were two of the principle players in this dramatic change in farming practices. But the seed of this story goes back to the Shetland Islands where William Tulloch was born in 1903 on a “croft” or miniature farm. William came to New Zealand with his brother Jim in 1922 at the age of 18, to work on farms in Wairarapa, eventually starting his own agricultural contracting business in 1937 to supplement the income he was getting from milking cows on a leased farm for Masterton’s milk supply.

This was the result of joining the agricultural contracting operations of William and Graeme, with the farm machinery sales and service operation of David.

In 1963, with Graeme and his other son David, William established DW Tulloch & Company Ltd as a Wairarapa retail farm machinery dealership and agricultural contractor.

David had a passion for machines and at the age of 16 had built his ÿ rst tractor out of bits he acquired, including a 1914 Dodge engine. CONTINUES PAGE 2
