, so I started playing.”

He quickly found success in his chosen sport, playing for St Patrick’s School and later earning representative selection.

In 2018, Vyktah was named Wairarapa’s most promising intermediate player.

Vyktah said he had no desire to play traditional boys’ sports such as rugby or football.

In 2020, Vyktah will compete in the local competition, as well as the national Under-23 men’s league in preparation for the Under-20 world championships in October.

Hayley Gastmeier Nominations for the 2020 Charles Rooking Carter Awards are now open.

The biennial awards night is Carterton’s chance to celebrate the outstanding volunteer work, business innovation, and achievements of members in the community.

The awards night will be an evening of community spirit held on May 23, 2020 at the Carterton Events Centre.

Helen Dew was the winner of last year’s top honour, the Civic Award.

She said the honour was a great surprise “because there was some pretty inspiring competition”, adding that she would “hate to have been a judge”.

Helen said it had been “a long journey” to get to where she was.

“But there’s still a long way to go in terms of my vision for Carterton.”

Her mission began in 1991 when she joined the Wairarapa Green Dollar Exchange and she is an advocate for other local currency systems such as

The awards are sponsored by Carterton Lions, Carterton New World, Gain Momentum, and More FM. The awards were created by the Carterton District Council in 1994 and are named after Charles Rooking Carter, who was a strong advocate for Wairarapa settlers.

He was instrumental in developing many public services in Carterton including the library, an astronomical observatory, cemetery, post office, courthouse, and police station.

His most notable gifts to the town were the Carter Home for aged men, now known as Carter Court, and the Carter Reserve, an area of native bushland.

To date, over 136 Charles Rooking Carter community awards have been given to people who generously provide time, passion and commitment to making Carterton a caring and thriving place to live.

The Council offices will be closed from midday on 24 December, reopening at 8.30am on Monday 6th January.

During this time, your rubbish and refuse collection service will run as usual, with collection on Monday 23rd and Monday 30th December, and Monday 6th January.

Kokotau means elegant flight. The Kokotau Reserve was an inspiration for the name of a festival, Kokomai, held recently.

The theme for the festival was flying and Paora Ammunsen, one of Wairarapa’s most beautiful whaikōrero or speakers, reflected on the kupu or word, koko which means to soar.

PACK THE BUS

Our council is really proud to have been a part of Pack the Bus this year, which sees the presents and food items donated by our community get distributed to those in need so the Christmas Season is a wonderful one for everybody in Wairarapa. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped support this fantastic initiative.

The native birds, especially the Kahu, or Hawk and the Kārearea, the falcon, have inspired people as they soared effortlessly. One person from Wairarapa, Nukupewapewa, invented hang gliding and the kōrero about this flying, like a Kahu, was that the soaring in flight was elegant or Kokotau.

Our summer reading programmes are back!

We have two summer reading programmes to keep the kids busy over the holidays - The Great Reading Carnival for ages 2-12, and IRead for ages 11+.

No doubt many of you would have seen our amazing new edition of the Carterton Residents Guide, which was put together with help from the production team at Wairarapa Times-Age. Unfortunately, we (at council) made a bit of an error with the new map which saw some of the street names left off. We apologise for the slip-up. Sending love to Samoa My heart goes out to the people of Samoa. It is truly a tragic situation.

Measles has killed dozens of people, most of them children under the age of four and many less than a year old. Many more are critically ill.

Resident Paulo Tuivale Puelua has lost three of his five children to the disease.

I imagine there would be very few people out there able to understand that man’s grief. It’s one heart-breaking story after another.

The outbreak, which began in October, led to a national shutdown last week to allow vaccination teams, including health workers sent from New Zealand, to reach people who had not been immunised. The Samoan Government’s goal was to have 90 per cent of the population vaccinated.

If you had asked for my opinion on vaccines three years ago, I would have said something along the lines of “I need to do some research”. I had heard the ‘anti-vax’ rhetoric and at the time, an uneducated me, thought their argument had just as much standing

Yes, I am embarrassed about that naive outlook now. No I wasn’t an ‘antivaxxer’ discouraging others from being immunised, but at the same time I would not have encouraged anyone to do it either – sitting on the fence you could say. In light of the Samoa situation however, one cannot deny that the 70 deaths (at time of print) were preventable.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Measles “remains an important cause of death among young children globally, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine”.

The Immunisation Advisory Centre says, “Two doses of the MMR vaccine is 99 per cent effective in preventing measles.”

It’s estimated that 86 per cent of children globally received the first dose of

measles vaccine, but fewer than 70 per cent received the second dose.

In Samoa, just 13 per cent of the population had both doses of the vaccine last year, according to WHO estimates.

Two babies died in Samoa last year after receiving incorrectly mixed vaccines. The deaths were down to human error – this may explain the low vaccination uptake figures.

Of course, it is up to each of us to decide what’s best for ourselves and our families. But if our decisions pose a significant threat to our communities and put lives at risk, then it’s time to review our stance.

Having visited Samoa in 2007, I have fond memories of a green and beautiful landscape occupied by relaxed, welcoming, and incredibly warm people. Kia kaha Samoa. Stay strong.

Art, colour, mana: Eagle’s legacy “Art is my breath and a lifelong interest,” said Jan Eagle (1936-2018), a prominent Wairarapa artist over several decades.

“Self-educated, I have absorbed 15 years of night school and tertiary education under Simon Payton, John Drawbridge, Rhondda Greig and Trevor Morris.

“These artists have provided me with a diverse and sound background from which to develop my own, very definitive ideas.

“To go on developing as an artist is accepting that challenge and frustrations are part of that growth.

“Artists strive to define humanity’s relationship with the world.

“We are creations of our culture; articulations of our place in time.

“As an artist, I can offer a unique perspective of the world through my artwork.

“Understanding of colour and tone for me is a major vehicle; from there comes the depth and vibrance of an exciting work.”

Aratoi recently held a retrospective exhibition of 60 of Jan Eagle’s paintings to celebrate her life, her art, her mana.

After the exhibition, the Eagle family gifted the museum four paintings, including this self-portrait, titled No to Botox.

The family has now kindly sponsored the Jan Eagle Memorial Award in the 2019 Wairarapa Art Review, which opens to the public on Friday.

respected and talented Wairarapa artist with huge mana, who sadly passed away last year,” said Gwenda Saunders, who

Both books concentrate on recipes which eliminate the fats and sugars associated with weight gain while introducing healthier alternative ingredients which are readily available to buy and don’t cost the earth. Jo-Anne said the recipes were easy to make.

“I don’t have one bowl for sifting dry ingredients, and another for whisking eggs, I just put my oven on and throw everything into a blender.”

Jo-Anne underwent an eating revolution of her own, including breaking away from eating chocolate for breakfast and becoming aware that sugar fixes did nothing to enhance energy levels.

She believes that food is medicine and that good food starts in the gut – “that everything you eat should nurture you in some way”.

Those attending this free launch will be able to meet the author, sample some of the cupcakes offered as recipes and gain advice on healthy eating.

Molly was a little wild kitten who wandered into her owner’s yard early last year and stayed.

The Geminids meteor shower is predicted for this week, with the maximum expected to be around the 14th. Unfortunately, this year the full moon really gets in the way.

Meteors are best seen after midnight.

That’s because at that time, our part of Earth has turned to face the way it is heading around its orbit.

It’s like driving in the rain.

It may be pounding on the windscreen, but look at the rear window and you hardly notice it.

I’d tell you to go out after midnight on Saturday 14 and look north-east, but mostly all you will see is the glare of the moon.

Perhaps I can tell you something about the Gemini missions, the missions that preceded the Apollo moon missions.

I am part way through a biography of Neil Armstrong called First Man, and he is working in the Gemini project.

It reminded me of why I get so riled when people read and believe garbage that says the moon landings were a setup.

Most people, especially these days, have no idea of the pedigree of these men.

NASA didn’t just pluck able bodied men off the street and say “hey,

These men, and especially Armstrong, had immense experience as

flyers along with high level engineering degrees.

he became a hero in the Korean War. He then spent years as a test pilot, putting himself in horrendously dangerous flight situations to help develop safe flying.

Even before he was recruited by NASA’s space programs, he had flown to the edge of space in an experimental plane called the X15, which could fly

at six times the speed of sound.

A lot of the technology was trial and error, and it needed ingenuity, courage, and quick thinking to get out of the scrapes that happened all the time.

I am at the part in 1962 where Armstrong is performing the first docking in orbit, a necessary precursor to the requirements of the Apollo moon missions.

Chasing an object in orbit is phenomenally complex.

To move to object B somewhere in your sights, you can’t just head there – object B will most likely be in a different orbit.

You fire your rockets to catch up and you create more orbital spin out and move into another different orbit, and may find the object below you, or off to one side.

The maths involved is mind-boggling and with computers in their infancy, these guys had to have great threedimensional mathematical comprehension.

So, how insulting for someone to cast this skilled, courageous and dedicated man as a fraud, simply because they don’t know any of the history.

Print 2 Perfection For over a decade, Elya Matthews has been adding colour to woolsheds all over New Zealand.

Now, she’s brought the colour to central Masterton: opening her own clothing store and garment printing operation, That Print Shop on Perry, last month.

That Print Shop is the bricks and mortar store front for Elya’s clothing label Shear 2 Pink - a range of shearers’ singlets and hoodies, using bright accent colours and eye-catching patterns.

As well as featuring Shear 2 Pink pieces and other clothing brands, That Print Shop offers a range of clothing printing services for those looking to create their own signature looks – including vinyl, screen and direct-togarment printing.

Elya’s career as a designer and entrepreneur comes from humble beginnings, starting with a few handmade singlets she sold “for grocery money”.

At the time, she was a solo mother and working as a wool handler, but found it difficult to arrange childcare while doing long hours in the sheds – so decided to try designing and making her own shearing wear.

She saved up for three industrial sewing machines, and got to work.

“You see a lot of black clothes in shearing –I wanted to make something

colourful, that shearers could wear to express themselves.

“I started out by selling the singlets out of my car boot at the Golden Shears. Then, the orders started coming in.”

Since then, Elya has supplied Shear 2 Pink garments to shearers throughout New Zealand, Australia and the UK. She has also designed shearing wear for New Zealand champions Emily Welch and Kerri-Jo Te Huia, and for Canadian shearing legend Pauline Bolay – recently in New Zealand to attempt an eight-hour lamb shearing world record.

That Print Shop is the next step for Elya and partner Peter Elder – who respectively take care of the manufacturing and printing sides of the business, assisted by their five staff.

The store includes a new line of workwear, targeted at tradespeople such as truckers, engineers and glaziers, and a range of shearingthemed children’s clothing.

Elya and Peter look forward to working with local artists to bring their grand clothing designs to life.

“If you’ve got a big idea, we’ll get it printed for you. We love seeing what people can create.”

That Print Shop, 15 Perry St, is open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, and Saturday 9.30am to 2pm.

The government’s announcement that state schools will receive millions in extra funding has gone down like a lump of coal at Christmas for many state-integrated schools who won’t receive a cent of the boost.

A capital injection will be received by 20 stateowned primary schools and four state-owned secondary schools in the Wairarapa region and 54 schools across the Wairarapa electorate.

Amounts schools were chosen to receive was based on their roll.

Wairarapa College, the largest school in the region, was the only school to be selected to receive the maximum amount of $400,000.

Masterton Intermediate School, the next highest, was set to receive $381,150, with Kuranui College in line for $311,157, Lakeview School $288,981, and Greytown School $259,182.

Dalefield, Tinui, Mauriceville, and Pirinoa schools will receive the minimum amount of $50,000.

was old un-insulated prefabs, the toilets inside of which were old and in a desperate need of upgrading.

The school is set to receive $138,600. “[The capital injection] means that the rest of our school can be upgraded to be on a par with the new building,” Devenport said.

Makoura College principal Paul Green said the school would have “no trouble at all finding suitable projects” to spend its $185,724 on.

“Much of our regular ministry property income gets channelled into essential infrastructure demands like drainage or roofing, so this will enable us to have a bit of discretion to deal with wishlist things like upgrading our guidance and nurse support spaces.”

Douglas Park School was in line for $237,699.

CANINE PARVOVIRUS often requires intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and medications to control the vomiting and diarrhoea. Most dogs will not eat during this time and won’t eat again until vomiting has stopped, this can take 3-7 days. The outcome depends on the strain of parvovirus, and how quickly the treatment is started.

The best way to prevent an infection is to follow the current vaccination schedule, starting at 8-9 weeks, giving a vaccine every 2-4 weeks until age 16 weeks. Continuing vaccination every 1-3 years for adult dogs.

If you suspect parvovirus in a young dog with no or an incomplete vaccination history, with symptoms as described please contact your vet immediately and leave the patient in the car, where the vet is able to assess and often use a quick inhouse lab test to detect the virus.

Yet again we are seeing an increase in cases of parvovirus. This is a highly contagious and often fatal disease that is easily prevented by vaccination.

Parvovirus can affect dogs of all ages but typically puppies 6 to 20 weeks of age.

When parvovirus is present it affects the digestive tract.

Infected dogs will be unable to absorb fluids, leading to severe vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, lethargy and diarrhoea. The virus can survive for months in the environment and is resistant to many disinfectants, hence it can easily be picked up on a walk or brought home on your shoes.

Dogs with parvovirus require intensive veterinary management, in most cases hospitalisation is essential to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. This

CHRISTMAS AT COBBLESTONES Cobblestones Museum and Early Settlers’ Village is Greytown’s number one tourist attraction.

Even more, they enjoy tales of the challenges the early European settlers had when establishing Greytown, the first planned inland settlement in New Zealand.

Cobblestones receives assistance from the three Wairarapa district councils and Greytown Trust Lands Trust. But the Museum depends on volunteers for additional funding and to operate.

Cobblestones is named from the cobblestones surrounding the 1857 built Hastwell Stables. Until 1880, this was the region’s hub for Cobb & Co horse-drawn coaches from Wellington, with Hastwell Coaches serving Wairarapa. Imagine travelling the Remutakas in a coach!

If you are interested in our heritage Cobblestones would love to hear from you through its website. , As a volunteer you could greet visitors, assist to maintain the gardens and buildings, or help run events like the annual fair, or even help decorate the Christmas tree .

The Museum has a great interactive exhibit about Greytown’s Main Street 100 years ago. But the stories are much wider than Greytown, covering the history of Wairarapa.

The buildings include the Donald Woolshed with the renowned Donald patented wool press that was invented in the Wairarapa and sold worldwide in the 19th century. The woolshed has recently been renovated thanks to contributions from many of the district’s farming families. Cobblestones has the

Dolphins’ rocky rescue Three generations of a Wairarapa family led a brave rescue of a pod of dolphins at Tora’s rocky coastline, MARCUS ANSELM reports.

Dick Kai, his son Kevin, and grandson Lincoln Thomson-Kai rushed to help when dozens of dolphins were in trouble near Tora on Sunday, December 8.

They had got stuck after a scare from a group of orcas the Kais had spotted while diving earlier.

Dick Kai and his wife Lyn had returned home to Wairarapa for a family bereavement.

The family are experienced and regular divers.

Dick’s family had a bach at Castlepoint and his sons are often out on the coast.

They had seen the orcas while out diving for paua and crayfish – a rare luxury for Dick, who now lives in Surfers Paradise.

They had finished up for the morning at about 11am when they noticed several dolphins stuck up against

“We were heading back from Tora and round the next bay we saw orcas, killer whales in the water,” Dick said.

“We thought it seemed strange there was some many around. We looked down the hill, down the cliff face – it wasn’t a big cliff face – and there were these dolphins who were obviously scared and been

chased by the killer whales.

“They weren’t beached, but they were hard up against the rocks with nowhere else to go.

“The boy and my grandson went down. I don’t know how many they herded back in. It was literally dozens.

“Some were bleeding as they hit the sharp rocks.

“And you know how frantic they would be. We couldn’t just leave them there.

“Once we herded them back into deeper water, they swam round in their shoals. We don’t really know [after that].

“We were there for about 40 or 50 minutes.

“We herded as much as we could. By that time, there was about another 30 or 40 people there. The boys got them all out, my son and my grandson.

“But we can’t speak for after that. They may have been chased back in. But

that’s about the guts of it.

“We left satisfied that we’d done all we could, but they may have come back in. But that’s nature.”

Kevin, who led the rescue, said he told his son Lincoln that is what you should do if you see an animal in distress.

“It’s just one of those things. You just do what you’ve got to do.”

The Department of Conservation have been informed.

Dog discovers crash victim

A local developer has been chosen for a build and leaseback agreement with the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) building in Masterton.

GWRC has agreed in principle to sell its former Masterton office at 34 Chapel St, to local property development company Endeavour Concepts Limited, which will develop a new building and lease it back to GWRC. The former Masterton offices received an earthquake rating of just 45 per cent New Building Standard [NBS] for the front part of the Chapel St main office building and the rear part 35 per cent to 40 per cent of NBS. It has only been used for meetings since October 2018.

“It’s not a safe or efficient building, and our duty of care to staff and visitors requires us to provide

safe accommodation,” councillor Adrienne Staples said.

“Other than its seismic condition, the building also dates from 1966 and is effectively nearing the end of its functional and economic life.”

“While designs are yet to be completed, we’re looking at leasing a robust sustainable new building with reduced overall energy consumption, designed incorporating some key environmentally sustainable initiatives.

“It will also smarten up the Chapel St streetscape.”

GWRC had owned and occupied the building since acquiring the property from Masterton District Council in 1989.

In 2004, the adjoining property at 24-26 Chapel St was purchased for future redevelopment of the combined sites for a new GRWC Masterton office.

Greater Wellington staff work from temporary alternative office accommodation on level four of the Departmental Building where they have been operating since October 2018 with a lease in place to April 2021.

Greater Wellington considered several options, including searching the open market for new or existing building leases, staying on longterm at the Departmental Building, developing its own new building on the existing site and selling the existing property to a developer and leasing back the new building on the site.

After detailed analysis of the different options, option three of selling and leasing back was chosen.

An illustration of the building concept has been released but the design has not been finalised yet and is subject to change.

A badly hurt crash victim may have been stranded in a ditch all night if it wasn’t for the barking of a woman’s pet dogs.

A 30-year-old man had been driving into Masterton along Masterton-Castlepoint Rd on Thursday night when he crashed, about five minutes from town.

The man’s blue ute had rolled before coming to a stop on a woman’s front fence.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said her dogs “went nuts”, barking loudly at about 10.30pm.

When she couldn’t get them to be quiet, she went outside to have a look around.

When she came around to the front of her house, she saw car lights pointing straight towards her and heard faint yelling for help, instantly knowing that something was wrong.

She ran back inside and said she had never gotten ready that quickly in her life.

First on the scene, she found the crash victim lying in a ditch next to a damaged ute.

She didn’t know if he was there due to being ejected when it rolled, or

whether he managed to get out of the ute himself.

She said she didn’t hear the crash at all – it was only her dogs that alerted her that something had happened.

While calling emergency services, she tried to wave down passing traffic for help.

She was disappointed when the first vehicle drove right past and didn’t stop to help.

“I was yelling and waving my flashlight around,” the woman said.

There was also glass and debris everywhere which she said would have been hard to miss.

The next car stopped and helped until emergency services arrived.

The woman said emergency services were great and very quick at processing the scene and clearing up the road.

The crash victim was in a serious condition and flown to Wellington Hospital by Life Flight’s Westpac rescue helicopter.

The road was closed while Serious Crash Unit investigated.

A spokesperson for Capital and Coast District Health Board would not release the patient’s injury status.

Better outcomes for our younger drivers A mentor programme aimed at helping teenagers get their driving licences is having far reaching benefits in the community.

Wairarapa Road Safety Council (WRSC) manager Bruce Pauling is part of the management team running the Community Driver Mentor Programme.

He said the programme outcomes ticked many boxes.

“Safe young drivers, improved employment opportunities, independence, and sociability, and staying out of the ‘justice merrygo-round’, all add up to less crash trauma and therefore huge savings on social costs, adding value to our workforce and local business economy, and reduced traffic fines and

police records.”

The programme is supported by staff at four local colleges, driving instructors, REAP House, police, and local businesses.

All three Wairarapa district councils, NZTA, and Trust House Foundation have made the programme possible through funding to ensure its sustainability.

Bruce said the programme relied on community volunteers, who every week spent time coaching the teens to become safe drivers and gain their driver licences.

“These wonderful volunteers as real community heroes.

“They give up their time throughout the year to mentor young drivers to achieve something

they possibly couldn’t do without this support.

“They all have a passion to make a real difference for the youth and have a real connection with their students. Hopefully at the end of the year we should be closing in on 100 successful restricted licence passes.”

The programme also supports new immigrants and refugees, clients from Oranga Tamariki, and the local Iwi Justice Panel, with other partnerships being explored.

Community driver mentor volunteers got together for a Christmas function to celebrate their efforts in helping young people become safe drivers through gaining a licence, which was a pathway to employment.

I am of course referring to the kokako, one of New Zealand’s most endangered birds.

Readers of this column will know that increasing numbers have been seen from our Visitors Centre in recent months.

It’s been hard for staff to fathom because many thought they’d never see that day.

There are only two species of kokako – North Island and South Island.

Both look similar but the North Island has blue wattles and the South

Brass band a family affair Karen Coltman Five members of the Lower family marched and blew in time for about 1.5km up Queen St at Masterton’s Christmas Parade last weekend.

The Lowers are members of the Masterton District Brass Band, playing Christmas carols at events throughout December.

Narissa Lower has been a band member for 23 years.

She said a big part of their practice sessions were to get the marching right.

“We practice marching up and down Park Ave behind the police station.

“You need to get your marching worked out before you get the instruments going.

“Blowing into an instrument and marching is hard.”

The oldest member of the band, which has been running for 146 years, is 80-year-old Norm Henderson and the youngest is Dylan Lower at age 12.

Narissa’s sons Joshua, 13, and Dylan marched for their first time at the Carterton Christmas Parade.

“The brass instruments are heavy so they’re doing really well,” Narissa said.

“Josh is playing a single tuber with a harness.

“It is also hard when you are hot, and the mouthpiece gets slippery.

“I have to stop playing and wipe it down, have a breather and get going again.”

Martinborough’s Christmas parade is on Saturday 14 at 5pm.

‘Weed capital of Wairarapa’ Karen Coltman Carterton man Ken Hodgson is calling his town the “weed capital of Wairarapa” and fellow resident Neil Hickland says it “definitely has the best weed in town”.

“Carterton is a place where you can grow ‘weed’ without interference. It grows in abundance in well-designed troughs, is easily accessible, it is well watered naturally and is fed with local compost,” said Hodgson, who notes it is also free.

Hodgson and Hickland are not talking about cannabis, but weeds growing in gutters and on footpaths.

The two retired men want Carterton District Council (CDC) to get its contractors to get on top of the situation because the weeds make their town look bad.

“This is our high road, with the Wild Oats cafe probably the busiest place in town, and we have tourists here, but all the weeds in the gutters and blocked gutters look a mess, it’s a disgrace,” Hickland said.

The two men pointed out to the Times-Age weeds growing in gutters and on the footpaths on Pembroke St, Rhodes St, High St North, Broadway,

McKenzie Terrace and Wheatstone St. Along with questions about weed control, Hodgson asked the CDC under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act what plans it had to repair footpaths.

In its response on October 21, CDC said it assessed the footpaths every three years and any issues raised by residents were acted upon within budget allowances.

Both Hodgson and Hickland said the general state of many footpaths meant they were dangerous.

“To walk up a footpath around here is waiting for an accident to happen,” Hickland said.

“A mate of mine now can’t walk down the footpath as it is too uneven, so he walks on the road.”

Hickland was particularly annoyed about overhanging trees and hedges obstructing the footpaths.

“The hedge just north of the roundabout is taking up half of the footpath.”

“Residents are asked to maintain hedges on their own properties which may overgrow onto footpaths and we will be issuing a number of overhanging branch notices in the coming weeks.”

To manage the weed issue, parks and reserves manager Clinton Thompson said his team had been steaming weeds and following up with biospray.

“Spraying and physical weed control is currently in full effect. The growth of the town over the last few years has seen the workload of berm mowing

and weed control grow significantly, and our staff have been working overtime for the past two weekends to complete the mowing circuit and to weed eat the weed around trees in preparation for spraying.”

A casual worker has been employed to help complete the work during the busy season, and overtime was scheduled over the weekend.

“Weeds in areas where we have steamed and physically removed them have started to emerge again in a short time.”

Thompson said there were other factors that had added to the time involved with these operations.

As part of the roading contract, Fulton Hogan sprayed the kerb and the roadside channel with Glyphosate but the council did it now and was attempting to reduce the amount of glyphosate and pre-emergent chemicals used.

While the council was committed to switching to a cleaner and greener methodology, Thompson said this came with challenges.

“This new methodology will require significantly more time and resources and are labour intensive.”

An annual tournament held at the Riversdale Beach Golf Club has this year raised $13,100 for Life Flight.

It was the 25th anniversary of the golf event, run each year by Mitre 10 Mega Masterton.

Store co-owner Rex Slight said the store was proud to be raising lifesaving funds for Life Flight, which last year flew 165 missions in Wairarapa, often to remote locations.

A long-standing organiser of the tournament, he said Life Flight was a vital and well utilised asset to the community.

“They save lives and need all the support we can give them.

“My family and I spend a lot of time out at Riversdale and we often see the Westpac chopper flying overhead to help someone on that stretch of coast.

“We all know it’s a

long drive to Wellington Hospital from there, and it’s been great to be able to help them out while having a fun day out on the course.”

The Riversdale community gets behind the event, with the Riversdale club donating the use of the course for the tournament.

Mitre 10 Mega suppliers and customers also support it by donating prizes and auction items, and staff volunteering their time to help on the day.

Ironically, the Westpac helicopter was called out to Riversdale during last year’s golf fundraising day.

“During the prize giving we heard that the Westpac chopper was on its way to Riversdale to help one of the local guys who’d had a medical emergency,” Rex said.

Joy and grief can co-exist Don’t judge how you feel

Belinda Noyes For many reasons Christmas isn’t always a cheery family gathering that is often the picture we see in movies. For some people this will be their last Christmas, for others it’s the first Christmas without a loved one.

If grief is casting a shadow on your holiday season this year, here are some practical tips that might make things a bit easier.

Grief is not a bad thing, nor is sadness – they just feel unpleasant when they show up.

Try not to label any uncomfortable feelings as bad.

Equally it is important that we don’t tell ourselves we are ‘okay’ only if joy is present or that we are ‘handling things’ only if we feel happy.

You can still be okay and be sad, you can still be coping yet be emotional.

You are entitled to feel however you feel and don’t need to place a judgement on it.

Give it the freedom for it to be whatever it is – it will soon transform into another feeling.

Be aware of your expectations

We feel disappointment when our expectations aren’t met.

Ensure that what you are wanting to happen is realistic and within your control.

Anchor yourself.

If overwhelm starts to take over then anchor yourself to the present moment.

You can do this by taking three deep changing breaths (inhale through the nose – stomach inflates, exhale through the mouth – stomach deflates).

Consciously doing this three times brings you into the now and anchors you to what is real and happening in THIS moment – not in

the future or back in the past where your thoughts might have been taking you.

Self-care

Self-care is more than just a buzz word.

It is connecting with yourself.

It is ensuring that your needs are being met.

This can be so hard for many of us to do.

We start just by asking the question, “What do I need right now?”

Sometimes the answer is a cry, a nap, a bath, a walk, a laugh, or to talk with someone.

Notice moments of joy

Even in extreme suffering there can be moments of

bliss – it might only last for a few seconds but notice when joy is present.

Joy and grief can coexist.

Enliven’s Masterton rest homes feeling festive Christmas celebrations are in full swing at Enliven’s Kandahar Home and Court in Masterton.

Kandahar Court, Enliven’s specialist home for elders with dementia, kicked off the celebrations with a Christmas party last Friday.

“We were donated a real Christmas tree this year and the beautiful pine smell is helping to spark memories of Christmases past for some of the residents,” says recreation team leader Di McCuish.

Never too young for road safety lessons

Kandahar Home and Court manager Peter Newman says the Kandahar Home party will be centred around its regular happy hour, but with more of a “Christmassy” theme.

“We have dancing and fun and drinks.”

Peter says Christmas Day lunch is a big event at the Masterton rest home.

“We have volunteers who come in and some staff who aren’t working that day will drop in,” he says.

“Lots of whaˉnau come too. Some take their loved ones out, while others stay here and have lunch with us.”

The residents are in the process of designing the menu for Christmas Day, Peter says.

National Beep Beep! Day was held last month, with the aim to teach young children about road safety.

Porse in-home childcare educators celebrated at the Lighthouse Church during their music and movement session.

Songs were sung about travel and Holly Hullena, Wairarapa Road Safety Council’s (WRSC) school travel planner, was there to share simple road safety messages through storytelling.

“Beep Beep! Day is a great way to teach young

children aged 2-7 some road safety basics, and also engage parents, carers and the wider community in road safety.

“Everybody is a road user and so we all need to know about road safety.

“The younger we can start taking in these messages, the more we create positive habits when it comes to travel and interacting with the roading network.”

Holly said educating children was a rewarding task.

“The kids were helping

me tell the story by the end and knew what to do – always hold an adult’s hand, making seatbelts click, and getting out of the car on the footpath side.”

Road Safety Week 2020 will be held May 4-10.

Holly is encouraging groups, schools and workplaces to take part in the awareness raising week.

Pūkaha welcomes members Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre has confirmed the appointment of two new members to its board – Moira Paewai and Murray McKee. The appointments come after long-term board members Kate Clark (NZTA) and Duncan Fletcher (PGG Wrightson) stepped down at the recent AGM. Board chair Bob Francis said Pūkaha was poised for growth in 2020 so a strong governance team was essential, with the new members expected to bring a wealth of high-level business experience.

McKee is based in Greytown and has an extensive career in Oil & Gas and the New Zealand Fire Service.

His conservation credentials include chair of the New Zealand National Parks Foundation and he is also a founding trustee of the Pūkaha to Palliser Trust.

Paewai, of Dannevirke, is a director in chartered accountancy firm MCI & Associates and a passionate contributor to the Tararua community.

There is still one vacancy to fill following Clive Patton’s retirement from the board.

Women develop red meat wisdom

Gianina Schwanecke More than 1900 women have graduated from the Understanding Your Farming Business [UYFB] programme run by the Agri-Women’s Development Trust.

Last month, 16 Wairarapa women graduated from the course.

Programme manager Anna Harriman said women from a variety of backgrounds and experiences signed up for the course.

“The majority were involved in farming in some way. We also had a few ladies who were rural professionals – bankers, accountants, and the like.”

It was first launched

by AWDT’s founder, Lindy Nelson, after she realised there were some information gaps, Harriman said.

The programme is designed for women involved in red meat farming to get a better idea of what drives their business.

It comprises three modules taught over a three-month period, with one full day dedicated teaching each month.

The first module, ‘Measuring Farm Performance’, focuses on stock reconciliation, feed budgeting, and other key

performance indicators.

Women learn more about GST, livestock taxes, and other financial matters in the ‘Understanding your Financial Statements’ module, which includes going through sample accounts.

The third module focuses on ‘Business Planning’, such as setting goals and showing the women how to apply the lessons learnt.

“The best thing about this programme is that it’s designed for women in all ages and stages,”

Harriman said.

She said this was one of the aspects of the course which many women enjoyed the most as it meant there was also an opportunity for participants to learn from each other.

“The learning off others in the group and the facilitators is just so beneficial. It’s also something they’re not necessarily expecting.”

People living on farms, particularly those in a new area, could feel quite isolated at times so

the course was good for building connections in the community, she said.

The course is fully funded through the Red Meat Profit Partnership [RMPP], which is working to help the red meat sector increase productivity and profitability.

AWDT aims to have 2500 women through the course by the time RMPP disbands late next year.

And they seem on track to do so, with 1900 women expected to graduate by the end of this year [2019].

“Along with generating plans for more resilient businesses, women learn financial and benchmarking skills and how to positively influence decision making in their farming teams, and with their banks and advisers.”

More than 130 sheep farmers will have graduated this year, and 320 have been targeted in the programme next year.

Sims said for many farming couples the programme was the first time that they had taken time out to step back and look at the big picture together, then break it down into achievable, measurable steps.

“The business plans developed by participants are increasingly centred on family, environmental, farm succession and diversification goals, alongside financial targets,” she said.

“Proactively planning together creates understanding and confidence in future direction.”

As an example, one couple who had invested

in fencing waterways and biodiversity for 15 years was now planning to diversify into farm tourism that would enable farm succession, she said.

Others included aiming for 90 per cent recycling, improved marketing to grow a farm tourism business, reducing debt, focusing on time off farm with family, addressing climate change and improving water quality.

The Masterton programme will run July 2 and July 30.

Shearer’s Jeans, a tribute

Aroha Te Whata I put my shearer’s jeans on one leg at a time. I have no use for airs and graces.

The sheep never stop kicking, and my muscles are taut with the strain.

Calluses on my hands are the last line of defence against the thistles that sting as wool peels away from the warm flesh of the sheep.

My handpiece judders like chattering teeth, threatening to break lose, with only my hand to tame it.

I remember a shearer who once allowed a locked handpiece to bury itself in his bicep in order to spare the face of a young woolhandler.

A bloody mess that became a livid scar.

It could have been worse, for this is dangerous work.

My day began at 4am and the spark of steel on the emery disks of my grinder will be flaring as night falls. There are combs to sharpen, and cutters to clean, and the next day will be the same.

On and on, sheep after sheep, day after day, no end in sight, no weekend to speak of.

Only rain can bring it all to a screeching halt.

who continued to work even after he’d developed gangrene in his leg – skin falling away like bark.

It could have been worse; he could’ve lost the leg.

From coast to coast, and one remote location to another.

I have to go where the work is, though it takes me

far from my family and the comfort of my own bed.

The roads are long and the tally counter of my mileage keeps ticking over.

I swat a fly with The Art of War by Sun Tzu, a book I’ll read one of these days, when time permits.

I remember the conversation I’d had with another shearer during our

“Have you heard that long term exposure to chemicals in the wool can affect the nervous system?”

I’d had to shake my head no.

I wondered later if the numbness in my fingers was a result of those chemicals.

There’s no way to know, and it could be worse, because I love my job: the drive to be better, the camaraderie, and a cool beer at the end of a hard day.

Lanolin, shearers glue, dynamo, earth and grass – the scents of my trade.

When I get home, it isn’t long before I’m back to sharpening cutters and shaping combs.

My six-year-old son stands in the doorway of the shed and I gesture for him to sit beside me.

He picks up a comb and presses his small fingers against the shining teeth.

I ask him about school.

Has he been listening to his mother?

My youngster nods in the affirmative, but his focus remains firmly fixed on the grinder.

“Shall we start it up?”

My son’s face lights up.

The disks spin, sparks flying.

He doesn’t leave my side until the job is finished.

After dinner, my daughters squeal with laughter as I pretend to shear each one in turn.

When I come to my son, he stops me saying, “I’m not the sheep dad, I’m the shearer!”

I mess up his hair affectionately. “Are you now?”

“Yes. I’m gonna be a shearer like you when I grow up!”

I want to warn him about the pain, and uncertainty.

The toll of being asked to give so much for so little, but I can tell by the look in his eyes that it’s already too late.

Shearing it seems, is in his blood.

The highlight of the day was having the RNZAF Band lead the parade and then put on a musical performance after the prize-giving. The list of world class riders entered in next month’s New Zealand Cycle Classic continues to grow.

Race director Jorge Sandoval says three new international teams will make their debut in New Zealand’s premier cycle race being staged in Wairarapa from January 15-19. The five-stage elite international men’s road cycling race is the only Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) 2.2 sanctioned race to be held in New Zealand in 2020.

Sandoval says CMI Pro Cycling, a team with a UCI registration in Guam, is one of three new teams, and is made up of experienced riders from six different countries.

The other two new teams coming to New Zealand are Memil Pro, a UCI continental team registered from Sweden, and Sapura team from Malaysia.

“The interest for next year’s NZ Cycle Classic from international teams has been really great and at this stage we will have 12 nationalities represented,” says Sandoval. “It’s exciting for New Zealand and Wairarapa to lay out the welcome mat to these experienced riders and I’ve no doubt their inclusion will make for such an

Sandoval says while CMI Pro Cycling has been in existence for nine years and was previously called Equipe CMI (registered in the USA and based in France), the line-up of riders tackling the Tour next month will be new.

The team will be headed

by Great Britain’s Simeon Green and French rider Guillaume Soula and will also feature Romania’s Lars Pria, Malta’s Alexander Smyth, Guam’s Jonathon Martin and kiwi rider Matias Fitzwater.

Green is super excited about coming to New Zealand.

“The New Zealand Cycle

Classic is a race you tend to hear a bit about in Europe because it is so early, so I’ve followed it over the years. I’ve never started a cycling season this early before, but the opportunity to go all the way around the other side of the earth and race in a country you hear so many amazing things about is super motivating.

Romanian rider Lars Pria agrees. “(I’m) really looking forward to participate in New Zealand’s biggest race.

I’ve never been in NZ, so would be amazing to spend some more time there and see it.”

The other team making

its NZ Cycle Classic debut is Memil Pro cycling team.

Team manager Fredrik Strid, from Sweden, says after the team debuted in 2017 it had a breakthrough 2018 season. This year they’ve continued to grow on that success and have achieved multiple stage wins and fourth place in the overall general classification at the Tour of Qinghai, as well as achieved podiums and top ten performances in UCI events across three different continents.

by Australian Samuel Volkers and also features Taiwanese rider Chien Liang Chen.

The third team making it NZ Cycle Classic debut is Sapura, led by experienced Moldovan rider Cristian Raileanu who is his country’s 2019 national road champion, time trial champion as well as King of the Mountains in the 2018 Tour of Romania.

He also won the Tour of Cartier in Turkey and Sandoval picks he will be one of many riders to watch in January’s Tour.

Raileanu is in great company with Australian Marcus Culey also a member of the team, Culey a former winner of the Tour de Molvccas in Indonesia as well as stage winner of Langkawi and many others.

Being held simultaneously with the NZ Cycle Classic will be a series of community events that celebrate Wairarapa’s bike-friendly roads, tracks and trails; the people who ride on them and the bikes they ride with.

The 2020 NZ Cycle Classic is able to take place thanks to the generous support from Trust House, WBS, Mobile Communications Service, WIZwireless, Fagan Motors, Mitre 10 Mega Masterton and Lion Foundation plus all three Wairarapa district councils.
