50 years of good reads

A

fter almost 50 years at the helm of the family business, there’s no greater satisfaction for David and Jenny Hedley than “seeing lives changed for the better” by the power of a good book.

David and Jenny, owners of Masterton’s Hedley’s Books, have been honoured for their decades of service to the book trade — receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2002 Aotearoa Book Industry Awards.

The awards, organised by Booksellers Aotearoa NZ and the Publishers Association of New Zealand, celebrate excellence within New Zealand’s literary industry, recognising the highest performing authors, publishers and retailers.

The Lifetime Achievement Award honours those who have made an “exceptional and longterm contribution to books and publishing in Aotearoa”.

To say the Hedley whanau has made a long-term commitment to selling books would be an understatement.

Hedley’s Books was founded by David’s grandfather, Alex Hedley, in 1907: back when Masterton “still had dirt streets” and readers poured over the local paper by gas light.

David took over the bookstore from his father, William Hedley, in 1974, with wife Jenny joining him in the business in 1981.

In the half-century since the couple took the reins, there’s been some challenging times for the book industry: economic downturns, the rise of online retail and digital publishing, and competition from television streaming platforms, to name a few.

Throughout, Hedley’s has remained a staple of the community — beloved among Wairarapa bibliophiles for its warm atmosphere, collection of locallypublished works, numerous book launches and ever-popular Yarns in Barns festival.

As Jenny put it: “Since Hedley’s opened, we’ve had two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Global Financial Crisis, Borders and Amazon, Netflix, and covid. And we’re still here, still selling books.

“It goes to show: People have a thousand different options for their entertainment, and they still want to curl up in a corner with their favourite book”.

Blue sky thinking for Featherston

Featherston residents have been invited to do some “blue sky thinking” as to how they envision the town centre looking within the next 30 years.

South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] is consulting with the Featherston community on its Master Plan proposal: which sets out aspirations to enhance urban growth in Featherston and support the rejuvenation of the town centre.

One of the main concepts within the Master Plan discussion document is moving the Featherston Railway Station closer to town.

Featherston has been identified in SWDC’s Spatial Plan as a “growth area” — an area with potential for “more urban development and renewal”.

The Master Plan investigates the potential for development within the town centre, including densifying the area [increasing density of housing on available land] around the railway station.

SWDC is asking

Featherston’s Master Plan proposes two options for enhancing growth in Featherston — including moving the railway station close to the centre of town.

Featherston locals to provide feedback, via a survey, on two potential options: intensifying housing around the present railway station and the main street; or moving the station closer to the main street and densifying around both.

Russell O’Leary, SWDC’s group manager of planning and regulation, said Featherston’s growing population will likely mean significant changes to town planning — and it was

important for SWDC to plan ahead.

“With 1700 people expected to move to Featherston over the next 30 years, some intensification of the town is going to be needed,” O’Leary said.

“Planners generally [intensify] around a main street and public transport is always a big factor.

“Featherston is well served by the train — so, it makes sense to increase housing around the train

station as well.”

O’Leary said Featherston’s main street was also central to the plan, and SWDC is keen to hear how residents envision the CBD taking shape.

“We want the street to be thriving, so making it a place where there could be mixed-use — housing and shops, for example — should be considered.”

O’Leary said one of the “most important parts” of the Master Plan is the

rezoning element: with both proposed options involving a “medium” density zone, allowing sections of 200sqm.

Currently, the minimum within the township is 500sqm.

Both options would mean residents with bigger sections (800sqm plus) could subdivide, something many cannot do at present.

More density in Featherston “can look great if planned and

designed carefully”, O’Leary said.

“It would enable more two-storey houses, townhouses, duplexes and apartments. That would be good for older people wanting to downsize or younger people struggling to afford a home.”

SWDC is also asking residents to share thoughts on protecting Featherston’s historic features as the town landscape changes, and how its Māori heritage could be better represented in town planning.

SWDC has also organised dropin sessions for people to talk with a town planner at the Anzac Hall. These will be on Thursday, August 11 from 6.30pm - 8pm, and Tuesday, August 16, from 5pm - 7pm.

A Wairarapa disability organisation is helping young people gain work experience, pursue creative passions, and connect with their communities and one another.

The Mahi Tahi Tatou Charitable Trust was founded last year by chairwoman Rebecca Stevens — aiming to “enable good lives” for disabled people through employment, education and community participation.

In February, the Trust started running a day programme from its new Masterton premises: where disabled school leavers can learn life skills, work on creative projects, engage in social activities, and work within social enterprises.

Stevens, a former school principal and mother of two children with disabilities, started the Trust to support and create opportunities for disabled rangatahi once they leave school.

One of its main aims is to promote social inclusion — and reduce social isolation and loneliness for youth with disabilities.

“Disabled people are often isolated. For example, many can’t work, so they miss out on the social interaction that brings,” Stevens said.

“Transport can be inaccessible, which means they can’t get out and about.

“So, it’s important to us to give young people the opportunity to connect with others, form relationships and enjoy life in their community. That’s

just as important as them learning to make a meal or use a bank card.”

At the day programme, school leavers and students transitioning

into the community are supported by 10 volunteers and a paid support worker.

Attendees take part in cooking classes, receive mentorship while job

hunting, do art and crafts, and do woodwork projects at the on-site workshop.

The programme also includes regular trips to Come Sew With Me, King Street Artworks and Trust House Recreation Centre, as well as excursions to Pukaha, the Wool Shed, and the Fell Engine Museum.

To foster work opportunities for clients, the Trust has also created several small businesses — focusing on furniture restoration and making tealight candles — and hopes to set up its own charity shop.

“Not everyone is going to fit within that 40-hour a week box.

So, we’re creating work environments to fit them,” Stevens said.

“Employment and a regular income means

independence and the ability to participate in society. Disabled people deserve that opportunity.”

Young people and their whanau also attend a weekly bowling league at Masterbowl — with the Trust hoping to set up a Special Olympics bowling team.

Stevens said she is “blown away” by the support the Trust has received — from families, schools, community organisations, and the wider community, which has helped with fundraising and provided donations.

“The awards were presented as part of the Booksellers Aotearoa Conference in Auckland — and we hadn’t planned on going,” he said.

“We got a call [from the organisers] asking why we hadn’t registered. They said, ‘we really think you should come this year’.

“That was a hint that something was afoot. We thought ‘well, we’d better pack our glad rags.’”

The biggest surprise came at the awards dinner — with the Hedleys accolade presented by son Alex [named for his entrepreneurial greatgrandfather], a publisher for Harper Collins New Zealand.

“It was quite emotional, actually,” David said.

“Jenny and I have dedicated our lives to family and to selling books. So, it’s lovely to have that endorsement from our peers — who have acknowledged the commitment we’ve made to the people of Wairarapa.

“Literature plays a huge role in our lives. Reading transports us to different worlds. A good book can enhance a person’s life, or even change it for the better — and the people who bring the books to the public are an important part of that process.

“Plus, it’s an endorsement of our town and our region — we’re a well-read bunch in Wairarapa.”

Hedley’s Books began life in the early 20th century as a humble, yet well-patronised newsagent, stocking newspapers and magazines, and a small collection of books imported from overseas.

Book sales, David explained, “built up over time” — with New Zealand’s publishing industry gaining traction after World War II. One of the first Kiwi

They love picking up a book and holding it, the smell of fresh paper, the feel as they turn the pages.

Reading is a sensory experience. A screen can’t replace that. titles to hit the shelves was Barry Crump’s A Good Keen Man, published in 1960 — a top seller, despite some initial complaints about “colourful language”.

David’s recalled working in the shop alongside his father William — and has clear memories of his Dad’s skill with his Smith Corona typewriter, still displayed on the shop floor.

“This was before computers and fax machines — so, to make a book order, you’d type it up and put it in the mail.

“Dad was a great typist — he could touch type pretty fast on his old machine. Even so, it was a much slower pace of life back then. There was no air freight, so you’d wait several months for books

to arrive from England by sea.”

When David assumed ownership 1970s, business was booming — and the store served as a social hub for a community of sharpeyed readers.

“Television was still in its infancy and, of course, there was no internet.

So, the printed word was where people got their information and inspiration, and how they

connected to the rest of the world.

“Reading was, for many people, their main form of relaxation.”

Farming families made up the lion’s share of the clientele, selecting mostly adventure series and romantic fiction.

These days, fiction continues to fly off the shelves — though the Hedleys have noticed a recent uptake in non-

fiction, especially on “the topical issues” of politics, science, and philosophy.

Jenny attributes this to a healthy suspicion of the digital landscape. “[Australian comedian] Tim Minchin once said that truth and lies all look the same on the internet,” she said.

“People know they can’t always trust what they read online — so, if they want the correct

information, they’d rather read a book.”

Also popular in recent years has been the selfimprovement section — with books such as Dr Hinemoa Elder’s Aroha, a collection of advice for “living a harmonious life” from a te ao Maori perspective, proving a particular success.

“Originally, the publisher only printed about 3000 copies of her book — now they’ve been scambling to reprint it,” David said.

“It reflects the times we’re living in — looking after our mental health has become a real priority.”

The Hedleys say there was some initial trepidation within the industry, following the rise of electronic reading services such as Kindle and Audible.

However, after all these years, it’s clear there’s nothing like a “real” book.

“We get a lot of younger people coming in, and they’re happy to be in an actual bookshop,” Jenny said.

“They love picking up a book and holding it, the smell of fresh paper, the feel as they turn the pages.

“Reading is a sensory experience. A screen can’t replace that.”

After a grand total of almost 90 years in the book trade between them, coming to work is still “invigorating” for David and Jenny.

“Every day, you’re surrounded by so many different ideas,” David said.

“Through each book, you get to know a different person — and their thoughts and their memories. Each new book is like making a new friend.

“At the moment, there are an estimated 200,000 book titles in New Zealand bookstores. It’s still incredible to me that the human brain can produce so many stories.

“To know we can enhance people’s lives by sharing those stories is a great feeling.”

Praise for healthy kai A Wairarapa community organisation has received high praise for its work to help reduce food insecurity for local rangatahi.

Trust House is one of the providers contracted to deliver the government’s Ka Ora, Ka Ako — Healthy Lunches in Schools Programme: preparing and transporting nutritious lunches to schools and kura throughout Wairarapa, Tararua and Hawke’s Bay. Piloted by the Ministry of Education in 2020, Ka Ora, Ka Ako delivers meals to schools that fall within the highest 25 per cent of socioeconomic disadvantage — where students face the greatest barriers to education, wellbeing and achievement.

As of June 2022, over 58 million lunches have been delivered to over 220,000 learners across 947 schools.

Seventeen of those schools receive meals prepared by Trust House — which uses six kitchens across its various hospitality businesses to prepare close to 3,500 hot lunches per day.

Last month, the Ministry of Education invited officials to an event, held at the Copthorne Solway Park in Masterton, to showcase Trust House and

its successful delivery of Ka Ora, Ka Ako locally.

Ministry senior advisor Howie Bruce said Trust House is “one of the programme’s best performers in the country”.

“Trust House has really nailed the lunch programme — they are doing an amazing job,” Bruce said.

“I think one of their real strengths is the diversity they have in their kitchens.

“Most suppliers have one kitchen that would do 20 schools. In Wairarapa, there is one kitchen doing two or three schools.

“It helps schools form a bond with individual kitchens, get to know the kitchen staff, and put in

menu requests.”

Bruce said Trust House’s kitchens have “done a great job” designing lunches that are both nutritious and appealing to students.

Favourites include southern-style chicken wraps, macaroni and cheese, chicken sushi, fish burgers, and beef burritos.

Trust House Limited chief executive Charles Kaka said Ka Ora, Ka Ako has created 30 new jobs in Wairarapa and enabled the business to better optimise its kitchen assets.

“For the [staff] who are engaged with the programme, there is a real sense of purpose — providing kai for our

We’re willing to tolerate poverty

vote, and we keep voting for governments that do no more than tinker around the edges of the chasm in our society.

If I had as little hope as many New Zealanders who are struggling to exist, I’d very likely find in a gang the sense of belonging society denies me.

Desperation, alcohol and drugs would probably lead me to crime and to prison, where the state would support me to the tune of $150,000 a year.

In a New Zealand Listener article, Rebecca Macfie quotes a member of the Welfare Expert Advisory Group (most of whose recommendations the government ignored in 2019) as saying: “We have as much poverty as we are willing to tolerate.

And, unfortunately, we’re willing to tolerate quite a lot”.

This is the Aotearoa we’ve created.

Your editorial about crime and poverty [Midweek, 20 July] was right on the button. Those of us who live comfortably in our own warm, dry houses, are healthy, and have enough to eat and pay the bills, worry too much about crime. And too little about poverty, the scourge of our nation.

In 1991, on the supposed basis that people who need our support are a burden on the economy, we severely reduced that support [by cutting benefits]. At the same time, we passed legislation to promote an “efficient labour market”. This pulled the rug out from under the unions that had protected workers’ incomes and rights. It created a new class of impoverished people, with jobs that pay too little to support a reasonable standard of living.

Meanwhile, the rest of us [especially those with property] have become even more comfortably off. We are the ones who

I believe it’s an insult to any prospective councillors to say that they need protection because of their race. Unbelievable in the year 2022. We have had councillors of Maori heritage all over New Zealand for many years. Never in my wildest dreams have I heard such, dare I say, racist nonsense.

At this stage, if you are a baby boomer standing for office, you are more likely to cop abuse. I hope that those councillors who are standing and are offered this support tell those in charge that it’s not necessary — “we can paddle our own waka”.

I just hope that this is someone’s idea of a very poor joke.

I’d like to report a raffle winner A talented troupe of young vocalists are a step closer to representing Wairarapa in the Big Sing Finale — thanks to a truckload of firewood and a helping hand from Masterton Police.

Viva Camerata, Rathkeale College and St Matthew’s Collegiate’s auditioned choir, were one of 24 choirs selected for the national finals of the Big Sing festival — the premier competition for secondary school choral groups nationwide.

In preparation for the finale, held later this month at Christchurch Town Hall, the students

have been hard at work fundraising to cover their travel and accommodation costs.

Viva Camerata members have put together raffles with a variety of major prizes — including a trailer of firewood, organised

by Year 13 student Eloise Bannister and her family.

Lending a hand with the fundraising efforts was Masterton Police Station, with Senior Sergeant Jen Hansen drawing the winning ticket for Eloise’s raffle. Thanks to raffle ticket sales and donations, Eloise was able to raise $2700 towards the trip.

The winning raffle ticket was drawn by Greytown local Jayne Towler — who gifted the firewood to a friend in Carterton, who has young children.

Eloises’ mum AnnaMarie Devoe wanted to thank “the generous public who supported us with good cheer”.

Viva Camerata members still have tickets available for their group raffle, which includes prizes such as a New World voucher, a two-night stay at Riversdale Beach, and a case of Martinborough mixed wines.

It takes a lot of effort for roses to provide us with their glorious floral display & delight us with their sensational scent. Help them out by giving them some TLC - but don’t wait too much longer, spring is almost here!

Winter is an important time in the rose garden.

It’s the time to: SHOP FOR NEW VARIETIES: Garden centres stock up on new season supplies during winter so that is when the best selection is available.

PLANT & TRANSPLANT: It is less stressful to do this while the roses are not actively growing.

SPRAY ESTABLISHED PLANTS: This is important to try and kill eggs from pests and spores from fungus that could be hiding out over winter.

We only receive new stock from growers once a year, and this is while they are dormant in winter.

We buy roses from numerous growers throughout New Zealand which was a bonus for us this year as many places had trouble fulÿ lling orders for certain varieties due to unavailable or low numbers. We highly recommend if you are wanting a particular plant you don’t wait until spring or summer when they are coming into ˛ ower to buy, chances are you could miss out. Some favourites we have ready for planting now include:

PRUNE: Roses love to have a good prune in winter, they bounce back very quickly and it’s easier to see what you’re doing while the branches are bare.

Plant & Transplant Plants cope better going from bag to ground, or being moved from one place in the ground to another, while they are resting during the winter months. Dig a hole that is

roots won’t be bent or damaged. Fill the planting hole with a mixture of ican Premium Compost & ican Premium Planting Mix and add in a handful of ican Slow Food.

Place the plant so that the crown is level 2 with the ground (this will usually be how it was sitting in the pot) and then ÿ ll any gaps with soil and ÿ rm down gently. Water well with the remains of the liquid Seamite.

Winter Pruning Roses respond well to a hard prune during July/August. Some people ÿ nd the thought quite daunting but there’s no need to worry, you will be pleasantly surprised how fast they bounce back and how healthy they look.

SOME QUICK TIPS:  Always use clean, sharp quality tools  Protect yourself with a good pair of rose gloves  Take your time and stand back to assess your progress regularly  Cut approx. 1cm above an outward facing bud (outward faces towards the garden/ inwards buds grow towards the middle of the bush creating problems  Always do a clean cut with an angle of approx. 45 deg to ensure water runs away from the cut  Remove any weak, small (anything thinner than a pencil), dead, diseased or damaged wood  Remove any canes that are crossing or rubbing against each other  Prune remaining canes starting from the inside out to maximise light and air circulation in the middle of the bush  Control height by cutting remaining branches by a third to a half  Carefully get rid of all debri, don’t put it in the compost as there is a risk of infection  Spray all pruned plants with a combination of Grosafe FreeFlo Copper and Grosafe Enspray 99 (assuming plants haven’t been sprayed with anything recently). Focus on the pruning cuts, crevices and the soil surrounding the plants

If you haven’t sprayed your roses with anything to prevent pests & diseases yet there is still time to make a di˜ erence.

Some things to remember before spraying plants:  Before you start remove fallen leaves around your rose bushes and dispose of these carefully (they could have pests & diseases overwintering in them so don’t put them in the compost).  Make sure you read & follow the product instructions very carefully and protect yourself with gloves & goggles.  Spray the entire plant making sure you get into all the cracks & crevices, spraying the ground underneath is a good idea also.

There are numerous rose sprays available but our most popular for winter cleanup is Grosafe Enspray 99 & FreeFlo Copper.

Unlike most others these two can be combined and sprayed together.

Whatever spray you decide to use TAKE CARE - speciÿ c timings and instructions will depend on the individual product, so take extreme care with this.

Chair makes herstory Wairarapa Building Society [WBS] has elected its first female chairperson in its 149-year history: long-time Carterton local and seasoned lawyer Kristy McDonald.

McDonald, who took over the reins from retiring chairperson Colin Oldfield, has served on the WBS board for the past 10 years, including as deputy chairperson.

An experienced barrister and Queen’s Council, McDonald brings to the role a wealth of legal, governance and regulatory experience — as well as a strong interest in primary industries.

She holds other notable governance positions, including chair of Kiwifruit New Zealand and the Racing Integrity Board.

McDonald has a longrunning connection with the Wairarapa community, having lived in Gladstone for close to 30 years.

Back in the 1880s, her husband’s great grandfather was the region’s first chemist, and her mother worked closely with the Home of Compassion in Carterton

The change in leadership comes on the back of a period of transformation for the community banking organisation: with its move to new premises in June, and the appointment of Jennie Mitchell as its first female chief executive earlier in the year.

McDonald acknowledged Oldfield’s contribution to the board, and his insight and commitment to advancing WBS. “We have achieved a lot under Colin’s watch,”

she said.

“We’ve refreshed our brand, updated our website, transformed our core banking system, and more recently moved into our new purpose-built office.”

Ongoing investment in its IT systems has ensured WBS can continue to keep pace with demand for local loans and secure investments.

However, McDonald said it is the business’ focus on service and community that is its real point of difference.

“One of our key objectives is to deliver personal service, and work with and give back to the community,” she said.

“Building relationships and personal service is at the heart of what we do.”

Oldfield acknowledged the dedicated board members he has worked with over his 10-year tenure.

“I am proud of all we have achieved together, and I am confident I am leaving the board in good hands.”

WBS director Tony Beech has stepped into McDonald’s former role as deputy chair.

Veteran swimming coach Russell Geange rates newly crowned three-time national champion Ava Wilson right up there with the best he has coached.

Representing the Carterton Swimming Club, Wilson returned with an impressive haul of three gold medals, two silver, and one bronze from the National Secondary Schools’ Championships, held in Hamilton last month.

“I compare swimmers with swimmers and those I’ve had,” Geange said.

“She’s only 13 – and I rate her up there with the likes of Jodie Workman and Katrina Simmonds, and I rate her with the top girls I’ve coached.”

breaststroke, silver in the 100m and 200m freestyle, and bronze in the 100m individual medley.

Her winning time of four minutes and 29.65 seconds in the freestyle, 8.3 seconds ahead of the runner-up, particularly impressed Geange.

“She also did 59 seconds for the 100m freestyle, and we don’t get many girls go under one minute in Wairarapa, so she’s heading in the right direction.”

Another of Geange’s charges, Rathkeale student James Church also had an impressive meet, swimming into a bronze medal and making nine finals in the boys’ 15 years age group.

Church’s bronze came in the 100m freestyle, finishing in 53.48 seconds, just 0.23 seconds off second place.

Pariwhariki is a name of the second range of hills east of the paemaunga (mountain range), Maungarake. As a compound word Pari means a cliff and whariki a woven mat. In a grammar structure, the first word is the subject and in this case a noun. The second word is a descriptor and in this case an adjective.

So Pariwhariki means a woven-like cliff. When someone or something is covered by a woven mat it depicts that the person (but in this case the cliff face) is a protection most likely for the people who lived at the closest marae, which was a marae called Hinewaka. Ko Pariwhariki, te paemaunga kaitiaki - Pariwhariki is the guardian mountain range.

The Bishop’s next big move

Although, someone up in Heavenly HR needs to remind “Bishop” Brian his taxes are due. And that it’s “easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a wealthy man to enter the kingdom of God”.

It’s right there in the Good Book — the one “the Apostle” claims to follow.

Oh, wait. The only good book is Brian’s chequebook.

Silly me.

For those of you who have missed the news from Camp Destiny, “da Bish” is making another grab for The Beehive.

Last week’s Freedom and Rights Coalition protest at the Auckland Domain doubled as a recruitment drive for Tamaki’s new political outfit — an “umbrella movement” made up of four existing

parties — which plans to contest the 2023 General Election.

Tamaki refused to confirm the identity of the parties in question. He was a little prickly with reporters — he has called the media “modern-day terrorists” after all.

The man himself won’t be standing. “[Parliament is] the last place I want to go. I’d have to turn into a deceiver, a liar and a crook.”

You gotta laugh.

Slightly less amusing, however, is what Tamaki and his band of merry men plan to do next.

The next phase for the new party is the “Let’s Get NZ Back Again!” campaign, culminating with a “roadtrip” to Parliament.

There, the group intends to lead a “mass parliament clean out”. Demonstrators

will present a “petition for a vote of no confidence”, urging the Opposition to call a snap election. They will also stage a “People’s Court for crimes against Kiwis”.

Does this sound … scarily familiar? The slogan? The references to “cleaning out” and “trials”? The attempt to force hands to swing an election in their favour?

The delegitimising of the media and the questionable hairdos?

Anyone else a little nervous?

Trumpian comparisons aside, media analysis doesn’t fancy Tamaki making any real dent in the election outcome. As Alison Mau mentioned in a Stuff editorial, Tamaki’s previous bids for Parliament — with the Destiny and Vision Parties — brought in 0.1%

of the vote. His “lack of focus”, the decline of New Zealand’s religious population, and the number of Aucklanders annoyed by his gridlocking of the Harbour Bridge don’t exactly bode well for the Bishop.

1News’ Simon Mercep agreed. Tamaki needs numbers — and numbers at the Domain protest were thin on the ground.

Auckland University’s Disinformation Project isn’t so sure.

As academic Sanjana Hattotuwa told The Spinoff, Tamaki has become “increasingly and troublingly more populist”.

Like Donald Trump and other populist leaders before him, Tamaki is appealing to “the ordinary people”. The disaffected “silent majority”,

debilitated by inflation, the housing crisis, and vaccine mandates, whose concerns the establishment has ignored.

Classic demagogue tactics: reach out to people who have been kicked to the curb by current systems. Tap into their mistrust of the media. Rile them up at rallies. Unite them against a common enemy. It’s worked before.

Hattouwa didn’t mince words: “To dismiss these political machinations as unlikely to manifest in serious electoral success is as simplistic as it is naïve.”

I don’t personally rate Tamaki’s chances of holding office. That said, I agree we’d be unwise to count him out. In 2016, Americans wrote Trump off as a buffoon and a circus attraction. That didn’t work out so well.

Don’t get complacent, folks. If you don’t want Tamaki — the same dude who charges $3000 for a sermon and blamed earthquakes on the LGBTQ+ community — anywhere near our seat of democracy, then show up and vote — for anyone else.

Hold on to your hair gel, Wairarapa. We’re in for a bumpy ride.

A full term of art at Aratoi As these rainy grey days continue, our Education Team gear up for another bright and colourful term of lively student tours and students’ art.

With two fantastic photo art exhibitions showing at Aratoi, we have chosen to focus our education programme this term on the art of photography.

We have been working with REAP and artist Lucy Cooper to develop some great hands-on workshops for students.

From August 29 to September 16, young students will have the chance to expand their thinking beyond traditional forms of taking a photo.

As part of our photography workshops, students will develop new skills in composing their shot, and telling a story with still life objects. Previsit and post-visit videos, will help teachers to further develop their student’s photography skills back in class.

What a great way to get students snapping shots for the upcoming annual Wairarapa Schools Photography Competition.

The first school groups tours have also begun for A Cabinet of Curiosities, our exhibition of the old Masterton Museum collection.

and this exhibit is like a peep hole into the lives of the early Masterton settlers.

Full of quirky and surprising objects, this tour stimulates great discussion.

It also has the potential to challenge older students, to

reflect on; and question the actions and values of past generations.

For small tour groups, of 10 or less people, we even offer the chance to be welcomed behind the scenes to view our main collection store.

Towards the end of the school term, we will begin to prepare for the annual Breadcraft Wairarapa Schools Art show.

This unique and exciting exhibition is a longstanding favourite with our visitors and our staff. The Breadcraft Schools Art Show gives us a chance to enjoy the fresh vision and no-holes-barred approach of children and young people from schools throughout Wairarapa.

The exhibition has been run in the region since the 1980s, and is made possible by the support of Breadcraft. Opening on the first weekend of October, be prepared for multiple colour explosions, unlimited imaginations and creativity that’s outside the lines, when you visit.

Institute brings Navalny to Masterton The Institute of International Affairs’ next meeting will be the fundraising showing of Navalny on August 18, the second night of the International Film Festival in Masterton.

This dramatic documentary - particularly timely given Russia’s ruthless assault on Ukraine - is the story of Alexei Navalny, Putin’s principal political critic who survived an assassination attempt by poisoning with a lethal nerve agent in August 2020.

During his monthslong recovery he made shocking discoveries about the attempt on his life and, despite this, returned home to Russia where he was jailed in January 2021.

In June this year he was transferred from a penal colony to a maximumsecurity prison notorious for its brutality.

He pauses for a moment before remarking wryly: “I was very wrong.”

Aviation history recalled Wairarapa has a long history of aviation and innovation that also includes early ÿ lmmaking.

To ÿ nd out more about our accomplishments in this area. Film Festival director JANE ROSS interviewed Gareth Winter about some of our innovators and inventors.

Jane Ross: I’d love to know more about the Fisher Monoplane — a remarkable invention that took flight in our Wairarapa skies in June 1913. I understand the Fisher Monoplane was designed and built by Wellington-based engineer Percy Fisher. It holds an important place in New Zealand’s aviation history as it was the first aircraft built in this country that went on to achieve controlled and sustained flight.

Gareth Winter: There were two sets of flights - the one captured on film took place at Hurunui-o-rangi, which is near Gladstone, and opposite the Hurunuio-rangi marae. Fisher was a Wellington-born engineer. He worked for the railways, originally as a fitter and turner, but was quite keen on invention.

He was involved in a few patents. He became very interested in aviation, probably and especially after Bleriot’s transChannel flight in 1909. I think that it is accepted the plans for the Fisher monoplane were adapted from the plans he saw for Bleriot’s machine, in a magazine called Flight.

JR: What is a monoplane, Gareth?

GW: A monoplane just means it’s got one set of wings. Lots of early aeroplanes had more than one, often up to three or four sets of front wings.

Though sometimes those front wings were at the back, confusingly, but Fisher followed up with Bleriot’s plans and he used just a single set of wings.

JR: You have been involved in the research around the publication of the book, Taking Flight, published by the Wairarapa Archive. It covers the two flights you speak about - one at Pigeon Bush and the other at Hurunui-o-rangi.

I understand there was a descendant of the aviator who was interested in telling this story.

GW: Indeed, there was a great-grandson, Paul Maxim, who popped into the archive one day and wanted to check up some facts and things. I asked, “What are you doing?” He told me he was writing a book. I asked him if he had found a publisher and suggested to him he may have found one, if he hadn’t already. It’s been a popular book. There’s a niche for aviation history so it’s done very well.

JR: How can people access this book?

GW: There’s certainly

JR: An article about this event was published in the Wairarapa-Age on June 24, 1913. It highlighted the amazing accomplishment of both the flight and the film work. Let’s delve deeper into the key people involved with these events.

Who was the aviator? Who was the cinematographer?

GW: The aviator was a man named Reggie White. He first tried to fly the plane at Pigeon Bush, which is hard up against the Remutaka Range near Featherston. That’s going to perhaps cause some wind problems. Perhaps not the best place to try and fly a plane, or for that matter, learn to try and fly a plane. No one can teach you if no one has done it before. It’s a slightly adventurous thing to be doing. In the end they decided to use Len Pyke’s paddock out at Hurunuio-rangi.

The cinematographer was a man named Charlie Barton. There are references to him being involved in

cinematography in Wellington at around 1909. From the 1920s he became the official cinematographer for the government.

JR: So, we could view him as one of our early pioneering cinematographers in New Zealand. On the day of the sustained flight Barton managed to capture about three minutes of footage, which is amazing considering he was using a hand-cranked camera.

There would have been a few attempts at achieving sustained flight, so you’d have to be committed to the job. It was the first flight in the Gladstone district.

GW: He would have needed to be standing in the right place at the right time, as well. The take-offs didn’t last very long. You’ve have to be in the right place to see it flying. Controlled flight in today’s terms is probably an exaggeration. The plane went up, stayed in the air and came down again without crashing.

So in that sense it was controlled.

JR: The footage does give you a sense of momentum and you do get to see the plane taxi and take off from different angles. I would like to direct people to the NZONSCREEN database or YouTube to view the footage. It’s such a wonderful record of our early aviation and film history.

GW: What’s marvellous to me about it is the coming together of two new technologies … both in their infancy. The threeminute film was shown in Masterton in the old TP Building. So in 1913 people in Masterton could go and see Wairarapa scenes on screen.

The majority of our nation is so far disconnected from God—the One who holds the future. Are you connected to God? If you are, you don’t need to be afraid or worried.

For He will be there for you and He will help you through the greatest storms in life. You have a bright future awaiting you! It doesn’t mean you will escape trouble for we will all face it someday. But how do you face it? Alone or with God? That makes a huge difference in our life and the way we live.

Where is your security when you face the future? Men will fail you and so will your money, possession and earthly goods. Why not come to Jesus? Are you too proud or do you feel too good to come? What a terrible thing it would be to face God without Jesus. For we all, whether you believe it or not, will have to face Him. No one can escape Him. But those who have trusted Jesus will enter Heaven into the presence of God where there will be no more pain, sorrow and crying. No more evil and sin. What a day to look forward to! That’s the future –safe and secure—for all those who trust in Jesus. Is this your future?

The EcoReef test installation at Whatarangi has withstood another large storm. On July 21, large swells battered Wairarapa’s southern coast, taking chunks out of Cape Palliser Rd. Mary Argue The fight for our whio is being fought on multiple fronts, with New Zealand’s native blue duck population under threat from climate change and dwindling numbers.

The latest census figures from the Department of Conservation [DOC] indicated wild whio pairs had dropped by almost 170 from 2021 figures.

The count this year recorded 694 pairs in monitored areas where trapping was carried out, compared with the 862 pairs recorded in the same areas the previous census year.

Pukaha Wildlife Centre in Mt Bruce had also suffered a loss, with the death of one-half of the successful and only breeding pair in captivity in the North Island.

DOC whio recovery group leader Andy Glaser said the declining numbers could, in part, be attributed to survey methodology - 2021 was a full census year.

He said counts on non-census years were less exhaustive, and not all rivers were covered, however, he said the impact of climate change could not be ignored.

“We’re getting more severe weather events.”

Latest census results indicate wild whio population is su˜ ering from climate change-related weather events.

He said increased water runoff reduced water quality in whio habitats and torrential rainstorms meant cold and wet conditions for young ducklings.

“Duckling survival rates have halved over the past two years.

“Storms can also split whio families and reduce their ability to feed at a crucial time in their growth.

“The combined effect can be catastrophic.”

Pukaha biodiversity manager Christine Reed said once ducklings were lost, whio pairs tended not to re-nest that season.

“Water quality and feeding can be impacted by ongoing floods, so it certainly makes it more challenging overall to be successful.

“There is the potential for decreased productivity.”

Reed said flooding at the centre did not overly impact Pukaha’s whio.

“Pukaha is called the west coast of the North Island. It generally rains here a lot. We get flooding events that might breach the stream, but not where the whio are.”

She said the more pressing issue facing whio at the centre was the death of Jimmy, a 12-year-old male.

Reed understood Pukaha had the only breeding pair in captivity, producing juveniles for release in the North Island.

“Jimmy and Jazzy were a fantastic pair and have produced really well. This year we have sent up two or three clutches [to the

Central Plateau].”

She said Jimmy was found dead in his aviary on Monday and, although still awaiting the final post-mortem results, did not expect to find anything significant.

Reed said the breeding programme at the centre had been under way since the 1980s and was an integral leader in developing the techniques for successful captive breeding.

Pukaha is one of a handful of centres in New Zealand with a whiorearing programme that releases whio into the wild.

“The captive release programme has resulted in a significant increase to pairs in the wild,” Reed said.

“Tongariro River is now pretty packed.”

She said there could be many reasons for the drop in census numbers over the past year.

“There are so many factors involved when you look at census results. Is there an error of observation that is creeping in? How effective is predator management?

Has anything else changed?”

She said when predator management ceased, population decline could be swift, however said the reduced duckling numbers likely pointed to the impact of floods.

“But you won’t really know until you look back at trends over time.”

Reed said captive numbers had been dwindling for some time, and there was a push to replenish stock from populations in the Tararuas.

In the meantime, she said Jazzy would be introduced to another male whio at Pukaha.

“Ideally, you would put a number of birds in an aviary together to choose their own mates.

“But when you’re in a situation when you have so few, you just try with what you have and see what happens.”

Best to check country’s ways When travelling the world, it is always a good idea to check what customs are important in the counties you are visiting. Especially ones that might upset the host.

Not everyone likes to be hugged or kissed on the cheek, in fact in some cultures these are considered offensive.

Luckily in this country that is not the case.

The way different cultures approach hospitality is very interesting. What might be okay in one country, might be a big no-no in another.

Again, we don’t really have any strange customs when it comes to entertaining or providing hospitality. I do recall however, about 40 years ago, I met a man who had come from Britain and had settled in Wellington.

We lived in the same apartment block and both worked for the same company. When he arrived in Wellington, he sought out ways to get involved in the community and saw an advert for the Island Bay Tennis Club. Their season was about to start and they were keen to welcome new members.

He was most perplexed to see in the notice, a request.

Please bring a plate. The thought of the club being so poor they didn’t even

Graeme Burnard have anything to eat off, really upset him. On opening day, not only did he turn up with a plate, he had been out and bought a whole dinner set and a box of cutlery. This all looked very snazzy among the scones, sausage rolls and club sandwiches on the table and he was an instant hit with the club.

Pot-luck dinners are a great tradition here and I will never forget a New Year’s Eve party in Hunterville many years ago with the most magnificent spread

provided by the locals.

When I was about two years old, my father was driving home from Otaki to our farm at Te Horo when he came across a young man hitchhiking on the side of the road.

He was holding a sign which said Wellington.

This was the mid-1950s not a lot of traffic and it was getting late afternoon, so dad offered to take this young man home, feed him, give him a bed for the night and then put him back on SH1 the next morning. Fred Williams he

was called, and he was so overwhelmed by this offer of hospitality [very typical of my parents], he ended staying for three years and dad built him a cottage to live in.

He became life-long friends with the family and when I went to live in Britain in the 1970s, he and his wife were like parents to me. He never forgot the kindness that was shown to him by my parents and others in the community. Something that is special to this country.

Now I don’t know if any other countries invite you to bring a plate but there are interesting customs around the world.

In China, Japan and South Korea, slurping your food is a sign of appreciation. That wouldn’t do me I’m afraid.

In Germany it is very impolite to arrive late but in India and some Latin American countries, it is more polite to arrive 15-20 minutes late, so your host doesn’t feel pressured.

In some Latin American countries, it is considered extremely bad luck to hand someone the salt. If somebody asks for the salt it should be placed on the table in front of them. It is also bad luck to make a toast with water.

In Georgia [Europe, not USA], wine is only drunk as a toast after the meal.

You don’t sip it throughout and in Russia, guests are welcomed with a shot of vodka, but beware of the game “Man Down” drinking shots of vodka until the last person is still standing. Unfortunately, it is a huge insult to refuse to play.

I have been lucky enough to see a lot of the world and on every return from overseas I am always happy and relieved to be home. Good old kiwi hospitality will do me any time.

Wairarapa Shafts and Wheels

Every week on average, four people suffer a cardiac arrest somewhere in Greater Wellington and Wairarapa and when a bystander steps in to perform CPR, the chances of survival can double.

Knowing how to do CPR could save the life of a family member, friend or colleague so it’s best to be prepared. So Ka Pai Carterton is planning a series of funded First Aid, First Aid refreshers and Heartbeat courses in Carterton in Sept / Oct (dates TBC) for community groups and volunteers. Tim Nelson Someone close to me has decided to do her first halfmarathon. Despite being a regular gym-goer, she hasn’t done much running, and the event she’ll be doing is only six weeks away. As I’ll be doing it with her I asked if she’d rather do the shorter 10km event. Her reply to this was ‘no’, she has set the goal of a half-marathon, and this is what she will work hard to train for and do.

Goals that stretch us are important. Author Richard Wiseman said we should set them at a level that really push us, with a 5050 chance of managing to achieve them. For an event like a half-marathon this places an importance on the need to train properly and, once achieved, will lead to a sense of significant satisfaction

at having worked to do something so challenging.

Yes, the 10km would have been enjoyable and is a challenge, but for the person I’m writing about, she probably could have done it without too much effort, whereas the halfmarathon is something else entirely.

More on more with less

I have written about doing more with less, or making the most of what we have, especially in times in which people are under considerable pressure.

There are also times in which limitation can lead to more creativity.

An example of this is the Dr Seuss book Sam I Am. Seuss was given the challenge of writing a book with 50 words [or less], and Sam I Am was

the result. This is a book that has been read and enjoyed by millions for decades. Would it have been as successful with more words, who knows?

But what we do know is how popular the book has been and continues to be to this day.

Limited resources will mean that we are forced to be creative, to think about the best way to use

what we have. Applying the same philosophy, even when it’s not imposed on us, will lead to far better use of what we do have.

Sharing experiences

I’m reading The Circle, written by David Eggers.

The book is a work of fiction about a large social media company that begins to take over people’s lives. It was

written in 2013 but seems in many ways as if it was written yesterday and is describing the world as it is now.

Despite the frightening message the book shares, there is one aspect that does strike as being potentially positive and beneficial. While we do often hear that social media feeds are simply the highlights of people’s lives,

just the very best bits with the day-to-day normal things we do edited out [I agree with this absolutely], it can still be beneficial and inspiring to viewers to see these highlights.

For example, a friend of mine is in another country and is sharing posts of her and her family. I love seeing these, they remind me of my own time in the same places, the memories

The Birmingham Commonwealth Games have started. There’s something about these games that I particularly like, this being that the games aren’t just taking place in Birmingham, instead they are taking place wherever venues already exist.

For example, the track cycling took place in London in the velodrome built for the 2012 Olympic Games. What a great idea.

Birmingham and London are only 200km apart and connected by road and rail. Yes, in an ideal world there would be a facility in Birmingham, but the cost of creating one for an event that will be over in a week can’t be justified.

I love the Birmingham approach to hosting the Games. What they have done has opened the event to other countries, who can now start looking at using existing facilities to become future hosts, as opposed to putting huge financial strain on a city for just one-two weeks in

the limelight.

Birmingham is also a great example to any organisation looking at facilities, from a school to a city council. We should always look at what’s already available and make the most of what we have. Of course, this might not provide us with the ultimate facility, but it will be good enough and, more importantly, financially manageable.

What can be done with less?

In Richard Wiseman’s fabulous book Shoot for the Moon, which looks at the inspiration behind the race to the moon, he shares an idea that is incredibly relevant in the current climate, this being ‘what can be done with less?’

We are in a time in which many are under so much pressure to just meet daily needs. When writing something like this I never want to seem trite, as I am very fortunate in so many ways. However, as one of 13 children I grew up in what could only be described as poverty. My mother was a stay-home mum, and my father was a builder’s labourer, then a government clerk. What I saw in them was how they managed to provide for us all with so little financial resources.

In Wiseman’s book he writes about what we could do if a budget was cut significantly? Could

the same goal be achieved by being innovative and looking at creative ways of doing things? Would greater care be made with the limited resources we now have?

Things being tighter definitely puts people under pressure. One way to respond is by examining what we have done in the past and make changes. Perhaps things will improve, and if we could maintain the habits implemented during the tougher times this will make us even more resilient for whatever the future may hold.

Well-being enhanced

On the Rich Roll podcast a listener asked a question about getting ahead in life.

I really liked Roll’s answer, which is counter to a lot of the messages we are given these days. Roll related the idea of working hard to increasing a sense of personal well-being. He said there are many who choose to put in no effort into anything they do to avoid burnout. Roll’s view is that this is really just lazy; there really are things we need to work hard at and in doing so we’ll create within ourselves a sense of personal pride and fulfilment.

From a personal perspective, the things that have given me the greatest satisfaction in life have all come from working hard; my family, career, health, friendships. These

things aren’t always easy to achieve, but they’re far more likely to happen when we put in the effort.

Another perspective

I just watched a fascinating Yes Theory YouTube video in which the host spent seven days travelling through Syria. The picture we tend to have of this country is that it would be incredibly unsafe for a western tourist to visit there. However, among many sad stories about the war that took place there for so long, the overwhelming message shared was one of hope and pride.

Syria has been through an awful time since the war began 10 years ago.

Now, though, the country seems settled as they begin rebuilding. The video didn’t talk about politics, but it did share many examples of people who were such great ambassadors for what the country could become again. This really is a case of the need for us all to get another perspective besides the one we get from the 6pm news.

Eight chickenpox vaccines stored incorrectly Eight chicken pox vaccines were stored incorrectly at Carterton Medical Centre before being administered in May and June.

A quality check in May found inconsistencies in the temperature of the fridge where the Varivax vaccines were stored.

There were eight children aged 15 to 16 months vaccinated with this vaccine.

Te Ora Compass Health was in the process of contacting the families affected and would offer a re-vaccination at no cost.

However, this would be optional.

Te Whatu Ora [Health NZ] was notified in late July after a series of expert clinical advice was available.

Thorpe said the matter was taken seriously and apologised to the whanau involved.

“The vaccination that was given is safe, but a repeat vaccination is recommended to provide the very best protection on this occasion.

“We are sorry for any distress this may cause to the affected whanau.”

Trout centre spawns a new age of fishing Julia Vahry caught her first trout when she was five and now she’s persuading a new generation to have a go.

Her daughter, nineyear-old Isla Petersen, is already learning to cast, strike and land her own fish.

Vahry aims to get children who’ve been cooped up indoors during the pandemic out enjoying nature and learning a skill which could become a lifetime hobby.

Fly fishing also brings families together, she says.

“Two years of being locked inside, people are frightened even, reemerging back out into society again.

“People are having a hard time either with mental health, anxiety, scared of what might happen.”

Vahry is the newly installed kids fishing ambassador at the Tongariro National Trout Centre in Turangi, where children can have a go at the sport as well as learn about the ecosystem and freshwater protection.

Country Life watched as

Isla, dressed in waders and under the expert tuition of volunteer Doug Stevens, cast out her line into the children’s fishing pond teeming with trout.

Vahry says the controlled environment of the pond is safer for children learning, but Isla is beginning to get out and about now to fly fishing spots on easily accessible rivers.

“People don’t realise what’s in their backyard and so easily accessible,” she says.

“A lot of these rivers we drive over every single day have fish in them and people would have no idea if they stopped, pulled over and went bush whacking or explored, that they might find a beautiful, tranquil spot and have a great incredible moment and memory together as a family.”

Vahry, who spent 10 years in the police force, decided to take up the ambassadorial role after realising the benefits she had gained fishing with her father and grandfather.

“I saw it as a wonderful opportunity to give back to

This spring has been nothing if not inconsistent and challenging.

For many, heifer calves to be retained as replacements are now going into the rearing facilities. It’s timely to remind ourselves what’s important if we want these calves to get off to the best possible start. Calves must receive 2 – 3 litres of colostrum within 6 hours of birth. This has to be seen as a given. Once they’ve had this colostrum there is little to be gained from leaving the calf with the cow beyond 24 hours. Warm, dry, draught-free shelter is the next key, with fresh water and good quality hay made available within the first few days after birth. Feeding twice daily initially is important for the first few weeks, then they can be moved on to once daily feeds with a specialty calf meal available.

It can be tempting to cut this cost, but it is important to balance this decision with the fact that these heifers are the future of your herd and cutting corners now could mean lower weaning and mating weights later on. The key is to make sure the crude protein of the supplement is around 20%. A combination of milk and meal is the best option as calves fed on larger quantities of milk will have slower rumen development. Wairarapa-Bush 10 Wellington Centurions 76 The Wellington Centurions were too big, too skilful, and too fast for Farriers Wairarapa-Bush in a Heartland warm-up match at Trust House Memorial Park on Saturday.

Centurions, who are Wellington B in disguise, dominated possession and territory and ran in 12 tries, with six of those coming in the final 17 minutes when the home side ran out of puff.

The visitors opened the scoring after four minutes and had a 31-0 lead before Wai-Bush finally got on the scoreboard with a try to winger Tristan Flutey.

Replacement fullback Aseri Waqa added the second try 14 minutes into the second half to make the score 36-10, in what Wai-Bush coach Mark Rutene felt was his team’s best period in the game.

“We showed, in a 20-30-minute patch either side of halftime, that there’s something there but just trying to put it together for 80 minutes is our challenge, and trying to get fit,” Rutene said.
