Based in Masterton, Seeds & Cereals are producers and suppliers of seed, animal feed and associated goods for farms, lifestyle blocks, pet owners and home gardeners.

The poultry and pigeons at the Show belong to the

30 members of the Wairarapa Pigeon and Poultry Club who will be showing a variety of small and large chooks, ducks and pigeons with some for sale to the public.

Interest in keeping poultry in the Wairarapa is growing hugely, says long time member Melvin Pike. THE CLUB plays an important role in maintaining the purity of some of the oldest breeds in New Zealand such as Orpington, Plymouth Rock and Leghorn.

But they also raise and sell cross breeds for people who want a colourful cross bred and good egg layers.

It’s show time again and we’ve been working hard to continue to make the Masterton A&P Show a venue of choice and a crowd-pleaser for all ages and demographics when there are plenty of competing events in our community. As plans got under way for our 132ND annual show, we reviewed what had worked well in the past and what could be done better.

More FREE entertainment for the Kids!

We listened to your feedback about the range of children’s entertainment at our 2018 show and decided this was one area we wanted to improve on. Families remain a key focus at our show with many of us having wonderful memories of going to the show with our families for this big day out! We’ve boosted our range of children’s entertainment options which have taken on a life of their own – there’s something for all age groups and, with only one exception, all entertainment options are FREE. Return Buses from Solway Station to Showgrounds – see Tranzit website We have also responded to last year’s increase in the number of visitors travelling to our show from Wellington and the Kapiti coast. This year Tranzit NZ will make buses available to meet the train at 11.28 am at Solway Station and then do it all again to return them to Solway Station to meet the train returning to Wellington at 4.52 pm.

Grandstand Oval Entertainment A flurry of activity in the main oval will keep visitors amused and entertained, including, a Rural Fire Brigade Challenge, Teen Ag

schools team competitions and Strongman/CrossFit competitions plus our annual $1000 Tug O’ War Challenge and Horse versus Man/ Woman Clydesdale pull.

Home Industries Competition and Displays A visit to the refurbished area under the Grandstand is a must.

There is fierce competition for prizes in the cookery, preserves, arts and crafts, spinning, knitting, sewing, floral, and fruit and vegies plus other sponsored home industries sections.

Equestrian and Livestock The equestrian section takes up a large part of our beautiful showgrounds with competition taking place over three days with show jumping, show hunter and heavy horses all competing on Saturday.

The livestock section includes strong entries in sheep, pigs, beef cattle and dogs.

Judging begins at 9.00 am and the everpopular petting zoo will also keep the kids entertained.

Enjoy a relaxing and affordable fun day out at our beautiful and historic Solway Showgrounds and enjoy plenty of big shady trees, entertainment, music and a menagerie of animals on show.

 The Petting Zoo is open and the animals are waiting to be admired. Everyone loved our Valais Blacknose sheep - they’re a very friendly bunch who enjoy the attention.  There’s hens and pigs and sheep as well plus a couple of Alpacas to swoon over.  Our face painters will be busy right beside the Petting Zoo so get in early for ‘your’ facial!

 The Kahutara Municipal Brass Band strikes up from their lofty position in the grandstand.  Our FREE children’s entertainment gets underway over behind the grandstand. Enjoy the

water balls and the slippery slide, bumper cars and the bungy tramp designed for four.  We’ve also got a magician and mirror man and our fun circus zone – something for everyone.  See our artisan group next to the kiosk near the children’s zone – our wood turners can make a spinning jenny or a toggle while you wait and that’s free too!  Pop into the Home Industries display under the grandstand – an amazing

display and seeing is really believing.  Enjoy the Highland Pipe Band, everyone’s favourites – they’ll kick off the highland dancing action as competitors prepare for their events – from six-year olds up to experienced competitors

TUG O’ war the decisive contest The infamous ‘Tug o’ War’ will take place at 1pm. The mission? Take down two-time winners in a row, Carterton Rugby Club.

The Oxford Dictionary provided the quote for the title of this article, along with other phrases such as “the real struggle or tussle” and “a severe contest for supremacy”. And if that’s the case, it seems the Carterton region’s rugby players have decisively won the tussle for two years in a row. But can they make it a third?

It’s certainly worth a good strong pull on the rope to make sure they don’t make it three times lucky with a $600 cash prize on the line for the winner of the open category.

ANIMAL’S AND big is beautiful Who doesn’t love the big and beautiful, yet somehow soft and kind, Clydesdale horses?

Sixteen Clydesdales came to show in the Heavy Horse section of last year’s Masterton A&P Show and at least that number is expected again. Kim Kenning, a local Clydesdale owner and breeder, says there are around 30 Clydesdales in the Wairarapa region and 5000 registered across the country. The heritage breed is known for its size, strength and ‘feather’ on their lower leg. “We are doing as much as we can to promote the rare heritage breed,” she says.

It’s a serious business in the Heavy Horse section with a senior judge, a junior judge, and a steward to help the event run smoothly. “This year the team in charge of the Heavy Horse section are all women, which is pretty neat,” says Kim. “The event is organised into classes and horses are judged on various activities such as pulling a sled, cart or moving wagon around an obstacle course.”

an impressive 780kg. A normal horse weighs in the vicinity of 400-500kg, so it’s no wonder the Clydesdale breed looks so comfortable pulling carts full of people.

The horses are also assessed for what is known as the ‘bone and feather’ – the size and ‘feather’ of their hocks and the straightness of their bones. Their entire body is checked over.

Speaking of which, the public will have the opportunity to take cart rides throughout the show and one of the team will be available at lunchtime to allow people to pat the horses and answer any questions they may have.

For anyone worried about putting on a few Christmas pounds, this will make you feel better. Kim’s lightest Clydesdale, a two-year-old foal, weighs 520kg! And their largest Clydesdale clocks in at

When Clydesdales aren’t at a show or simply looking beautiful in a paddock, they can be found doing traditional farm work, such as pulling a plough or a set of harrows (chains) to spread manure.

Kim says Clydesdales are “gorgeous” and make wonderful pets. In fact, that’s what Kim had in mind 12 years ago when she was looking for a “nice and safe horse”.

Although she admits it definitely hurts when they stand on your feet.

livestock serious cute factor alert – valais blacknose sheep ahead These have to be the seriously cutest sheep. Ever. And they will be showcased once again at this year’s show!

These beauties are called Valais Blacknose sheep and were originally imported to New Zealand by a partnership formed between biosecurity expert Christine Reed, and husband and wife Sally and Lindsay Strathdee.

The breed is described as “the cutest sheep in the world”. Given they have nearly 14,000 Facebook followers, they probably have every right to that claim.

The fairly long and arduous journey. to establish a local flock began as a pipe dream after a cute photo on the internet “took the eye” of Sally Strathdee. But she needed the expertise and experience of biosecurity expert Christine to help them select the very best specimens to start their Valais family.

Their first successful lambs were 9 girls and 7 boys. A very “unusual, but welcome” surprise included a set of twins. Christine and Sally enjoyed the lambs’ “friendly inquisitive nature” describing them as unlike any other sheep, and “more like the family dog following you around the paddock”.

The lambs and their owners made headlines around New Zealand – and further afield – when the cuteness factor was picked up by media.

Sally and Christine, under their brand Valais Blacknose New Zealand, are now helping other breeders grow their own stock of cutest-ever sheep.

AGRI SKILLS competition teenagers show off their skills One of the highlights of the A&P show will undoubtedly be the ‘Teen Agri Skills’ competition organised by teenager and competitor Archie Woodhouse.

The competition is based on the highly successful ‘TeenAg’ competitions (now rebranded as Junior Young Farmer). The Masterton A&P Show hosted the East Coast regional competition last year. Archie went on to compete at a national level.

“The Teen Agri Skills competition was so popular last year, we were asked to come up with a version that would be just as much fun, just as popular, and demonstrate what our local young people are doing in the field of agriculture,” says Archie.

But the local teams will be facing off against some tough competition from Hawke’s Bay with Napier Boys High School

putting up a few of their top teams.

Rathkeale boy Archie says there is “a bit of an intense rivalry” between the two schools, but it is all in the name of advancing and improving young talent in agriculture.

In total, 18 teams of two will face off in three rounds covering a variety of skills, from building something you’d need on the farm to a half-hour written exam.

Points will be tallied and one team, and their school, will be named the winner.

It’s a busy time of year for Archie who, on top of organising the competition, is also kicking off his final year at Rathkeale College as Head Boy. Archie, who comes from a rural background, is intending to head into a career in agriculture. “It’s a viable field with a lot of innovation and fantastic opportunities,” he says.

CHILDREN’S entertainment loads more fun for the kids!

Our 2019 children’s entertainment is shaping up to be bigger and better for kids of all sizes and ages! We all know kids love to see the animals and the various competitions going on at the show, but you just can’t beat an inflatable slide, water balls or dodgem cars and the fun is only just beginning!

“We listened to our customers who told us they felt we could do more for the younger people coming to the show,” says A&P Show Secretary Annie Wright.

“So this year they will get their wish – we’ve gone all out with amusement rides, a petting zoo, face painting, mirror man and clowns and best of all, with the exception of one set of games, all our children’s entertainment is FREE!

An attendee from last year, eight-year-old Riley, said he “really enjoyed the show” and this year he’s excited to hear there will be even more to do and see. “It sounds awesome,” he says.

GAMES, FUN AND prizes dig up great prizes in the big dig Big Digs were a compulsory part of an A&P show and Masterton A&P organisers have resurrected this popular event in 2019.

There are actually three ‘Big Digs’ taking place at this year’s A&P show. One for children aged under five, another for those aged six to 11, and another for 12 to 14 year olds.

There are some big prizes up for grabs, including an Apple iPad, children’s movie passes, book vouchers, stationery vouchers, bath products, swimming pool passes, family passes to Pukaha Mount Bruce, and much, much more.

But it’s not ‘just’ about the prizes.

“Big Digs are so much for fun for everyone,” says Show Secretary Annie Wright. “Not just for the prize winners – who of course are pleased to win a prize – but for everyone involved in the digging or watching.

It’s great fun”.

The ‘Big Digs’ will be held just after lunch on Saturday 16th February under-5s at 1.30pm 6 to 11 years at 2.15pm 12-14 years at 3pm

HOME industries home sweet (and savoury) home industries Around 900 entries from the lower North Island are expected in the ‘Home Industries’ section, which is in keeping with the broader Scottish theme of this year’s A&P show. “It’s incredible,” says Home Industries President Joy Sutherland. “Everyone gets involved with the event from pre-school right through to retirement age”.

She says it’s not just the people entering the competition who show their support.

“We are incredibly lucky to have up to 90 sponsors and we really appreciate their donations. We couldn’t do without them”.

Joy says entries are coming in, but she is unsure how the heatwave will affect some of the categories. “We will have to see how the fruit, vegetables and flowers have survived in the heat,” she says.

However the Art and Craft categories have no weather-related excuse not to shine and, as always, are sure to deliver some wonderful displays of everything from cross-stitch, patchwork and knitting through to recyclable denim, jewellery and rag dolls. And much more.

The baking section is also popular with entries for traditional items such as fruit cake (popular thanks to the $100 first prize!), shortbread, and Madeira cake. I imagine there is no shortage of volunteers for judging this category!

TERRIER racing terriers battle it out Dozens of cute little terriers will race each other over three heats on the Saturday of the Show. The first heat will be held at 11.00 am, a second at 12 noon, and then the best of the best will battle it in the Grand Final at 2.00 pm.

The races are over a 100-metre course – no small feat for their little legs - in front of the grandstand. Show Secretary Annie Wright says terrier races always attract a great crowd. “They’re so much fun to watch. All cute and fluffy. Some are more serious competitors and a few are less experienced. But it’s always a great part of the show”.

There’s no need to register in advance and all types of terrier are welcome to enter on the day of the race.

Some of the better known terrier breeds include the Jack Russell, Scottish and various types of Staffordshire Terrier.

But there are actually 224 different recognised pedigree breeds of Terrier listed on the Dogs New Zealand website.

Terriers are known for their hunting abilities, and as loyal family-friendly companions.

Every year Wairere contributes to dozens of community organisations, charities, clubs and individuals.
